Antibiotic resistance is a serious problem to food safety as well as human healthcare. To avoid this, there are several approaches for a new class of antibiotic agents that target only production of virulence factors such as biofilm without bacterial growth defect. The objective of this study was to investigate the antibiofilm activity of tuberostemonine in Staphylococcus aureus. Tuberostemonine significantly reduced the biofilm formation (26.07-47.02%) in the crystal violet assay whereas there were no effect on S. aureus growth. The dispersion in preformed biofilm was also observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Quantification real-time PCR revealed that the icaA and agrA expression having an important role in biofilm production of S. aureus were strongly affected with tuberostemonine. These results suggest that tuberostemonine has potential for controlling biofilm formation and dispersion by effect on virulence regulation of S. aureus.

A 3-year-old Thoroughbred gelding presented with left laryngeal hemiplegia with a history of laryngoplasty (tie-back surgery) failure. Postoperative endoscopy revealed no abduction or no inflammatory changes in the left arytenoid cartilage. The owner opted for the horse to undergo partial arytenoidectomy due to failed laryngoplasty. A tracheostomy tube was intubated through a mid-cervical tracheotomy to secure the airway under general anesthesia, and; laryngotomy was performed to access the arytenoid cartilage in dorsal recumbency. A partial arytenoidectomy was performed with endoscopic assistance through the left nostril, and the left arytenoid cartilage was removed, excluding the muscular process. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory agents were administered postoperatively, and the incision site was cleaned using normal saline and antibiotic ointment twice daily. On the 12th postoperative day, endoscopy revealed redundant corniculate process mucosa at the surgical site, which was removed using rongeur forceps directly through the previous laryngotomy incision. The horse showed no significant complications during the hospitalization. Two months after surgery, the surgical site reportedly recovered with no evidence of granulation tissue. The horse returned to training and racing 3 and 7 months postoperatively, respectively. This is the first case report of a partial arytenoidectomy in a horse in South Korea. In this case, the horse returned to training after partial arytenoidectomy without significant complications, indicating that partial arytenoidectomy could be beneficial for failed laryngoplasty.

Objective : Stroke patients tend to take antibiotics due to infection resulting from complication. One of many side effects from using antibiotics is diarrhea, which infact causes anaerobic organism dysfunction resulting Pseudo-Membranous Colitis (P.M.C). To treat P.M.C, antibiotics and antibacterial agents are usually used. But they may cause other side effects, therefore extreme caution must be taken. Methods : We treated an antibiotic induced P.M.C patient who diagnosed by sigmoid scopy with only Yijoong-tang (Lizhong-tang) without antibiotics and observed patients stool aspects. Results and Conclusion : Patiensts symptom was improved after 7days, and we can see the improvement by follow-up sigmoid scopy. This case may give us a possibility of that oriental medical treatments as complementary and alternative medicine to standard antibiotic treatment.

Development of novel antibacterial agents is imperative due to the increasing threat of antibiotic-resistant pathogens. This study aimed to develop the enhanced antibacterial activity and in-vivo efficacy of a novel truncated endolysin, CHAPSAP26-161, derived from the endolysin LysSAP26, against multidrug-resistant bacteria. CHAPSAP26-161 exhibited higher protein purification efficiency in E. coli and antibacterial activity than LysSAP26. Moreover, CHAPSAP26-161 showed the higher lytic activity against A. baumannii with minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) of 5-10 ㎍/ml, followed by Staphylococcus aureus with MBCs of 10-25 ㎍/ml. Interestingly, CHAPSAP26-161 could lyse anaerobic bacteria, such as Clostridioides difficile, with MBCs of 25-50 ㎍/ml. At pH 4-8 and temperatures of 4℃-45℃, CHAPSAP26-161 maintained antibacterial activity without remarkable difference. The lytic activity of CHAPSAP26-161 was increased with Zn2+. In vivo tests demonstrated the therapeutic effects of CHAPSAP26-161 in murine systemic A. baumannii infection model. In conclusion, CHAPSAP26-161, a truncated endolysin that retains only the CHAP domain from LysSAP26, demonstrated enhanced protein purification efficiency and antibacterial activity compared to LysSAP26. It further displayed broad-spectrum antibacterial effects against S. aureus, A. baumannii, and C. difficile. Our in vitro and in-vivo results of CHAPSAP26-161 highlights its promise as an innovative therapeutic option against those bacteria with multiple antibiotic resistance.
This study has been carried out for investigating the relatedness of representative 135 Shigella sonnei strains isolated from 2000 to 2004 by using biotyping and antimicrobial resistance. All strains showed typical biochemical characterisics of Shigella strain. Among 135 strains,79 (58.5%) strains were biotype "g",54 (40.0%) strains were biotype "a" and 2 (1.5%) strains were biotype "e". The results of susceptibility test against 16 antimicrobial agents were like this. Most of strains were susceptible to AN, CIP, C and GM. 129 (95.6%) strains were resistant to SXT, 126 (93.3%) strains were resistant to TE and 122 (90.4%) strains were resistant to SM. One hundred thirty two (97.8%) strains were resistant to more than two antimicrobial agents. R28 type (antimicrobial resistance patterns 28: resistant to AM, SAM, TE, TIC, SXT, K, SM and AmC) were 42 strains (31.1%). The other strains were showed 33 kinds of R patterns. The results of $bla_{TEM}$, sulII, tetA and strA gene detection were coincided with phenotype of antimicrobial resistance by disk diffusion method. But some strains which had sulII and strA genes were not showed the resistance against SXT and SM.

