This study aimed to understand temporal and spatial trends of rainfall characteristics in South and North Korea. Daily rainfall observed at the 65 stations in South Korea between 1963 and 2010 and the 27 stations in North Korea between 1973 and 2010 were analyzed. Rainfall Indicators for amount, extremes, frequency of rainfall were defined. Province-based indicators in the recent 10 years (i.e., between 2001 and 2010) were compared to those in the past (i.e., between 1963/1973 and 2000 for South/North Korea). In the recent 10 years, all the indicators except for the number of wet days (NWD) and 200-yr frequency rainfall (Freq200) increased in South Korea and all the indicators except for the annual mean daily rainfall over wet days (SDII) and annual total rainfall amount (TotalDR) decreased in North Korea. Furthermore, we performed the Mann-Kendall trend test based on the annual indicators. In some stations, decreasing trends in the past and increasing trends in the recent 10 years were found, and such opposite trends between two periods suggest he limitation in predicting and analyzing the rainfall characteristics based on the average. Results from this study can be used in analyzing the impact of climate change and preparing adaptation strategies for the water resources management.

Vu Gia - Thu Bon basin is located in central Vietnam between Truong Son mountain range on the border with Lao in the west and the East Sea in the east. The basin occupies about 10,350 km2 or roughly 90% of the Quang Nam Province and includes Da Nang, a very large city with about 876,000 inhabitants. Total annual rainfall ranges from about 2,000 mm in central and downstream areas to more than 4,000 mm in southern mountainous areas. Rainfall during the monsoon season accounts for 65 to 80% of total annual rainfall. The highest amount of rainfall occurs in October and November which accounts for 40 to 50% of the annual rainfall. Rainfall in the dry season represents about 20 to 35% of the total annual rainfall. The low rainfall season usually occurs from February to April, accounting for only 3 to 5% of the total annual rainfall. The mean annual flow volume in the basin is $19.1{\times}109m 3$. Similar to the distribution of rainfall, annual flows are distinguished by two distinct seasons (the flood season and the low-flow season). The flood season commonly starts in the mid-September and ends in early January. Flows during the flood season account for 62 to 69% of the total annual water volume, while flows in the dry season comprise 22 to 38% of total annual run-off. The water volume gauged in November, the highest flow month, accounts for 26 to 31% of the total annual run-off while the driest period is April with flows of 2 to 3% of the total annual run-off. There are some hydropower projects in the Vu Gia - Thu Bon basin as the cascade of Song Bung 2, Song Bung 4, and Song Bung 5, the A Vuong project currently under construction, the Dak Mi 1 and Dak Mi 4 projects on the Khai tributary, and the Song Con project on the Con River. Both the Khai tributary and the Song Con join the Bung River downstream of SB5, although the Dak Mi 4 project involves an inter-basin diversion to Thu Bon. Much attention has recently been focused on the effects that climate variability and human activities have had on runoff. In this study, data from the Vu Gia - Thu Bon River Basin in the central of Viet Nam were analyzed to investigate changes in annual runoff during the period of 1977-2010. The nonparametric Mann-Kendall test and the Mann-Kendall-Sneyers test were used to identify trend and step change point in the annual runoff. It was found that the basin had a significant increasing trend in annual runoff. The hydrologic sensitivity analysis method was employed to evaluate the effects of climate variability and human activities on mean annual runoff for the human-induced period based on precipitation and potential evapotranspiration. This study quantitatively distinguishes the effects between climate variability and human activities on runoff, which can do duty for a reference for regional water resources assessment and management.
