  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the rate of opening windows that makes residents of a flat-type apartment feel pleasant in summer time. A few conditions were simulated on the wind flow that pass through internal and external spaces of the flat-type apartment, utilizing CFX program. The simulation was made with the criteria for the rates of opening window at 20%, 50%, 70% and 100%. When the rate of window opening was more 50%, the wind speed(more than 1m/s) that makes the residents feel pleasant was observed in more 60% of the internal space. When the all windows of the apartments were opened, the heat island phenomenon was almost disappeared and the pleasant wind flow was more evenly distributed in the external spaces. If residents of apartments recognize the result of this study and practice in agrement on opening windows in summer, it is expected to contribute to minimizing the energy consumption for air conditioning.

  • Though super-highrise apartment buildings have become increasingly widespread, their negative effects on the residents have not been investigated sufficiently and practically in domestic situations. In particular, the foreign discussion on residential environment and the residents' health can not be applied domestically due to physical or cultural differences including physical residential space structure and life-style. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the inter-relationship between residence in super-highrise apartments and their residents' health, to reveal the problems which exist. for this purpose, a parental-response health evaluation - questionnaire on children's physical, emotional and behavioral characteristics was given to a total of 336 persons. The health of the children living in super-highrise apartments is evaluated to be good, and is related to what floor of the apartment building people live on. It is represented that the higher the story, the better the children's health. However, there is no meaningful difference according to various evaluation items including the frequency and type of disease, emotional health, behavioral characteristics, etc. Therefore, it cannot be said that children's health shows no meaningful differences depending on what floor they live on. The parents dwelling on higher floors of the building display a more careful educational attitude. This is because they feel anxious about the children's safety as shown by the fact they live on higher stories.

  • A hybrid ventilation system was introduced to predict the ventilation performance of the apartments. This ventilation system was composed of the natural supply-air inlet and the forced exhaust-air outlet. Analysis was conducted by CFD technique and was performed on three ventilating flow rates; 30, 60, 120m3/h. As the results, residents feel comfortable thermally for 60m3/h. In the case of 120m3/h, however, residents feel uncomfortable both thermally and in air currents. In this study the energy saving for space heating is also an important factor. In the case of whole region with 180m3/h, residents feel comfortable at each region of the model apartment. It is shown that this hybrid ventilation system is possible method for the apartment house.

  • This study analyzes the residents' preference of apartment unit remodeling proposals for the 3-bay old apartments built in the 1st phase New Town. The remodeling unit plans were previously developed for a 3-bay large-sized unit plan (over 85m2) and a 3-bay medium-sized unit plan (60~85m2). Surveys and interview were conducted with the residnets of the two apartment complexes in Bundang. The contents of the questionnaire consisted of the preferred plan, the reason for the preference, the improvement factors, etc. A total of 88 questionnaires were received. It was found that two-thirds of respondents favored the general 3LDK format, where living rooms and kitchens were located in the middle of the front and rear bay. The one-third of the respondents favored a plan combining the living room and the kitchen in the front. It was also found that the limitation of the remodeling unit plan caused by the location of existing bearing walls should be carefully considered, and that many residents asked additional storage space.

  • This study attempts to examine the average number of stored items of apartment residents composed of 4 family members and to compare the quantitative differences of the stored items according to the apartment size and the stage of life-cycle. The finding shows that the number of items stored in apartments increases as the size of apartments and the stag of life-cycle of husband and wife living in the apartments of more than 180m2 increase approcimately twice, compared to those in the apartments of less than 83m2. Therefore, the storage space in apartments should be designed more effectively considering the change of the stored items in relation to of the apartment size and their stage of life-cycle. This study suggests the specific design of the built-in closets for clothings, sheets, accessories and shoes based on the number of the items.

  • This study was to confirm the effectiveness of crime prevention in an apartment complex environmentally designed for domestic crime prevention. The researchers surveyed 267 residents on the community, fear of crime, and crime victimization. They arrived at the following conclusions. The authorization complex received higher security satisfaction results than the unauthorized complex; residents were less afraid of crime and more active in the apartment complex community. These results differ from previous studies in that the fear of crime is not related to a crime victim experience and that the fear of crime is low when there are less households in the apartment complex. Therefore, effectiveness of crime prevention abroad should not be accepted in a domestic residential environment.
