Silver nanoparticles have marked antimicrobial effects on several pathogens and have been used to control bacterial growth in humans. In the present study, we evaluated the antimicrobial efficacy of silver nanoparticles against the common causative pathogens of canine otitis external through counting of colony forming units. Silver nanoparticles showed significant dose-dependent antimicrobial effects on pathogens. In addition, we conducted antimicrobial susceptibility tests and compared the antimicrobial efficacy of silver nanoparticles. Microorganisms with a high resistance to antibiotics were also resistant silver nanoparticle with low concentration ($5{\mu}g/mL$). However, in high concentration ($15{\mu}g/mL$), almost 100% reduction in the number of CFUs of these pathogens was observed.
We examined the antimicrobial effects of the cotton fabrics which were laundered at different conditions and treated with a colloidal silver solution using Staphylococcus aureus. Colloidal silver solution was made from commercial colloidal silver generator by electrolysis. The fabric which was innoculated and washed with water before drying had no more Staphylococcus aureus, but which was innoculated and dried before washing with detergent solution had lower reduction rate. The fabric washed with oxygen bleach did not have an antimicrobial effect, but rinsed with 0.07% fabric softener showed antimicrobial properties. The fabric rinsed with 0.7ppm colloidal silver solution had better antimicrobial effects. As the treating concentration of silver solution increased, the antimicrobial property of the fabric was increased. The fabric treated with 5% silver solution sustained reflectance and whiteness of untreated fabric. The colloidal silver treated fabric lost antimicrobial property after washing because nano-sized silver particles were located on uneven fiber surface without chemical bonding forces.

Conclusion : From this study, we could suggest that Pogostemonis Herba, Ammomi Tsao-ko Fructus, Alpiniae Katsumadaii Semen, Magnoliae Cortex of medicinals resolving dampness with aroma are available to antimicrobial agent of pathogenic vaginal microorganisms in vitro.
This experiment was performed to investigate effects of boiled-water extract of artemisia on the important oral microflora, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans, and to examine the difference of antimicrobial effects according to concentration of extract. The bacteria was cultured in broth media containing 0.1%, 0.5%, 1.0% of artemisia extract, and sterile distilled water respectively. After harvesting the culture, the genomic DNA of each aliquot was extracted and DNA concentration was relatively compared by means of agarose gel electrophoresis. As a result, we found out that the boiled-water extract of artemisia had significant antimicrobial effects on Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans and its antimicrobial effects was increased in proportion to its concentration.
It has been shown that the butanol extract of Lonicera japonica has antimicrobial and other potentially useful biological activities. The purpose of this study was to determine the in vitro activity of Lonicera japonica compared to other antimicrobial agents against anaerobic bacteria. Specifically, the in vitro activity of the butanol extract was investigated against 104 clinical isolates of anaerobic bacteria using an agar dilution method and the results were compared to erythromycin, cefoxitin, imipenem, clindamycin, and metronidazole. It was found that Lonicera japonica and imipenem were the most active antimicrobial agents tested.
Purpose : This study was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial effects of Astringent medicinals against vaginal microbe. Methods : Staphylococcus aureus, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans and Gardnerella vaginalis were used for vaginitis-induced microbe. Lactobacillus gasseri, Streptococcus spp. and Escherichia coli HB101 were used for normal vaginal florae. And Astringent medicinals (Rubi Fructus, Tritici Immatri Semen, Corni Fructus, Nelumbinis Semen, Mume Fructus, Schizandrae Fructus, Ailanthi Radicis Cortex, Galla Rhois, Myristicae Semen, Terminariae Fructus, Rosae laevigatae Fructus, Ephedrae Radix) were used in this study. Antimicrobial activities were tested by optical density and colony test in vitro. And then wee valuated the antimicrobial effects in comparison with optical density and colony test. Results : The optical density and colony test showed that Terminariae Fructus and Galla Rhois among Astringent medicinals had the antimicrobial effects. Teminariae Fructus had the antimicrobial susceptibility and selective toxicity against Candida albicans and Gardnerella vaginalis of vaginitis-induced microbe. Galla Rhois had the antimicrobial susceptibility and selective toxicity against Staphylococus aureus, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococus aureus, Candida albicans and Gardnerella vaginalis of vaginitis-induced microbe. Conclusion : According to these results, we can suggest that Terminariae Fructus and Galla Rhois among Astringent medicinals be available to the antimicrobial agent of vaginitis-induced microbe in vitro.
