Widths between the first permanent molars and the mesio-distal widths of the four anterior teeth were measured on 32 lower and 33 upper dental casts of young adults aged 18-25 yerars. The casts were grouped in five categories-two where no anterior crowding existed, and three in which varying degrees of crowding were present. Subjects with a difference between arch width and anterior tooth widths greater than 4mm in the upper arch, or 10mm in the lower arch, rarely had crowding. As arch width changes very little from age 7 onwards, measurements at this age may be used as a screening mechansim for future arch crowding.
A girl aged 18 years and 1 month, had a Angle's Class III malocclusion, characterized by .anterior crossbite, anterior crowding, and constriction from right lower 2nd premolar to right lower 2nd molar. This patient underwent sealing and (equation omitted) extraction, and multibanded system was placed. After 14 months, anterior crossbite and crowding was corrected, an bothdental arches were improved. After 6 months from debanding, band space disappeared and any relapse was not detected.
Objective: To evaluate the relationship of gingival thickness (GT) and the width of keratinized gingiva (WKG) with different malocclusion groups and the level of crowding. Methods: A total of 187 periodontally healthy subjects (121 females and 66 males) who presented at the Faculty of Dentistry in $Y{\ddot{u}}z{\ddot{u}}nc{\ddot{u}}$ Yil University for orthodontic treatment were enrolled in the study. The individuals involved in the study were divided into three groups; Angle Class I malocclusion, Angle Class II malocclusion, and Angle Class III malocclusion. Each group was classified as mild, moderate, or severe according to the level of crowding. WKG was determined as the distance between the mucogingival junction and the free gingival margin. GT was determined by the transgingival probing technique. Factorial variance analysis and the Duncan multiple comparison test were employed to identify the extent to which a difference was apparent between the groups according to these parameters. Results: It was determined that teeth in the mandibular anterior region display the thin gingival biotype. WKG and GT were observed as being higher at the mandibular incisor teeth in the severe crowding group and at the mandibular canine teeth in the mild crowding group. The GT of the mandibular right central and lateral incisors was found to be thinner in the Angle Class III group. Conclusions: Within the limits of this study, the results demonstrate that, there is no significant relationship of WKG and the mean GT in the mandibular anterior region according to the Angle classification.
The research work has been conducted in order to establish facts on posterior available space in patients with crowding. The relation between crowding and posterior available space was worked out through a cross sectinal study of fifty eight patients showing class I malocclusion. In addition, a longitudinal overlapping study was done by examing twenty patients who had their bicuspid extracted and forty nine patients who did not, at the orthodontic department of dental clinic affiliated in Chosun University. The patients had been examined for three years and eight months on a regular basis, and the study yielded the following conculusion. 1. There was a great difference in posterior available space between patients with serious crowding and those with slight crowding. The former marked 15.2mm of posterior available space and the latter 19.9mm. 2. Posterior crowding index was acquired by joint consideration of the diameter of posterior teeth and posterior available space, and manifested the highest relationship with crowding among measured items. 3. Patients who had their bicuspids extracted exhibited increase in posterior available space of 1.6mm/year and those who did not 1.8mm/year. 4. The absorption of anterior border of ramus turned out to be most deeply related with the increase of posterior available space. 5. Anterior border of ramus was absorbed at the average rate of 0.7mm/year during the period of observation. 6. The extraction of bicuspids had little influnce on the change in posterior available space.
This article describes the orthodontic treatment of a 25-year-old Korean female patient with anterior crowding, including palatally displaced lateral incisors. Her facial profile was satisfactory, but 3.5 mm of maxillary anterior crowding was observed. To correct this crowding, we decided to minimize the use of the conventional fixed orthodontic appliances and employed a less bulky and more aesthetic appliance for applying light continuous force. We determined the final positions of the maxillary teeth via a working model for diagnostic set up and achieved space gaining and alignment with simple Ni-Ti spring and stainless steel round tubes. Tooth alignment was achieved efficiently and aesthetically without the conventional brackets.
In patients with moderate crowding, the use of Pendulum appliance can be considered as one of intra-arch appliances. Its resolves the crowding by moving molars distally in the maxillary arch. The most important advantage of Pendulum appliance does not require patient cooperation at all. In this case we used a Pendulum appliane to resolve anterior crowding with a single-arch treatment in the maxillary arch.

Maxillary transverse deficiency often manifests as a posterior crossbite or edge-to-edge bite and anterior crowding. However, arbitrary arch expansion in mature patients has been considered to be challenging due to the possible periodontal adverse effects such as alveolar bone dehiscence and gingival recession. To overcome these limitations, nonsurgical maxillary expansion of the basal bone has been demonstrated in young adults. However, the age range for successful orthopedic expansion has remained a topic of debate, possibly due to the underlying individual variations in suture maturity. This case report illustrates nonsurgical, miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) in a 60-year-old patient with maxillary transverse deficiency accompanied by anterior and posterior crossbites, crowding, and gingival recession. The use of MARPE allowed relief of crowding and correction of the crossbite without causing significant periodontal adverse effects.

Extracting mandibular incisors for orthodontic treatment may adversely affect the occlusion. However, when properly used, extraction of mandibular inciors is a selection for the correction of the malocclusion. Generally, treatment for crowding needs to select between nonextraction and four premolar extraction. Approaches for crowded mandibular incisors include distal movement of posterior teeth, lateral movement of canines, labial movement of incisors, interproximal enamel reduction, removal of premolars, removal of one or two incisors, and various combinations of the above. Extraction of incisors is used in case of crowding, anterior tooth size discrepancy, absent of maxillary lateral incisors, and ectopic eruption. But severe overjet. overbite, and space are the contraindication of it. A patient had severe crowding on upper anterior teeth, impacted upper left lateral incisor, palatal ectopic eruption of upper right incisor and severe crowding on lower anterior teeth. Lower lateral incisors are extracted for space availability and facial esthetics. We report the case of orthodontic treatment of upper and lower anterior crowding through extraction of lateral incisor.
The patient, 19 years old female, complained of protrusion of upper and lower anterior teeth. Teeth lining was good except slight crowding in lower anterior teeth. Teeth lining was good except slight crowding in lower incisors, but distocclusion in the region of right buccal segment was present. Cephalometric analysis revealed normal relation between maxilla and cranial base. The labial inclination of upper and lower anterior teeth was severe, so diagnosed as bialveolar protrusion case. She was treated by means of multibanded system under the extraction of four first bicuspids. After 1 year and 4 months. She gained good interdigitation of buccal segments and attractive facial profile because the labioversion of incisors was reduced properly.
This article describes the orthodontic treatment of a 31-year-old Korean female patient with gummy smile and crowding. The patient showed excessive gingival display in both the anterior and posterior areas and a large difference in gingival heights between the anterior and posterior teeth in the maxilla. To correct the gummy smile, we elected to intrude the entire maxillary dentition instead of focusing only on the maxillary anterior teeth. Alignment and leveling were performed, and a midpalatal absolute anchorage system as well as a modified lingual arch was designed to achieve posterosuperior movement of the entire upper dentition. The active treatment period was 18 months. The gummy smile and crowding were corrected, and the results were stable at 21 months post-treatment.
