In this paper South Africa is divided into strong wind climate zones, which indicate the main sources of annual maximum wind gusts. By the analysis of wind gust data of 94 weather stations, which had continuous climate time series of 10 years or longer, six sources, or strong-wind producing mechanisms, could be identified and zoned accordingly. The two primary causes of strong wind gusts are thunderstorm activity and extratropical low pressure systems, which are associated with the passage of cold fronts over the southern African subcontinent. Over the eastern and central interior of South Africa annual maximum wind gusts are usually caused by thunderstorm gust fronts during summer, while in the western and southern interior extratropical cyclones play the most dominant role. Along the coast and adjacent interior annual extreme gusts are usually caused by extratropical cyclones. Four secondary sources of strong winds are the ridging of the quasi-stationary Atlantic and Indian Ocean high pressure systems over the subcontinent, surface troughs to the west in the interior with strong ridging from the east, convergence from the interior towards isolated low pressure systems or deep coastal low pressure systems, and deep surface troughs on the West Coast.
This paper resents frequency distribution of annual maxima of daily rainfall, temperature and pressure at twelve major meteorological stations in South Korea based on avaliable series of annual maxima. As a first step a traditional way of estimating the probabilities of extremes using Jenkinson's method was used here. The results are presented in the form of graph giving the various recurrence periods of rainfall, temperature and pressure and the frequency distributions obtained are discussed.
Tools for statistical analysis of extreme values include the classical annual maximum method, the modern threshold method and variants improving the second one. While the annual maximum method is to t th generalized extreme value distribution to the annual maxima of a time series, the threshold method is to the generalized Pareto distribution to the excesses over a high threshold from the series. In this paper we deal with the Poisson-GPD method, a variant of the threshold method with a further assumption that the total number of exceedances follows the Poisson distribution, and apply it to the daily percentage increases and decreases computed from the spot prices of West Texas Intermediate, which were collected from January 4th, 1988 until December 31st, 2009. According to this analysis, the distribution of daily percentage increases as well as decreases turns out to have a heavy tail, unlike the normal distribution, which coincides well with the general phenomenon appearing in the analysis of lots of nowaday nancial data.
According to 5th IPCC Climate Change Report, there is a very high likelihood that the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events will increase. In reality, flood damage has increased, and it is necessary to estimate the future probabilistic design rainfall amount that climate change is reflected. In this study, the future probabilistic design precipitation amount is estimated by analyzing trends of future annual maximum daily rainfall derived by RCP 8.5 scenarios and using the scale-invariance technique. In the first step, after reviewing the time-scale characteristics of annual maximum rainfall amounts for each duration observed from 60 sites operating in Korea Meterological Administration, the feasibility of the scale-invariance technique are examined using annual daily maximum rainfall time series simulated under the present climate condition. Then future probabilistic design rainfall amounts for several durations reflecting the effects of climate change are estimated by applying future annual maximum daily rainfall time series in the IDF curve equation derived by scale-invariance properties. It is shown that the increasing trend on the probabilistic design rainfall amount has resulted on most sites, but the decreasing trend in some regions has been projected.

In order to estimate furture consumtive use, some statistical characteristics of 22-year pan evaporation data at four selected stations were calculated in this study. Districal distribution, trend analysis and time-series, statistical and periodic analysis for annual, monethly and ten-day values were performed in the statistical analysis. The stations are Seoul, Taeku, Jeonju and Mokpo for monthly data, and Suweon data are compared to the reported Penman values. The results are as followed: 1. Annual evaporation ranged to 990-1,375mm varying with the locations of the stations. The Districal distribution of evaporation in the Republic is shown in Fig. 1. 2. The trend analysis for annual evaporation resulted in detail in Table 2 and Fig. 2, through simple moving average methods. The results show relatively short-period data of about 10 years would be acceptable for field use. 3. The means and dispersions of monthly evaporation at four stations are detailed in Table 3. 4. The monthly evaporation approached to the trend of normal distribution Fig. 3 showed the examples of normal distribution for each typical monthly data. 5. The correlograms detailed in Fig. 4, shows the time-series characteristics of monthly evaporation, whose periodic term should be twelve months. 6. The periodic analysis for monthly evapolation results in Table 4. Fig. 5 shows the comparison of estimated values to actual and the trend approaches Shuster's periodic trend. 7. A periodic description of days after March 1 for irrigation periods was developed to predict ten-day evaporation in Fig. 6. The ten-day etraporation is different in the distribution form and occurence period of maximum values from the reported Penman's man's evapotranspiration.

