  • A microstrip-fed miniaturized folded-slot antenna that is cut at the finite ground plane edge for the size reduction is proposed as a ZigBee module operating in the 2.4 GHz frequency band, as specified by the IEEE standard 802.15.4. The antenna is fabricated within space limited to $35mm{\times}9mm$ on a $35mm{\times}35mm$ substrate, which is about the PCB size of a typical wireless ZigBee module. The measured impedance bandwidth and antenna gain are 2.37~2.49 GHz and 2.4 dBi respectively. The measured radiation patterns are similar to conventional folded-slot antennas and are also stable across the pass band. These properties and its compact structure help in making the antenna suitable for ZigBee module.

  • This paper introduces the T/RX combined compact active channel module which is a key unit of the active phased array antenna(APAA) system. This module is mainly compoased of two parts for TX and RX fabricated on both sides of the active module for size reduction. The TX-part is primarily composed of a 3-stage amplifier, a microstrip phase shifter, a thermal compensation and a power detection circuit. The RX-part is composed of LNAs a microstrip phase shifter and BPFs for TX power rejection. Using the proposed design structure we can realized a compact active channel module having high performance.

  • The sintering behavior and microwave properties of ferrite ($Ba_3Co_{2-2x}Zn_{2x}Fe_{24}O_{41}$ ceramics) were investigated for microwave applications. Also PIFA type antenna with ferrite was simulated. All samples were prepared by the solid state reaction method and sintered at $1350^{\circ}C$. All ceramics had relatively density above of 92% compare with theoretical density of $Ba_3Co_2Fe_{24}O_{41}$ ceramics. From the XRD pattens, the Z-type phase was existed as main phase in $Ba_3Co_{2-2x}Zn_{2x}Fe_{24}O_{41}$ ceramics. The permittivity and permeability of $Ba_3Co_{2-2x}Zn_{2x}Fe_{24}O_{41}$ ceramics were increased with Zn additions and decreased rapidly over frequency of 200~600 MHz. Several PIFA type antennas with ferrite and FR4 were simulated. All antenna structure had return loss of less than -10 dB at each resonant frequency. Simulated antenna using both ferrite and FR4 showed size reduction of 25% without a significant decrement of efficiency.

  • In recent years, one of the most remarkable 5G technologies is massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) system which increases spectral efficiency by deploying a large number of transmit-antennas (eg. tens or hundreds transmit-antennas) at base station (BS). However, conventional massive MIMO system using single-polarized (SP) transmit-antennas increases the size of the transmit-array proportionally as the number of transmit-antennas increases. Hence, size reduction of large-scale transmit-array is one of the major concerns of massive MIMO system. To reduce the size of the transmit-array at BS, dual-polarized (DP) transmit-antenna can be the solution to halve the size of the transmit-array since one collocated DP transmit-antenna deploys vertical and horizontal transmit-antennas compared to SP transmit-antennas. Moreover, proposed DP massive MIMO system increases the spectral efficiency by not only in the space domain but also in the polarization domain whereas the conventional SP massive MIMO system increases the spectral efficiency by space domain only. In this paper, the comparative performance of DP and SP massive MIMO systems is analyzed by space division multiple access (SDMA) and space-polarization division multiple access (SPDMA) respectively. To analyze the performance of DP and SP massive MIMO systems, DP and SP spatial channel models (SCMs) are proposed which consider depolarized propagation channels between transmitter and receiver. The simulation results show that the performance of proposed 32 transmitter (Tx) DP massive MIMO system improves the spectral efficiency by about 91% for a large number of user equipments (UEs) compare to 32Tx SP massive MIMO system for identical size of the transmit-array.

  • This paper describes a compact microstrip antenna with dual polarization characteristics. The antenna, receiving both a left-hand circularly polarized(LHCP) wave and a right-hand circularly polarized(RHCP) wave, can be used for a polarization diversity. A diamond-shaped patch with internal empty room is designed for impedance matching as well as size reduction. And slots are added around feeding point to improve input matching. The proposed antenna has been applied to GPS(global positioning system), operating at 1.57GHz. And, the proposed idea has been verified and estimated by simulation. The measurement results show that it has VSWR 2:1 bandwidth of 83MHz, 3dB axial bandwidth of about 58MHz, 3dB beamwidth of 90degree, and gain of 0dBi, respectively, for RHCP. Also, it has similar performances for LHCP.

  • A CRLH-TL based compact metamaterial antenna on a magneto-dielectric material is proposed. The proposed antenna is composed of two patches and vias, which is loaded by a magneto-dielectric material constructed by SRRs. The characteristic of SRRs is studied, and the size reduction of the antenna by using the magneto-dielectric material is confirmed. The simulated resonant frequency of the antenna has showed a decrease of 7.13 % at - 1st-order resonant mode, and 23.9 % at zeroth-order resonant mode. A zeroth-order resonant antenna is fabricated and measured, which has a resonant frequency of 1.888 GHz, a bandwidth of 0.48 %, a gain of 0.534 dBi, and an efficiency of 51.7 %.

  • In this paper, Quad-Band small antenna for GSM850, GSM900, DCS1800, DCS1900 is designed and fabricated. The antenna achieved the size reduction of over 67.9 % than the conventional PIFA(Planar Inverted-F Antenna) by using a MD(Magneto-Dielectric) material. A simple feeding microstrip line is used to feed the antenna from a $50{\Omega}$ coaxial line, which is capacitively coupled to the grounded patch structure for broadband characteristics. The impedance bandwidth the proposed antenna shows good results as broadband characteristics of 1341 MHz (801 ~ 2142 MHz) in VSWR < 3 (${\leq}\;-6\;dB$) and the gain is -6.67 ~ 4.25 dBi in the operating frequency.

  • A turnstile antenna using the parasitic monopole has been developed for STSAT-2 TT&C application. The antenna consists of two radiating elements; a bow-tie dipole and a parasitic monopole. The bow-tie dipole is main radiating element, used a bow-tie structure for bandwidth improvement and size reduction. The parasitic monopole improved beamwidth and axial ratio. The input impedance of the antenna is about 50 ohm without a matching circuit. The proposed antenna has beamwidth of $>140^{\circ}$, axial ratio of < 3 dB and VSWR of < 1.5 in the band of $2.075{\sim}2.282GHz$.

  • In this paper, single-feed equilateral triangular microstrip antennas(ETMA) for circular polarization(CP) are designed and studied experimentally. It is demonstrated that by embedding a narrow slot or a cross of unequal slot lengths in the triangular patch circularly polarized radiation RHCP(right-hand circularly polarized wave), LHCP(left-hand circularly polarized wave) of microstrip antennas can easily be achieved using by strategically positioned coaxial single probe feed. And the size of a triangular microstrip patch antenna is smaller than that of a conventional rectangular or circular patch at a given frequency. A single-feed ETMA with a horizontal narrow slot is printed on the substrate of 60 mils thick and the other ETMA with a corss slot of unequal slot lengths is printed on the same substrate. The antenna radiation characteristics are calculated by ENSEMBLE(Ver. 5.0) software, and compared with the experimental results. This results show that the antenna size reduction of about $17%{\sim}2l%$ is obtained as compared to the regular-size CP design.