The purpose of this study to present updated regional annual mean rainfall erosivity data in the Republic of Korea. In 2012, Ministry of Environment in Korea published the notice about investigation and survey procedure for the amount of topsoil erosion and adopted USLE (Universal Soil Loss Equation) model to predict the amount of national-scale soil erosion in Korea. In the notice, regional rainfall erosivity values for 158 sites, which is essential to apply the USLE, were included, however, these values came from the data made before 1997 and need to be updated. This study collected, classified and combined annual mean rainfall erosivity data from the literature review to analyze the data. We presented that new iso-erodent map, interpolated by IDW (Inverse Distance Weighted) method and extracted updated regional annual mean rainfall erosivity data at 167 regions for 1961~2015. These values will be used as updated rainfall erosivity data to predict the amount of topsoil erosion in Korea.
This study reviewed the parameter estimation procedure of the Freund bivariate exponential distribution for the decision of the annual maximum rainfall event. The method of moments was reviewed first, whose results were compared with those from the method of maximum likelihood. Both methods were applied to the hourly rainfall data of the Seoul rain gauge station measured from 1961 to 2010 to select the annual maximum rainfall events, which were also compared each other. The results derived are as follows. First, when applying the method of moments for the parameter estimation, it was found necessary to consider the correlation coefficient between the two variables as well as the mean and variance. Second, the method of maximum likelihood was better to reproduce the mean, but the method of moments was better to reproduce the annual variation of the variance. Third, The annual maximum rainfall events derived were very similar in both cases. Among differently selected annual maximum rainfall events, those with the higher rainfall amount were selected by the method of maximum likelihood, but those with the higher rainfall intensity by the method of moments.
This paper aims to know the characteristics of occurrence of the anomaly level and variability of the monthly precipitation in Kyeongnam, Korea. For this study, it was investigated 주e distribution of the annual and cont비y mean precipitation, the precipitation variability and its annual change, and the characteristics of occurrence of the anomaly level in Kyeongnam area the results were summarized as follows : 1) she mean of annual total precipitation averaged over Kyeongnam area is 1433.3mm. I'he spatial distribution of the annual total precipitation shows that in Kyeongnam area, the high rainfall area locates in the southwest area and south coast and the low rainfall area in an inland area. 2) Monthly mean precipitation in llyeongnam area was the highest in July(266.4mm) 각lowed by August(238.0mm), June(210.2mm) in descending order. In summer season, rainfall was concentrated and accounted for 49.9 percent of the annual total precipitation. Because convergence of the warm and humid southwest current which was influenced by Changma and typhoon took place well in this area. 3) The patterns of annual change of precipitaion variability can be divided into two types; One is a coast type and the other an inland type. The variability of precipitation generally appears low in spring and summer season and high in autumn and winter season. This is in accord with the large and small of precipitation. 4) The high frequency of anomaly level was N( Normal)-level and the next was LN( Low Informal) -level and 25(Extremely Subnormal)-level was not appeared in all stations. The occurrence frequency of N level was high in high rainfall area and distinguish성 in spring and summer season but the low rainfall area was not. hey Words : anomaly level, variability, precipitation, coast type, inland type.

A total of 65 rain gauges with Automatic Weather Station(AWS) were used to regional analysis of precipitation. Nine cluster regions were identified using geographical locations, maximum, mean, standard deviation of 1 day maximum rainfalls, mean annual precipitation and rainfall of rainy season in Korea. The mean annual precipitation, geographical locations, and the synoptic generating mechanisms were used to identify th five climatological homogeneous regions in Korea. Number of final regions by mean annual precipitation and cluster methods divided into five regions in Korea.
This study investigated the differences between annual maximum series and annual maximum independent rainfall event series with relatively short and long rainfall durations. Annual maximum independent rainfall events were selected by applying various IETDs and thresholds to the hourly rainfall data in Seoul for the duration from 1961 to 2010. Annual maximum independent rainfall event series decided were then compared with the conventional annual maximum series. Summarizing the results is as follows. First, the effect of IETD and threshold was not beyond the expected level. For example, as the IETD increases, the frequencies of independent rainfall events decreased similarly in their rate for both with short and long durations. However, as the threshold increases, the frequency of those with rather long durations decreased much higher. Second, The mean rainfall intensity of the independent rainfall events was found to remain constant regardless of their duration. This indicates that the annual maximum rainfall intensity could be found in a rainfall event with longer durations. Lastly, the difference between the annual maximum rainfall series and the annual maximum independent rainfall event series with rather short rainfall durations was found significantly large, which decreases with longer durations. This result indicates that the conventional data analysis method, especially for small basins with short concentration time, could lead an unrealistic design rainfall with little possibility of occurrence.
