Anaerobic Filters (AF) packed with porous ceramic floating media were operated at different operational conditions to identify the feasibility of the renewable bioenergy, methane production from swine wastewater and to verify the suitability of effluent from anaerobic filters for the subsequent biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Stepwise increase in organic loading rates (OLRs) or decrease in hydraulic retention times (HRTs) with influent TCOD concentration of 14,000 mg/L were utilized at mesophilic temperature. The maximum methane productivity of 1.74 volume of $CH_4$ per volume of reactor per day (v/v-d) was achieved at an hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 0.5 day (OLR 28 g TVS/L-d). Based on the biogas production, the highest total volatile solids (TVS) removal efficiency of 63% was obtained at an HRT of 3 days (OLR 4.67 g TVS/L-d), however based on the result from the effluent total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) analysis, the highest TCOD removal efficiency of 75% was achieved. The effluent alkalinity concentration over the range of 2,050~2,980 mg/L as $CaCO_3$ at all operational conditions, could compensate the alkalinity destruction caused by nitrification. The effluent from the anaerobic filter operated under the HRT of 2 days showed the COD/TKN ratio of 15~35 and COD/TP ratio of 38~56. Therefore effluent C/N/P ratio is able to satisfy the optimum COD/TKN ratio of greater than 8.0 and COD/TP ratio of 33 for the subsequent biological nutrient removal.
Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the performances of anaerobic filters packed with ceramic tube and pall-ring media treating a dairy waste. The media packing volume was 65% of effective volume of anaerobic filter. Organics removals of anaerobic filters were maintained above 80% even at an organics loading rate of $10kgCOD/m^3/d$, and this was comparable to aerobic treatment of organic wastes. Organics removals of the ceramic tube anaerobic filters were always lower than those of the pall-ring anaerobic filters due to intrinsic physical property of ceramic tube, especially lower void space which caused to clogging and entrapment of biogas, substrate transfer limitation, and irregular evolution of biogas leading to loss of solids and biomass. This was clearly observed in higher concentration of TSS in the effluent from the ceramic tube anaerobic filter despite of higher retention capacity of TSS compared with pall-ring media. Vertical distribution of organics and solids in the filters showed above 90% of organics and solids in influent were removed below 20% of reactor height, and 50% of remaining organics and solids were removed though media packing zone. Effluent quality from the anaerobic filter was heavily depended on media itself as well as suspended biomass formed below media. It is therefore concluded that the type of media played an important role in biomass accumulation arid gas-liquid-solid separation efficiency. Type of media did not affect the start-up behaviors of the anaerobic filter, and supernatant from anaerobic digested sludge showed a good performance as a seeding materials.
Laboratory investigation was conducted to evaluat the mixing effects on organic removal efficiency to treat low-strength synthetic wastewater using modified anaerobic - filter reactor combining anaerobic filter and upflow anaerobic sludge blanket. Using the modified process the low-strength wastewater like municipal sewage could be treated with 85% T-COD removal efficiency at hydraulic retention time of 6 hours. At the constant organic loading of 0.5 kg COD/m 3-day, the organic removal efficiency and effluent COD concentration are increased as influent COD concentration increased from 125 mg/l to 500 mg/l. Mixing effects on organic removal efficiency are evident and optimum mixing speed is found as 50RPM. Placing the granular sludge and media on which slime layer was pre-formed into the reactor seemed to be very effective In achieving short start-up period. Therefore, the steady state was achived after 4 weeks and 1 week based on T-COD and S-COD, respectively.
The effects of packing materials in the anaerobic reactor and inorganic chemicals in the synthetic wastewater on the anaerobic treatment during the start up period were investigated using anaeroic filter process. The Ringlace and Honeycomb tube as packing materials were used in the anaerobic reactors. The Ca$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{2+}$ ion concentration as inorganic chemicals contained higher 40 times and 100 times as compared to the control synthetic wastewater, respectively. A start up period 104 and 150 days were necessary to achieve loading rate of 0.37 and 0.74 kg-Toc/m$^3$.d in the anaerobic filter process packed by Ringlace and Honeycomb tube, respectively. The loading rates of the reactor using the synthetic wastewater containing Ca$^{2+}$ (40 times) could be increased faster than in the reactors using the synthetic wastewater containing Fe$^{2+}$ ion (100 times) and control synthetic wastewater. The results of XMA analysis that a lot of the Ca$^{2+}$ ion on the surface of the anaerobic sludge in the anaerobic reactor packed by Ringlace which were fed supplied with synthetic wastewater containing Ca$^{2+}$ ion (40 times) observed as compared to the reactors supplied with control synthetic wastewater and containing Fe$^{2+}$ ion (100 times).
This study mainly concentrated on the treatment of nightsoil by an anaerobic filter media process. Nightsoil has been one of the major water pollutants in this couotry. It represents high ROD and SS concentrations. A comprehensive laboratory study conducted at Kangwoon National University indicate: (1) In the case of anaerobic filter system, COD and BOD removal efficiencies were greatly influenced by hydraulic retention time(HRT), but SS removal efficiencies dropped slowly when HRT were 2~13 days. (2) COD removal efficiencies were 19% when HRT were 15 days, 14% when HRT were 8 days, 10% when HRT were 6 days, 9% when HRT were 4 days, 2% when HRT were 2 days. (3) BOD removal efficiencies were 23% when HRT were 15 days, 14% when HRT were 8 days, 18% when HRT were 6 days, 7% when HRT were 4 days, 5.8% when HRT were 2days. (4) SS removal efficiencies were 21%~25%(2~15 days HRT).
