The annular-reverse combustor was designed for APU combustor and a three dimensional analysis for reactive flow in the combustor was performed. At the same time, the experimental work was performed in KARl combustor test facility. In this study we found out that tangential swirl type combustor is good for flame holding than single vortex type combustor. The flame tube main hole size and relative position are very important parameters for combustor general performance. The ignition characteristics are strongly depend on the air fuel ratio with combustor inlet volume flow ratio.
Development of a small gas-turbine combustor for 100kW class APU(Auxiliary Power Unit) has been performed. This combustor is a reverse-annular type and has a tangential swirler in the liner head to improve the fuel/air mixing and flame stability. Three main and three pilot fuel injectors of the simplex pressure-swirl type are used. The performance target at the design condition includes a turbine inlet temperature of 1170K, a combustion efficiency of 99%, a pattern factor of 30%, and an engine durability of 3000 hours. Under developing the combustor, we conducted performance test of our first prototype(TS1) with some variants. As a result of the test, the performance targets of the combustor are satisfied except that the pattern factor is about 4% higher than target value. So, we redesigned the second prototype(TS2) and conduct performance test with the critical focus on pattern factor and exit mean temperature. We adopted TS2 four variant to check the improvement of pattern factor. As the result, the pattern factors of several variants were satisfied with the performance target. Finally, We chose the TS2A variant as a final combustor for our APU model.

Objective : Symptomatic disc degeneration develops from inflammatory reactions in the annulus fibrosus (AF). Although inflammatory mediators during annular inflammation have been studied, the roles of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their inhibitors have not been fully elucidated. In this study, we evaluated the production of MMPs and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase (TIMPs) during annular inflammation using an in vitro co-culture system. We also examined the effect of notochordal cells on annular inflammation. Methods : Human AF (hAF) pellet was co-cultured for 48 hours with phorbol myristate acetate-stimulated macrophage-like THP-1 cells. hAF pellet and conditioned media (CM) from co-cultured cells were assayed for MMPs, TIMPs, and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 levels using real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and enzyem-linked immunosorbent assay. To evaluate whether notochordal cells affected MMPs or TIMPs production on annular inflammation, hAF co-cultured with notochordal cells from adult New Zealand White rabbits, were assayed. Results : MMP-1, -3, -9; and TIMP-1 levels were significantly increased in CM of hAF co-cultured with macrophage-like cells compared with hAF alone, whereas TIMP-2 and IGF-1 levels were significantly decreased (p<0.05). After macrophage exposure, hAF produced significantly more MMP-1 and -3 and less TIMP-1 and -2. Interleukin-$1{\beta}$ stimulation enhanced MMP-1 and -3 levels, and significantly diminished TIMP-2 levels. Co-culturing with rabbit notochordal cells did not significantly influence MMPs and TIMPs production or COL1A2 gene expression. Conclusion : Our results indicate that macrophage-like cells evoke annular degeneration through the regulation of major degradative enzymes and their inhibitors, produced by hAF, suggesting that the selective regulation of these enzymes provides future targets for symptomatic disc degeneration therapy.

An annular denuder filter pack sampling system (ADS) was used to collect acidic air pollutants in Pusan. During the study period (from June 1995 to November 1995), forty eight samples were collected every 12 hours starting from 6:00 in the morning. These samples were devided into two sets of data for day (6:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.) and night (6:00 p.m.-6:00 a.m.). The chemical species were analyzed for HN $O_3$, HN $O_2$, S $O_2$ and N $H_3$ in the gas Phase, and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ , S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $H_4$$^{+}$ in the particulate phase. The mean concentrations measured from this study were 0.24, 1.91, 30.07 and 4.24 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ for HN $O_3$, HN $O_2$, S $O_2$ and N $H_3$, respectively. The mean concentrations of N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ , S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $H_4$$^+{\ulcorner}$ were 1.95, 7.36 and 3.48 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, respectively. The mean concentrations of gaseous species except for HN $O_2$ were higher in daytime than in nighttime, but the reverse was true in the particulates except for N $H_4$$^{+}$. +/..

