  • This study was investigated seasonal variation and species composition of fish species at artificial reefs (octangle three-stage compartment type and dice type)and natural rock in the Shinyang-Ri coastal waters off Jeju Island with visual census method in January 2009, April 2009, July 2009, September 2009, December 2009, March 2010, June 2010, and September 2010. A total of 44 fish species was occurred, and the dominant fish species were Apogon semilineatus, Chromis notata, Trachurus japonicus, Sebastes thompsoni and Apogon doederleini. The number of individuals of fishes was higher at April 2009 and March 2010, however, lower at June 2010 and September 2010. The number of fish speices was higher at artificial reefs than those of at natural rock. Apogon semilineatus was dominant at octangle three-stage compartment type and the dice type artificial reefs, whereas Chromis notata was for natural rock. These results indicated that artificial reefs were good habitats for a variety of fish species in the Shinyang-Ri coastal waters off Jeju Island.

  • Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance of fish assemblage in the coastal waters off Gori were determined using monthly samples collected by a three-side fyke net in 2006. Of a total of 59 fishes collected, the dominant species were Trachurus japonicus, Mugil cephaIus, Konosirus punctatus, Apogon lineatus, Chelidonichthys spinosus, Ditrema temmincki, Sebastes schlegeli and Apogon semilineatus. These 8 fishes accounted for 92.7% of the total number of individuals collected. The number of fish species, number of individuals, biomass and species diversity indices fluctuated with the seasons. The peak number of fishes occurred in December, whereas biomass of fishes was the highest in March. The number and biomass of fishes were lower in January corresponded with the low temperatures, and the diversity indices were lower in December than in any other month.

  • The author has collected as many as 35 species belonging to 25 genera in 18 families by trap net in the fishing ground of Chromis notatus along Seogwipo coast in Jeju-do. Among 35 species included are 6 species of Labridae, 4 species of Scorpaenidae, 3 species of Pomacentridae, and 3 species of Monacanthidae. In regard to the amount of catch, more than $90\%$ are Chromis natatus which are mainly caught within the depth of $15\~25m$, and the rest are largely Apogon semilineatus and those belonging to Labridae. ; Some ornamental fishes, subtropical fishes and some rare species are also collected.

  • Samples were obtained with a set net during 7 months between March and October in 1987 off the coast of Hwasun, southern part of Cheju Island. Most of organisms, representing 36 species, were less than 20cm(96%) in length, and 30g(74%) in weight. The four most abundant species were jack mackerel, Trachurus japonicus ; squid, Todarodes pacificus ; mackerel, Scomber japonicus ; and Apogon semilineatus, which comprised about 89% of the total individuals and about 70% of the total weight. Diversity index, the number of species and information index for individual were high in early spring, even though biomass was not abundant. On the other hand, diversity index and information index for individual were relatively high in August in spite of low occurrence of the species number. A cluster analysis of 24 species which appeared more than twice during the 7 samplings were illustrated from the similarity matrix. All of the 24species were grouped at the 0.14 similarity level. They were divided into four groups at 0.50 level.
