Biological control of aphids using "banker-plants with the parasitoiid, Aphidius colemani Viereck (BPAC)" was carried out on cucumber in greenhouse. The BPAC consisting of barley seedlings infested with Schiraphis graminum (Rondani) enhanced the early establishment of Aphidius colemani in the greenhouse and prolonged the control of Aphis gossypii on May 8, 2001 The BPAC was placed in the greenhouse at transplanting at the rate of 1 per 30 m2 of cucumber. Although good control effect was gained until early August after placing banker plants on May 9, the effect after then because of high temperature. The aphid population on cucumber in control plots reached to a peak on June 26, and decreased because of entomopathogenic fungus for rainy season of July, and increased again to a very high population on August.
As the results achieved by the evaluation of toxicities on an aphid parasitoid, Aphidius colemani by 79 pesticides registered as horticultural pesticide and 4 adjuvants far pest control, 6 insecticides including a-cypermethrin, 13 fungicides including metalaxyl-M+mancozeb and 4 acaricides including bifenazate showed low toxicity against A. colemani adult. Low toxicity was showed in all the 4 adjuvants as well. In residual toxicity test from 40 pesticides which showed toxicity more than 50%, A. colemani was safe from 11 pesticides from the 3th day after treatment, 7 pesticides from the 5th day after treatment and 14 pesticides from the 7th day after treatment, respectively. But, chlorpyrifos-methyl, diflubenzuron+chlorpyrifos, etofenprox+diazinone and imidachloprid+chlorpyrifos showed high toxicities reaching 100%, 97.7%, 100% and 100% respectively, even from the 7th day after treatment. To evaluate the control effect by A. colemani against Myzus persicae in a greenhouse, A. colemani was released at parasitoid versus aphids rates of 1:50 and 1:100 when the population of M persicae was 50 per plant. After release, aphids population remained steady for 20 days after release at the level of around 60 aphids per plant. During the investigation, insecticides fur thrips control and fungicides for powdery mildew control were treated, but didn't affect the mummy forming of A. colemani. It may be suggested from these results that the selected insecticides, fungicides, acaricides and adjuvent could be incorporated into the integrated M. persicae management system with A. colemani on greenhouse cultivation.

This study was conducted to identify methods to improve the emergence rate of Aphidius spp. in agricultural fields. The emergence rates of Aphidius colemani released into agricultural fields were 37.2%, 54.4% under 'sun blind' conditions, and 63.1% in the group in which shade and moisture were provided. Provision of shade and moisture upon introduction of Aphidius spp., can increase adult emergence 1.69 times more relative to a control group.
Aphidius colemani and Orius laevigatus aree natural enemies of the control cotton aphid and western flower thrips, which are the major pests of cucumber plants. We evaluated the low toxicity of 47 fungicides against A. colemani and O. laevigatus, and we investigated the simultaneous effect of the natural enemies with fungicide of low toxicity on the pests. The toxicity of DBEDC, hexaconazole, pyraclostrobin, tribasic copper sulfate, triflumizole, chlorothalonil, flusilazole, folpet, carbendazim+diethofencarb, cymoxanil+fenamidone and trifloxystrobin to A. colemani mummies was more than 50% and to O. laevigatus was low toxic. Among the fungicides with low toxicity, azoxystrobin 20% WP was selected because it could be used simultaneously with A. colemani and O. laevigatus and as a fungicide to control powdery mildew and downy mildew. In 2011, the densities of western flower thrips and cotton aphid increased rapidly in early-May in Gongju and Cheonan, Chungnam Province. When azoxystrobin was used at an interval of 10 days in spring, A. colemani and O. laevigatus were released at an interval of 7 days at the early occurrence of the pests. The natural enemies decreased the densities of the pests; the maximum number of A. colemani mummies was 18 per lower leaf, and the maximum number of O. laevigatus was 0.5 per flower. Azoxystrobin did not influence the densities of A. colemani and O. laevigatus. The results show that the selected fungicides can be used with A. colemani and O. laevigatus for the intergrated pest management of cotton aphid and western flower thrips in cucumber polyvinyl house cultivation.
Biological control of Aphis gossypii by natural enemies was carried out in watermelon from April to June. Aphidius colemani was released 3 times at rate of $2/m^2$ to control A. gossypii(April 24, May 8, and May 22 in 2007). In A. colemani-released plots, A. gossypii showed low population density of < 0.6 per leaf with the highest parasitism of 57.2%, and 2.0~10.6% in the percentage of leaves with aphids. In control, the population of A. gossypii kept on increasing from early May and reached 653.2/leaf on may 29.

