The proximate composition and various specific components of Antarctic krill Euphausia superba, in the catch season between March and August were investigated. Frozen krill were freeze-dried and milled. The proximate composition comprised water, proteins, fats, ash, fatty acids, and amino acids, while the specific components were vitamins, minerals, nucleotides, betaine, and astaxanthin. The moisture content of the krill ranged from 77 to 80%, with the highest value in June, and the ash content was between 12 and 13%. The protein content was lowest in May, and the fat content was 18-19%, with the highest value in March. The amino acid content varied according to the season: taurine and glycine were highest in August; ${\beta}$-alanine was higher in April and May; and arginine, ornithine, and lysine were highest in March. The unsaturated fat content was ~50% and omega-3 fatty acids were highest in June. Oil-soluble vitamins A and E were highest in March, and the water-soluble vitamin content was less than that of oil-soluble vitamins. The mineral content was highest in June, and the most abundant mineral was sodium at 235.60 mg/100 g krill. The content of other minerals was lowest (2.94 mg/100 g) in April, except for lead. The nucleotide content was highest in July, while the betaine content was highest in April and lowest in June. The astaxanthin content was highest in May and ranged from 6 to 10 ppm in other months.

Commercial split beam echosounder (ES70) installed on a krill fishing vessel was calibrated in order to utilize it in estimating biomass of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba). The method of calibration was to analyze the difference between the bottom backscattering strength of the commercial split beam echosounder (i.e. ES70) and the scientific echosounder (i.e. EK60) at one of transects near South Shetland Islands designated by CCAMLR. 38 kHz and 120 kHz were used for the calibration, and krill swarm signal levels obtained from multi frequencies, was examined to verify the calibration result. The analysis result indicated possibility of calibration by bottom backscattering strength, since the proportion of krill swarm signals within 2 dB < $S_{V\;120\;kHz-38\;kHz}$ < 12 dB (i.e. a common $S_{V\;120\;kHz-38\;kHz}$ range of 38 kHz and 120 kHz to be an indicator of Antarctic krill) over the total acoustic signals were 26.95% and 92.04%, respectively before and after the calibration.
Instant krill gruel was produced using peeled Antarctic krill Euphausia superba as a high nutritional ingredient and the food quality was investigated. The food quality of krill gruel was examined by measuring proximate composition, cholesterol, calorie, Hunter color value, total amino acids, fatty acids, fluoride, viscoelastic properties, and by sensory evaluation. The krill gruel had a moisture content of 87% and a pH of 6.65. The krill gruel contained 51 kcal/100 g, and 0.1% fat and 3.5 mg/100 g cholesterol. Its fatty acid composition exhibited high levels of unsaturated fatty acids. The levels of oleic acid and linolenic acid were high, and n-3, n-6, and n-9 fatty acid contents ranged from 1% to 6%. The total amino acid content was 2132 mg/100 g, and the levels of glutamic acid, aspartic acid, leucine, alanine, and arginine were particularly high. Essential amino acids accounted for over 30% of the total amino acids. Fluoride level in the krill gruel was 3.07 mg/kg. The viscoelastic properties of the krill gruel were determined as 6.28 Pa at shear stress of 2.51 Pa. In the recovery test, the elastic restoring force after deformation was low.
The aim of the study were to investigate the influences of krill (Euphausia superba) meal on the body weight, lipid metabolism functional improvement, blood glucose level, protein component in the sera of rats which fed experimental diets for 5 weeks. Serum concentrations of total cholesterol, Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, free cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), phospholipid (PL) and blood glucose were higher in the control diet group (G1 group) than the control diet plus 10% krill meal group (G2 group), the control diet plus 20% krill meal group (G3 group), the control diet plus 30% krill meal group (G4 group), and a general dose and time independent one-way analysis of variance was performed to assess efficacy. Conversely depending on the content of krill meal for the High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol level, it showed higher results. The concentrations of total protein, albumin and globulin in sera, there were not significant difference among the groups (p<0.05). The results indicate that a krill meal diet effectively inhibited increases in lipid elevation, blood glucose level in the sera of rats.

This study developed patties using the Antarctic krill Euphausia superba and investigated the food quality of the patties. Three different types of krill patty were produced: krill patties with added 1) corn oil (CKP), 2) AA grade surimi (AKP), and FA grade surimi (FKP). Their proximate composition, Hunter color value, texture, sensory evaluation, and levels of astaxanthin, cholesterol, calories, total amino acids, fatty acids, and fluoride were investigated. The moisture and crude protein contents were highest in FKP. The calorie and astaxanthin contents were highest in CKP and lowest in AKP. The cholesterol content was highest in CKP and lowest in AKP. Measuring the Hunter color value of cross-sections of the patties, the L values were highest for FKP, and the a and b values highest for AKP. The total amino acids were highest in FKP and lowest in CKP. The major fatty acids were highest in FKP. The hardness and chewiness were highest in FKP and lowest in CKP. The fluoride content was highest in AKP and lowest in FKP. The sensory evaluation had the highest scores for FKP and lowest for CKP. Accordingly, FKP appears to have better food quality than the other two products.

