  • In this paper, wave energy absorption of OWC(oscillating water column) device is analyzed. The analytic model consists of a partially immersed circular vertical cylinder open at its end and an air turbine connected with the air chamber. The boundary value problem is decomposed into scattering problem related to scattering by an incident wave in the absence of a pressure variation and radiation problem describing the flow due to an oscillating pressure in the absence of an incident wave. By invoking the continuity of an air flow inside the chamber, the oscillating pressure in a chamber is derived. With oscillating pressure, the mean power absorbed by OWC device and the capture width are obtained. In numerical calculation, the induced volume flux across the internal free surface of the chamber in the scattering and radiation problem and the maximum capture width are compared with various design parameters such as radius and submergence depth of chamber and wave conditions. The maximum capture width obtained by choosing the optimal value of turbine constant occurs at the first resonant mode (Helmholtz mode) among the natural frequencies of a circular cylinder chamber.

  • Optical properties and color analysis of nacreous layers were performed using various pearl shells. The cross section and microstructure of the surface in each nacreous layers were observed through a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), and the diffraction pattern on SEM images was analyzed using FFT (Fast Fourier Transform). Through these analysises, it was verified that the color and optical characteristics are closely related to the structure of nacreous layers. Incident angle-dependent reflection spectrum was used to examine the phenomena of color differenceas the direction of observation. Quantified values on the color change were obtained by CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color scale. Using this research, database for the characteristics of natural pearl shells can be established, and the precise analytic method for observation of pearl shells was suggested.

  • We developed a precise terrain correction program using triangular element method (TEM) for microgravity data processing. TEM calculates gravity attraction of arbitrary polyhedra whose surface is patched by triangles. We showed that TEM can calculate more precise terrain effect than conventional rectangular prism method. We tested the accuracy of TEM on the cone model which has analytic solution. Also, we tested the accuracy of TEM on the slope model, this results showed that there are big differences calculated by TEM and rectangular prsim method (RPM) on slope model. The developed terrain correction program was applied on the gravity data on the southern area near sea shore of Korean peninsula, calculated terrain effect very precisely.

  • Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) is being developed to do maritime survey and maritime surveillance at Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean engineering (KRISO). The goal is that USV should be operated at the maximum speed of 45 knots and it should be operated at sea state 4. Therefore the planing hull of USV should be excellent in resistance performance and manoeuvring performance. It is needed to check its performance using Experimental Fluid Dynamics (EFD), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or analytic method before designing the hull. In this study, resistance performance was analyzed by EFD and CFD. EFD with heave and pitch was performed at high speed towing system in Seoul National University. CFD was performed using SNUFOAM based on openFOAM with dynamic mesh to calculate running attitudes. The results of CFD were compared with EFD results. The results of CFD were resistance, running attitudes and wave height. The flow distribution and pressure distribution were also analyzed. The results of numerical resistance was under estimated than EFD. Even though the results of CFD have a slight limitation, it can be successfully used to estimate the resistance performance of planing hull. In addition it can be used as a supplement for EFD results.

  • The land surface parameters should be determined with sufficient accuracy, because these play an important role in climate change near the ground. As the surface reflectance presents strong anisotropy, off-nadir viewing results a strong dependency of observations on the Sun - target - sensor geometry. They contribute to the random noise which is produced by surface angular effects. The principal objective of the study is to provide a database of accurate surface reflectance eliminated the angular effects from MODIS 250m reflective channel data over Korea. The MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) sensor has provided visible and near infrared channel reflectance at 250m resolution on a daily basis. The successive analytic processing steps were firstly performed on a per-pixel basis to remove cloudy pixels. And for the geometric distortion, the correction process were performed by the nearest neighbor resampling using 2nd-order polynomial obtained from the geolocation information of MODIS Data set. In order to correct the surface anisotropy effects, this paper attempted the semiempirical kernel-driven Bi- directional Reflectance Distribution Function(BRDF) model. The algorithm yields an inversion of the kernel-driven model to the angular components, such as viewing zenith angle, solar zenith angle, viewing azimuth angle, solar azimuth angle from reflectance observed by satellite. First we consider sets of the model observations comprised with a 31-day period to perform the BRDF model. In the next step, Nadir view reflectance normalization is carried out through the modification of the angular components, separated by BRDF model for each spectral band and each pixel. Modeled reflectance values show a good agreement with measured reflectance values and their RMSE(Root Mean Square Error) was totally about 0.01(maximum=0.03). Finally, we provide a normalized surface reflectance database consisted of 36 images for 2001 over Korea.

  • A numerical model has been developed by employing a finite element method to simulate the depth-averaged 2-D dispersion of the heat pollutant, which is an important pollutant material in natural streams. Among the finite element methods, the Streamline Upwind/Petrov Galerkin (SUPG) method was applied. Also both linear and quadratic elements can be applied so that irregular river boundaries can be easily represented. To show the movement of heat pollutants, the reaction term describing heat transfer was represented as an equation in which sink/source term is proportional to the difference between the equilibrium temperature and water surface temperature. The equation was expressed so that the water surface temperature changes according to the temperature transfer coefficient and the equilibrium temperature. For the calibration of the model developed, analytic and numerical results from a case of rectangular channel with full width continuous injection have been compared in a steady state. The comparisons showed that the numerical results were in good agreement with analytical solutions. The application site was selected from the downstream of Paldang dam to Jamsil submerged weir, and overall length of this site is about 22.5 km. The change of water temperature caused by the discharge from the Guri sewage treatment plant has been simulated, and results were similar to the observed data. Overall it is concluded that the developed model can represent the water temperature changes due to heat transport accurately. But the verification using observed data will further enhance the validity of the model.

