  • Intake E-CVVT noise, generally caused by collision sound of roller and cage clearance at idle and driving condition, is considerable source of annoyance in passenger cars using the gasoline engine. Main source of this noise is the cam torque variation of an intake E-CVVT system, and can be controlled by clearance decrease such as backlash reduction, but which may increase the manufacturing cost. Thus in this paper, most effective solution for low noise intake E-CVVT was achieved through not only reduction of backlash and cam angular acceleration but also improvement of vehicle transfer system, which is optimal configuration through acoustic sensitivity optimization of engine mount support bracket.

  • It is very important to clarify the 3-D angular flow characteristics of in-cylinder bulk motion in the developing process of variable induction system. In-cylinder flow induced by variable induction system is very complex, so we can not describe the in-cylinder bulk flow characteristics using the conventional swirl or tumble coefficient. In this study, we introduced the new 3-D angular flow index, angular flow coefficient($N_B$), for in-cylinder bulk flow characteristics. And also, to confirm the index, we carried out the steady flow rig test for intake port of test engine varying valve lift on the test matrix.

  • This paper describes a design and a verification of linear state observers for a motorized seat belt system to estimate state information such as angular velocity and load torque. The motorized seat belt system provides functions to protect passengers and improve passenger's convenience. To realize these functions, sensors which can measure an angular velocity and load torque are needed. By use of the linear state observer, state information can be estimated without sensors. The motorized seat belt system is analysed and represented as a state space model which contains load torque as an augmented state. By the developed state space model, a full and reduced order observer are designed and verified by experiments. The full and reduced order observer are also compared from points of view of execution time and noise robustness.

  • Market demand for hydro-mechanical transmission (HMT) for agricultural tractors has increased recently. To select a type of HMT satisfying design conditions, performance characteristics of 12 HMT types must be understood. This study was conducted to provide tractor engineers with a guideline to select the most appropriate HMT type for their design requirements. Characteristics on speed reduction ratio, power transmission efficiency, power regeneration, lock-up angular velocity, output torque ratio and torque ratio of planetary gear train axis of the 12 HMT types were investigated and presented as either formula or graphical forms. A guideline to select proper HMT type was also presented using 2 parameter: lock-up angular velocity (${\omega}_L$) and torque ratio of the planetary gear train axis. In addition, effect of gear ratio of the planetary gear train on the power transmission efficiency was investigated and a guideline to select the best gear ratio was also presented.

  • Isokinetic test of muscle strength was performed on 20 patients operated laminectomy & discectomy. Peak torque of ankle dorsi flexors & plantar flexors at the angular velocity of $30^{\circ}$/sec and average power and total work of ankle dorsi flexors & plantar flexors at the angular velocity $90^{\circ}$/sec were measured and analyzed. The result were as follows: 1. Peak torque of non - dominant dorsi flexors at $30^{\circ}$/sec showed no significant difference statistically, but dominant dorsi flexors at $30^{\circ}$/sec showed significant difference statistically(p<0.05). 2. Peak torque of dominant & non - dominant plantar flexors at $30^{\circ}$/sec showed significant difference statistically(p<0.05). 3. Average power of dominant & non - dominant dorsi flexors at $90^{\circ}$/sec showed no significant difference statistically. 4. Average power of dominant & non - dominant plantar flexors at $90^{\circ}$/sec showed significant difference statistically (p<0.05). 5. Total work of dominant & non - dominant dorsi flexors at $90^{\circ}$/sec showed no significant difference statistically. 6. Total work of dominant & non - dominant plantar flexors at $90^{\circ}$/sec showed significant difference statistically(p<0.05).

  • Since the eddy current problem usually depends on the geometry of the moving conductive sheet and the shape of the pole projection area, there is no general method to find out its analytical solution. The analysis of the eddy current in a rotating disk is performed in the case of time-invariant field to find its analytical solution. As a method to solve the eddy current problem, the concept of the Coulomb charge and image method are proposed with the consideration of the boundary condition. Firstly, the line charge is obtained from the volume charge generated in the rotating disk and Coulomb's law is applied. Secondly, the finite disk radius is considered by introducing an imaginary eddy current to satisfy the boundary condition that the radial component of the eddy current is zero at the edge of the relating disk. Thirdly, the braking torque is calculated by applying Lorentz force law. Finally, the computed braking torque is compared with the measured one As a result, it can be said that the proposed model presents fairly accurate results in a low angular velocity range although a large error is observed as the angular velocity of the disk increases.

  • Torque fluctuation of an engine and angular velocity variation of a propeller shaft are the main excitation sources in the vehicle driveline. This paper presents brief mechanism of these excitation sources. Equivalent models of these systems are construced to simulate the excitation source. The computer simulation was carried out by ARLA Simul v 6.7 and ARLA-Simstat v 2.3. Results of the simulations show the characteristics of torsional excitation source of the driveline. Experimental setups for engine system and propeller shaft system are constructed with component of the vehicle. Torque fluctuation of the flywheel and angular velocity of the propeller shaft were measured from this experimental setups. Experimental results are compared with simulation results. The results from experimental analysis agree with those from theoretical results.

  • Purpose: The current study seeks to identify the relationship between torque values of the quadriceps and muscle activity during isometric and isokinetic exercises. Methods: The subjects of the study included 29 healthy individuals 17 men and 12 women) who took part in isometric and isokinetic exercises that utilized the quadriceps. The isometric exercises were performed three times each at 4 different angles (0, 30, 60, and 90 degrees). For the isokinetic exercises, concentric contraction and eccentric contraction were undertaken three times each at two angular velocities (30 and 60 degrees). Results: The muscle activity of the quadriceps during the isometric exercises showed significant differences at the 30, 60, and 90 degree angles. During the concentric contractions and eccentric contractions, muscle activity at the peak torque of the quadriceps indicated significant differences in vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, and rectus femoris at angular velocities of 30 and 60 degrees. Conclusion: When applied clinically based on the biomechanical analysis of the current study, it is possible to anticipate and selectively strengthen muscles with isometric and isokinetic exercises for not only healthy adults and professional athletes, but also for those who experience limited knee movement for long periods following knee surgeries.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to determine how stimulation using Russian current changes isokinetic exercise performance of quadriceps muscle and its antagonist muscles. Methods: Subjects were 20 20-year-old healthy adults who were instructed in the flexion to extension of knees in angular velocity $60^{\circ}/sec$ and $180^{\circ}/sec$ using a Biodex (Biodex system 3). We measured the difference in muscle performance between the Russian current stimulated at the same time during the flexion to extension of knees and not stimulated. Results: The results showed that when Russian current stimulation was applied at the angular velocity $60^{\circ}/sec$, the flexed and extended muscles and the angular velocity $180^{\circ}/sec$ increased significantly, but the peak torque of flexing muscles at the angular velocity $180^{\circ}/sec$ did not increase. Conclusion: These findings suggest that Russian current stimulation with isokinetic exercise of the knee joint could affect the quadriceps muscle and its antagonist muscle performance of muscle strength and endurance.
