Novel thermo-optically focus-switchable Fresnel zone plates based on phase-change metafilms are designed and analyzed at a visible wavelength (660 nm). By virtue of the large thermo-optic response of vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin film, a phase-change material, four different plasmonic phase-change absorbers are numerically designed as actively tunable Gires-Tournois Al-VO2 metafilms in two and three dimensions. The designed phase-change metafilm unit cells are used as the building blocks of actively focus-switchable Fresnel zone plates with strong focus switching contrast (40%, 83%) and high numerical apertures (1.52, 1.70). The Fresnel zone plates designed in two and three dimensions work as cylindrical and spherical lenses in reflection type, respectively. The coupling between the thermo-optic effect of VO2 and localized plasmonic resonances in the Al nanostructures offer a large degree of freedom in design and high-contrast focus-switching performance based on largely tunable absorption resonances. The proposed method may have great potential in photothermal and electrothermal active optical devices for nonlinear optics, microscopy, 3D scanning, optical trapping, and holographic displays over a wide spectral range including the visible and infrared regimes.

In order to obtain practical and high-quality satellite images containing high-frequency components, a large aperture optical system is required, which has a limitation in that it greatly increases the payload weight. As an attempt to overcome the problem, many multi-aperture optical systems have been proposed, but in many cases, these optical systems do not include high-frequency components in all directions, and making such an high-quality image is an ill-posed problem. In this paper, we use deep learning to overcome the limitation. A deep learning model receives low-quality images as input, estimates the Point Spread Function, PSF, and combines them to output a single high-quality image. We model images obtained from three rectangular apertures arranged in a regular polygon shape. We also propose the Modulation Transfer Function Loss, MTF Loss, which can capture the high-frequency components of the images. We present qualitative and quantitative results obtained through experiments.
The video laryngoscope is a novel instrument for intubation that enables indirect visualization of the upper airway. It is recognized for its ability to enhance Cormack-Lehane grades in the management of difficult airways. Notably, video laryngoscopy is associated with equal or higher rates of intubation success within a shorter time frame than direct laryngoscopy. Video laryngoscopy facilitates faster and easier visualization of the glottis and reduces the need for Magill forceps, thereby shortening the intubation time. Despite the advanced glottic visualization afforded by video laryngoscopy, nasotracheal tube insertion and advancement occasionally fail. This is particularly evident during nasotracheal intubation, where oropharyngeal blood or secretions may obstruct the visual field on the monitor, thereby complicating video laryngoscopy. Moreover, the use of Magill forceps is markedly challenging or nearly unfeasible in this context, especially in pediatric cases. Furthermore, the substantial blade size of video laryngoscopes may restrict their applicability in individuals with limited oral apertures. This study aimed to review the literature on video laryngoscopy, discuss its clinical role in nasotracheal intubation, and address the challenges that anesthesiologists may encounter during the intubation process.
Larger benthic foraminifera (LBF) are a group of marine organisms that inhabit oligotrophic subtropicaltropical photic zones, commonly possess relatively large shells (i.e., tests) with a complex internal structure and host photosynthetic endosymbionts. In this study, we provide a new report of a LBF species belonging to the genus Sorites Ehrenberg, 1839, with a brief description and images of the test. The sediment samples were collected by SCUBA diving from the east coast of Jeju Island (South Korea). The discoidal test shape and annular series of chamberlets with a single row of apertures surrounded by rim indicate that these specimens belong to the genus Sorites, and this is the first record of the genus in Korea. The arrangement of early chamberlets, septular disposition, and the aperture details suggest that the specimens can be assigned to Sorites orbiculus(Forsskål in Niebuhr, 1775). Only three LBF species, including the present species, have been reported from Korean waters. The present study provides additional information for the evaluation of foraminiferal diversity including LBF in Korea and suggests the necessity of continuous investigations to understand the diversity of Sorites species in Korea.
In Korea, a study on the anatomical features of pitch pine (pinus rigida Miller) branch wood through photo-microscopical method was reported in 1972 by Lee. Therefore, as a further study of Lee's on the anatomical features in branch wood of pinus rigida miller that grows in Korea, compression wood, opposite wood, and side wood were selected and treated for the purpose of comparing their structures revealed on cross and radial surface through scanning electron microscope in this study. The obtained results in this study were summarized as follows; 1. The trachied transition from earlywood to late wood is very gradual and the tracheids are nearly regular in both arrangement and size in compression wood but this transition in opposite wood and side wood is abrupt and the tracheids in opposite wood and side wood are less regular than those in compression wood. Also, the annual ring width of opposite wood is narrower than that of compression wood or side wood and the rays revealed on cross surface of side wood are more distinct than compression wood and opposite wood rays. 2. The tracheids of compression wood show roundish trends especially in earlywood but those of opposite wood and side wood show some angular trends. And intercellular space, helical cavity, and spiral check are present in both earlywood and latewood of compression wood but not present in opposite wood and side wood irrespective of earlywood and latewood. 3. The wall thickness of latewood tracheid is similar to that of earlywood tracheid in compression wood whereas the wall thickness of latewood tracheid is by far thicker than that of earlywood tracheid in opposite wood and side wood and the S3 layer of secondary wall is lack in compression wood tracheid unlike opposite wood and side wood tracheid. 4. The tracheids in compression wood are often distorted at their tips unlike those in opposite wood and side wood and the bordered pit in compression wood tracheid is located at the bottom of helical groove unlike that in opposite wood and side wood tracheid. 5. The bordered pits in radial wall of opposite wood and side wood tracheids are oval in shape but those of compression wood tracheids show some modified oval shape. 6. In earlywood of side wood, the small apertures of cross-field pits are roundish triangle to rectangle and the large one are fenestriform through the coalition of two small ones. However, the small apertures of cross-field pits are upright oval and the large ones are procumbent oval shape in earlywood of opposite wood and the apertures of cross-field pits in compression wood are tilted bifacial convex lens shape in earlywood and slit in late wood because of the border on tracheid side.

