Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystal from Bent-Core Molecule with Vinyl End Group

  • Three banana-shaped achiral compounds, 4-chloro-1,3-phenylene bis [4-{4-(undecenyloxy)phenyl imino-methyl} benzoate] derivatives, were synthesized with variation of a substituent (x=H, F, Cl); their antiferro-electric properties are described. The smectic mesophases, including a switchable chiral smectic C(Sm $C^{\ast}$) phase, were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, triangular wave method, and X-ray diffractometry. The presence of vinyl groups at the terminals of linear side wings in the banana-shaped achiral molecules induced a decrease in melting temperature and formation of the switchable Sm $C^{\ast}$ phase in the melt. The smectic phase having a lateral fluorine-substituent at 3-position of the Schiff's base moiety showed antiferroelctric switching, and the value of spontaneous polarization on reversal of an applied electric field was 250 nC/$cm^2$ .

  • PTO/PZO 초격자 박막은 박막 계면에 응력이 발생하여 기존의 박막처럼 size effect가 적용되지 않고 두께가 감소해도 높은 유전상수를 갖는다. Antiferroelectric PbZrO$_3$(PZO)와 ferroelectric PbTiO$_3$(PTO)를 적층 성장시킨 초격자는 400도에서 성장한 (100) Pt/SiO$_2$기판 위에 rf magnetron sputtering으로 증착하였다. PTO/PZO의 증착 주기는 30(PTO $_{4unti cells}$/PZO $_{4unti cells}$) 에서 1(PTO $_{125unti cells}$/PZO $_{125unti cells}$)까지 두께의 변화를 주어 준비했고 초격자 박막의 전체두께는 100nm로 고정시켰다. XRD결과, PTO/PZO는 주기에 따라 초격자의 특성인 main peak과 satellite peak을 관찰 할 수 있었다. 초격자의 주기가 감소함에 따라 2$\theta$값이 증가하고 평균 d 값이 감소되면서 PTO층에 뒤틀림이 증가하였다. PTO층의 뒤틀림 증가로 인해 superlattice의 주기가 증가함에 따라 초격자의 유전율이 증가하였고 강유전성이 향상되었다.향상되었다.

  • A pyroelectric ceramic material based on Pb(Sn1/2Sb1/2)O3 modified PZT system is studied as a function of the amount of Pb(Sn1/2Sb1/2)O3 and PbTiO3. With increasing the Pb(Sn1/2Sb1/2)O3 amount the dielectric constant increases up to 10mol% and then decreases, but the pyroelectric coefficient decreases and as the PbTiO3 contents increase in the 10mol% added PZT system, the dielectric constant increases but the infrared sensitivity decreases. The good pyroelectric material has low dielectric constant and no pyrochlore phase, but does not depend in the amount of remanent dipole, and its composition sites around ferroelectric-to-antiferroelectric phase boundary.

  • Electrically-induced strain and polarization studies of the (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbZrO3 crystalline solutions have been done. Dielectric constants with temperature were investigated for 0$\leq$x$\leq$0.95. With increasing PbZrO3 content the transition maxima were found to move to higher temperature region and DPT (Diffused Phase Transition) properties were decreased for x$\leq$0.60. Phase transition between ferroelectric states and antiferroelectric states was confirmed for 0.93$\times$10-3 for 0.4

  • Experimentally, the aligned direction of AFLCs in electro-optic cells having both the substrates rubbed along the same direction is skewed by a few degrees from the rebbing direction. To explain why, we proposed "Torsional Rigid Body Model" and interpreted their skewing angle as the action of short pitch with the large shear stress. That is, the azimuthal an anchoring strength (about 35 dyn/cm) in the cell is much larger than the maximum shear stress (about 10$^{-6}$ dyn/cm) for the original pitch and so forbids the optic axis to skew. On the side hand, the strength is smaller than the maximum shear stress (about 42 dyn/cm) for short pitch and then allows the optic axis to skew.

