Egg Development and Morphology of Larva and Juvenile of the Oryzias latipes

  • In order to monitor the developmental features of embryos, larvae, and juveniles of Oryzias latipes (Temminck and Schlegel), Oryzias latipes was caught in river of Shinduck-dong, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do, on May 2011, and experiments were carried out in Ichthyology laboratory at Chonnam National University. The blastodisc step was the first level for natural spawning. The optic vesicle, Kupffer's vesicle, myotome began to appear 75 hours 57 minutes later. After blastodisc development, the pectoral fins were made at 143 hours 37 minutes and the tail was separated started at the same time. Hatching was observed at 167 hours 27 minutes after blastodisc. The total length of the hatched larvae was 4.95~5.10 mm (mean, 5.01 mm), the mouth and anus were opened. Larvae used yolk completely after 3 days after hatching. The total length larvae was 5.45~5.56 mm (mean, 5.52 mm) after 8 days after hatching, and appeared the stems for tail. The stems pectoral, anal fin were showed after 14 days and the stems dorsal, ventral fin were appeared after 19 days. For 35 days after hatching, the total length of larvae 13.95~15.30 mm (mean, 14.64 mm), and at this time, fins and body were transferred like the adult Oryzias latipes.

Comparison of elective inguinal node irradiation techniques in anal cancer

  • Purpose: To compare photon thunderbird with deep match (technique 1) with 3-field technique with electron inguinal boost (technique 2) in acute skin toxicity, toxicity-related treatment breaks and patterns of failure in elective inguinal radiation therapy (RT) for curative chemoradiation in anal cancer. Materials and Methods: Seventeen patients treated between January 2008 and September 2010 without evidence of inguinal and distant metastasis were retrospectively reviewed. In 9 patients with technique 1, dose to inguinal and whole pelvis area was 41.4 to 45 Gy and total dose was 59.4 Gy. In 8 patients with technique 2, doses to inguinal, whole pelvis, gross tumor were 36 to 41.4 Gy, 36 to 41.4 Gy, and 45 to 54 Gy, respectively. The median follow-up period was 27.6 and 14.8 months in group technique 1 and 2, respectively. Results: The incidences of grade 3 radiation dermatitis were 56% (5 patients) and 50% (4 patients), dose ranges grade 3 dermatitis appeared were 41.4 to 50.4 Gy and 45 to 54 Gy in group technique 1 and 2, respectively (p = 0.819). The areas affected by grade 3 dermatitis in 2 groups were as follow: perianal and perineal areas in 40% and 25%, perianal and inguinal areas in 0% and 50%, and perianal area only in 60% and 25%, respectively (p = 0.196). No inguinal failure has been observed. Conclusion: Photon thunderbird with deep match technique and 3-field technique with electron inguinal boost showed similar incidence of radiation dermatitis. However, photon thunderbird with deep match seems to increase the possibility of severe perineal dermatitis.

Surgical Correction of Congenital Type IV Atresia Ani with a URethrorectal Fistula in a Dog (개의 선천성 제4형 항문폐쇄증과 요도직장루의 외과 교정술)

  • A 4-week-old 0.5 kg male Shih Tzu with history of congenital abnormality, abnormality, was referred to Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Chungbuk National University for further evaluation and treatment. During physical examination, the dog revealed mild depression and dyschezia. In plain radiographs, a digital thermometer put in the anus and grasped blind end of the rectum. In contrast radiographs, a urethrorectal fistula was confirmed. Urine specimens were collected with cystocentesis. Bacteria of the urine were detected using an auto microorganism analyzer. According to history taking, physical examination, radiographic signs and urinalysis, it was diagnosed as type IV atresia ani with a urethrorectal fistula. The dog was treated by fistulectomy and anoplasty, and discharged with instruction. Three days after operation, mild dehiscence was appeared. Wound was left to heal by second intention. During the follow-up of eight weeks, wound showed it to be healed and defecation was normal.

Surgical Correction of Congenital Type III Atresia ani with Rectovaginal Fistula in a Cat (고양이의 직장질루가 병발한 Type III 선천성 항문무형성증의 수술적 교정)

  • A four-week-old female Scottish Fold cat weighting 0.6 kg was admitted for vaccination. During the physical examination, the liquid feces were observed from the vulva and the anus was imperforate. The location of a narrow fistula and distended colon were identified on the contrast radiography. Definitive diagnosis was made as type III atresia ani with rectovaginal fistula. Anal reconstruction and ligation of the fistula were successfully undertaken to treat atresia ani. After surgery, the cat was treated with lactulose and a special diet consisting of high fiber was fed to increase digestibility. The cat was able to control defecation after 2 weeks post-operation. There was no complication for 8 months after surgery.

