A device that consists of an array of hydrofoils (called a vane deployer) is widely used in ocean engineering. In general, the vane deployer has to spread out efficiently, which is possible by enhancing the lift-to-drag ratio. In the present study, using a computational fluid dynamics, we investigate the effect of hydrofoil arrangement on the lift-to-drag ratio to establish the condition in which a reasonable level of constant lift-to-drag ratio is achieved in a wide range of angle of attack, to avoid a degradation of the hydrodynamic performance. First, the flow around two-dimensional hydrofoil array is examined by varying the size of hydrofoil components, gap between the hydrofoils, and arrangement type. As a result, we determine the optimized hydrofoil array configuration whose lift-to-drag ratio is nearly independent on the angle of attack. Finally, a three-dimensional simulation is performed for the optimized geometry to estimate the performance of actual vane deployer.

While the aerodynamics of solid bluff bodies is reasonably well-understood and methodologies for their reliable numerical simulation are available, the aerodynamics of porous bluff bodies formed by assembling perforated plates has received less attention. The topic is nevertheless of great technical interest, due to their ubiquitous presence in applications (fences, windbreaks and double skin facades to name a few). This work follows previous investigations by the authors, aimed at verifying the consistency of numerical simulations based on the explicit modelling of the perforated plates geometry and their representation by means of pressure-jumps. In this work we further expand such investigations and, contextually, we provide insight into the flow arrangement and its sensitivity to important modelling and setup configurations. To this purpose, Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) and Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) are performed for a 5:1 rectangular cylinder at null angle of attack. Then, using URANS, porosity and attack angle are simultaneously varied. To the authors' knowledge this is the first time in which LES are used to model a porous bluff body and compare results obtained using the explicit modelling approach to those obtained relying on pressure-jumps. Despite the flow organization often shows noticeable differences, good agreement is found between the two modelling strategies in terms of drag force.

Experimental investigations of the flow structure and heat transfer enhancement in a channel with a built-in circular cylinder and a wing-let type vortex generator are presented. Without any vortex generators, relatively low heat transfer takes place in the downstream of the circular cylinder where is a recirculation region with low velocity fluid is formed. However with a wing-let type longitudinal vortex generator in the wake region behind the cylinder, heat transfer in the region can be enhanced. In order to control the strength of longitudinal vortices, the angle of attack of the vortex generators is varied from $20^{circ} to 45^{\circ}$, but spacings between the vortex generations are fixed to be 5 mm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity field downstream of the vortex generator is measured by a five-hole pressure probe, and the hue-capturing method using thermochromatic liquid crystals has been used to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. The vorticity field and streamwise velocity contour are obtained from the velocity field. Streamwise distributions of averaged Stanton number on the measurement planes show very similar trends for all the experimental cases($\beta=20^{circ}, 30^{circ} and 45^{\circ}$). Circulation strength and heat transfer coefficient have the maximum values when the angle of attack($\beta$) is $30^{\circ}$.
Cavitation causes a great deal of noise, damage to components, vibrations, and a loss of efficiency in devices, such as propellers, pump impellers, nozzles, injectors, torpedoes, etc. Thus, the cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many engineering systems. In the present work, a two-phase flow solver based on the homogeneous mixture model has been developed. The solver employs an implicit preconditioning, dual time stepping algorithm in curvilinear coordinates. The flow characteristics around Clark-Y hydrofoil were calculated and then validated by comparing with the experimental data. The lift and drag coefficients with changes of angle of attack and cavitation number were obtained. The results show that cavity length and lift, drag coefficient increase with increasing angle of attack.
The present study investigates the effects of rib arrangements and aspect ratios of a rectangular duct simulating the cooling passage of a gas turbine blade. Two different V-shaped rib configurations are tested with the aspect ratios (W/H) of 3 to 6.82. One is the continuous V-shaped rib configuration with $60^{\circ}$ attack angle, and the other is the discrete V-shaped rib configuration with $45^{\circ}$ attack angle. The square ribs with the pitch to height ratio of 10.0 are installed on the test section in a parallel arrangement for both rib configurations. Reynolds numbers based on the hydraulic diameter are changed from 10,000 to 30,000. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to measure local heat/mass transfer coefficients. For the continuous V-shaped rib configuration, two pairs of counter-rotating vortices are generated in a duct, and high transfer region is formed at the center of the ribbed walls of the duct. However, for the discrete V-shaped rib configuration with $45^{\circ}$ attack angle, complex secondary flow patterns are generated in the duct due to its geometric feature, and more uniform heat/mass transfer distributions are obtained for all tested cases