Surface ozone concentrations are highly sensitive to meteorological variability. Therefore, in order to reveal the long-term changes in ozone due to the changes in precursor emissions, we need to remove the effects of meteorological fluctuations on the annual distribution of surface ozone. In this paper, the meteorologically adjusted trends of daily maximum surface ozone concentrations in two major Korean cities (Seoul and Busan) are investigated based on ozone data from 11 (Seoul) and 6 (Busan) sites over the period 1992 ∼ 2000. The original time series consisting of the logarithm of daily maximum ozone concentrations are splitted into long-term, seasonal and short-term component using Kolmogorov-Zurbenko (KZ) filter. Meteorological effects are removed from filtered ozone series using multiple linear regression based on meteorologcial variables. The long-term evolution of ozone forming capability due to changes in precursor emission can be obtained applying the KZ filter to the residuals of the regression. The results indicated that meteorologically adjusted long-term daily maximum ozone concentrations had a significant upward trend (Seoul: + 3.02% yr$^{-1}$ , Busan: + 3.45% yr$^{-1}$ ). These changes of meteorologically adjusted ozone concentrations represent the effects of changing background ozone concentrations as well as the more localized changes in emissions.

The major purpose of this study is to develop a regionalized regression model, which predicts flood peaks from the characteristics of the ungaged catchments, through the regional flood frequency analysis for the selected stage gauging stations located on several natural rivers of Korea. The magnitude and the frequency of flood peaks with specified recurrence intervals were estimated from the flood frequency analysis on the 28 selected stage gauging stations distributed on the five major rivers of Korea. The results of the analysis were compared with the predictions from the two different flood frequency models. From the statistical evaluation of these models, it was revealed that the POT model (Peaks Over a Threshold model), which is based on the partial duration method, is more effective in predicting flood peaks from short period records than the ANNMAX model (ANNual MAXimum model) which is based on the annual maximum series method. A regionalized regression model was developed to facilitate the estimation of design floods for ungaged catchments through the regression analysis between flood peaks and the topographic characteristics of the catchments assumed to be important in runoff processes. In addition to this, the correlation diagrams are presented which show the relationships between flood peaks with specified recurrence intervals and the major characteristics of the catchments.
Mainly, observed maximum rainfall has been evaluated by point rainfall, but actually it should be considered by means of average areal rainfall. Average areal rainfall is an estimated value computed through DAD(rainfall Depth-Area-Duration) analysis. By using this value, an average and maximum areal rainfall according to area-duration relationship could be computed. In this study, we assume that the whole Korea region is hydrologically homogeneous, and then analyze using the storm-centered DAD(moving-area DAD) method for the past century data. From this analysis, we evaluate the yearly variation of observed maximum areal rainfall through area-duration relationship. And we also construct an IDF(rainfall Intensity-Duration-Frequency) curve by using the annual time series data which is composed of maximum areal rainfall. The characteristics of IDF and observed maximum areal rainfall is also evaluated.
The present study is to develop the hydrologic analysis procedure for the purpose of drawing the probable isohyetal charts in Korea. In the establishment of optimal distribution types, the eleven continuous probability distribution types included the transformed variable normal distribution (Y-k method) is applied to the annual maximum rainfall depth series in each duration. The optimal selection of distribution is done by Chi-square test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test in the eui-class interval. The application of probability distribution is checked by the fitting on four durations of annual maximum rainfall data(10 min., 60 min., 6 hrs., and 24hrs.) at four meteorological stations in Korea (Seoul, In Cheon, Bu san, and Kwang Ju). The properties in hydrologic application of the considered distribution and the hydrologic characteristics of the applied rainfall data groups are investigated from the results of this study.