The annular and coaxial swirl flows between which LPG is supplied was selected to study the swirling flames in double co-swirl flows. The objective of this study is to research into the effects of double co-swirl flow conditions on the stability limit, the reverse flow boundary, and the time mean temperature distributions of the swirling flames. The increase of swirl intensity of axial flow makes the stability limit decrease, but the annular swirl flow (SM>0.5) makes stability and swirl intensity of axial flow increase, And the existence of axial swirl flow makes flame intensive and small in size, and this may be applicable to the design of high power compact combustor.

A 100kW class gas turbine combustor was developed and tested for PPU(Primary Power Unit) of ground vehicle. The combustor which employed annular-reverse type and pressure swirl atomizer was designed through 1-D analysis, 3-D thermal flow analysis and combustor performance was experimentally investigated on the combustor test rig. The test result was satisfactory. The developed combustor was also tested for environmental and endurance specification under engine adopted conditions and the application of a state-of-the-art gas turbine combustor to ground vehicle PPU turned out to be successful.

A numerical study has been conducted on the development of the velocity and temperature fields in a laminar flow through an eccentric annular duct. A bipolar coordinates system is adopted, and a numerical program is developed to analyze 3-dimensional parabolic flow problems. In the analysis of the velocity field, the entrance length has been defined as the distance where the axial pressure gradient is greater than that of the developed velocity field by 5%. The dimensionless hydrodynamic entry length increases with increasing eccentricity. In the transverse flow fields, the reverse flow region along the wall due to the developing axial velocity near the entrance of the duct is found. In the analysis of the temperature field, the thermal entry length has been defined as the axial distance where the mean fluid temperature is 5% less than that of the developed temperature field. The dimensionless thermal entry length increases as eccentricity or Prandtl number increases. The overshoot of the mean Nusselt number over the developed value at the zero-temperature wall is encountered, and the rate of the overshoot increases with the increase of the eccentricity and Prandtl number.
Objective : To develop a simple, reproducible model of disc degeneration in rabbits through percutaneous annular puncture and to confirm the degree of degeneration over time. Methods : Fifteen New Zealand white rabbits (4 to 5 months old and weighing approximately 3 to 3.5 kg each) underwent annular puncture of the L2-L3, L3-L4, and L4-L5 discs. Rabbits were sacrificed at 4, 8, or 20 weeks after puncture. For a longitudinal study to assess changes in disc height over time, serial X-rays were performed at 0, 2, 4, 8, and 20 weeks for rabbits in the 20-week group. Upon sacrifice, the whole spinal column and discs were extracted and analyzed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, and histological staining. Results : The X-rays showed a slow, progressive decrease in disc height over time. Significant disc space narrowing compared to preoperative disc height was observed during the time period (p<0.001). The MRI grade, aggrecan, and matrix metalloprotease-13 mRNA expression and hematoxylin and eosin/safranin O/anti-collagen II staining were consistently indicative of degeneration, supporting the results of the X-ray data. Conclusion : Percutaneous annular puncture resulted in slow, reproducible disc degeneration that was confirmed by radiology, biochemistry, and histology. This in vivo model can be used to study and evaluate the safety and efficacy of biologic treatments for degenerative disc disease.

In order to see flame behavior in the annular reverse gas turbine combustor, sector combustion test was performed. Ignition test by using torch ignition system was carried out at various combustor inlet velocity and air fuel ratio. Also, flame blow out limit was measured by changing fuel flow rate with constant air mass flow rate. In test results, stable ignition is possible at air excess ratio of 6 and this limit is gradually increased with combustor inlet velocity. The minimum blow out limit is about 4 at 40 m/s of combustor inlet velocity. This blow out limit is also increased up to about 10 with increasing combustor inlet velocity. Test result shows that lean blow out limits are increased with air velocity. The highest blow out limit was found at the combustor inlet velocity of 65 m/s.