In order to determine the design precipitation, the most probable daily precipitation and annual precipitation at every spot are calculated and iso - precipitation line are drawn. Probability of precipitation and drought phenomena of each gage station are analyzied by the method of frequency analysis from the statistical conceptions. The results summarized in this study are as the follows. 1. Annual mean precipitation in kyungpook area are 1044 mm, about 115 mm less than annual mean precipitation of Korea amounts to l1S9mm, and found to regionally unequal. 2. Monthly mean rainfall of July is 242.2mm, 23.2%, August 174.2mm, 16.7%, June 115mm, 11% and September 114.2mm, 10.9% and Rainfall depth of July-August are more than 40% of annual precipition. This shows notable summer rainy weather by typoon and low pressure storm and seasonal unbalance of water supply. 3. The relation among the maximum precipi.tation per day, per two continuous days and per three contnous days are caculated and the latter is found 31.0% increased rate of the first and the last 48.2% increased rate of first. 4. Probability precipitation in Kyungpook area are shown as 9.0%(5 year), 13.3%(10 year), 17.7%(20 year), 23.1%(50 year), 27.0%(100 year) and 31.1%(200 year) increased rate of each recurrence year compared with observed average annual precipitation. 5. From annual precipitation and maximum daily rainfall data probability of precipitation and precipitation isohyetal line are derived which shown as Table 11 and Fig. 8. 6. Drought days are divided 6 class and analysed results are shown on table 12. Average occurrence time of 10-14 continuous drought days are 2.3 time per year, 15-19 days are 0.9 time per year, 20-24 days are one per six years, 30-34 days are once per nine years and over than 35days are once per 25 years.
This study used the beta distribution to analyze the independent annual maximum rainfall events from 1961 to 2010 and decided the representative rainfall event for Seoul. In detail, the annual maximum rainfall events were divided into two groups, the upper 50% and the lower 50%. For each group, a beta distribution was derived to pass the mean location of the rainfall peaks. Finally, the representative rainfall event was decided as the rainfall histogram of the arithmetic average of the two beta distributions derived. The representative rainfall event derived has a realistic shape very similar to those observed annual maximum rainfall events, especially with the higher rainfall peak compared to that of the Huff distribution. Comparison with other rainfall distribution models shows that the temporal distribution of the representative rainfall event derived in this study is most similar to the Keifer & Chu model.
About 12 rain gauge stations of Korea, annual maximum rainfall series of before and after 1980 whose durations are 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 hours respectively were composed and statistical characteristics of those time series were calculated and probability rainfall were estimated by L-moment frequency analysis method and compared each other in order to investigate the recent quantitative rainfall variations. And also, distribution curves of each statistical variations for each duration were constructed by using Kigging method to look into spacial rainfall variation aspects. As a result, We could confirm recent rainfall increase in the South Korea. And spatial increase pattern of standard deviation and frequency rainfall appeared analogously each other. 1n the cases of comparatively short rainfall duration, we could see relatively low increase or decrease tendency in Chungchong Province, Cholla-bukdo, Cholla-namdo eastern part, Kyongsang-namdo western part area. While, variations happened great1y in seaside district of east coast, southwest seashore, Inchon area etc. In the cases of longer durations relatively low increase was showed in southern seashore such as Yeosoo area and as distance recedes from this area, showed gradually augmented tendency. The aspect of mean looks similar tendency of above except that the variation rate of almost seaside district are big in the case of shorter durations. In addition, rainfall increases of short durations which became the center of hydrologist and meteorologist are unconfirmed in this study.
