Integrated mite management provided a basic direction to early the fruit tree IPM. The early IPM concept was based on incorporation of the biological control for mite pests with the existing chemical control compatibly. Since then, the hypotheses and mechanisms of the interaction between species diversity and pest population dynamics have provided a broader understanding of mite-centered pest management in fruit tree ecosystems. Based on the principle of the ecosystem, biological control and pest management through habitat modification or manipulation are developing to the concept of agro-ecological engineering. In particular, the natural enemy diversity is dynamically changed according to the different cultivation environment in the management of mite pests, and the species composition of phytophagous mites is also changed by the environment for orchard management. This paper reviews the biological control of mites, which was the basis of apple IPM, and also re-examines the topics of species diversity and pest management, predacious mite diversity in relation to mite control and the change of species composition of mite pests in the sight of ecological engineering. Finally, we suggest a strategy for biological control of spider mites in apple orchards in Korea.

'Hongro' is one of the most important apple cultivars whose growing area is increasing because of its good quality. Recently fruit shrinking symptom causing decrease of fruit size, juice, and quality, appears in some commercial 'Hongro' orchards. The average frequency of occurrence of fruit shrinking symptom was 12 % of total trees investigated and Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV) was detected from all the trees showing fruit shrinking symptom by ELISA. A typical virus infection symptom of leaf epinasty and stem necrosis appeared on woody indicators, Spy227 and Virginia crab grafted with infected trees and all the grafted trees showed positive reaction to ACLSV antiserum by ELISA. It was proved that ACLSV can be easily transmitted by grafting. ACLSV was also isolated from the leaves of C. quinoa inoculated with sprouting leaf sap of infected trees. To prove that the fruit shrinking symptom was caused by ACLSV infection, ACLSV-infected scion was grafted on virus-free 'Hongro/M9' and the fruit characteristics were investigated. Consequently the same symptoms of fruit size and juice decreasing were observed from the trees grafted with ACLSV-infected scion. Therefore, it is suggested that the fruit shrinking symptom is caused by ACLSV infection and 'Hongro' can be classified as sensitive cultivar to ACLSV.
This study was conducted to select the cover crops in organic apple orchard by estimating the coverage of each cover crops and time-periodic weed occurrence. Seeding of Festuca myuros and Trifolium repens showed high contents of soil organic matter and phosphorus as compared with control. Seeding of Trifolium sp., Hordeum vulgare and Secale cereal reduced relatively occurrence of weed in May and S. cereal among others showed the greatest effect in June. In July, seeding F. arundinaceae and Poa pratensis showed low coverage and a lot of weeds occurred in their field. Fifty one species were occurred as weeds and it needs to removal of high and broadleaf weeds such as Chenopodium ficifolium, C. album var. centrorubru and Humulus japonicus in spring to increase the rate of ground cover. P. pratensis having the lowest cover rate showed the similar dry weight of weeds as compared with control. Trifolium sp. and Persicaria hydropiper had a high correlation with contents of soil organic matter and C. album var. centrorubru had a correlation with contents of soil phosphorus by CCA analysis.
Resistance mechanism of organophosphorus insecticides (OPs) in the spiraea aphid, whose populations were originated from several apple orchards where various OPs were frequently sprayed, was investigated. For Wonju population to which insecticides were not sprayed, resistance ratios (BRs) for pirimicarb, phosphamidon, and demeton S-methyl re 49, 31, and 5, respectively. However, for Yesan population to which OPs were sprayed 5 times, RRs for pirimicarb, phosphamidn, and dementon were 830, 536, and 204, respectively. The esterase activities of Wonju and Yesean populations increased by 44.5 and 92.0% compare to that of Kwagju population. R/S a values (S clone Kwangju population; R clone: Iechon opulation) for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition (${I}_{50}$) by pirimicarb and phosphamidon were 299.2 and 186.0, respectively. Our results indicate that increase of esterase activity and reduction of AChE sensitivity seemed to contribute insecticide resistance of the spiraea aphid.
Field surveys were conducted in 45 stone fruit orchards in seven districts of Isparta Province located in western Mediterranean region of Turkey important for stone fruit production. Leaf samples were collected from 175 trees showing virus-like symptoms. These samples were first tested by ELISA for five different RNA viruses including Apple mosaic ilarvirus (ApMV), Prunus necrotic ringspot ilarvirus (PNRSV), Prune dwarf ilarvirus (PDV), Plum pox potyvirus (PPV), Apple chlorotic leafspot trichovirus (ACLSV). While no ApMV and PPV infection was found, 46, 24 and 16 samples were tested positive for PDV, ACLSV and PNRSV, respectively, in ELISA showing about 45% of symptomatic trees in the region were infected with at least one of these viruses. In addition, it was found that nine sweet cherry trees were mixed infected with two or three of these viruses and PDV with an infection rate of 26.3% was the most widespread virus in symptomatic trees in western Mediterranean region. Thirty samples were selected and tested by a multiplex RT-PCR (mRT-PCR) for simultaneous detection of these viruses. While PPV was not detected, more than half of the tested 20 samples were individually or mixed infected with ApMV, ACLSV, PNRSV and PDV. The mRT-PCR results were confirmed by detection of these viruses individually in some of the field samples using RT-PCR with primes specific to each virus. Comparison of ELSA and mRT-PCR results of 30 samples showed that numbers of infected and mixed infected samples as well as infection and mixed infection rates were significantly higher in RT-PCR (20 and 66.7%) than in ELISA (14 and 46.7%). The results confirm that mRT-PCR is more sensitive than ELISA.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical properties of orchard soils through which their soil fertilities were discriminated. Total 877 soil samples in major orchard area, i.e. from 239 apple, 369 pear, 168 grape, 101 peach orchards, were examed on the basis of temporary optimal range for each component. The levels of fertility were ranged from 3.0 to 65.2% compared to optimum fertility, suggesting that almost orchard soils contained inadequately soil components. The contents of chemical component have a tendency to decrease with soil depth gradually from surface to subsoil. This meaned that the contents of various components in subsoil could be estimated on the basis of analysis of surface soil, using the linearly fitted equations of the relationship between component in subsoil and in surface at least to which fertility were samely managed. Furthermore, even when only the content of components in 20cm depth surface soil was analyzed, it could be determined whether the amount of each component in the surface soil is surplus or deficient.
