Models and Modeling Behavior: A Look at the Critical Thinking Skills of Biology Majors

  • This paper describes the types of models that biology majors use and how they go about making their models in learning key concepts in biology such as the cell membrane, cytoskeleton and cell structure. Initially, a total of 44 biology students from all year levels enrolled in the second semester of calendar year 2008-2009 were asked to make their respective models of the cell membrane, cytoskeleton and cell structure. They were also asked to answer an open-ended questionnaire. Of the 44, only 20 (five from each year level) were randomly selected for a one-on-one interview. Results showed that the student-generated models from all year levels were mostly analogies, some textbook definitions and occasional drawings. In making their model, students first read the text; second, outline similarities in structure and function or both; and third, make the model. Data suggest that models are good diagnostic tools for identifying critical thinking skills of students. In this case, students mostly demonstrate the ability to recognize similarities in structure and function between the concept and their model. Some senior students demonstrated integration and reflective thinking in making their models. Thus, more opportunities for student-generated models must be available if students were to develop integration and reflective thinking in their models.

Biologically Inspired Node Scheduling Control for Wireless Sensor Networks

  • Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are generally comprised of densely deployed sensor nodes, which results in highly redundant sensor data transmissions and energy waste. Since the sensor nodes depend on batteries for energy, previous studies have focused on designing energy-efficient medium access control (MAC) protocols to extend the network lifetime. However, the energy-efficient protocols induce an extra end-to-end delay, and therefore recent increase in focus on WSNs has led to timely and reliable communication protocols for mission-critical applications. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient and delay guaranteeing node scheduling scheme inspired by biological systems, which have gained considerable attention as a computing and problem solving technique.With the identification of analogies between cellular signaling systems and WSN systems, we formulate a new mathematical model that considers the networking challenges of WSNs. The proposed bio-inspired algorithm determines the state of the sensor node, as required by each application and as determined by the local environmental conditions and the states of the adjacent nodes. A control analysis shows that the proposed bio-inspired scheme guarantees the system stability by controlling the parameters of each node. Simulation results also indicate that the proposed scheme provides significant energy savings, as well as reliable delay guarantees by controlling the states of the sensor nodes.

수평 상향 분사 덕트를 이용한 컨테이너선 화물창 환기 개선에 대한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study Improving Ventilation of Container Ship Hold Using Horizontal Upward Jet Duct)

  • The ventilation performance for the various venting duct arrays has been experimentally compared in the scaled model of the container hold. Most container ships have the ventilation duct system to remove effectively the condensing heat released from container refrigerator. The existing duct system is vertically installed and basically has the number of duct as many as the columns of reefer container stack. In this study, to make up for the weak points having stagnantly hot legions in the centered area of container hold for the present system, the horizontal upward jotting duct system was proposed and proved by temperature rising tests on the scaled model. In this paper, the expected flow regimes and the thermal and hydrodynamic analogies as well as the measured temperature distributions in a hold for various duct types and heat released rates are deeply discussed.

제7차 중등 과학 교과서의 화학 영역에 사용된 비유 분석 (The Analysis of Analogies in Chemistry Content of Secondary School Science Textbooks Based on the 7th National Curriculum)

  • 제7차 교육과정에 따른 중등 과학 교과서 중 화학 영역에 사용된 비유를 분석하였다. 전체 35권의 교과서에서 비유 사용 빈도는 325회로 13쪽마다 평균 1회 사용되었고, 단 한 번만 사용된 비유가 많았다. 유형별로는 기능적 비유, 언어와 그림을 모두 사용한 비유, 추상적 목표물을 구체적 비유물로 설명한 비유, 단순 비유와 부연 비유, 교사 중심 비유, 체계성이 낮은 비유가 많았고, 일상 비유와 작위적 비유가 비슷하게 사용되었다. 교과서 본문 중에 '비유‘라는 용어를 사용한 경우는 적었으며, 제한점에 대한 언급은 거의 없었다. 제6차 교육과정에 따른 과학 교과서에 비하여 쪽 당 비유의 수는 증가하였으나, 표현 방식, 작위성, 학습자 참여성을 제외한 모든 유형에서 비슷한 경향을 나타내었다. 이 결과들에 대한 교육적 시사점을 논의하였다.