  • A new disease causing mass mortality of farmed snakehead (Channa arga) has emerged in Korea over the summer of 2005. The affected fish showed no specific external signs with the exception of a distended abdomen and hemorrhaging around the anus. After opening the abdomen, the visceral organs, liver, spleen and kidney, present numerous white nodular structures. Histopathological examination revealed these nodules to be evidence of granulomas in the visceral organs. A Gram-positive, filamentous bacterium was isolated from all of the affected fish. Development of primers for a genus-specific peR assay for Nocardia, following analysis of the sequences of the complete 16S rRNA genes from Nocardia spp. and non-Nocardia bacterial genes, allowed identification of the causative organism as Nocardia. This is the first report of a nocardial infection of fish in Korea.

Infection Route of Scuticociliates in the Juvenile of the Cultured Flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus (양식넙치, Paralichthys olivaceus 치어의 스쿠티카충 감염경로)

  • The infection characteristics with scuticociliates at on-land rearing farms and hatcheries of flounder, Paralithys olivaceus was investigated during the year of 2001 by juvenile infection routes. When culture tanks for living food organisms such as chlorella, rotifer, and Artemia were searched, scuticocilates were detected both in live and dead rotifer, and at the dregs of culture tank bottoms at almost hatcheries. When rotifer infected with scuticocilates fed on fish larvae, lots of scuticocilate were inhabited at the bottom of fry rearing tanks. After feeding on scuticocilates-infected rotifer on fish larvae, first infection was detected at 10 days after bottom dwelling or 40 days old after hatching. By histopathological examination we confirmed the infection route of eyeball or brain contamination was that the ciliate worms digged through mouth and front part of the dosal fin cuticle, transferred into eyeball along the epithelium and muscle tissue, and reached finally into brain by the muscle and nerve tissue. The infection of internal organs was clarified into two routes. The first route was started from the infection at ventral and anal fin rays by the worms, and reached at the anus and rectum through the epithelium and muscle tissue. The second route was initiated from the infection at urinary organ and reached into the rectum epithelium cells, inner wall of intestine, abdominal cavity, pancreas, kidney, and pancreas. At seed production farms where fish larvae fed on scuticocilate-free rotifer, the worms were not detected not only at the food organisms culture tanks and juvenile rearing tanks but also larval flounder less than 7cm in total length.

A Systematic Review on Drug Safety for Molsidomine, Nicorandil and Trimetazidine (Molsidomine, Nicorandil, Trimetazidine의 안전성 관련 체계적 고찰)

  • Background: Ischemic heart disease is the most common type of heart disease and an important cause of death in Korea. Among marketed anti-anginal medications, molsidomine, nicorandil, and trimetazidine are approved in Korea with unique mechanism of actions. As these drugs are not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, the access to the up-to-dated and comprehensive safety-related information has been less than optimal from drug information resources used by Korean pharmacists. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using Embase and Korean manuscripts to compile safety updates for these medications. Out of 418 articles from keyword searches, 52 studies were reviewed in full to compare adverse effects (AEs) with the approved package inserts (PI). Results: Molsidomine related adverse effects were mostly mild or moderate, but anxiety, palpitation, epigastric pain, and sexual potency reduction were additional AEs found from the review not listed in PI. Although PI has included ulceration in oral cavity and gastrointestinal tracts including anus by nicorandil, the Korea FDA recently recommended adding corneal, genital, and skin ulcers to the approved PI. Trimetazidine induced Parkinsonism, worsening of the symptoms for patients diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, gastrointestinal burning, and muscle cramps were additionally identified AEs not listed in PI for trimetazidine. Conclusion: Continuous evaluations of the safety profile of these agents are needed to balance the risks and benefits to provide evidence-based safety counseling to the patients. In addition, more focused efforts on spontaneous reporting are warranted by healthcare professionals to safeguard patients against AEs.

