  • To provide basic information for wildlife management, we investigated the distribution and ecology of wild mice in Mt. Keumwon recreational forests. The trapped wild mice were a total of 4 species such as Eothenomys regulus, Apodemus speciosus peninsulae, Apodemus agarius, and Crocidura suaveolens. A total of 79 individuals from four species were trapped. Number of Eothenomys regulus was the highest as 41 individuals followed by Apodemus speciosus peninsulae of 31 individuals, Apodemus agarius of 4 individuals, and Crocidura suaveolens of 4 individuals. Depending on forest type, 51 individuals were captured in broad-leaved forests, whereas 28 individuals were captured in coniferous forests. Average weight of the trapped Eothenomys regulus, Apodemus speciosus peninsulae, Apodemus agarius, and Crocidura suaveolens was 37.13 g, 36.29 g, 31.25 g, and 15 g, respectively. Among the trapped wild mice, vole which has the largest head and ears were Eothenomys regulus and vole which has the longest tail was Apodemus speciosus peninsulae and Apodemus agarius (p<0.5). This study might be valuable to control and predict some damages related to wild mice in Mt. Keumwon for protecting forest trees.

  • Samples of ho subspecies of striped field mice, Apodemus agrarius coreue & Apodemus ograrius cheiuensis, from four localities in Korea were used for the analyses of mitochondrial DNA fragment patterns resulted from the digestion with eight restriction enzvmes. A total of 31 fragments were recognized and 15 clones were revealed. The 15 clones were grouped into four major subgroups. One sample from Cheongiu was distinct, and formed one of the four major subgroups: the mean divergence wi6 other subgroups was 4.6 per cent, and extensive analyses using samples from various sites are necessary to clarify the taxonomic status of the subgroup. Samples from Cheju island constituted another subgroup, and they should be named as hpodemus cheiuensis. Samples from Wan island composed still another subgroup, and thew seemed to be another population of Apodemus chejuensis: further analvses are needed for the classification of Apodemus cheiuensis. In the last subgroup composed of six of seven samples from Cheongiu and four samples from Haenam, two samples from Cheonsiu and one sample from Haenam were identical in their mitochondrial genotypes, indicating that these striped field mice from Cheongiu and Haenam have close maternal relationship.

  • This study was conducted four ecological survey of field mice of Mt. Chuisuh in Yangsan City, Kyungnam from June, 2000 to March, 2001 for the understanding of field mice damage to forest. The results are obtained as follows. 1. The species of field mice collected were Apodemus agrarius, Apodemus peninsulae and Eothenomys regulus, and Crocidura suaveolens of insectvore. 2. The total collecting rate were 8.1% collected 61 individuals of field mice from 758 trap. 3. The rate among the 61 field mice collected were 45.9% in Apodemus agrarius, 29.5% in Eothenomys regulus, 19.7% in Apodemus peninsulae, and 4.9% in Crocidura suaveolens. 4. The constitution of weight of field mice was 16-51.9g in Apodemus agrarius, 12-25.9g in Apodemus peninsulae, 16-45.9g in Eothenomys regulus, and 12-15.9g in Crocidura suaveolens. 5. The sex ratio of field mice was 48.0% : 52.0% in Apodemus agrarius, 50.0% : 50.0% in Apodemus peninsulae, 55.6% : 44.4% in Eothenomys regulus, and 66.7% : 33.3% in Crocidura suaveolens. 6. The average body lengh was 104.33mm in Eothenomys regulus, 96.04mm in Apodemus agrarius, 94.50mm in Apodemus peninsulae, and 76.33mm in Crocidura suaveolens. 7. The average tail lengh was 92.75mm in Apodemus peninsulae, 80.65mm in Apodemus agrarius, 41.0mm in Crocidura suaveolens, and 40.33mm in Eothenomys regulus. 8. The breeding period of field mice in Mt. Chuisuh presumes from about the early of March to end of October. Specially, The Eothenomys regulus was ascertained the breeding period in December, discovered first time in korea through this experimental study. 9. The average litter size of field mice was 4.5 in Apodemus agrarius, 4.7 in Apodemus peninsulae, and 3.4 in Eothenomys regulus.