Co-evolutionary Design of Team Level Play in Soccer Server

  • Recently, RoboCup soccer simulation has been regarded as a good benchmark problem for multiagent researches. Soccer agents have to make decision based on visual and auditory information, which are sent from the soccer server. In order to develop a strong team, we have to design decision-making process of each player agent. However, it is very difficult for us to design the decision-making processes in detail, because we don't know what actions of each player are effective for the team. In this paper, we attempt to apply co-evolutionary method, which is one type of analogies of evolution, to improve the team play. Agents have hand coded basic skills, which include dribble, shoot, pass etc. Agents already can play autonomously and independently. Individual agent skills are characterized by some parameters. By coevolving teams with these parameters, we obtained relatively interesting teams, in which players behave cooperatively in order to win the soccer game. From some experiments, we discuss what teams are evolved.

캐비테이션 환경에서의 액체로켓엔진용 연료펌프의 고주파 신호 분석 (High Frequency Signal Analysis of Fuel Pump for Liquid Rocket Engine under Cavitating Condition)

  • 액체로켓엔진용 연료펌프의 캐비테이션 시험 중 입출구 배관과 펌프 케이싱에서 계측된 고주파 신호를 분석하였다. 각각의 데이터의 RMS 값을 캐비테이션 수에 따라 표현하였다. 측정 결과는 산화제펌프의 결과와 비교하였으며, 캐비테이션 불안정성의 영향도 검토하였다. 산화제펌프와 연료펌프 고주파 신호 사이에 유사성이 확인되었다. 또한, 캐비테이션 불안정성은 연료펌프 출구 배관 압력섭동에 영향을 주었다.

과학수업에서 Thinking Maps의 효과적인 활용 방안 (Effective Educational Use of Thinking Maps in Science Instruction)

  • The purpose of this study is finding examine the Thinking Maps and how to use Thinking Maps effectively in Science Education. The result of this study were as follows: First, There are 8 type Maps, Circle Map, Tree Maps, Bubble Map, Double Bubble Map, Flow Map, Multi Flow Map, Brace Map, Bridge Map. Each Maps are useful in the following activities ; Circle Map-Express their thoughts. Tree Map-Activities as like determine the structure, classification, information organization. Bubble Maps-Construction. Double Bubble Map-Comparison of similarities and differences. Flow Map-Set goals, determine the result of changes in time or place. Multi Flow Map-Analysis cause and effect, expectation and reasoning. Brace Map-Analysis whole and part. Bridge Map-Activities need analogies. Second, each element of inquiry has 1~2 appropriate type of Thinking Maps. So student can choose the desired map. Third, the result of analysing of Science Curriculum Subjects, depending on the subject variety maps can be used. Therefore the Thinking Maps can be used for a variety on activities and subject. And student can be selected according to their learning style. So Thinking Maps are effective to improve student's Self-Directed Learning.

Jo Jeongsan in Context: "Second Founders" in New Religious Movements

  • Scholars of new religious movements have emphasized the role of "second founders," such as Judge J.F. Rutherford for the Jehovah's Witnesses, Brigham Young for the Mormons, or Deguchi Onisaburo for Oomoto. They systematize and structure movements often created by the "first founders" with a minimal organization only. The paper argues that the model for the sequence first founder/second founder described by these scholars is the relationship between Jesus and Paul of Tarsus at the origins of Christianity. It proposes a comparison between Jesus of Nazareth and Kang Jeungsan, who established the tradition leading to present-day Daesoon Jinrihoe. It then summarizes the biography of Jo Jeongsan, recognized by Daesoon Jinrihoe as its "second founder" within the same tradition, and discusses the analogies between his connection to the "first founder," Kang Jeungsan, and the connection Paul of Tarsus established with Jesus Christ. The paper considers recent scholarship about Paul, often described as the "New Perspective on Pauline Scholarship." Paul never personally met Jesus Christ, except after the latter's death through a spiritual revelation, just as Jo Jeongsan never met Kang Jeungsan, except after his death, when he manifested himself to him in spirit. Nonetheless, Paul was able to decisively shape the largest branch among the followers of Jesus Christ, just as Jo Jeongsan originated the lineage leading to Daesoon Jinrihoe, currently the largest religious order among those recognizing Kang Jeungsan as the incarnated Supreme God.