  • A numerical method is developed to solve a two-dimensional diffraction problem for a body located in a sediment pocket where a heavier muddy water is trapped. In the present study, the wave exciting forces acting on a submerged body in the water-sediment interface by an incident wave is investigate. It is assumed that the heavier mud is trapped locally in a sediment pocket. A mathematical formulation is made in the scope of the potential theory. The fluid is assumed to be inviscid, incompressible and its motion irrotational. The boundary conditions on the unknown free surface and interface are linearized. As a method of solution, the localized finite-element method is adopted. In the method, the computation domain is reduced by utilizing the complete set of analytic solutions known in the infinite subdomain to be truncated by introduction of an appropriate juncture conditions. The main advantage of this method is that any complex geometry of the boundaries can be easily accommodated. Computations are carried out for mono-chromatic plane progressive surface waves normally incident on the domain. Numerical results are compared with those obtained by Lassiter based on Schwingers variational method. Good Agreements are obtained in general. Another numerical computations are made for the cases with and without a body in the sediment pocket.

  • Large scale superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system requires very high magnetic energy density in its superconducting coils to enhance the energy capacity and efficiency of the system. The recent high temperature superconducting (HTS) conductors, so called 2G conductors, show very good performance under very high magnetic field so that they seem to be perfect materials for the large scale SMES coils. A general shape of the coil system with the 2G HTS conductor has been a tor oid, because the magnetic field applied perpendicularly to the surface of the 2G HTS conductor could be minimized in this shape of coil. However, a toroid coil requires a 3-dimensional computation to acquire the characteristics of its critical current density - magnetic field relations which needs very complicated numerical calculation, very high computer specification, and long calculation time. In this paper, we suggested an analytic and statistical calculation method to acquire the maximum magnetic flux density applied perpendicularly to the surface of the 2G HTS conductor and the stored energy in the toroid coil system. Although the result with this method includes some errors but we could reduce these errors within 5 percent to get a reasonable estimation of the important parameters for design process of the HTS toroid coil system. As a result, the calculation time by the suggested method could be reduced to 0.1 percent of that by the 3-dimensional numerical calculation.

  • Glycans are attached to proteins as in glycoproteins and proteoglycans. They are found on the exterior surface of cells. O- and N-linked glycans are very common in eukaryotic cells but may also be found in prokaryotes. The interaction of cell surface glycans with complementary glycan binding proteins located on neighboring cells, other cell types, pathogens like virus, or bacteria is crucial in biologically and biomedically important processes like pathogen recognition, cell migration, cell-cell adhesion, development, and infection. Their implication in pathological condition, suggests an important role for glycans as disease markers. In addition, a great amount of research has been shown that appropriate glycosylation of a recombinant therapeutic protein is critical for product solubility, stability, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, bioactivity, and safety. Besides, cancer-associated glycosylation changes often involve sialic acid in glycan branch which play important roles in cell-cell interaction, recognition and immunological response. This review aims at giving a comprehensive overview of the glycan's biological function and describing the relevance among the glycosylation, disease diagnosis and treatment methods. Furthermore, the high-throughput analytic methods available to measure the profile changing patterns of glycan in the blood serum as well as possible underlying biochemical mechanisms.

  • The 20 L small chamber test method is to evaluate pollutants such as TVOC, formaldehyde emitted from building materials. This method was only designed to evaluate the surface emission of sample exposed in the chamber. In this method, building materials cut with a fixed standard size are fixed in a sample sealing box. The sample sealing box is put into the 20 L test chamber. This chamber is ventilated at a standard air change rate with purified air for 7 days then the sample from the chamber is collected and analyzed to measure the emission rate of TVOC and formaldehyde. In this method, however, if the sealing box does not guarantee airtightness, accurate evaluation for the building materials can not be achieved due to the pollutants emitted from edge of the sample so called, edge effect. This edge effect can be much greater when evaluating panels such as plywood, flooring due to their surface treatment. In this study, flooring was tested to check airtightness of the sample sealing box with analytic results between 1L and 20 L test chamber. Furniture materials like LPM coated one side surface treatment and MDF coated both sides surface treatment with LPM were tested to identify whether the improvement of the sample sealing box airtightness is possible with the comparison between existing and improved test method that low VOC emission tape was used to seal the sample edge. After 7 days, MDF TVOC emission rate was different according to the existence and nonexistence of tape. The emission rate of the existing test method was $0.009mg/m^2h$ and that of improved test method was $0.003mg/m^2h$. Relative standard deviation for the existing test method was $0.004mg/m^2h$ and relative standard deviation for the improved test method was $0.002mg/m^2h$ when the same sample was analyzed three times. The improved test method in this study using low VOC emission tape was effective and able to reduce the heterogeneous effect of the edge from the sample sealing box.