Characteristics of the upflow anaerobic filter process have been studied with six other conditions. When nitrate was mixed with influent in the bottom of the reactor, removal efficiencies of TBOD and TCOD were lower than those of TBOD and TCOD when nitrate was injected to the side of the reactor. In addition, when nitrate was injected to the side of the reactor the concentration of volatile acids of effluent was not high and ORP of effluent was lower than the mixture when nitrate was mingled with influent. It means that the bottom of the anaerobic filter played an important role in making volatile acids, methane production, and denitrification. Moreover, percentage of methane in the gas increased in accordance with increasing nitrate injection. It was because there were a lot of methane producing microorganisms which would rather use hydrogen than acetate. This reactor condition gets unstable due to provide nitrate. Therefore, higher hydrogen Pressure, shorter generation time, and lower standard Gibb's free energy gave great portion of methane of gas.
This study thus looks into two treatment processess : i) Anaerobic digester coupled with hollow fibre membrane unit. Treatment of starch waste with anaerobic digester-membrane system was studied. $0.17\m^2$ area of hollow fibre membrane unit of known pore size was immersed into laboratory-scale anaerobic digestion system. The pore size of membrane was varied from 0.03 to $\0.15mu$m. The hydraulic retention time of anaerobic digester was varied from 1.5 to 10 days. The effect of hydraulic retention time on treatment efficiency was significant while effect of membrane size was not significant. The gas production was about 0.74㎥/kg COD treated. The COD removal efficient was about 80-95% depending on the hydraulic retention time. ii ) Crossflow ultrafiltration as post treatment to anaerobic filter. The effluent from anaerobic filter, which had a total COD in the range of 4,500-5,200 mg/L was treated by crossflow ultrafiltration units. The study conducted with different membrane pore size indicated that membrace with 1,000,000 molecular weight cut-off size gave a higher COD removal efficiency in the range of 83-87% while giving a study flux of $120-130 L/\m^2$.h. A study was conducted to see the long term clogging effect of membrane also.
A new type of microbial fuel cell (MFC) with anaerobic membrane filter was designed to produce bioelectricity and to treat domestic sewage at relatively high organic loading rate (OLR) of $6.25kgCOD/m^3/day$ and short hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 1.9 h. A following aeration system was applied to ensure effluent water quality in continuous operation. Glucose was supplemented to increase the influent concentration of domestic sewage. Influent substrate of 95% was removed via the MFC and following aeration system and the corresponding maximum power density was $25.6mW/m^3$. External resistor of $200{\Omega}$ and air-cathode system contributed better MFC performance comparing to $2000{\Omega}$ and dissolved oxygen as a catholyte.

Recently, it is increase in the processing of organic waste using anaerobic digestion. Therefore, the studies on the processing method for increasing the anaerobic digestion waste water. But it is very difficult to solid-liquid separation, because the characteristics of anaerobic digestion waste water. So this study evaluate solid-liquid separation efficiency of anaerobic digestion sludge using CST(Capillary Suction Time), TTF(Time to Filter). To address this problem, a membrane filter press of the lab scale was produced and the anaerobic digestion wastewater was applied to it. Polymer coagulants were found to be most suitable 7192PLUS and 1T60, It is necessary to minimum injection concentration is 7192PLUS (200 mg/L), 1T60 (100 mg/L). To evaluate dehydration efficiency, it was measured the moisture content of the dehydrated cake and suspended solids of decanted water. As a result, showed that a high removal efficiency of 97.4% when the solid-liquid separation using the membrane filter press. And the moisture content of the dehydrated cake was less than 65%.
To effectively treat the domestic sewage that was produced on a small-scale in farming and fishing village in order to encourage an ecologically friendly environment, a small-scale sewage treatment apparatus using natural purification methods that consisted of an aerobic and an anaerobic plots were constructed. The efficiency of sewage treatment according to the sewage loading was investigated to obtain the optimum sewage loading in small-scale sewage treatment apparatus. Removal rate of pollutants according to the sewage loading were in the order of $150\;Lm^{-2}day^{-1}{\fallingdotseq}300\;Lm^{-2}day^{-1}>600\;Lm^{-2}day^{-1}$. Therefore, the optimum sewage loading was 300 L m-2 day-1. Under the optimum sewage loading, removal rate of BOD, $COD_{Mn}$, turbidity, T-N and T-P were 99, 94, 99, 49 and 89%, respectively. However, to satisfy the water quality standard in effluent in small-sclae sewage treatment apparatus for domestic sewage treatment, the low removal efficiency of T-N and T-P must be improved. So to improve the removal rate of T-N and T-P, the efficiency of sewage treatment according to the improved sewage treatment process such as, re-treatment at aerobic plot, anaerobic condition of aerobic plot, changing the filter media sizes and the depths in anaerobic plot, and also addition of oyster shells to filter media at anaerobic plot were investigated. In case of 150 cm depth in anaerobic plot with filter medium A (effectivity particle size 1.50 mm) and addition of oyster shells to filter media at anaerobic plot, removal rate of T-N and T-P in both plots were increased by 10 and 3%, and 14 and 7% in comparison with 100 cm depth in anaerobic plot with filter medium B(effectivity particle size 0.95 mm), respectively. The optimum improved sewage treatment process in small-scale sewage treatment apparatus were 150 cm depth in anaerobic plot with filter medium A and addition of oyster shells to filter media at anaerobic plot.