학문 통합적 비유를 활용한 창의적 문제 해결력 지향 대학교 화학 실험 수업 전략의 개발 및 효과 (제II보) (Development of Teaching Strategy Using Inter-Disciplinary Analogy to Enhance Students' Creative Problem Solving Skills and Examination of Its Effectiveness (II))

  • 이 연구의 목적은 학문 통합적 비유를 활용한 창의적 문제해결력 지향 수업 전략을 개발하고 이 전략이 학생들의 창의적 사고력, 비판적 사고력, 창의적 인성, 학업적 자기 조절에 미치는 효과를 알아보는 것이다. 이를 위하여 기존의 창의적 문제 해결력 지향 탐구 수업 모형에 비유 활동의 PDCA 네 단계 모형을 활용한 '학문 통합적 비유를 활용한 창의적 문제 해결력 지향 탐구 수업 모형'을 개발하여 이 모형에 따라 구체적인 대학교 화학 실험 수업 전략을 개발하였다. 그리고 예비 과학 교사를 대상으로 개발한 수업 전략을 한 학기 동안 실시하였다. 그 결과 문제 인식 및 가설 설정, 가설 설정, 변인 통제 영역에서 창의적 사고력 하위 범주 중 독창성이 유의미하게 향상되었다. 또한, 문제 인식 및 가설 설정, 자료 해석 및 자료 변환의 영역에서 비판적 사고력이 향상된 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 학업적 자기 조절에 대해서는 확인된 조절과 통합된 조절에서 유의미한 차이를 나타냈다. 그러나 창의적 인성에 대해서는 모든 하위 영역에 대하여 유의미한 차이가 나타나지 않았다.

Purification and Characterization of a Thermostable Xylose (Glucose) Isomerase from Streptomyces chibaensis J-59

  • Xylose (glucose) isomerase was purified to homogeneity from cell-extracts of Streptomyces chibaensis J-59 via ammonium sulfate precipitation followed by chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, and gel filtration on Sephacryl S-300. The purified enzyme is a homotetramer with a native molecular mass of 180 kDa and a subunit molecular mass of 44 kDa. The amino acid N-terminal sequence of glucose isomerase from S. chibaensis J-59 was determined to be Ser-Tyr-Gln-Pro-Thr-Pro-Glu-Asp-Arg-Phe-Thr-Phe-Gly-Leu. The first 14 amino acids of the N-terminal sequence of the enzyme showed strong analogies with N-terminal sequences of glucose isomerase produced by other Streptomyces spp. The optimum pH and temperature for activity were 7.5 and 85, respectively. The purified enzyme required $Mg^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, and $Mn^{2+}$ for the activity, $Mg^{2+}$ being the most effective. The enzyme was not inhibited by $Ca^{2+}$, but was inhibited by $Hg^{2+}$, $Ag^+$, and $Cu^{2+}$. The $K_m$, $V_{max}$, and $k_{cat}$ values of S. chibaensis J-59 isomerase for glucose were 83 mM, 40.9 U/mg, and $1,843min^{-1}$, respectively. In the presence of $Co^{2+}$, cell-free enzymes retained 100% without loss of activities by the heat-treatment at $70^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. The enzyme retained 50% residual activity after heating at $85^{\circ}C$ for 13.5 h, at $90^{\circ}C$ for 126 min. The enzyme is more thermostable than any other glucose isomerases of Streptomyces spp.