This study was purposed to elucidate the migration phenomenon of fluoride from the chitinous sections into the muscle flesh of the frozen krill during thawing. The fluoride content ratio between chitinous sections and muscle flesh in the frozen krill was 94.8 : 5.2. Among the several thawing methods used, migration velocity of fluoride was the highest in the krill thawed with microwave and the lowest in the krill thawed at low temperature $(4^{\circ}C)$. The migrated amount of fluoride after thawing was various depended upon the thawing methods, and the increased amount during thawing was 2-5 times higher than Initial amount before thawing.
To estimate biomass and distribution of the Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), hydroacoustic survey was conducted on board of R/V Yuzhmorgeologiya, which was chartered by Korea Antarctic Research Program (KARP) group from 18 to 21 December 1998, in the northern part of the South Shetland Islands, Antarctic Ocean, The scientific echo sounder (towing body type) used was EK- 500 (SIMRAD, Norway) with echo integrator (BI-500) at 38 kHz frequency and recorded mean backscattering cross-section coefficient (SA) per 1 $mile^2$ of sea surface. Also, Bongo net sampling was carried out to determine the size of krill and CTD (Conductivity, Temperature and Depth) casting to understand physical structure. Water column was divided into 5 layers (22$\~$65 m, 65$\~$115 m, l15$\~$65 m, 165$\~$215 m and 215$\~$315 m) to know vertical distribution of krill biomass. The standard length of krill collected was between 30 mm and 51 mm, and adult krill had single mode (41 mm). Maximum horizontal length of krill patch was about 35 nautical mile and vertical thickness was about 275 m. High density of krill was appeared in frontal area between Circumpolar Deep Water (>$1^{\circ}C$) and very low temperature water mass (< $-0.5^{\circ}C$) that originate from Weddell Sea. According to the results calculated using target strength equation, krill density was totally higher in continental slope and open water areas than in coastal area. In the study area, krill seems to distribute in depth; density was low at first layer ($\={\rho}=17.0\;g/m^2$) and higher at fourth layer ($\={\rho}=40.19\;g/m^2$). The estimated krill biomass at total survey area and water column was about 2.77 million metric ion ($\={\rho}=151.0\;g/m^2$) and coefficient of valiance ( CV, $\%$) was 19.92. The proportions and biomass of krill biomass at each layer were as follows; layer 1 ($11.3\%$, 0.31 million metric ton, CV=16.24), layer 2 ($13.3\%$, 0.37 million metric ton, CV=34.91), layer 3 ($23.7\%$, 0.66 million metric ton, CV=41.5), layer 4 ($26.6\%$, 0.74 million metric ton, CV=27.84) and layer 5 ($25\%$, 0.69 million metric ton, CV= 26.83).
Acoustic survey for density and biomass estimate of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, was conducted in the large area between South Shetland Islands and South Orkney Islands, during November 30-December 30, 2002. Considering oceanographic and geographic properties, the study area was divided into six sub-regions. Acoustic system and frequency used in the survey were quantitative echo sounder (Simrad Ek 500) and 38, 120-kHz split beam transducers. In order to discriminate krill aggregations in all acoustic signal, difference of mean volume backscattering strength $({\Delta}MVBS)$ method of the two frequencies was introduced. Averaged krill density for the overall surveyed area was $23.5g/m^2$, and spatially averaged estimates of krill density were $44.9g/m^2$ (north of the South Shetland Islands), $30.3g/m^2$ (Bransfield Strait), $11.3g/m^2$ (near the Elephant Island), $13.6g/m^2$ (north of the Elephant Island), $18.1g/m^2$(between Elephant Island and South Orkney Islands) and $21.7g/m^2$(northwest of the South Orkney Islands) at each sub-area. In the two sub-regions with surveyed area, estimated krill biomass in the north of the Elephant Island was 0.315 million tones with a CV of 18.35% $(6,766mile^2)$, and between Elephant Island and South Orkey Islands was 1.26 million tones with a CV of 9.45% $(20,299mile^2)$. As a whole, the krill density in the early summer season was low level, comparing with that of January-February. This suggested that major krill swarms in the around South Shetland Islands were reached in the mid-summer seasons from western part of the Antarctic Peninsula, and the low krill density also affects the density variation of the krill between Elephant Island and South Orkney Islands.
Cooperative scientific research in Antarctic has been successful since the International Geophysical Year 1957/1958. Presently, 43 nations have joined the Antarctic Treaty as consultative parties or acceding states, and other treaties and agreements have evolved to conserve the integrity and to manage the resources of the Antarctic ecosystem. Although yet to be designated, tourism areas in Antarctica are under consideration. Due to its remoteness and vast magnitude, Antarctica's science is slowly emerging. Satellite technology has enabled observation of the progression of the ozone hole above Antarctica. Mineral exploitation has yet to take place, as has the transport of Antarctic icebergs to some arid nations. On the other hand, both seal and whale exploitations have occurred, devastating these populations. The lessons learned from past human greed are used to design krill and squid fisheries, though the life histories of these organisms are yet to be adequately understood. An ecosystem approach to managing Antarctic resource exploitation is essential. Procuring the needed logistics to do so is daunting, requiring the highest degree of international cooperation and educational outreach to nurture the needed effective scientific and engineering talent, both natural and social.
