In this study, we evaluated environmental-friendly disease control methods using essential oils, antagonistic bacteria, or cooking oil and egg yolk mixture (COY). Among the five tested plant essential oils, Eucalyptus approximans oil shown the highest effect to control of the downy mildew disease (60% disease control value). Interestingly enough, well known antagonistic bacteria against various fungal pathogens were appeared lower control efficiency than plant essential oils. In field conditions, the cooking oil and yolk mixture (COY) treatments shown significantly decreased the downy mildew incidence with 0.3% (disease conttrol value 84%) and 0.5% concentration (disease control value 91%). Our findings suggest that the COY has a great potential as the eco-friendly downy mildew disease control formulation.
The effect of Panaquilon (Partial Component of Panax ginseng), on the isolated clam heart, the motility of the isolated clam heart suspended in physiological solution for clam heart was recorded by the Magnus Method. 1. The concentration of $5{\times}10^{-6}$ of Panaquilon produced cardiac arrest in the diastolic state, which resumed the normal state slowly after changing the physiological solution for clam heart. 2. Cardiac arresting action of Panaquilon was antagonistic when pretreated with Serotonin.
Ginseng total saponins(GS), protopanaxadiol saponins(PD) and protopanaxadiol saponins(PT) antagonized the analgesia in mice induced by morphine. The administrations of 2,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine, and 5-hydroxytryptophan reduced the GS, PD and PT antagonisms of morphine analgesia. Possible mechanisms involved in the antagonistic actions of GS, PD and PT on morphine analgesia were described.
Antagonistic effects of yohimbine on xylazine and ketamine anesthesia in goats were studied. Xylazine or ketamine anesthesia alone was not antagonized by yohimbine, but the time for consciousness and recovery in xylazine and ketamine anesthetized goats were remarkably shortened by yohimbine. Reversal effect of yohimbine on the heart rate and body temperature which decreased following xylazine and ketamine was not observed and respiratory rate which increased after xylazine and ketamine was sligtly reduced by yohimbine.
Alisol B(II) and alisol B monoacetate (III) isolated from the rhizome of Alisma orientale Jazepczuk (Alismataceae) showed antagonistic effects against the contractions induced by angiotensin and bradykinin in rat ileum. However, they seem to be nonspecific antagonism.
As a continuation of the previous studies, a third group of thirty five hot aqueous extracts from natural products were screened for platelet activating factor(PAF) receptor binding antagonistic acitivities using rabbit platelet. The results demonstrate that Arctium lappa is potential source of PAF antagonist.
We found out the new method of the consortium for the environmental friendly agriculture by 8 kinds of the selected antagonistic rhizobacteria. This research involved composition of mutual complementary consortium by each antagonistic function such as production of antibiotic, siderophore, antifungal cellulase and insoluble phosphate solubilization. The consortium No.11 among composed consortium candidates showed the most pepper growth promoting activity and Phytophthora blight suppression on the in vivo pot test of red-pepper plant. The consortium No. 11 is combination of PGPR Bacillus subtilis AH18 and Bacillus licheniformis K11. B. subtilis AH18 and B. licheniformis K11 both could produce the auxin, antifungal ${\beta}$-glucannase and siderophore. Also, they had mechanism for solubilization of insoluble phosphate. But, B. licheniformis K11 could produce the antibiotic of iturin which was able to inhibit Phytophthora capsici. We confirmed complementary noncompetitive mutualism between B. subtilis AH18 and B. licheniformis K11 of the consortium No.11. The results came out through treatment of two strains co-culture, treatment of individual culture and co-treatment of two individual cultures for the growth and Phytophthora blight suppression of red-pepper. The treatment of two strains co-culture didn't show a synergic effect in comparing sole treatment on the pepper growth promotion and Phytophthora blight suppression. But, when the pots were treated simultaneously with co-treatment of two individual cultures, an synergic effect was seen in the growth promotion of roots, stem, leaves and suppressed Phytophthora blight on red-pepper in vivo pot test.

There are various crop diseases in green houses that are caused by the cultural environments, especially high temperature and moisture. To solve the forementioned problems, farmers are overusing agricultural chemicals, causing other damages by the chemical residue. In this study, antagonistic bacteria as biological control agents were isolated to produce the environmentally-friendly crops for use in green houses. Eighteen species of antagonistic bacteria were totally isolated from the soil and plants in the Perilla fields, and AK-17 showed the highest activity among the isolates. According to the results of anti-fungal spectrum against several pathogens by AK-17, the antagonism effect of the isolates was remarkable against grey mold rot by Botrytis cinerea, sclerotinia rot by Sclerotnia sclerotiorum, and stem rot by Rhizoctonia solini. To evaluate the biological control effects of the isolates against the major diseases of Perilla, studies were carried out to evaluate the preventive and the curative effects of the diseases throughout the pot experiments. According to the forementioned experiments, the preventive and the curative effects by the isolates against sclerotinia rot were respectively showed as 55% and 92%. For the grey mold rot, those were 40% and 78%, respectively. As to the evaluation of the growth-promoting effect by AK-17, the length and the biomass of the tested plants were increased to 120% and to 164%, respectively. For the leaf numbers and area were respectively increased to 120% and 220%. Furthermore, AK-17 was identified as Burkhoderia sp. according to the results of physiological properties and genetic methods.

In a course of searching for biofungicide to control crisphead lettuce bottom rot caused by Rhizoctonia solani, we have isolated an antagonistic bacterium from lettuce rhisophere soil. A total of 702 bacterial isolates were isolated and tested for in vitro growth inhibition of R. solani. Seven strains appeared to have strong antagonistic effect against R. solani in in vitro growth inhibition assay. In the pot experiments, a strain BW-13 showed the most potent disease control effect on the both lettuce seedlings and adults plants. Therefore, the BW-13 was selected as a biocotrol candidate against crisphead lettuce bottom rot. Based on its morphology, physiological characteristics, and 165 rRNA gene analysis, the BW-13 was finally identified as Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. This study indicated that S. maltophilia BW-13 could be used as a biocontrol agent to control crisphead lettuce bottom rot.
Anthracnose caused by Collectotrichum acutatum is the most devastating disease of pepper plants in Korea. In this study, we evaluated the effect of selected antagonistic bacteria on control of anthracnose and plant growth promotion of pepper plants under field conditions. Four different bacterial isolates used in the current study were isolated from the pepper rhizosphere (GJ01, GJ11) and tidal flat (LB01, LB14) in previous studies. Four bacterial isolates, together with a control strain (EXTN-1), showed antifungal activity against C. acutatum in a dual culture assay. To test for plant growth promotion effect, seedling vigor index and growth parameters of pepper were measured under field condition. As a result, all four bacterial isolates were effective for improving plant growth promotion. The strain GJ01 was the most effective in improving the seedling vigor on pepper, but the strain GJ11 in increasing the pepper fruit yield. The incidence of anthracnose was inhibited in the range of 63.2~72.5% by treatment of four bacterial isolates. The current study indicated that the four bacterial isolates could be used as potential biological control agents of anthracnose disease of pepper.