An underwater glider makes it easy to explore a wide area with low power. However, an underwater glider is difficult to use for rapid collection, because the surfacing location cannot be predicted after a dive. Thus, simulation research is needed to predict the swimming path. In this paper, based on research, a linearized equation is derived for the drag coefficient at each angle of attack by assuming the boundary conditions for the Slocum underwater glider and performing a computational flow analysis.
This research computes the viscous flow field and aerodynamics around the model of a commercial passenger airplane, Boeing 747-400, which cruises in transonic speed. The configuration was realized through the reverse engineering based on the photo scanning measurement. In results, the pressure coefficients at the several wing section on the wing surface of the airplane was described and discussed to obtain the physical meaning. The lift coefficient increased almost linearly up to $17^{\circ}$. Here the maximum lift occurred at $18^{\circ}$ according to the angle of attack. And the minimum drag is expected at $-2^{\circ}$. The maximum lift coefficient occurred at the Mach number 0.89, and the drag coefficient rapidly increased after the Mach number of 0.92. Also shear-stress transport model predicts slightly lower aerodynamic coefficients than other models and Chen's model shows the highest aerodynamic values. The aerodynamic performance of the airplane elements was presented.

This paper dispicts the vortical flow characteristics over a delta wing using a computational analysis for the purpose of investigating and visualizing the effect of the angle of attack and fee stream velocity on the low-speed delta wing aerodynamics. Computations are applied to the full, 3-dimensional, compressible, Navier-Stokes Equations. In computations, the free stream velocity is changed between 20m/s and 60m/s and the angle of attack of the delta wing is changed between $16^{\circ}\;and\;28^{\circ}$. For the correct prediction of the major features associated with the delta wing vortex flows, various turbulence models are tested. The standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model predict well the vertical flows over the delta wing. Computational results are compared with the previous experimental ones. It is found that the present CFD results predict the vortical flow characteristics over the delta wing, and with an increase in the free steam velocity, the leading edge vortex moves outboard and its streangth is increased.
The galloping of iced conductors has long been a severe threat to the safety of overhead transmission lines. Compared with normal transmission lines, the ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transmission lines are more prone to galloping, and the damage caused is more severe. To control the galloping of UHV lines, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive analysis of galloping characteristics. In this paper, a large-span 1000-kV UHV transmission line in China is taken as a practical example where an 8-bundled conductor with D-shaped icing is adopted. Galerkin method is employed for the time history calculation. For the wind attack angle range of 0°~180°, the galloping amplitudes in vertical, horizontal, and torsional directions are calculated. Furthermore, the vibration frequencies and galloping shapes are analyzed for the most severe conditions. The results show that the wind at 0°~10° attack angles can induce large torsional displacement, and this range of attack angles is also most likely to occur in reality. The galloping with largest amplitudes in all three directions occurs at the attack angle of 170° where the incoming flow is at the non-iced side, due to the strong aerodynamic instability. In addition, with wind speed increasing, galloping modes with higher frequencies appear and make the galloping shape more complex, indicating strong nonlinear behavior. Based on the galloping amplitudes of three directions, the full range of wind attack angles are divided into five galloping regions of different severity levels. The results obtained can promote the understanding of galloping and provide a reference for the anti-galloping design of UHV transmission lines.
The effect of mean angle of wind attack on the flutter critical wind speed of two generic bridge deck cross-sections, viz, one closed box type streamlined section (deck-1) and closed box trapezoidal bluff type section with extended flanges/overhangs (deck-2) type of section have been studied using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) based forced vibration simulation method. Owing to the importance of the effect of the amplitude of forcing oscillation on the flutter onset, its effect on the flutter derivatives and flutter onset have been studied, especially at non-zero mean angles of wind attack. The flutter derivatives obtained have been used to evaluate flutter critical wind speeds and flutter index of the deck sections at non-zero mean angles of wind attack studied and the same have been validated with those based on experimental results reported in literature. The value of amplitude of forcing oscillation in torsional degree of freedom for CFD based simulations is suggested to be in the range of 0.5° to 2°, especially for bluff bridge deck sections. Early onset of flutter from numerical simulations, thereby conservative estimate of occurrence of instability has been observed from numerical simulations in case of bluff bridge deck section. The study aids in gaining confidence and the extent of applicability of CFD during early stages of bridge design, especially towards carrying out studies on mean incident wind effects.
