In this study, numerical simulations were conducted for conjugate heat transfer around ice balls in an encapsulated ice thermal storage system. Four shapes of ice balls were modeled; the default one was a sphere, and the other three shapes were designed to enhance convective heat transfer through the ball surface. The flow around the ball was laminar, for which the Reynolds number was 300, and both forced and natural convections inside and outside the balls were considered. The simulations revealed that the magnitude of convective heat transfer for the different shapes decreased in the following order: bone, dimple, hole, and sphere. For the entire simulation, the maximum difference in the average temperatures of water inside the capsules was found to be $0.9^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it can be said that the effect of ice-ball shape on the performance of the ice thermal storage system is significant, considering that more than 0.3 million balls are used in this system.

A system for diagnosing surface defects of long and large pipe inner overlay welds, 1m in diameter and 6m in length, was developed using a Liquid Penetrant Test (PT). First, CATIA was used to model all major units and PT machines in 3-dimensions. They were used for structural strength analysis and strain analysis, and to check the motion interference phenomenon of each unit to produce two-dimensional production drawings. Structural strength analysis and deformation analysis using the ANSYS results in a maximum equivalent stress of 44.901 MPa, which is less than the yield tensile strength of SS400 (200 MPa), a material of the PT Machine. An examination of the performance of the developed equipment revealed a maximum travel speed of 7.2 m/min., maximum rotational speed of 9 rpm, repeatable position accuracy of 1.2 mm, and inspection speed of $1.65m^2/min$. The results of the automatic PT-inspection system developed to check for surface defects, such as cracks, porosity, and undercut, were in accordance with the method of ASME SEC. V&VIII. In addition, the results of corrosion testing of the overlay weld layer in accordance with the ferric chloride fitting test by the method of ASME G48-11 indicated that the weight loss was $0.3g/m^2$, and met the specifications. Furthermore, the chemical composition of the overlay welds was analyzed according to the method described in ASTM A375-14, and all components met the specifications.

This paper discusses about results of advanced buckling strength design for several kinds of perforated plated in the twin-hull car-ferry. For medium / small sized high speed vessels with a length of more than 50 meters and a length / width ratio of more than 12, such as car-ferries, it is highly possible that the buckling strength becomes weak due to the relatively thin thickness and the use of low strength capacity such as mild steel. Especially, it becomes big problem about weak buckling rigidity around the opening to access purpose in the perforated. As regarding safety design point of view for perforated plate, it is necessary to clarify buckling strength and ultimate strength by the distribution of in-plane load distribution around the opening. In this study, nonlinear series analysis using ANSYS was performed to clarify the influence of parameters such as aspect ratio, opening ratio and opening shape affecting the buckling and ultimate strength characteristics of the perforated plate under axial compression and we are derived the optimum design as buckling strength point of view. Based on these results, the governing factor determining the buckling strength of the perforated plate was the opening ratio, and the aspect ratio and the shape of the hole were not influenced.

A simple method to evaluate the hygroscopic characteristics of polymer of microelectronic plastic package is suggested. To evaluate the characteristics, specimens were prepared, and the internally absorbed moisture masses were measured as a function of the absorbing time and calculated numerically. The hygroscopic pressure ratio was calculated by heat transfer analysis supported by commercial FEM code because the hygroscopic diffusion equation has the same form as the heat transfer equation. The moisture masses were then summed by the self developed code. The nonconductive polymers had quite different characteristics for the different lots, even though they were the same products. The absorbed moisture mass variations were calculated for several different characteristics, and the optimal curve of the mass variation close to experimental data was selected, whose solubility and diffusivity were affected by the hygroscopic characteristics of the material. The method can be useful in the industrial fields to quickly characterize the polymer material of the semiconductor package because the fast correspondence is normally required in industry. The weight changes in the aluminum-nonconductive-polymer joint due to moisture absorption were measured. The deformed system was also measured using the Moire Interferometry system and compared with the results of finite element analysis.
The purpose of this study was to find the difference of stress distribution of initial compressive and tensile stress when anterior section of upper utility arch was activated crown lingual torque of $5^{\circ},\;10^{\circ},\;15^{\circ}$ through three-dimensional finite element analysis. For this study the finite element model of upper central and lateral incisors, 1st. and 2nd. premolars and 1st. molars and each periodontal membrane and upper utility arch were made. From the solutions of ANSYS the followings were obtained. 1. $5^{\circ},\;10^{\circ},\;15^{\circ}$ crown lingual torque produce the almost similar distribution and measurement of initial compressive and tensile stress. 2. Acivated upper utility arch torqued central inciors lingually and lateral incisors labially.

