  • This study explores the integration of the generative AI, specifically ChatGPT (GPT-4o), into the field of structural analysis and design using the finite element method (FEM). The research is conducted in two main parts: structural analysis and structural design. For structural analysis, two scenarios are examined: one where the FEM source code is provided to ChatGPT and one where it is not. The AI's ability to understand, process, and accurately perform finite element analysis in both scenarios is evaluated. Additionally, the application of ChatGPT in structural design is investigated, including design modifications and parameter sensitivity analysis. The results demonstrate the potential of the generative AI to assist in complex engineering tasks, suggesting a future where AI significantly enhances efficiency and innovation in structural engineering. However, the study also highlights the importance of ensuring the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated results, particularly in safety-critical applications.

  • In this study, the numerical code for the 3D nonlinear dynamic analysis of an SLWR (Steel Lazy Wave Riser) was developed using the lumped mass line model in a FORTRAN environment. Because the lumped mass line model is an explicit method, there is no matrix operation. Thus, the numerical algorithm is simple and fast. In the lumped mass line model, the equations of motion for the riser were derived by applying the various forces acting on each node of the line. The applied forces at the node of the riser consisted of the tension, shear force due to the bending moment, gravitational force, buoyancy force, riser/ground contact force, and hydrodynamic force based on the Morison equation. Time integration was carried out using a Runge-Kutta fourth-order method, which is known to be stable and accurate. To validate the accuracy of the developed numerical code, simulations using the commercial software OrcaFlex were carried out simultaneously and compared with the results of the developed numerical code. To understand the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of an SLWR, dynamic simulations of SLWRs excited at the hang-off point and of SLWRs in regular waves were carried out. From the results of these dynamic simulations, the displacements at the maximum bending moments at important points of the design, like the hang-off point, sagging point, hogging points, and touch-down point, were observed and analyzed.

  • In this study, a numerical method is developed for nonlinear analysis for soil-pile-structure interaction system in time domain. Finite elements considering material nonlinearity are used for the near field and boundary elements for the far field. In the near field, frame elements are used for modeling a pile and plane-strain elements for surrounding soil and superstructure. In. the far field, boundary element formulation using the dynamic fundamental solution is adopted and coupled with the near field. Transformation of stiffness matrices of boundary elements into time domain is performed by inverse FFT. Stiffness matrices in the near field and far field are coupled. Newmark direct time integration method is applied. Developed soil-pile-structure interaction analysis method is verified with available literature and commercial code. Also, parametric studies by developed numerical method are performed. And seismic response analysis is performed using actual earthquake records.

  • A CAD-based seamless design system for MEMS named DS/MEMS was developed which performs coupled-field analysis, optimal and robust design. DS/MEMS has been developed by means of integrating commercial codes and inhouse code-SolidWorks, FEMAP, ANSYS and CA/MEMS. This strategy results in versatility that means to include various analysis model, corresponding analyses and approximated design sensitivity analysis and user friendliness that design variables are taken to be selectable directly from a CAD model, that the problem is formulated under a window environment and that the manual job during optimization process is almost eliminated. DS/MEMS works on a parametric CAD platform, integrating CAD modeling, analysis, and optimization. Nonlinear programming algorithms, the Taguchi method, and response surface method are made available for optimization. One application problem is taken to illustrate the proposed methodology and show the feasibility of DS/MEMS as a practical tool.

  • This study presents a stability analysis procedure for caisson structures and a case study for a honeycomb slit-caisson. CADMAS-SURF was used to calculate the wave pressures based on an irregular wave with a 50-year period and the data for three regular waves obtained from a target site. Then, the irregular and regular wave pressures were used to obtain the dynamic responses (stresses) of the caisson structure using an explicit time integration program, ANSYS/LS-DYNA. Finally, the DNV code was used for structural and fatigue stability analyses.

  • In the concrete structures, cracks occur in various causes and the cracks seriously affect the functions of structures. The analysis techniques of progressive crack in the concrete have been improved with the advance of numerical techniques. The discrete crack model used in finite element program for the analysis of progressive failure is very effective, but it can not be easily implemented into numerical procedures because of difficult handing of nodal points in finite element meshes for crack growth. This paper introduces one of the techniques which skips the difficulty. In this paper, the modeling of progressive failure using finite element formulation is explained for the analysis of concrete fracture. The discontinuous element using the discontinuous shape function and the dual mapping technique in the numerical integration are implemented into finite element code for this purpose. It is shown that developed finite element program can predict the quasi-brittle behavior of concrete including ultimate load. The comparisons of the analysis results with other data are also shown.

