Three dogs with suspected patent ductus arteriosus were referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of College of Veterinary Medicine, Konkuk University because of cough, shortness of breath, exercise intolerance, and syncope, Continuous murmur and thrill were detected in physical examination. Left ventricular enlargement, cardiomegaly, bulged main pulmonary artey were found in radiography. Tall R wave, wide P wave, atrial fibrillation, and turbulent flow were observed in electrocardiogram and echocardiogram. Thoracotomy was performed at left fourth intercostal space under isoflurane anesthesia. Patent ductus arteriosus was double ligated with 1-0 silk. The median (mean ${\pm}$ SD) diameter of patents was $8.0{\pm}2.0mm$. The median operation time was $36{\pm}6.6min$. On examination right after surgery, continuous murmur, thrill, atrial fibrillation, and turbulent flow were disappeared. On 30 days after surgery, clinical signs, left ventricular enlargement, and, bulged main pulmonary artery were disappeared. VHS 12.5 and 13.5, R wave 3.3 and 3.0 mV, and P wave 0.05 and 0.05 sec were decreased to 10.0 and 10.5, 1.8 and 2.0 mV, and 0.04 and 0.04 sec respectively in case 1 and 2. Ratio of aorta and main pulmonary artery in diameter was changed 1 : 1.3 and 1 : 1.6 into 1 : 1.1 and 1 : 1 respectively in case 1 and 2. Mild tear developed during dissection in case 3 and hemorrhage was controlled by vascular Devakey forceps. However, the dog died. On 12 months after surgery, patients (case 1 and case 2) have not showed abnormal signs.

Background: A toxic dose of bupivacaine produces vasodilation in isolated aortas. The goal of this in vitro study was to investigate the cellular mechanism associated with bupivacaine-induced vasodilation in isolated endothelium-denuded rat aortas precontracted with phenylephrine. Methods: Isolated endothelium-denuded rat aortas were suspended for isometric tension recordings. The effects of nifedipine, verapamil, iberiotoxin, 4-aminopyridine, barium chloride, and glibenclamide on bupivacaine concentration-response curves were assessed in endothelium-denuded aortas precontracted with phenylephrine. The effect of phenylephrine and KCl used for precontraction on bupivacaine-induced concentration-response curves was assessed. The effects of verapamil on phenylephrine concentration-response curves were assessed. The effects of bupivacaine on the intracellular calcium concentration ($[Ca^{2+}]_i$) and tension in aortas precontracted with phenylephrine were measured simultaneously with the acetoxymethyl ester of a fura-2-loaded aortic strip. Results: Pretreatment with potassium channel inhibitors had no effect on bupivacaine-induced relaxation in the endothelium-denuded aortas precontracted with phenylephrine, whereas verapamil or nifedipine attenuated bupivacaine-induced relaxation. The magnitude of the bupivacaine-induced relaxation was enhanced in the 100mM KCl-induced precontracted aortas compared with the phenylephrine-induced precontracted aortas. Verapamil attenuated the phenylephrine-induced contraction. The magnitude of the bupivacaine-induced relaxation was higher than that of the bupivacaine-induced $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ decrease in the aortas precontracted with phenylephrine. Conclusions: Taken together, these results suggest that toxic-dose bupivacaine-induced vasodilation appears to be mediated by decreased calcium sensitization in endothelium-denuded aortas precontracted with phenylephrine. In addition, potassium channel inhibitors had no effect on bupivacaine-induced relaxation. Toxic-dose bupivacaine-induced vasodilation may be partially associated with the inhibitory effect of voltage-operated calcium channels.
Ultraviolet light radiation (UVR) did not affect resting tension of isolated thoracic aortae of rats. In aortic rings contracted with phenylephrine, however, UVR produced contractile and relaxant responses in preparations with and without endothelium, respectively. The contractile response was dependent upon the duration $(10{\sim}320\;sec)$ of irradiation, while the relaxation was not. UVR-induced contractions in endothelium-intact rings were significantly potentiated by increasing the concentrations of phenylephrine from $10^{-7}M$ to $10^{-5}M$, and also by addition of $10^{-6}M$ acetylcholine, $10^{-7}M$ isoproterenol and $3.5{\times}10^{-8}M$ nitroglycerine. However, addition of $10^{-6}M$ phentolamine, or $10^{-7}M$ to $10^{-6}M$ LY83583 inhibited the contraction or reversed the contraction to a relaxation. In endothelium-removed preparations the UVR-induced relaxation was attenuated by increasing concentractions of phenylephrine, and by addition of isoproterenol, nitroglycerin, phentolamine or LY83583. These results suggest that UVR produces contractile and relaxant responses in rat thoracic aortae with and without endothelium, respectively, and that the contractile effect results from the inhibition of endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) release by UVR the inhibition of and/or is in part re-lated to some endothelium-derived contractile factors (EDCFs).

