  • Anodizing to form oxide layers on the pure titanium was performed in the electrolyte containing 1.5M $H_2SO_4$, 0.2M $H_3PO_4$, and 2.5wt.% $CuSO_4$ using the ac-biased arc anodizing technique. Titanium oxide layers anodized with different applied voltages, voltage-elevating rates, and anodizing times were investigated. In addition, thermal oxidation test under an atmospheric environment for the arc-anodized specimens was carried out. The thickness of oxide layers were not affected by the voltage-elevating rates, but increased slightly with the increase of anodizing times. The thickness of oxide layers were increased with the increase of voltages, and increased remarkably in the condition of 200V. The size and number of the pore observed in the center of the porous cell were decreased with increase of applied voltage. From the result of thermal oxidation test, it revealed that oxide layer formed by arc anodizing more effective to prevent oxidation of pure titanium.

  • Anodizing processes is the conversion of the aluminum surface to aluminum oxide while the part is the anode in an electrolytic cell. The object of the anodizing was increased corrosion resistant, paint adhesion and was provided unique, decorative colors. Many electrolytes, under different conditions, have been used for the anodic oxidation of alumminum and its alloys. This paper deals with the procedures used in the anodic oxidation of aluminum and its alloys, the nature and properties of the oxide films, their uses and anodizing equipment and process control.

  • We investigated the oxide thickness and color evolution with the oxidation temperatures between $370^{\circ}C$ and $950^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes in an electric furnace. Oxide thickness and color index were determined by cross sectional field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images and digital camera images, respectively. We confirmed that thermal oxidation was suitable for the mass production of color-titanium products, while coloring process window was narrow compared with anodizing oxidation process.

Effects of pre-treatment process such as chemical polishing, acid cleaning, alkali etching before anodic oxidation, were studied to microstructures and surface morphologies. A roughness on surface of anodizing film had to be decreased for amorphous phase by anodic oxidation. A roughness on surface of anodizing film decrease as annealing temperature increased in chemical polishing.

  • Purpose : This experiment examined the effects of anodization on commercially pure titanium implant fixtures. Material & methods : The implant fixtures were anodized at three different voltage levels, producing three different levels of oxidation on the surface of the fixure. Implant were divided into four groups according to the level of oxidation. Group 1 consist of the control group of machined surface implants, Group 2 implants were treated by anodizing to 100 voltage, Group 3 implants were treated by anodizing oxidation to 200 voltage Group 4 implants were treated by anodizing oxidation to 350 voltage. Surface morphology was observed by Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) and the surface roughness was measured using NanoScan $E-1000^{\circledR}$. Implantation of the fixtures were performed using New Zealand white rabbits. $Periotest^{\circledR}$ value(PTV) resonance frequency analysis(RFA), and removal torque were measured in 0, 2, 4, 8, 12 weeks after implantation. Results : The results of the study were as follows: 1. Values for the measured surface roughness indicate statistically significant differences in Ra, Rq, and Rt values among group 1, 2, 3, and 4 at the top portion of the thread,(p<0.05) while values at the base of the threads indicated no significant difference in these values. 2. A direct correlation between the firming voltage, and surface roughness and irregularities were observed using scanning electron microscope. 3. No statistically significant differences were found between test groups regarding $Periotest^{\circledR}$ values. 4. Analysis of the data produced by RFA, significant differences were found between group 1 and group 4 at 12 weeks after implantation.(p<0.05) Conclusions : In conclusion, no significant differences could be found among test groups up to a certain level of forming voltage threshold, beyond this firming voltage threshold, statistically significant differences occurred as the surface area of the oxide layer increased with the increase in surface porosity, resulting in enhanced bone response and osseointegration.

  • Anodic oxidation treatment of metals is one of typical surface finishing methods which has been used for improving surface appearance, bioactivity, adhesion with paints and the resistances to corrosion and/or abrasion. This article provides fundamental principle, type and characteristics of the anodic oxidation treatment methods, including anodizing method and plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method. The anodic oxidation can form thick oxide films on the metal surface by electrochemical reactions under the application of electric current and voltage between the working electrode and auxiliary electrode. The anodic oxide films are classified into two types of barrier type and porous type. The porous anodic oxide films include a porous anodizing film containing regular pores, nanotubes and PEO films containing irregular pores with different sizes and shapes. Thickness and defect density of the anodic oxide films are important factors which affect the corrosion resistance of metals. The anodic oxide film thickness is limited by how fast ions can migrate through the anodic oxide film. Defect density in the anodic oxide film is dependent upon alloying elements and second-phase particles in the alloys. In this article, the principle and mechanisms of formation and growth of anodic oxide films on metals are described.

  • Graphite epoxy composite material (GECM) shows high specific strength and its application in the aerospace industry is gradually increasing. However, its application would induce galvanic corrosion between GECM and metallic materials. This work focused on the effects of anodizing and thermal oxidation on galvanic corrosion in a 3.5% NaCl solution between GECM and aluminium and titanium. In the case of anodized aluminium, galvanic corrosion resistance to the GECM was greatly improved by the anodizing treatment regardless of area ratio. In the case of anodized titanium, the anodizing by a formation voltage of 50V increased corrosion resistance of titanium in galvanic tests. Thermal oxidation of titanium also improved corrosion resistance of Ti to GECM.
