  • The purpose of this study was to compare the performance characteristics of Andersen and total suspended particulate (TSP) samplers in terms of particle size distribution (PSD) and mass sampling efficiency. In the present study, two Andersen and four TSP samplers were selected and tested to quantitatively estimate human exposure to fly ash representing industrial particulate matter (PM) in a carefully controlled chamber. The PSD characteristics, a mass median aerodynamic diameter and a geometric standard deviation, were found from the sampled PM of airborne samplers in the chamber. An Andersen sampler was compared with a TSP sampler quantified by a coulter counter multisizer, as a reference sampler, to describe the correlation of mass sampling efficiencies between two types of samplers. Overall results indicate that Andersen samplers overestimated small PM due to particle bounce phenomena between impaction stages. There was reasonably good correlation ($R^2$ = 0.89 and 0.91) between the mass sampling efficiencies of Andersen and TSP samplers during the two tests. However, the lower values of slope (0.71 and 0.72) in two tests showed that the Andersen sampler underestimated PM (> AD $10.1\;{\mu}m$) with sufficient inertia due to a relatively lower Andersen inlet velocity at 0.8 m/s comparing with the operating air velocity at 2.1 m/s in the sampling zone of a chamber.

  • Mass size distribution of atmospheric particulates were measured using an Andersen using an Andersen sampler in urban air. The atmospheric particulates were fractionated in eight stages of an Andersen sampler operating at 28.4$\ell/min$ and collected on polyester sheets. A quartz filter was placed behind the last stage collect permeated partculates. The size distribution of atmospheric particulates were divided around 1-2 $\mu$m into two groups, coarse and fine particulates regardless of sampling times. The variation of course particulates concentration was higher than fine particulates among sampling times. Different meterorological conditions and natural phenomena brought high variation of course particulates' concentration. The rain caused removal of coarse particulates seriously and the yellow and may take part in a increase of the course particulates in spring. The average concentration of atmospheric particulates to be collected by Andersen sampler was 170.8 $\mug/m^3$ during 3 times of sampling. Among them the average concentration of atmospheric particulates which could penetrated under a bronchi and alveoli were 70.4$\mug/m^3$ and 36.6$\mug/m^3$ respectively.

  • In this paper, we consider the Sparre Andersen risk model modified by the inclusion of interest on the surplus. By using the techniques of Cai and Dickson [Ins.: Math. Econ. 32(2003)], we give the functional and also the exponential type upper bounds for the tail probability of the deficit at ruin. Some special cases are also discussed.

  • Purpose: This study was done to apply Andersen's behavioral model to identify factors that determine oral health-related quality of life in elderly persons. Methods: Participants were 257 people ages 65 years or older. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: The variables in the behavioral model, predisposing factors, enabling factors and need factors, explained 31% (F=12.7, p<.001) of variance in oral health-related quality of life. The predisposing factors, enabling factors, need factors and health behavior collectively explained 35% (F=9.22, p<.001) of variance in oral health-related quality of life. Factors influencing oral health-related quality of life in older adults were ADL and IADL, self-reported oral health status, xerostomia and dental care in last 12 months. Conclusions: The analysis results showed that the need factor had the highest level of relative importance of the three factors. The model used for this study can be used to predict oral health-related quality of life.

  • This study concerns whether the public spirit of medical services, which is the foundational goal of national hospitals, is being realized. To derive results regarding this question, it is necessary to identify the determinants that influence the choice of national hospitals. The data are based on the number of cases of medical service use among the data for 6 years from 2008 to 2013 in the Korea Medical Panel, and the subjects were limited to those who were 18 years old or older. In the final analysis, 14,365 cases of hospitalization service uses were employed. For the research method, Andersen's behavioral model theory was applied, and predisposing, enabling, and individual factors were determined to be variables. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to analyze the determinants of national hospital choice factors. It was found that the rate of use of national hospitals was very low, with 5.23% for hospitalization services. Furthermore, socioeconomically vulnerable people, such as the elderly, low-income people, the national meritorious and medical care beneficiaries, chronic patients, and disabled patients are more likely to choose national hospitals than private hospitals. Therefore, for the appropriate management of medical service use for low-income vulnerable groups, it is necessary to discuss the enhancement of primary medical care in national healthcare.

  • The present study identified the factors of economic retirement preparation for people living with disabilities using the Andersen's behavioral model. The 2012 Disabled Employment Panel Survey data were collected from May 21, 2012 to July 31, 2012 and were analyzed by applying the SPSS 20 program. Logistic regression analysis was carried out on a sample of 2,869 people aged 30 to 60 years. The predisposing factors (education, marital status), possibility factors (employment, non-basic livelihood security recipient status, homeowner status, income), and desire factors (subjective socioeconomic status, life satisfaction, self-esteem) affected the retirement preparation. To help people living with disabilities, policies and programs based on the factors that reflect the individual needs must be established.

  • In this study, we deals with the implementation of an optimal basis identification procedure for interior point methods. Our implementation is based on Megiddo’s strongly polynomial algorithm applied to Andersen and Ye’s approximate LP construction. Several techniques are explained such as the use of effective indicator for obtaining optimal partition when constructing the approximate LP, the efficient implementation of the problem reduction technique proposed by Andersen, the crashing procedure needed for fast dual phase of Megiddo’s algorithm and the construction of the stable initial basis. By experimental comparison, we show that our implementation is superior to the crossover scheme implementation.

  • This paper introduces the mix design and performance evaluation of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC). The concrete mixture is designed to achieve a densely compacted cementitious matrix via the modified Andreasen & Andersen particle packing model. The compressive strengths of UHPC designed by this method reached 154MPa. The relationship between packing theory and compressive strength of UHPC is discussed in this paper.

  • This study examined the factors affecting the preference for the elderly's mental health services utilization in rural areas. A behavior model developed by Andersen and Newman provided an analytical framework to determine the factors affecting service utilization preferences among 335 elderly people as research subjects. The authors found that the preferences for mental health service utilization were significantly related to the level of education, living alone, presence of grandchildren, participation in social activities, and recognition about the services. Based on the findings, this study suggests that more mental health services for the elderly in rural areas be further developed and strengthened. Also, the elderly who lives alone and lives with grandchildren should have a priority in policy consideration. Multiple approaches are suggested to increase the awareness of mental health services and participation social activities for those older people.

  • The purpose of this research is to determine elements affecting the out-of-pocket cost of woman. The sample consisted of 1907 women living Iksan city. The survey was conducted by means of questionnaires. The model used in the analysis of out-of-pocket cost was the Andersen-Newman model, while the analysis techniques used were stepwise multiple regression and path analysis. The number of independent variables used in the analysis was 28 in total, ie 19 predisposing components, 6 enabling components, and 3 need components. In this study, the amount of variance by the model was 17 percent. Number of restricted activity days caused by oral disease, perceived susceptibility of dental disease, having a regular dental care, dental treatment costs, education level and income were found to have significant major effects on out-of-pocket cost. Number of restricted activity days caused by oral disease was the most important variable affecting out-of-pocket cost of woman. Also out-of-pocket cost shows larger effect due to enabling components than frequency of dental utilization.