  • This paper describes a robust mobile u-healthcare system with multiple physiological signs measurement capability in real time with integration of WSN(wireless sensor network) technology and CDMA(code division multiple access) network. A cellular phone receives health data in WSN and performs local physiological signs analysis at a phone processor, and then transmits abnormal data to server for further detail or precise health signal evaluation by a medical doctor over a CDMA network. Physiological signs of the patients are continuously monitored, processed and analyzed locally at cellular phone process to produce useful medical information for diagnosis and tracking purposes. By local simple analysis in cellular phone processor we can save the data transmission cost in CDMA network. By using the developed integrate ubiquitous healthcare service architecture, patients can realize self-health checking so that the prevention actions can be taken earlier. Appropriate self-monitoring and self-management can cure disease and relieve pain especially for patients who suffer from chronic diseases that need long term observation.

  • A systems biology approach for the identification of perturbed molecular functions is required to understand the complex progressive disease such as breast cancer. In this study, we analyze the microarray data with Gene Ontology terms of molecular functions to select perturbed molecular functional modules in breast cancer tissues based on the definition of Gene ontology Functional Code. The Gene Ontology is three structured vocabularies describing genes and its products in terms of their associated biological processes, cellular components and molecular functions. The Gene Ontology is hierarchically classified as a directed acyclic graph. However, it is difficult to visualize Gene Ontology as a directed tree since a Gene Ontology term may have more than one parent by providing multiple paths from the root. Therefore, we applied the definition of Gene Ontology codes by defining one or more GO code(s) to each GO term to visualize the hierarchical classification of GO terms as a network. The selected molecular functions could be considered as perturbed molecular functional modules that putatively contributes to the progression of disease. We evaluated the method by analyzing microarray dataset of breast cancer tissues; i.e., normal and invasive breast cancer tissues. Based on the integration approach, we selected several interesting perturbed molecular functions that are implicated in the progression of breast cancers. Moreover, these selected molecular functions include several known breast cancer-related genes. It is concluded from this study that the present strategy is capable of selecting perturbed molecular functions that putatively play roles in the progression of diseases and provides an improved interpretability of GO terms based on the definition of Gene Ontology codes.

  • For Safety Assisted Engineering works, real-time simulators have emerged as a mandatory tool among all the key actors involved in the nuclear industry (utilities, designers and safety authorities). EDF, Electricité de France, as the leading worldwide nuclear power plant operator, has a crucial need for efficient and updated simulation tools for training, operating and safety analysis support. This paper will present the work performed at EDF/DT to develop a new generation of engineering simulator to fulfil these tasks. The project is called SiRENE, which is the acronym of Re-hosted Engineering Simulator in French. The project has been economically challenging. Therefore, to benefit from existing tools and experience, the SiRENE project combines: - A part of the process issued from the operating fleet training full-scope simulator. - An improvement of the simulator prediction reliability with the integration of High-Fidelity models, used in Safety Analysis. These High-Fidelity models address Nuclear Steam Supply System code, with CATHARE thermal-hydraulics system code and neutronics, with COCCINELLE code. - And taking advantage of the last generation and improvements of instructor station. The intensive and challenging uses of the new SiRENE engineering simulator are also discussed. The SiRENE simulator has to address different topics such as verification and validation of operating procedures, identification of safety paths, tests of I&C developments or modifications, tests on hydraulics system components (pump, valve etc.), support studies for Probabilistic Safety Analysis (PSA). etc. It also emerges that SiRENE simulator is a valuable tool for self-training of the newcomers in EDF nuclear engineering centers. As a modifiable tool and thanks to a skillful team managing the SiRENE project, specific and adapted modifications can be taken into account very quickly, in order to provide the best answers for our users' specific issues. Finally, the SiRENE simulator, and the associated configurations, has been distributed among the different engineering centers at EDF (DT in Lyon, DIPDE in Marseille and CNEPE in Tours). This distribution highlights a strong synergy and complementarity of the different engineering institutes at EDF, working together for a safer and a more profitable operating fleet.