In this study, we sought to determine an appropriate LED light source that can be applied for the quality control of Aphidius colemani. Four LED light sources (385, 405, 450, and 660 nm) were evaluated in a Y-tube experiment (choice test) using a 5,000-k white LED as a control. The 385 nm LED light source was found to have attractant effect on A. colemani. In a no-choice test (Y-tube experiment) evaluating the remaining three LED light sources (385, 405, and 450 nm), the attractiveness of these light sources for A. colemani was high in the order 450 nm > 385 nm > 405 nm light, with no statistically significant differences between 450 nm and 385 nm. Given that 385 nm LED illumination may cause skin damage, we selected 450 nm LEDs for application in a device used for the quality control of A. colemani, which we subsequently demonstrated to have an attraction rate of 87.4%. We believe the findings of this study will make a valuable contribution to the quality control of natural enemies.
In this study, we investigated the functional response of aphid parasitoid, Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), on the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Three carbon dioxide concentrations (400, 600, and 1000ppm) and seven host densities (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128) were used during a 24-h period. A type III functional response for A. colemani was fit separately for each CO2 concentration. The estimated handling time (Th) under elevated CO2 (600 ppm and 1000 ppm, 0.015 and 0.014 day) was shorter than that under ambient CO2 (400 ppm, 0.017 day). The proportion of aphids that were parasitized showed the similar characteristic curve under three CO2 concentrations. The highest parasitized rates for A. colemani were 0.57, 0.61, and 0.70 at 16, 32, and 32 aphid density under 400, 600, and 1000ppm, respectively. Although handling time of A. colemani was influenced by elevated CO2 concentrations, the attach rate was not changed much.

This study was performed in the Tropical Plant Resources Research Center of Korea National Arboretum to assess the effects of natural enemy attack on aphid population feeding on tropical plants. We measured the density of leaf-feeding aphids, Myzus persicae and Aphis gossypii, cohabiting with 5 types of tropical plants at intervals of approximately 2 weeks after introducing their natural enemy, Aphidius colemani. The density of aphids cohabiting with 4 types of tropical plants-Sanchezia parvibracteata, Hibiscus rosa-chinensis, Ficus kurzii, and Aloysia triphylla-started decreasing after 2 weeks of observation and was completely in control after 4 weeks of observation; however, the density of aphids cohabiting with the tropical plant, Hamelia patens, increased during 22 weeks of observation but decreased after the $23^{rd}$ week of observation. We suggest that a banker plant is necessary for the maintenance of A. colemani in tropical greenhouses, and monitoring studies on H. patens, which was weakest against the aphids, should be performed. Our results indicate that biological pest management strategies using their natural enemies were formulated for the construction of new tropical greenhouses.

When Aphidius colemani mummies were stored at four different temperatures (6, 8, 10 and 12 ± 1℃), they could be stored at 8℃ for 10 days with over 50% adult emergence. A number of mummies of Rhopalosiphum padi parasitized by A. colemani adults emerged from mummies after 8℃ storage clearly reduced with increasing duration of storage and especially declined with storage longer than 13 days showing < 20% parasitism. However, there were no differences in aphid parasitisms by A. colemani on 3 to 10 days after storage. Over 3 day storage at 8℃ was adversely affected on survival of A. colemani adults. Therefore, cold storage of A. colemani adults is considered as an unsuitable method for mass production of biological control agent. When 2-day-old Meteorus pulchricornis cocoons were stored at 6, 8 and 10 ± 1℃, it was possible to be stored up to 63 days at 8℃, showing the highest emergence. With increasing of cold storage duration at 8℃, parasitism on 2nd and 3rd larval instar of Spodoptera litura by stored M. pulchricornis significantly reduced. However, parasitic rate by M. pulchricornis stored for 2 weeks was similar to that by 1 week stored ones. Therefore, M. pulchricornis cocoons could be stored up to 2 weeks at 8℃ for stockpiling before release.

The effect of natural enemies on four major pests of hot pepper was tested in greenhouses. The aphids were successfully controlled by introducing three Aphidius colemani-banker plants, and releasing 23.3 wasps per $m^2$ on April 16 and 23 wasps per $m^2$ in a greenhouse of 660 $m^2$. To control thrips, Orius laevigatus was released twice, 3.0 bugs per $m^2$ at a time(May $11^{th}$ and June $12^{th}$). The thrips population was controlled within 0.3 thrips per flower during the growing season. To control two species of mites, Tetranychus kanzawai and Polyphagotarsonemus latus, and the silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, a total of 113.7 individuals of Amblyseius swirskii were released twice(May $11^{th}$ and $30^{th}$). The densities of B. tabaci and T. kanzawai were kept within 171.0 individuals/trap and 0.8 individual/leaf, respectively. P. latus was suppressed completely twelve days after release. The cost of the released natural enemies to control the four arthropod pests in this study was 420,000 Won per 660 $m^2$.