This study was designed to observe the effects of dietary P/S ratio on lipid component in plasma and tissues. Changes in plasma total cholesterol and triglyceride concentration and also cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in liver, small intestine and aorta were determined in adult rats fed experimental diets providing different dietary P/S ratios as 0.05, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0, respectively. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Feed efficiency ratio was not significantly different among six groups at 2nd week. But at 4th week, the higher the dietary P/S ratio the higher the feed efficiency ratio. 2. Plasma cholesterol level was getting higher as increased dietary P/S ratio at 2nd week, But that was significantly decreased as P/S ratio increased at 4th week. 3. Plasma triglyceride level was significantly decreased as increased dietary P/S ratio at 4th week. 4. Cholesterol concentrations in liver and small intestines were getting higher as increased dietary P/S ratio at 4th week, But aortas cholesterol concentration was not influenced by P/S ratio. 5. Triglyceride concentrations in liver and small intestines were significantly increased as increased dietary P/S ratio. On the contrary, triglyceride concentration in aortas was not influenced by P/S ratio.
Endothelial cells are a vital constituent of most mammalian organs and are required to maintain the integrity of these tissues. These cells also play a major role in angiogenesis, inflammatory reactions, and in the regulation of thrombosis. Angiogenesis facilitates pulp formation and produces the vessels which are essential for the maintenance of tooth homeostasis. These vessels can also be used in bone and tissue regeneration, and in surgical procedures to place implants or to remove cancerous tissue. Furthermore, endothelial cell regeneration is the most critical component of the tooth generation process. The aim of the present study was to stimulate endothelial regeneration at a site of acute cyclophosphamide (CP)-induced endothelial injury by treatment with human umbilical cord-derived endothelial/mesenchymal stem cells (hEPCs). We randomly assigned 16 to 20-week-old female NOD/SCID mice into three separate groups, a hEPC ($1{\times}10^5$ cells) transplanted, 300mg/kg CP treated and saline (control) group. The mice were sacrificed on days 5 and 10 and blood was collected via the abdominal aorta for analysis. The alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), serum alkaline phosphatase (s-ALP), and albumin (ALB) levels were then evaluated. Tissue sections from the livers and kidneys were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE) for microscopic analysis and were subjected to immunohistochemistry to evaluate any changes in the endothelial layer. CP treatment caused a weight reduction after one day. The kidney/body weight ratio increased in the hEPC treated animals compared with the CP only group at 10 days. Moreover, hEPC treatment resulted in reduced s-ALP, AST, ALT levels compared with the CP only group at 10 days. The CP only animals further showed endothelial injuries at five days which were recovered by hEPC treatment at 10 days. The number of CD31-positive cells was increased by hEPC treatment at both 5 and 10 days. In conclusion, the CP-induced disruption of endothelial cells is recovered by hEPC treatment, indicating that hEPC transplantation has potential benefits in the treatment of endothelial damage.
This convergence study analyzed the effectiveness of contrast agent reduction by normal saline solution dilution in the computed tomography of arteries of lower limb. 48 patients of 125 cc contrast agent and 30 patients of the same amount divided at a ratio of 7:3 for the contrast agent and normal saline solution were studied. The average attenuation coefficient(HU) and signal to noise ratio(SNR) of abdominal aorta, femoral artery, popliteal artery and posterior tibial artery at each image were evaluated quantitatively and the four criteria in the five point scale was conducted qualitatively by two radiologists and four radiological technologists. In the quantitative evaluation, both HU and SNR had high average score before dilation but there were no statistical significance by independent t-test(p>0.05). In the qualitative evaluation, there were a little differences in the average scores between 4.86~4.77 of original contrast agent and 4.83~4.67 of dilated contrast agent but there were no statistical significance(p>0.05). In the computed tomography of arteries of lower limb, the dilated contrast agent doesn't influence image quality and reduces overall contrast agent and lowers iodine content per unit of molecular therefore will contribute to decrease side effect of contrast agent.

Both bronchial leiomyoma and pulmonary sequestration are rare conditions, and to the best of our knowledge there are no reports of the two conditions coexisting. We report a female patient with bronchial leiomyoma with acquired pulmonary sequestration who presented with dyspnea, cough and purulent sputum. The patient had been treated for pneumonia at a local medical clinic. but was transferred to our clinic beacausr there was no clinical improvement. A 3-D computed tomography scan revealed a 1.5 cm sized mass near the distal portion of the left main bronchus and an anomalous artery arising from the aorta. The patient showed clinical improvement after a left lower lobectomy and a ligation of the anomalous artery.
