  • This study was conducted to investigate days after anthesis (DAA) and fruit after-ripening period (FAP) for seed-harvesting of high quality watermelon seeds. Fruit weight and number of seed per fruit increased according to DAA, while those did not significant about FAP. Ratio of cotyledon at whole seed was higher about 2 to 4% compared to seed coat irrespective of DAA and FAP. Germinability of watermelon was not a significant effect by DAA, however, it had differences by FAP. Percent of germination (PB) was below 50%, when 30 days maturated fruits after anthesis was omitted ripening, while PB was increased to 92% by ripening. In addition, seeds at DAA 40 and FAP 20 were higher general seedling vigors (hypocotyl length, diameter etc.) in BP test. Results indicated that considering seed productivity, it had maximized seed viability at DAA 40 and FAP 20.

  • In order to examine the effect of growth regulators on flower bud formation and anthesis, various growth regulators were applied during the initiation and growthstages of flower bud development in Camellia. The inhibitor CCC increased flowerbud formation. But gibberellin had a strong suppressing effect of flower budformation while it stimulated elongatien of shoots. On the other hand, gibberellinpromoted the growth of flower buds and hastened anthesis, while other growthregulators had no effect.

  • This study was carried out in the Chungnam National University grassland experimental field from October, 2007 to December, 2009 in order to find out the growth characteristics, seasonal anthesis distribution and botanical composition of the wildflowers which were altogether composed of 70% sheep fescue and 30% wildflowers. The experimental wildflower species contained 30 species in total to which sheep fescue (fundamental turfgrass), 8 native wildflowers, and 22 introduced wildflowers belonged. At the time of the anthesis of the wildflowers, the average length was 28.3 cm one year later and 34.5 cm two years later. They bloomed out into eight colors, but into simplified two colors during August, September, and October. The blooming season leant toward May and June and from August there was lots of difficulty in the wildflower blooming and the maintenance of their consistency. Especially, at the age of two (2009), the annual wildflowers after wintering were reduced but on account of domestic wildflowers the color, seasonal distribution, and consistency showed improved compared with those of one-year-old wildflowers. The annual ration of wildflowers, sheep fescue, and weed came to 25%, 61%, and 14% each one year later (2008) and 24%, 62%, and 14% each two years later (2009). Based on this result, cultivating wildflower grassland in the combination of native wildflowers and introduced wildflowers is estimated to be the proper method in the aspect of interaction.

  • The examination to find out how the activity of glutamine synthetase (GSA) develop in each wheat leaves during the growth period was carried out. GSA/g FW/leaf were very low at leaf differentiation stage and increased highly several times by unfolding and development of leaf, and declined deeply with the advance of senescence in each leaves. GSA/g FW/leaf were risen gradually from the every lower leaves to the every upper leaves, in consequence activity level and maximum peak per g fresh weight of 7th-flag leaves were two or three times higher than those at the 1st-4th leaves in all of 12 applied nitrogen treatments, thereupon. the highest activities per g fresh weight showed in the 8th leaves. GSA/g FW/leaf was shown two peaks in the 6th-flag leaves and one peak in 1st-4th leaves, respectively. GSA/g FW/leaf (except for senescence leaves) and GSA/plant were increased gradually to the infloresscence emerging stage and were shown the first maximum peak at 13 days before anthesis, then were declined rapidly. to the milk ripe stage (7 days after anthesis). and were shown the second maximum peak at the early dough ripe stage (22 days after anthesis) .

  • Large and small seeds (44 and 22 mg per caryopsis) of a spring wheat (cv. Kulin) and a spring barley (cv. Skiff) were sown at two nitrogen rates (equivalent to 10 and 32 g m$^{-2}$ ) in well-watered pots under outdoor conditions to determine the effects of seed size and nitrogen (N) nutrition on water use efficiency (WUE) and carbon isotope discrimination ($\Delta$) and to evaluate interaction among $\Delta$, WUE and N nutrition in wheat and barley. Barley produced, on average, 105% more biomass (root+shoot dry weight) than wheat at stem elongation because of early vigor. By anthesis this difference had disappeared as wheat had 16% more biomass than barley which headed 3 days earlier. Compared to plants grown from small seed, plants grown from large seed had much greater biomass in wheat than in barley at stem elongation and anthesis. Higher N nutrition increased average biomass of wheat and barley by 40 and 31%, respectively, at anthesis. Barley had 35 and 20% greater WUE (biomass gained/transpiration) than wheat at stem elongation and anthesis, respectively, and 2.0 to 3.6% lower $\Delta$ in aboveground shoots depending on growth stages and plant parts than wheat which had a greater stomatal conductance than barley. Seed size had a variable effect on WUE and did not affected $\Delta$ values. Water use efficiency was not affected by N rate at stem elongation in wheat and barley whereas WUE was increased 2 and 7%, respectively, in wheat and barley at anthesis with increasing N from 10 to 32 g m$^{-2}$ . High N plants had about 2.5% lower $\Delta$ values regardless of growth stages than low N plants across species and seed sizes. Carbon isotope discrimination was negatively correlated with WUE at anthesis but not at stem elongation.

  • This study was conducted to screen genetic stock for resistant to pod shedding. Materials used were 7 recommended varieties in Korea and 211 introduced varieties containing 94 Virginia type, 99 Spanish type and 18 Valencia type varieties. the days from seeding to first anthesis. number of mature pods per plant. 100 seeds weight and shedded pod ratio per total mature pod at harvesting were investigated. And the breaking tensile strength required to detach a pod from its gynophore was measured at a proper time for harvesting of each variety. In addition. factors related to pod shedding were discussed. The first anthesis of Spanish and Valencia types were earlier than that of Virginia type, but Korean recommended varieties which were recognized as Virginia type had relatively earlier anthesis. The varieties of Spanish type yielded more pods compared with those of Valencia and Virginia types. but Korean recom-mended varieties yielded slightly more pods than the others. Seeds weight of Korean recommended varieties was larger than not merely those of Spanish and Valencia types which were small seeds but also those of Virginia type which were large seeds. The breaking tensile strengths between pod and gynophore were various among the varieties belonging to same type. The strength was relatively strong in the Spanish type, but weak in both Virginia type and Korean recommended varieties. Therefore, pod shedding in the varieties of Spanish type was low and high in Virginia type and Korean recommended varieties. There were positive or negative correlations at the 0.1 % significan level among the days to first anthesis. number of pods per plant. seed weight, breaking tensile strength and shedding ratio. The pod shedding is considered a compound character that is affected by the factors such as breaking tensile strength between pod and gynophore, number of pods per plant and seed size.

  • Soil moisture shortage can reduce yield of waxy corn because maize is one of the sensitive crops to the drought stress. Farmers cannot irrigate due to limited water resource and irrigating facilities although applying water is the most effective practice to solve the drought problem. The study was conducted to investigate the pre-treatment effect of salicylic acid on reducing drought damage of waxy corn (Zea mays L.). Salicylic acid at concentration of 0.2 mM was applied at seven-leaf stage or ten-leaf stage three times. Drought stress was imposed by withholding irrigation from 11 days before anthesis to 10 days after anthesis. Application of salicylic acid significantly increased ear length by 11.0~12.3% and yield by 8.8~11.3% compared with non-treated control, indicating that the drought injuries of waxy corn can be alleviated through pre-treatment of salicylic acid at the vegetative stage.