  • Four external and 27 cranial characters of Korean field mice (Apodemus peninsuluek from nine localities in eastern Asia, representing ave subspecies, were analyzed by multivariate statistical methods. Three forms were recognized: a large-size form from Korea (subspecies peninsulael, southern Manchuria (praeto4, and northern Manchuria (majofi a middle-size form from urestern Siberia (tschergal and southuvestern China (sowerbyi); a small-size form from northeastern China (sowerbyi). It is also revealed that variations among the three forms are clinal rind circular. It is confirmed that Apodemus peninsuloe could be classified into two subspecies (peninsulae and sowerbyl) within the distribution range in the continent of Asia, as noted tv Corbel (1978). However, it is found that subspecies peninsulae includes praetor and moior and that subspecies sowerbyi includes tscherga, indicating that subspecies tscherga is not the synonym of subspecies peninsulae, but that of subspecies sowerbyi.

  • Thirty nine samples of striped field mice (Apodemus agrarius coreae Thomas) from eight localities in the Korean peninsula were used for the analyses of mitochondria1 DNA (mtDNA) fragment patterns resulted from the digestion with eight restriction enzymes. A total of 31 fragments were recognized and seven mtDNA clones were revealed: one clone consisted of 32 among 39 samples from eight localities (1 of 1 from Sogcho, 4 of 5 from Mt. Chiak, 3 of 3 from Mt. Weolak, 2 of 2 from Mt. Sogri, 2 of 2 from Mt. Deokyoo, 3 of 4 from Mt. Jiri, 2 of 4 from Haenam, and 15 of 18 from Cheongju). The nucleotide-sequence divergences (p) among seven mtDNA clones ranged from 0.2% to 2.3% and distinct subgroups were not resulted from the grouping of these clones. It is confirmed that striped field mcie from the Korean peninsula is a single subspecies of Apodemus agrarius (A. agrarius coreae) because they were not divided into separate subgroups in their mtDNA genotypes.

  • Specimens of five species of Apodemus(A. agrarius, A. chevrieri, A. draco, A. latronum, and A. peninsulae) from east Asia (Korea and China) were used for numerical taxonomic analyses with 31 external and cranial characters. Two groups and eight subgroups within them were recognized: [I; a large-size form; (A. agrarius chejuensis), (A. chevrieri), (A. draco orestes and A. latronum), and(A. peninsulae peninsulae and A. p. preator)], [II; a small-size form; (A. agrarius coreae), (A. agrarius manchuricus, A. a. ningpoensis, and A. a. pallidior), (A. draco draco), and (A. peninsulae sowerbyi)]. Conclusions based on morphometric analyses are such as followings: 1) Morphometric characters appeared not to be useful in order to distinguish two subgenera in Apodemus (Apodemus and Alsomys), 2) further analysis is necessary to determine whether or not A. draco and A. latronum are conspecific, and 3) A. a. chejuensis is in morphometric characters the largest form among five species of Apodemus studied. Moreover, it is confirmed: 1) A. agrarius, A. chevrieri, and A. peninsulae are distinct species, 2) A. draco and A. latronum are not conspecific with A. peninsulae. 3) Three forms of A. agrarius (large-size form, medium-size form, and small-size form) can be recognized as three subspecies [(A. a. chejuensis), (A. agrarius coreae), and (A, a, ningpoensis including A. a. manchuricus and A. a. pallidior)], 4)A. draco draco and A. draco orestes are distinct subspecies, 5) A. peninsulae peninsulae (including A. p. preator) and A. p. sowerbyi are distinct subspecies.

  • Age variation and secondary sexual dimorphism in four external and 27 cranial characters of 102 specimens of striped firld mice, Apodemus agrarius coreae Thomas, from Cheongju, Korea, were analyzed statistically. Specimens were classified as subadults, young adults, middle-aged adults, and old adults, and variation of morphometric characters among the four age classes was evident. Significant secondary sexual dimorphism among sexes of the same age class was not revealed. Teh specimens of the same age class have to be used in further analyses to clarify geographic variation of morphometric characters in Apodemus agrarius from Korea.

  • Univariate and multivariate analyses of morphometric characters were performed with samples of three subspecies of striped field mice (Apodemus agrarius coreae, A. agrarius pallescens, and A. agrarius chejuensis). It was found that the samples of A. agrarius chejuensis from Jeju-Do were distintc from those of the other two subspecies from the Korean peninsular, whereas subspecies coreae was similar to subspecies pallescens: it is concluded that A. agrarius pallescens is a synonym of A. agrarius coreae. Further analyses will be needed to clearify the subspecific status of A. agrarius chejuensis.
