Analysis of Characterization on Ancient Ink Stick (고대 먹의 특성 분석)

  • In this work, scientific and systematic analysis was conducted for finding out the methods and techniques of ancient ink stick making. Analysis the ancient ink stick on ancient documents and wooden writing as letter or painting, we concluded as followings. From the analysis of ancient wood by dendrochronology, wood was cut at 1899, which provided the information on the year of ink stick's made on writing on ancient wood. Single particle size for soot of ancient ink stick was 107 nm for ink on the roof-filling timber in Sinsunwonjeon of Changdeok Palace, compared to 38 to 86 nm on the letter on ancient 12 paper document. Aggregate particle size was 370 nm for ink on the roof-filling timber in Sinsunwonjeon of Changdeok Palace, but 206 to 318 nm for aggregate particle size on 12 paper documents. There was similar pattern between single particle size and aggregate particle size of soot, which might provide the information of raw material for ancient ink. From infra-red and Raman spectroscopic analysis of sheet of writing on paper or wood, there was severe interference from background material (paper or wood). From Raman spectroscopic analysis of ancient ink carefully separated from ancient wood, spectrum pattern was closer to ink stick made by the soot from pine burning.

  • Hanji is a traditional handmade paper, which has been famous for its excellent qualities in strength, whiteness, gloss, and smooth feel in painting and writing in ancient Far East for many years. Nowadays, however, its old fame has declined and it has been used only in limited extent such as in traditional Korean brush painting and writing. In this study, 9 kinds of commercial handmade papers made in Korea, China, and Japan were collected and their printing and writing properties were evaluated by image analysis. Chinese handmade paper showed the best result in absorption area of China ink, the roundness and feathering of China ink blots, followed by Hanji. Abrasion coefficient of the Chineses papers was higher than that of the others, which was regarded to contribute to the difference in touch feeling of the writing brush on the papers. It was shown that absorption rate and blot area of China ink were increased by Dochim. Hanji which has recently been made by so called \"traditional method\" showed no quality difference from the modified Hanji.ied Hanji.

  • Costume of each age reflects its own history. Military costume is an reflections of war, social and geometrical background. Soldiers on their uniforms were at the battlefields with their lives and country on their shoulders. The main purpose of this writing is to study military costume of ancient empires in historical Point of view including especially those of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Crete, Greece, Etruria, Rome. As we will see, ancient military costume developed from earlier stages of uniforms into military costume in various ways. The types of military costume formed itself gradually but rapidly into sophisticated, useful, and excellent quality clothes. Military costume of early ancient empires signified its strength and were actual and symbolic costume that determined life and death, glory and disgrace.

Interpretation of Coloring Materials Recorded in Ceremonial Writing of the Hanging Painting of Chiljangsa Temple (Five Buddhas) (칠장사 오불회 괘불탱 화기에 기록된 채색 재료의 해석)

  • This study aimed to interpret the coloring materials recorded in the ceremonial writing with the scientific investigation results of the Hanging Painting of the Chiljangsa Temple (Five Buddhas). The results confirm that the Jinboon, Joohong, Hwangdan, Hwanggeum and Seokjahwang are clearly connected to lead white, cinnabar, minium, gold, and orpiment, respectively. Danghayeop and samrok are related to Copper trihydroxychloride, while Daecheong and Joongcheong are azurite, and they seems to be classified by the particle size. Yeonji and Chunghwa are organic dyes in red and blue, respectively, with blue confirming the existence of the side, but Yeonji differs from the names of the ancient texts and Chinese characters; it is unclear whether it is a commonly used Yeonji because of differences in the names of the ancient texts. The presence of Sootohwang has not been confirmed in the gwaebultaeng, but it can be extracted from the soil as a yellow-colored material but the possibility of Deunghwang cannot be ruled out.