Heavy reliance on organosynthetic chemical methods to control agricultural pest tends to deteriorate and lower fertility of soil. We studied annual occurrence of earthworm in environment-friendly agroecosystem and attempted to determine the degree of soil contamination. Candidate bioindicators of earthworm in agroecosystem were selected through analysis of earthworm diversities. Depending on the degree of pesticide use, the fields were devided into conventional, less-pesticide, pesticide free, and organic fields. A nearby field not in agricultural use was chosen as a control. This study was carried out in the greenhouses (lettuce and grape) in 2006 and in orchards (apple, pear, peach, citrus and grape) in 2007. Earthworm was collected from 50 $\times$ 50 $\times$ 10 cm$^3$ of respective soil. We found 11 species from 5 genera and 3 families, and 12 species from 4 genera and 3 families in the greenhouses and in orchards, respectively. The contents of organic matter in soil in the greenhouses were variable but quite less so in orchards. Amynthas heteropodus occurred most frequently in both sites suggesting that it could be adopted as a bioindicator in agroecosystem in Korea.
Mating disruption (MD) has been widely used to effectively control Grapholita molesta in apple orchards. A simultaneous mating disruption (SMD) techniques have been developed to control both G. molesta and G. dimorpha. This study was performed to determine the practical parameters to apply the SMD technique to field conditions. To determine the application amount of SMD lures, a dispenser containing 10 mg pheromone was placed at different numbers of trees in an orchard. Application at every other tree (= one dispenser per two trees) was relatively safe to expect effective MD efficiency in both wax and polyethylene (PE) formulations. One time application at the end of March was enough to maintain a year round MD efficacy against both species. A fence treatment using food trap was applied to prevent any immigratory mated females from nearby untreated regions. To enhance the food trap by adding host-derived secondary compounds, terpinyl acetate (TA) was screened to be effective to attract females of Grapholita molesta among six compounds contained in apple fruit extracts. Among different TA concentrations, 0.05% TA treatment was the most effective to attract the adults. A mixture of TA and sugar was effective to attract and kill females and called FAKT (female attract-to-kill techniques). FAKT was treated at approximately 6 m interval at the edge of the apple orchards. The females trapped by the FAKT included mated females possessing vitellogenic oocytes. SMD supplemented with FAKT maintained the high MD efficacy and significantly suppressed leaf damage induced by the two insect pests compared to control or single SMD treatment.
From April to May 1998, Phytophthora rot on pear, which has not been reported in Korea before, became an epidemic in the southeast part of the country under abnormally higher temperature and prolonged rainy days. Average temperature was about $3^{\circ}$ higher than in normal years, and 29 days were rainy during the 2 months in the areas surveyed. Over 1,000 orchards estimated at about 270 ha in 19 cultivation areas were infected by the disease, which occurred on all parts of the tree such as leaves, shoots, branches, stems, and flower clusters. Among 43 isolates collected from various locations and plant parts, 41 were identified as Phytophthora cactorum while 2 were identified as P. cambivora based on their mycological characteristics. The representative isolates revealed strong pathogenicity not only to pear but also to apple and peach. Among 23 pear cultivars tested, 7 were estimated as susceptible, 4 were moderate, and 11 were resistant to the pathogen. Results suggest that Phytophthora disease on pear is a potential threat to pear cultivation when environmental factors are favorable to disease development.

An analytical study was conducted in 2002 to observe the relationship between meteorological elements and the fruit quality of 'Tsugaru' apples at 8 orchards. The higher average air temperature in August made a higher content of soluble solids, but showed a lower anthocyanin content. As the average air temperature from April through August increased, flesh firmness decreased; and as the maximum air temperature from April through August increased, Hunter a value also decreased. Additionally, it was observed that the cytohistological characteristics of 'Tsugaru' apples were correlated with the average air temperature during the growing season. As average air temperature during the growing season increased, the epidermal layer of the fruit skin became thinner, starch density in the flesh decreased, intercellular space was larger, and tissue structure became looser.
