  • The physiology of the unicellular green alga Dunaliella salina in response to abiotic stress has been studied for several decades. Early D. salina research focused on its remarkable salinity tolerance and ability, upon exposure to various abiotic stresses, to accumulate high concentrations of $\beta$-carotene and other carotenoid pigments valued highly as nutraceuticals. The simple life cycle and growth requirements of D. salina make this organism one of the large-scale commercially exploited microalgae for natural carotenoids. Recent advances in genomics and proteomics now allow investigation of abiotic stress responses at the molecular level. Detailed knowledge of isoprenoid biosynthesis mechanisms and the development of molecular tools and techniques for D. salina will allow the improvement of physiological characteristics of algal strains and the use of transgenic algae in bioreactors. Here we review D. salina isoprenoid and carotenoid biosynthesis regulation, and also the biotechnological and genetic transformation procedures developed for this alga that set the stage for its future use as a production system.

  • This paper presents an evaluation of shear transfer across cracks in reinforced concrete through finite element modelling (FEM) and analytical predictions. The aggregate interlock is one of the mechanisms responsible for the shear transfer between two slip surfaces of a crack; the others are the dowel action, when the reinforcement contributes resisting a parcel of shear displacement (reinforcement), and the uncracked concrete comprised by the shear resistance until the development of the first crack. The aim of this study deals with the development of a 3D numerical model, which describes the behavior of Z-type push-off specimen, in order to determine the properties of interface subjected to direct shear in terms cohesion and friction angle. The numerical model was validated based on experimental data and a parametric study was performed with the variation of the concrete strength. The numerical results were compared with analytical predictions and a new equation was proposed to predict the maximum shear stress in cracked concrete.

  • Bioavailability studies in guinea pigs and dissolution tests of sustained release capsules of ascorbic acid were investigated comparing with those of solution. The results were as follows; 1. In the dissolution test sustained release capsules released 90% of ascorbic acid after 12 hours, and ascorbic acid in the chewable tablet was dissolved. completely within 10 minutes. 2. In the determination of total ascorbic acid concentration in serum, the area under the curve between 0 and 24 hours $(AUC\;0{\sim}24h)$ ana the maximum serum concentration $(C_{max})$ did not show any significant difference between solution and sustained release capsule. The time to the maximum concentration $(C_{max})$ and the time over $50{\mu}g/ml$ concentration showed significant difference. 3. The time reached to maximum excretion rate $(T_{max})$ in sustained release capsule was longer than that of solution.

  • In current European Standard EN 1993, the moment-rotation characteristics of beam-to-column joints made from steel with a yield stress > 460MPa are obtained from elastic design procedures. The strength of the joint basic components, such as the column web subject to local transverse compression, is thus limited to the yield resistance rather than the plastic resistance. With the recent developments of higher strength steel grades, the need for these restrictions should be revisited. However, as the strength of the steel is increased, the buckling characteristics become more significant and thus instability phenomena may govern the design. This paper summarizes a comprehensive set of finite element parametric studies pertaining to the strength behaviour of high-strength steel unstiffened I-columns in transverse compression. The paper outlines the implementation and validation of a three-dimensional finite element model and presents the relevant numerical test results. The finite element predictions are evaluated against the strength values anticipated by the EN 1993 for conventional steel columns and recommendations are made for revising the specifications.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to compare the durability and retention of 4 types of attachments placed over computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) titanium bars when subjected to different pH conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Four commercially available attachments were investigated: Hader Yellow, Hader Red, Ackerman Gold and Ackerman Stainless Steel. These attachments and Ackerman CAD/CAM titanium bars were placed in 2 vessels containing different artificial saliva solutions (pH 7/pH 4) at $37^{\circ}C$ for one month to simulate corrosion conditions, and they were then subjected to mechanical testing (5400 cycles of insertion and removal). RESULTS. The results revealed that there were significant differences in the average values of insertion/removal force due to the pH (F (1, 24)=9.207, P<.05) and the type of attachment (F (3, 24)=11.742, P<.05). CONCLUSION. More acidic pH values were found to have a negative influence on the retention capacity of the attachments.

  • This study evaluated the effects of muscle and dietary treatments including CORN, dry distillers grains (DDGS), and modified distillers grains (MDGS) on fatty acid (FA) deposition in two novel value-added beef cuts (Petite Tender - M. teres major - TM, and Flat Iron - M. infraspinatus - INF). Crossbred steers were randomly assigned to one of three dietary treatments (CORN, 40% of DDGS with 8%-12% of moisture, and 40% of MDGS with 45%-55% of moisture - DM basis) and fed for 190 days. The TM muscle had higher concentrations of ω6 FAs and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) when compared to INF. Beef fed CORN showed greater C16:0 and lower C18:0 values when compared to beef fed distillers grains (DGS). Beef fed DDGS had higher concentrations of ω6 FAs when compared to MDGS. Different moisture levels only affected FAs containing 14, 16, and 17 carbons. Different muscles, diets, and moisture levels of DGS affected the deposition of FAs in the lean.

  • In this paper, the radiation characteristics of a Circular Loop Antenna is studied in a moving homogeneous, isotropic and linear media with a constant velocity much less than the speed of light. In Stuffing the radiation characteristics, Srst vector potential on the loop antenna is derived in the moving media by appling Maxwell-Minkowaski's theory. Next, using the derived relations, the electric and magnetic Seld is calculated for the spec-i Sed wave length ana velocity of the media. The Seld patterns in the moving media are compared with those of stationary media. We find that the intensity of the field is reduced in the direction of the media velocity and increased in the opposite direction only for the component parallel with the plane of the antenna. The deviation from the stationary media is proportional to the velocity of the media and the frequency of source current.