  • (111)-oriented and random oriented $Pb_{0.8}Ba_{0.2}ZrO_3$ (PBZ) perovskite relaxor ferroelectric thin films were fabricated on Pt(111)/$TiO_x$/$SiO_2$/Si substrate by sol-gel method. Nano-scaled antiferroelectric and ferroelectric two-phase coexisted in both (111)-oriented and random oriented PBZ thin film. High dielectric tunability (${\eta}=75%$, E = 560 kV/cm) and figure-of-merit (FOM ~ 236) at room temperature was obtained in (111)-oriented thin film. Meanwhile, giant electrocaloric effect (ECE) (${\Delta}T=45.3K$ and ${\Delta}S=46.9JK^{-1}kg^{-1}$ at $598kVcm^{-1}$) at room temperature (290 K), rather than at its Curie temperature (408 K), was observed in random oriented $Pb_{0.8}Ba_{0.2}ZrO_3$ (PBZ) thin film, which makes it a promising material for the application to cooling systems near room temperature. The giant ECE as well as high dielectric tunability are attributed to the coexistence of AFE and FE phases and field-induced nano-scaled AFE to FE phase transition.

  • We have studied dielectric properties in the smectic phases of 4-(6-ethoxy-1-trifluoromethyl-hexyloxycarbonyl)-phenyl-4-Nonyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylat ( TFMEOHPNBC ) having fluorine attached to one of its benzene rings. Homogeneous and homeotropic 1.5 and 5${\mu}m$ thick test cells were prepared to analyze molecular dynamic property. We measured capacitance as a function of temperature in the frequency range between 20 Hz and 100 kHz by using HP4284A LCR meter. We observed that the homogeneous cell has high dielectric constant causing dipole moment in smectic $C^{\ast}$ phase, but we can see the dipole moments are canceled out in antiferroelectric phase. It is found that there are two kind of the relaxation director fluctuation below 100 kHz. The first is ionic or space charge contribution below 10 Hz, and the second is Goldstone mode near 1-2 kHz. We will discuss molecular dynamics in smectic phase from extra information such as x-ray and electrooptic data.

  • Four banana-shaped compounds have beene synthesized introducing ester linking group into mesogenic unit, varying the central core with 1,6-, 1,7-, 2,3-, and 2,7-naphthylene units, and introducing the dodecyloxy group as the terminal flexible unit. All obtained compounds except one with 1,7-naphthylene unit were reversibly thermotropically liquid crystalline. The compound with 1,7-naphthylene unit could not form the mesophase due to its asymmetrical and sharp substitution angle. The compounds with 1,6- and 2,3-naphthylene units showed an antiferroelectric switchable smectic phase, which has been designated B2 phase. Interestingly, the compound with the 2,3-naphthylene unit showed the two mesophases of B2 and nematic phase.

  • $(Bi_{1/2}Na_{1/2})TiO_3$-based ceramics have been intensively studied as lead-free piezoelectric ceramics. In this study, the piezoelectric properties and phase transition behaviors of BNT based solid solution $(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})_{1-x}Ca_xTiO_3$ ($X=0.01{\sim}0.25$) were investigated. The morphotropic phase boundary(MPB) zone which BNT is transformed from rhombohedral to cubic structure was appeared by adding $CaTiO_3$ with 0.12 mol by the measurement of permittivity and X-ray diffraction. The behavior which ferroelectric BNT with adding $CaTiO_3$ was changed to antiferroelectric and paraelectric state was confirmed by the measurement ofhysterisis loop and depolarization temperature as a function of temperature. As $CaTiO_3$ concentration was increased, the phase transition temperature was decreased. The piezoelectric properties were highest at 0.01 mol of $CaTiO_3$ concentration. The electromechanical coupling factor($K_t$) and mechanical quality factor($Q_m$) were 42% and 254, respectively.