Stress transfer to the surrounding tissues is one of the factors involved in the design of dental implants. Unfortunately, insufficient data are available for stress transfer within the regenerated bone surrounding dental implants. The purpose of this study was to investigate the concentration of stresses within the regenerated bone surrounding the implant using three-dimensional finite element stress analysis method. Stress magnitude and contours within the regenerated bone were calculated. The $3.75{\times}10-mm$ implant (3i, USA) was used for this study and was assumed to be 100% osseointegrated, and was placed in mandibular bone and restored with a cast gold crown. Using ANSYS software revision 6.0, a program was written to generate a model simulating a cylindrical block section of the mandible 20 mm in height and 10 mm in diameter. The present study used a fine grid model incorporating elements between 165,148 and 253,604 and nodal points between 31,616 and 48,877. This study was simulated loads of 200N at the central fossa (A), at the outside point of the central fossa with resin filling into screw hole (B), and at the buccal cusp (C), in a vertical and $30^{\circ}$ lateral loading, respectively. The results were as follows; 1. In case the regenerated bone (bone quality type IV) was surrounded by bone quality type I and II, stresses were increased from loading point A to C in vertical loading. And stresses according to the depth of regenerated bone were distributed along the implant evenly in loading point A, concentrated on the top of the cylindrical collar loading point B and C in vertical loading. And, In case the regenerated bone (bone quality type IV) was surrounded by bone quality type III, stresses were increase from loading point A to C in vertical loading. And stresses according to the depth of regenerated bone were distributed along the implant evenly in loading point A, B and C in vertical loading. 2. Stresses according to the depth of regenerated bone were concentrated on the top of the cylindrical collar in loading point A and B, distributed along the implant evenly in loading point C in lateral loading. And stresses according to the depth of regenerated bone were distributed along the implant evenly in loading point A, B and C in lateral loading. In summary, these data indicate that both bone quality surrounding the regenerated bone adjacent to implant fixture and load direction applied on the prosthesis could influence concentration of stress within the regenerated bone surrounding the cylindrical type implant fixture.

The purpose of this study was to comparatively analyze the stress distribution according to the inclinations of abutments and angulations of the implant fixtures under occlusal loading force. Three study models with straight and $15^{\circ}$ and $25^{\circ}$-angled abutments were prepared following the insertion of Implants parallel to the long axis of the tooth. Additional two experimental models were fabricated with $15^{\circ}$ and $25^{\circ}$ fixture inclinations. Using ANSYS 11, a finite element analysis program, the magnitudes of stress distribution were analyzed. The magnitude of stress under loading was lowest when the load was applied vertically onto the axis of implant. And the magnitude of stress under compound(vertical+oblique) loading was increased as the inclination of implant abutment and fixture was increase. But, the distribution of stress was different as the loading conditions, because of the horizontal offset. As the offset between the axis of loading and the central axis of the implant increased, the stress was increased.

The reliability of leaded and lead-free solders of BGA type packages on a printed circuit board was investigated by employing the standard drop test and 4-point bending test. Tested solder joints were examined by optical microscopy to identify associated failure mode. Three-dimensional finite element analysis(FEM) with ANSYS Workbench v.11 was carried out to understand the mechanical behavior of solder joints under the influence of bending or drop impact. The results of numerical analysis are in good agreement with those obtained by experiments. Packages in the center of the PCB experienced higher stress than those in the perimeter of the PCB. The solder joints located in the outermost comer of the package suffered from higher stress than those located in center region. In both drop and bending impact tests, the lead-free solder showed better performances than the leaded solders. The numerical analysis results indicated that stress and strain behavior of solder joint were dependent on various effective parameters.

In this study, the stiffness of an LMU (Leg Mating Unit), which is a device required for installing the top side part of an offshore structure, was examined through structural analysis. This unit is mounted on the supporting point of the structure and is used to absorb the shock at installation. It is a cylindrical structure with an empty center. To support the vertical load, elastomeric bearings (EBs) and iron plates are laminated in layers. The stiffness of the EBs is basically influenced by the size of the bearings, but it varies with the number of laminated sheets inside the same sized structure. The relationship between the stiffener and the compressive stiffness is investigated, and its design is suggested. The stiffness of the EBs is analyzed by calculating the reaction force, while controlling the displacement. First, the relationship between the size of the reinforcing plate and the compressive stiffness is considered. Next, the relationship between the number of stacked reinforcing plates and the compression stiffness is considered. Different loads are required for each installed point. The goal is to design the compression stiffness in such a way that the same deformation occurs at each point in the analysis. In this study, ANSYS is used to perform the FE analysis.

A cabinet-door integrated finite element model for a built-in side-by-side refrigerator with an ice dispenser and home bar was constructed, and its deformation was analyzed by ANSYS. As loads, the food load in the shelf and baskets, and thermal load occurring during the normal operation condition were considered. From results of the analyses, the door height difference (DHD) and door flatness difference (DFD) between the two doors, and the increase in the gap of the door gasket, which affects the sealing of cool air in the cabinet, were derived. As results of an evaluation of the differences, the DHD and DFD under the assembled condition satisfied the acceptance criteria of the manufacturer. The food and thermal loads increased the DHD and DFD due to thermal deformation, and the DFD increased significantly. In addition, the increase in the gap of door gasket located between the cabinet and doors was derived from the results of displacements under the food and thermal loads. The evaluation showed that the maximum increase in gap appeared at the left edge of the freezing compartment gasket, which satisfied the acceptance criteria of the manufacturer.