This study was conducted to evaluate performance of geothermal heat exchanger (GHE) in the combined well and open-closed loops geothermal (CWG) systems. The CWG systems were designed to combine open loop geothermal heat pumps and closed loop geothermal heat pumps for high energy efficiency. GHE of the CWG systems could be installed at pumping wells for agricultural usage. To get optimal heat exchange capacity of GHE of the CWG systems, 4 GHEs with various materials and apertures were tested at laboratory scale. Polyethylene (PE) and stainless steel (STS) were selected as GHE materials. The maximum heat exchange capacity of GHEs were estimated to be in the range of 33.0~104 kcal/min. The heat exchange capacity of STS GHEs was 2.4~3.2 times higher than that of PE GHE. The optimal cross section area of GHE and flow rate of circulating water of GHE were estimated to be $2,500mm^2$ and 113 L/min, respectively. For more complicated GHE of the CWG systems, it is necessary to evaluate GHEs at various scales.
This study was conducted to understand and to compare the qualitative aspects of anatomical characteristics in compression wood (CW), lateral wood (LW), and opposite wood (OW) in a stem of Ginkgo biloba. The qualitative analysis was examined by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. CW in Ginkgo biloba disks were dark brown in color, and the OW and LW were light brown in color. CW and OW showed abrupt transitions from earlywood to latewood, while LW showed a gradual transition. Cross sections of CW presented circular tracheids with angular outlines, many intercellular spaces, and varying sizes of lumens. Cross sections of LW and OW showed rectangular tracheids, fewer intercellular spaces, and varying sizes of lumens. In radial sections, CW showed an irregular arrangement of tracheids in earlywood, while LW and OW showed comparatively regular arrangements. Slit-like bordered pits on the tracheid cell wall, piceoid pits in the crossfield, and a few spiral checks were present in CW. LW and OW showed bordered pits with slightly oval-shaped apertures, as well as cuppresoid pits in the crossfields. Rays were primarily uniseriate, with few biseriate rays in the tangential sections of CW, LW, and OW. The tips of the tracheids were branched in CW but had a normal appearance in LW and OW.
One dimensional inhomogeneous phase modulation effects on the MTF of optical system was investigated. The lens under test was a doublet made in Korea. It was 36 mm effective diameter, 128.04 mm effective focal length. The ray-fans and spot diagrams were calculated and presented on the picture for on-axis and off-axis (field of view, $1^{\circ}$ and $2^{\circ}$). Phase modulation was carried out by positioning a phase modulator close contacted with the lens under test. One was linear type that had linearly increasing phase retardation and the other was stepped type which had phase difference $\pi$ for each step. The MTFs were measured on the Gaussian image plane and were compared with one another. The MTFs of linear type phase modulated apertures had a little lower values than the MTF of unmodulated aperture for on-axis but most of all the MTFs of one dimensional phase modulated aperture are improved than the MTF of unmodulated aperture.
Cyclic shear test system, which is capable of measuring flow rate inside rock joint, was established to investigate the hydraulic behavior of rough rock joints under various loading conditions. Laboratory hydraulic tests during compression and shear were conducted for artificial rough rock joints. Prior to tests, aperture characteristics of specimens were examined by measuring surface topography. Permeability changes under compression were well approximated with several hydraulic model. Hydraulic behavior conformed to dilation characteristics in the first stage, and permeability increased with increase of dilation. As the shear displacement progressed, flow rate became somewhat constant due to gouge production and offset of apertures. Hydraulic behavior under cyclic shear loading was also influenced by the degradation of asperities and gouge production. In addition. the relation between hydraulic aperture and mechanical aperture under compression and shear loading was investigated and compared.
The effect of $Cd^2+$ on chlorophyll content, water potentials, ion transport, photosynthesis, stomatal apertures and $Cd^2+$ accumulation of organs in Commelina communis was investigated. 3-weeks old Commelina. communis was transferred to and grown in Hoagland solution in the presence or absence of 5 mM $Cd^2+$ for 4 days. $Cd^2+$ was accumulated in all parts of the organs including leaves, roots and stem. The proximity from the root and the age of leaf were significant factors responsible for the distribution of cadmium. Most of $Cd^2+$ was accumulated in the first leaf which was the nearest from the root. $Cd^2+$) accumulation in the leaves led to significant reductions in a series of physiological metabolism. $Cd^2+$ reduced total chlorophyll content up to 70%, and changed chlorophyll a/b ratio to 2. $Cd^2+$ also reduced about 20% of water potential. The treatment of $Cd^2+$ showed about 60% inhibition of photosynthetic activity when measured at various light intensity (100-1,000 $\mu$mol $Em^-2s^-1$). Similar effect was found in terms of stomatal conductance. Therefore, it could be concluded that the treatment of $Cd^2+$ decrease or block various physiological activities.