Objectives: This study investigated the levels and components of floor-settled dust in two elementary schools located at different sites (one near the Shihwa industrial complex and the other in a rural area) in order to evaluate the amounts of trace metal elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) and microorganisms. Methods: Over twenty settled-dust samples were collected from the two elementary schools. Trace metal elements were extracted from the dust using hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, and the amounts were measured by ICP-OES. Microbiological analysis was performed by bacterial culturing using R2A medium and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Results: The results showed that the amounts of three metal elements (Cr, Pb, and Zn) were significantly different between the schools (${\alpha}$=0.05, p<0.04). In addition, microbial communities in each school were highly correlated with one another. Among the identified microorganisms, a number of potentially opportunistic microorganisms, including antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as Acinetobacter baumannii, were found. Conclusions: This study will provide preliminary data for assessing levels and types of chemical and microbiological agents in elementary schools and for further evaluating human health risks associated with the agents.

Since fire blight disease on apple and pear was produced in Korea in 2015, there were no registered chemicals to control against this disease. Instead, several antibacterial chemicals that were registered for other bacterial diseases such as soft rot and bacterial spot have been authorized by Rural Development Administration (RDA). However, these chemicals are not tested efficacy for fire blight disease except damage by those treatments on apple and pear in Korea. Thus, we evaluated efficiency using in vitro and in planta assays of antibacterial chemicals such as antibiotics and copper compounds including kasugamycin, oxytetracycline, oxolinic acid and streptomycin, and copper hydroxide, copper sulfate, oxine copper and tribasic copper sulfate, respectively. We also tested two kinds of biological agents. As expected, significant antibacterial effect was observed in vitro test of both antibiotics and copper-based chemicals. In planta test based on disease severity including ooze and water-soaked formation on immature pears, bacterial populations on blooms, and blight lesion formation in artificially inoculated shoots, kasugamycin, oxytetracycline and streptomycin have been shown the most efficiency among tested antibiotics. Four copper-based chemicals tested in this study, control effects are little bit lower than agricultural antibiotics but they seem to be available to use in terms of winter season. Biocontrol agents were also shown possibility to treat in eco-friendly farms. In addition, there are no antibiotic resistance genes in Korean isolates against antibiotics, which were selected for suppression of fire blight in this study.

Purpose: This study investigated the factors affecting the use of empirical antibiotics in febrile infants from 1 month to less than 3 months. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of hospitalized previously healthy infants with fever in Pusan National University Children's Hospital from January 2010 to December 2016. Clinical features, laboratory findings and antibiotic therapy were analyzed. Respiratory viruses were identified by multiplex reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and were reported after 1-3 days. Enterovirus were identified by real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and were reported in several hours. Results: The 129 of 366 subjects used empirical antibiotics and 237 patients didn't used empirical antibiotics. Empirical antibiotics were used more frequently when the fever was longer before admission, respiratory symptoms and ill being appearances were present and C-reactive protein was elevated. The rate of readmission was low in the group not used empirical antibiotics. Most of the patients detected by enterovirus PCR in cerebrospinal fluid didn't used empirical antibiotics. The results of respiratory virus multiplex RT-PCR showed no difference in the use of empirical antibiotics. Conclusions: In our study, empirical antibiotic prescriptions were affected not respiratory virus multiplex RT-PCR but enterovirus PCR. If multiplex RT-PCR were reported more rapid turn around time, it will affect antibiotic use.
Nitric oxide (NO), which has been recognized as an integral molecule in maintaining homeostasis, plays an important role in host defense against microbes. NO has diverse antimicrobial mechanisms by directly and/or indirectly interacting with microbes. Under the circumstance that there is an urgent need for a new class of antimicrobial agents due to antibiotic resistance, much effort has been made to develop a NO-based antimicrobial agent. In order to make it possible, strategies to store and release NO in a controlled manner are required because NO has a gaseous property and a very short half-life. In this review, we described NO biochemistry and its mechanisms of antimicrobial activity. In additions, we introduced various NO-releasing systems that improve NO's antimicrobial activity.

Objective : Radiodermatitis is a common sequelae in 95% of patients receiving radiation therapy, which is important to be well managed as it can affect the patient's quality of life as well as the cancer treatment schedule. The aim of this study is to review and summarize the interventions available for the treatment of acute radiodermatitis, including traditional Korean medicine, and to propose treatment algorithms for clinicians. Methods : To collect studies about managements for radiodermatitis, domestic and foreign database were used such as Korean journal of traditional knowledge portal (KTKP), Korean studies information service system (KISS), national discovery or science leaders (NDSL), and oriental medicine advance searching integrated system (OASIS), Pubmed, Google scholar and Scopus. Results : Thirty-two studies were selected. There were nine studies on usual care and dressing, eleven studies on chemical agents, two studies on biological preparations, and ten studies on herbal medicines. Conclusion : Hygienic options and dressings have proved to be useful in the management of radiodermatitis. Chemical agents such as corticosteroid, statin, and topical antibiotic agent have proved to alleviate symptoms and severity, regenerate damaged skin, and prevent secondary infection. In biological preparations, EGF (epidermal growth factor) and GM-CSF (granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor) could be used to protect skin and prevent radiodermatitis. For herbal medicines, Calendula, catechin, β-sitosterol, and Jaungo (紫雲膏) may be effective for symptoms including pain, itching, and burning sensation induced by radiation therapy. Because of some research with conflicting results, further studies are needed to propose an algorithm for more optimal treatments.