Antimicrobial studies on reproductive organs have been scarcely reported. Candida albicans and Neisseria gonorrhoea test to find out the natural substances of various concentrations in the antimicrobial experiments have been made. Antimicrobial effect of biopole as the natural compound biosynthesis matter that contain anti-inflammatory material, catechin polyphenols and lactic acid as a single natural substance on C. albicans were of great significance. Also the results of antimicrobial effects of biopole, catechin and lactic acid as a single natural substance on N. gonorrhoea, respectively, showed lower concentration than those of the antimicrobial effects on C. albicans. Through the survival of Lactobacillus acidofillus that acts for the protection of the genital tissue the importance of lactic acid was confirmed. Lactobacillus acidofillus protection and C. albicans firmly into disinfected to low concentrations of the natural mixture from biopole and catechin with lactic acid were found and the antimicrobial effects of this natural mixture on N. gonorrhoea were perfect. C. albicans and N. gonorrhoea to disinfect the optimal natural mixture from 2% concentration biopole, 0.2% concentration of catechin and 2% lactic acid were obtained. Through the survival of Lactobacillus acidofillus in the reproductive organs protectable effects were acquired to prevent the infections of reproductive tissue and the recurrence.
The antimicrobial effects of silver (Ag) ion or salts are well known. Recently, silver nanoparticle is attracting an interest in a wide variety of fields since it has been known to be safe and effective as an antimicrobial agent against a broad spectrum of microorganisms. Although silver nanoparticle has been applied to various kinds of products owing to its potent antimicrobial activity, the effects of silver nanoparticle on microorganisms and antimicrobial mechanism have not been revealed clearly. In this paper, we summarized the characteristics, antimicrobial activities and mechanisms, cytotoxicity and applicability of silver nanoparticle.
The oral microbiota such as P. gingivalis, P. intermedia and A. actinomycetemcomitans play a primary role in the initiation and progression of the periodontal disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial effects and inhibitory effects of honokiol and magnolol on the bacterial collagenase activity, cytotoxicity and cytokine production of periodontopathic microorganisms. The antimicrobial activities of honokiol and magnolol was evaluted with minimum inhibition concentration. Honokiol was more active than magnolol, but less than chlorhexidine on antimicrobial activity. The inhibitory effects of magnolol and honokiol on the collagenolytic activity and cytotoxicity were evaluated using a Collagenokit CLN-100 and rapid colorimetric assay (MTT method) for cellular growth and survival of gingival fibroblast and periodontalligament cell and $[^3H]-thymidine$ incorporation for the gingival epithelial cell. The inhibitory effects on the collagenolytic activity was the highest in chlorhexidine, and the lowest in magnolol. Magnolol had the lowest cytotoxic effect and chlorhexidine had the highest. The inhibitory effects on cytokine production was evaluated using $interleukin-1{\beta}$ ELISA kit (Cistron Biotech.), IL-6, $TNF-{\alpha}$ ELISA kit (Genzyme) and inhibitory effects were higher than bacterial LPS and there is no difference among the honokiol, magnolol and chlorhexidine. From these results, the antimicrobial and antienzymatic activities of honokiol and magnolol were seemed to inhibit bacterial growth and enzyme activities with lesser cytotoxic activities. Therefore, it was suggested that honokiol and magnolol are very effective antimicrobial agents on periodontal pathogens.
Bifidobacterium strains can provide several health benefits, such as antimicrobial and immunomodulatory effects. Some strains inhibit growth or cell adhesion of pathogenic bacteria, including multidrug-resistant bacteria, and their antibacterial activity can be intensified when combined with certain antibiotics. In addition, some strains of bifidobacteria reduce viral infectivity, leading to less epithelial damage of intestinal tissue, lowering the virus shedding titer, and controlling the release of antiviral substances. Furthermore, bifidobacteria can modulate the immune system by increasing immunoglobulins, and inducing or reducing pro- or anti-inflammatory cytokines, respectively. In particular, these anti-inflammatory effects are helpful in the treatment of patients who are already suffering from infection or inflammatory diseases. This review summarizes the antimicrobial effects and mechanisms, and immunomodulatory effects of Bifidobacterium strains, suggesting the potential of bifidobacteria as an alternative or complementary treatment option.