This experiment was performed to study the morphological responses of the pigment epithelial cell and the Bruch's membrane of the retina of rat following X-ray irradiation. Male rats were divided into normal and experimental groups. The heads of the rats, under sodium thiopental anesthesia, were exposed to 3,000 rads or 6,000 rads of radiation in a single dose, respectively. The source was a Mitsubishi Linear Accelerator ML-4MV. The target to skin distance was 80cm, and the. dose rate was 200 rads/min. The experimental groups were sacrificed on the 6th hour, 2nd and 6th day after X-ray irradiation. Under anesthesia, 1% glutaraldehyde-1% paraformaldehyde solution(0.1M Millonig's phosphate buffer, pH 7.3) was perfused through the left ventricle and ascending aorta. Pieces of the tissue taken from the posterior region of the retina were fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde-1.5% paraformaldehyde(0.1M Millonig's phosphate buffer, pH 7.3) and 1% osmium tetroxide(0.1M Millonig's phosphate buffer, pH7.3), and embedded in araldite mixture. The ultrathin sections contrasted with uranyl acetate and lead citrate were observed with JEM 100 CX-II electron microscope. The results were as follow; 1. The morphological changes of the pigment epithelial cells were not pronounced after exposure to 3,000 rads of X-ray. But on the 6th hour after exposure to 6,000 rads of X-ray, bulging nuclear membrane protruding into the cytoplasm and nuclear chromatin clumped into numerous masses along the nuclear membrane were observed. At the 2nd and 6th day post-irradiation, partial cytolysis or necrosis were seen. 2. The thickness of the Bruch's membrane of the experimental groups were increased in the time and dose range covered by this study, and splitting or diffusing basal laminae of the choriocapillary layer were observed frequently in the experimental group. Above results suggest that large amount(6,000 rads) of head irradiation induce direct hazardous effects on the pigment epitherial cells and Bruch's membrane of the retina of the rat, but pigment epithelial cells are more radioresistant than Bruch's membrane.
Background: Hypothermia protects the brain by suppressing the cerebral metabolism and it is performed well enough before the total circulatory arrest(TCA) in the operation of aortic disease. Generally, TCA has been performed depending on the rectal or nasopharyngeal temperatures; however, there is no definite range of optimal temperature for TCA or an objective indicator determining the temperature for safe TCA. In this study, we tried to determine the optimal range of temperature for safe hypothermic circulatory arrest by using the intraoperative electroencephalogram(EEG), and studied the role of EEG as an indicator of optimal hypothermia. Material and Method: Between March, 1999 and August 31, 2000, 27 patients underwent graft replacement of the part of thoracic aorta using hypothermia and TCA with intraoperative EEG. The rectal and nasopharyngeal temperatures were monitored continuously from the time of anesthetic induction and the EEG was recorded with a ten-channel portable electroencephalography from the time of anesthetic induction to electrocerebral silence(ECS). Result: On ECS, the rectal and nasopharyngeal temperatures were not consistent but variable(rectal 11$^{\circ}C$ -$25^{\circ}C$, nasopharynx 7.7$^{\circ}C$ -23$^{\circ}C$). The correlation between two temperatures was not significant(p=0.171). The cooling time from the start of cardiopulmonary bypass to ECS was also variable(25-127min), but correlated with the body surface area(p=0.027). Conclusion: We have found that ECS appeared at various body temperatures, and thus, the use of rectal or nasopharyngeal temperature were not useful in identifying ECS. Conclusively, we can not fully assure cerebral protection during hypothermic circulatory arrest in regards to the body temperatures, and therefore, the intraoperative EEG is one of the necessary methods for determining the range of optimal hypothermia for safe circulatory arrest. :
Background: Electrical breathing pacing has many advantages over mechanical ventilation. However, clinically permanent diaphragmatic pacing has been applied to limited patients and few temporary pacing has been reported. Our purpose is to investigate the feasibility of temporary electrical diaphragm pacing in explothoracotomy canine cases. Methods: Five dogs were studied under the general anesthesia. Left 5th intercostal space was opened. Self designed temporary pacing leads were placed around the left phrenic nerve and connected to the myostimulator. Chest wall was closed after tube insertion with underwater drainage. Millar catheter was introduced to the aorta and right atrium. Swan-Ganz catheter was introduced to the pulmonary artery. When the self respiration was shallow with deep anesthesia, hemodynamic and tidal volume were measured with the stimulator on. Results: Tidal volume increased from 143.3$\pm$51.3 ml to 272.3$\pm$87.4 ml(p=0.004). Right atrial diastolic pressure decreased from 0.7$\pm$4.0 mmHg to -10.5$\pm$4.7 mmHg(p=0.005). Pulmonary arterial diastolic pressure decreased from 6.1+2.5 mmHg to 1.2$\pm$4.8 mmHg(p<0.001). The height of water level in chest tube to show intrathoracic pressure change was from 10.3$\pm$6.7cmH$_{2}$O to 20.0$\pm$5.3 cmH$_{2}$O. Conclusion: Temporary electrical diaphragmatic pacing is a simple method to assist respiration in explothoracotomy canine cases. Self designed pacing lead is implantable and removable. Negative pressure ventilation has favorable effects on the circulatory system. Therefore, clinical application of temporary breathing pacing is feasible in thoracotomy patients to assist cardiorespiratory function.