  • The writing systems of the Silla dynasty, the Kugyol(口訣), had influenced the earlier states of Japanes Kunten(假片) during the 8th century. Japanese developed their own writing system, Kunten(訓点) after the 9th century. The Silla Kugyol was inscribed by Gagpil(角筆), a kind of ancient stylus, which seems to be originated in China and India. There are two main streams of Asian script culture. One is from China: a brush-pen culture for East asian calligraphy, named Seoye(書藝) or Seodo(書道). The other is from India: a tusk-pen culture for inscribing Buddha's words. In Korean peninsular, we can find the traces from Buddist texts inscribed by the Gagpil, a tusk-pen. We can find new writing system in the books of the Silla, penod, Panbilyanglon(判比量論), Hwaeommuneuiyogyol(華嚴文義要訣) etc. The scripts inscribed by gagpil was a totally phonetic system with dots and lines etc., like Hangul strokes was invented by I king Sejong 800 years later. The old system was used until 15th century before the invention of Hangul scripts.

  • This study investigated the formation of communication education which is based on the contemporary language education. Concretely I watched chronologically the proportion of culture element and behavior element, its change, and the contents of writing education. To achieve this, I took the ancient Greek language education as the main materials. The sophists are right if we think only the empirical world, because of the changeability of external world and the relativity of sense. On the other hand, Platon emphasized the ability of abstract thought which is inherent in the human inside. But today's education only emphasizes the 'expression' which came from the Platonic thought. So students fills their devastated inside with arbitrary idea in this history-forgotten social circumstance. It is very beneficial to make subject have some cultural studies and to enhance the sensation on the world through the writing of representation because these can be good to the growth of subject. It is our-not as educator but as a predecessor of human being-duty to set the catalogue of cultural studies of this age and to make students feel the fundamental harmony and the beauty of the world.

A Study on the Lost Ancient Medical Book "Yunbang" (일실 의학문헌 "윤방"의 문헌적 고찰)

  • This study analyzed the various aspects in writing the lost ancient medical book Yunbang, whose title listed on no other catalogs. And examined the bibiiographical properties of Yunbang by analyzing and comparing the citations collected from the book Sanlirngyoungiae. Yunbang, the collective empirical prescriptions of native medicines, is supposed to be made by the Yun families during the period of from the mid 17th to the early part of 18th centuries.

A Study of Names Used on Seals in the Age of Civil Wars in China (중국전국시대 인장(印章)에 반영된 인명 특징 연구)

  • The "Name" is not only representative of a person but also a cultural heritage containing national cultures. Therefore, we can easily find some cultural value from the square inch sized seal texts. This article is a comprehensive study of the characteristics of names appeared on the seals in the Warring States Period. In the Warring States Period, single name is generally used for naming and this style can be divided into 13 categories. Except unavoidable cases, such as using the name of place, the name of person or the reason of physical characteristics, using double name is very rare and this style can be categorized by 8 kinds. In result, using double name is defined as a fringe method of naming in the Warring States Period. In addition, we can find a big difference between the names of Warring States Period and those of Post-Qin and Han Dynasties in the structural aspects. In conclusion, understanding of the characteristics of names from the Warring States Period can be a great help to better understanding of ancient books and unearthed documents.

  • Far from being a recent world, the concept of "a [one] world" did slowly emerged in a post-prehistoric Antiquity. The actual knowledge of the world increased through millennia leaving aside large continents (Americas, part of Africa, Australia, etc.-most areas without written history), and writing history in Antiquity cannot be a synchronal presentation of the most ancient times of these areas. Through a few case studies dealing with texts, archaeology and history itself mostly in BCE times, the paper will try to perceive the slow building-up of a physical awareness and 'moral' consciousness of the known world by people of the Middle East (e.g. the Bible, Gilgamesh) and the Mediterranean (mainly Greeks).

  • The research object of this paper is "Yi" and "Yi" in ancient calligraphy theory, as an aesthetic category with oriental characteristics, from Laozhuang philosophy of pre-Qin Dynasty to literature field of literature.The second chapter describes the emergence and development of the concept of "Yi", which has evolved into two concepts in ancient calligraphy and painting theory, namely, the concept of "Yi".In the third chapter, "Yi" is mainly used as an adjective to describe the speed, power and strength of writing, and in the fourth chapter, "Yi" is used to describe the writer's character.Based on the study of ancient sages' calligraphy, this paper attempts to explore the inner spirit of "Yi" and to systematically analyze and summarize the theory of calligraphy and painting.
