  • The objective of this paper is to propose an ant colony optimization (ACO) for clustering design in wireless sensor network problem. This proposed ACO approach is designed to deal with the dynamics of the sensor nodes which can be adaptable to topological changes to any network graph in a time. Long communication distances between sensors and a sink in a sensor network can greatly consume the energy of sensors and reduce the lifetime of a network. We can greatly minimize the total communication distance while minimizing the number of cluster heads using proposed ACO. Simulation results show that our proposed method is very efficient to find the best solutions comparing to the optimal solution using CPLEX in 100, 200, and 400 node sensor networks.

  • This paper propose a novel scheme called selective evaluation to improve convergence of ACO (ant colony optimization) for feature selection. The scheme cutdown the computational load by excluding the evaluation of unnecessary or less promising candidate solutions. The scheme is realizable in ACO due to the valuable information, pheromone trail which helps identify those solutions. With the aim of checking applicability of algorithms according to problem size, we analyze the timing requirements of three popular feature selection algorithms, greedy algorithm, genetic algorithm, and ant colony optimization. For a rigorous timing analysis, we adopt the concept of atomic operation. Experimental results showed that the ACO with selective evaluation was promising both in timing requirement and recognition performance.

  • One of the challenging tasks in Mobile Ad hoc Network is to discover precise optimal routing solution due to the infrastructure-less dynamic behavior of wireless mobile nodes. Ant Colony Optimization, a swarm Intelligence technique, inspired by the foraging behaviour of ants in colonies was used in the past research works to compute the optimal path. In this paper, we propose a Recurrent Ant Colony Optimization (RECACO) that executes the actual Ant Colony Optimization iteratively based on recurrent value in order to obtain an optimal path convergence. Each iteration involves three steps: Pheromone tracking, Pheromone renewal and Node selection based on the residual energy in the mobile nodes. The novelty of our approach is the inclusion of new pheromone updating strategy in both online step-by-step pheromone renewal mode and online delayed pheromone renewal mode with the use of newly proposed metric named ELD (Energy Load Delay) based on energy, Load balancing and end-to-end delay metrics to measure the performance. RECACO is implemented using network simulator NS2.34. The implementation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms like AODV, ACO, LBE-ARAMA in terms of Energy, Delay, Packet Delivery Ratio and Network life time.

  • In this paper, a method using the Ant Colony Optimization(ACO) is proposed for reducing the power consumption of memory ECC checker circuitry which provide Single-Error Correcting and Double-Error Detecting(SEC-DED). The H-matrix which is used to generate SEC-DED codes is optimized to provide the minimum switching activity with little to no impact on area or delay using the symmetric property and degrees of freedom in constructing H-matrix of Hsiao codes. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method can provide further reduction of power consumption compared with the previous works.

  • A numerical method is presented here to detect and assess structural damages from changes in natural frequencies using Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm. It is possible to formulate the inverse problem in terms of optimization and then to utilize a solution technique employing ACO to assess the damage/damages of structures using natural frequencies. The laboratory tested data has been used to verify the proposed algorithm. The study indicates the potentiality of the developed code to solve a wide range of inverse identification problems in a systematic manner. The developed code is used to assess damages of beam like structures using a first few natural frequencies. The outcomes of the simulated results show that the developed method can detect and estimate the amount of damages with satisfactory precision.

  • One of the important fields for heuristic algorithm is how to balance between Intensification and Diversification. In this paper, we deal with the performance improvement techniques through balance the intensification and diversification in Ant Colony System(ACS) which is one of Ant Colony Optimization(ACO). In this paper, we propose the hybrid searching method between intensification strategy and diversification strategy. First, the length of the global optimal path does not improved within the limited iterations, we evaluates this state that fall into the local optimum and selects the next node using changed parameters in the state transition rule. And then we consider the overlapping edge of the global best path of the previous and the current, and, to enhance the pheromone for the overlapping edges increases the probability that the optimal path is configured. Finally, the performance of Best and Average-Best of proposed algorithm outperforms ACS-3-opt, ACS-Subpath, ACS-Iter and ACS-Global-Ovelap algorithms.

  • This study investigates some of swarm intelligence algorithms to tackle a traditional damage detection problem having stiffness degradation or damage in mechanical structures. Particle swarm(PSO) and ant colony optimization(ACO) methods have been exploited for localizing and estimating the location and extent damages in a structure. Both PSO and ACO are population-based, stochastic algorithms that have been developed from the underlying concept of swarm intelligence and search heuristic. A finite element (FE) model updating is implemented to minimize the difference in a set of natural frequencies between measured and baseline vibration data. Stiffness loss of certain elements is considered to simulate structural damages in the FE model. It is numerically shown that PSO and ACO algorithms successfully completed the optimization process of model updating in locating unknown damages in a truss structure.

  • This paper proposes a new algorithm for path planning and obstacles avoidance using the ant colony optimization algorithm and the particle swarm optimization. The proposed algorithm is a new hybrid algorithm that composes of the ant colony algorithm method and the particle swarm optimization method. At first, we produce paths of a mobile robot in the static environment. And then, we find midpoints of each path using the Maklink graph. Finally, the hybrid algorithm is adopted to get a shortest path. We prove the performance of the proposed algorithm is better than that of the path planning algorithm using the ant colony optimization only through simulation.

  • Recently, Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is emerged as a simple yet powerful optimization algorithm for routing and load-balancing of both wired and wireless networks. However, there are few researches trying to adopt ACO to enhance routing performance in WSN owing to difficulties in applying ACO to WSN because of stagnation effect. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient path selection algorithm based on ACO for WSN. The algorithm is not by simply applying ACO to routing algorithm but by introducing a mechanism to alleviate the influence of stagnation. By the simulation result, the proposed algorithm shows better performance in data propagation delay and energy efficiency over Directed Diffusion which is one of the outstanding schemes in multi-hop flat routing protocols for WSN. Moreover, we checked that the proposed algorithm is able to mitigate stagnation effect than simple ACO adoption to WSN.