Influence of Military Service Experience on Sexual Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behavior of Male College Students (병역필 여부에 따른 남자 대학생의 성지식, 성태도 및 성행동에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the difference of sexual knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of college students who fulfilled military service and those who did not, for providing basic data for developing nursing interventions for the college students. Methods: This study used a descriptive research design. The subjects of this study were 3,741 male college students. Data were collected through personal interviews using questionnaires from November to December 2007. The sexual knowledge, attitudes, and behavior measurement tool was used. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test and chi-square test. Results: The major findings of this study were as follows: 1) There was a statistically significant difference in sexual knowledge of contraception / abortion(p = .002, t = 3.16), venereal disease(p = .006, t = .2.73), sexual attitude of sexual behavior(p = .002; t = 3.13) and sexual double think(p = .047, t = 1.98) according to military service 2) There was a statistically significant difference in sexual behavior experience frequency of 9 items(friendship with opposite sex, kiss / embracing, petting, porno magazine / porno video contact, masturbation, sexual intercourse via anus, sexual intercourse via mouth, cause pregnancy, cause abortion: p < .000, $x^2$ = 39.47; p < .000, $x^2$ = 55.88; p < .000, $x^2$ = 46.76; p = .034, $x^2$ = 6.77; p = .017, $x^2$ = 12.05; p = .003, $x^2$ = 14.24; p < .000, $x^2$ = 47.70; p < .000, $x^2$ = 23.86; p < .000, $x^2$ = 21.84) respectively according to military service. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that sexual knowledge, attitudes and behavior differ before and after the experience of military service, so further study for detecting military sex culture character effecting difference in sex knowledge, attitudes and behavior is needed.

Anal Papanicolaou Smear in Women with Abnormal Cytology: a Thai Hospital Experience

  • Background: Anal intraepithelial lesions (AIL) are likely to represent a precursor for anal cancer. Women infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may be at higher risk of anal cancer but a screening program for AIL still is not routinely recommended. We here studied the relationship of dysplastic cells from cervical and anal cytology in HIV-infected women. Materials and Methods: This prospective study was conducted in Prapokklao Hospital, Thailand during 2013-2014. Five hundred and ninety nine HIV-infected women were recruited. Participants who had cytological reports of equally or over "abnormal squamous/glandular cells of undetermined significance" (ASC-US) were classified as abnormal cervical or anal cytology. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis were used to evaluate correlations between groups. Results: HIV-infected women with abnormal cervical cytology had 3.8 times more risk (adjusted odd ratio 3.846, 95% confidence interval 1.247-11.862, p-value. 019) for abnormal anal cytology. The major problem of the anal Pap test in this study was the inadequacy of the collected specimens for evaluation (34.4%, 206/599). Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy of cervical and anal Pap tests were 93.9/12.0, 87.3/96.9, 39.7/21.4, 99.4/94.1 and 88.1/91.4 percent, respectively. Conclusions: Abnormal cervical cytology in HIV-infected women indicates elevated risk for abnormal anal cytology. The sensitivity of the anal Pap test for detection of AIL 2/3 in HIV-infected women was quite low while specificity was excellent. Inadequacy of specimen collection for evaluation was a major limitation. Improvement of sample collection is recommended for future investigations.

Morphological Development and Reproductive Behavior of Hedgehog Seahorse Hippocampus spinosissimus (Teleostei: Syngnathidae) (Hedgehog Seahorse (Hippocampus spinosissimus)의 산출습성 및 형태발달)

  • This study described the reproductive behavior and the morphological development of the larvae and juvenile of the hedgehog seahorse (Hippocampus spinosissimus). Larvae released from male seahorse were reared for 30 days in the laboratory. At the birth, the small flap-like mouth and anus of the yolk-sac larvae were open, and the yolk was completely absorbed within 1 day. The size of newborn larvae ranged 7.01-13.19mm (mean $9.26\pm1.9mm$, n=9) in TL (total length). The larvae had 15-16 pectoral fin rays and 19 dorsal fin rays, but 4 anal fin rays were not completely developed. The larval size ranged 13.38-14.38 mm (mean $13.96\pm0.3mm$, n=6) in TL at 1 day after release, and they had 17 pectoral fin rays, 20 dorsal fin rays and 4 anal fin rays when the larvae reached the juvenile stage. Juvenile size ranged 14.98-16.42mm (mean $15.84\pm0.5mm$, n=5) in TL at 3 days after release, and 1, 4, 6, 8 trunk spines extended quickly. Terminal part of the coronet became a four-forked wedge shape concurrently. Juvenile became 23.25mm (n=l) in TL after 15 days and all 11 trunk rings was connected completely. After 20 days, the juveniles were 24.66-28.65mm (mean $27.26\pm1.6mm$, n=5) in TL, and many melanophores appeared in integument. In the eye lenses, 5-6 lusters were formed. After 30 days, the juveniles were 26.78-28.26 mm (mean $27.36\pm0mm$, n=4)in TL and 8-9 lusters appeared on the eye lenses. Coronet terminal part developed to a five-forked crown-shape completely.
