NOAA/AVHRR, Topex/Poseidon, and Jason-1 data were used to analyze sea surface temperatures and thermal fronts in the North East Asia Seas. Temporal and spatial analyses were based on data from 1993 to 2008. The amplitude and phase for the annual mode on SL and SST were investigated with harmonic analysis. The geographical distribution of amplitudes for comparison of SL and SST are slightly reverse in southwest-northeast tilted direction. The time series analysis conducted on the entire researched area presented consistent pattern. Peak of Sea Level was presented 1~2 months after the peak of the surface sea temperature was shown. This explains that Sea Level change occurs after the generation of surface sea temperature change in sea. The Sobel edge detection method delineated four fronts. Thermal fronts generally occurred over steep bathymetric slopes. Annual amplitudes and phases were bounded within these frontal areas.
The DEEP-South photometric census of small Solar System bodies is producing massive time-series data of variable, transient or moving objects as a by-product. To fully investigate unexplored variable phenomena, we present an application of multi-aperture photometry and FastBit indexing techniques to a portion of the DEEP-South year-one data. Our new pipeline is designed to do automated point source detection, robust high-precision photometry and calibration of non-crowded fields overlapped with area previously surveyed. We also adopt an efficient data indexing algorithm for faster access to the DEEP-South database. In this paper, we show some application examples of catalog-based variability searches to find new variable stars and to recover targeted asteroids. We discovered 21 new periodic variables including two eclipsing binary systems and one white dwarf/M dwarf pair candidate. We also successfully recovered astrometry and photometry of two near-earth asteroids, 2006 DZ169 and 1996 SK, along with the updated properties of their rotational signals (e.g., period and amplitude).
In this paper, study on the mode characteristics analysis of the SH-EMAT (shear horizontal, electromagnetic acoustic transducer) waves for evaluating the thickness reduction in plates such as corrosion and friction is presented. Noncontact methods for ultrasonic wave generation and detection have been a great concern and highly demanded due to their capability of wave generation and reception on surface of high temperature or on rough surface. Mode identification of the SH-EMAT wave is carried out in an aluminum plate with thinning defects using time frequency analysis method such as wavelet transform, compared with theoretically calculated group velocity dispersion curve. The changes of various wave features such as the amplitude and the time-of-flight have been observed and the correlations with the thickness reduction have been investigated. Firstly, experiments have been conducted to confirm that it is possible to selectively generate and receive specific desired SH modes. These modes have then been analyzed to select the parameters that are sensitive to the thickness change. The results show that the mode cutoff and the time-of-flight changes are feasible as key parameters to evaluate the thickness reduction.
Annual vegetation growth patterns are determined by the intrinsic phenological characteristics of each land cover types. So, if typical growth patterns of each land cover types are well-estimated, and a NDVI time-series data of a certain area is compared to those estimated patterns, we can implement more advanced analyses such as a land surface-type classification or a land surface type change detection. In this study, we utilized Terra MODIS NDVI 250m data and compressed full annual NDVI time series data into several indices using the Harmonic Analysis of Time Series(HANTS) algorithm which extracts the most significant frequencies expected to be presented in the original NDVI time-series data. Then, we found these frequencies patterns, described by amplitude and phase data, were significantly different from each other according to vegetation types and these could be used for land cover classification. However, in spite of the capabilities of the HANTS algorithm for detecting and interpolating cloud-contaminated NDVI values, some distorted NDVI pixels of June, July and August, as well as the long rainy season in Korea, are not properly corrected. In particular, in the case of two or three successive NDVI time-series data, which are severely affected by clouds, the HANTS algorithm outputted wrong results.
We present high-resolution radial velocity (RV) measurements of K2 giant HD 66141 from December 2003 to January 2011 using the fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO). We find that the RV measurements for HD 66141 exhibit a periodic variation of 480 days with a semi-amplitude of 146 m/s. We do not find the correlation between RV variations and a chromospheric activity indicator (H line). The Hipparcos photometry as well as bisector velocity span (BVS) also do not show any obvious correlations with RV variations. Thus, Keplerian motion is the most likely explanation, which suggests that the RV variations arise from an orbital motion. Assuming a possible stellar mass of 1.5 $M{\odot}$, for HD 66141, we obtain a minimum mass for the planetary companion of 7.4 MJup with an orbital semi-major axis of 1.4 AU, and an eccentricity of 0.07. We support that planet occurrence rate around evolved stars is more than 10 % (Dollinger et al. 2009) as well as more massive stars do form significantly more massive planetary companions (Johnson et al. 2007; Lovis & Mayor 2007; Dollinger et al. 2009).
To detect exoplanets and study pulsation of K giant stars, we have observed precise RV (radial velocity) of about 55 early K giant (K0 - K4) stars brighter than V = 5 magnitude since 2003 by using BOES, a high resolution Echelle spectrograph attached to the 1.8 m telescope at BOAO (Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory). We detected periodic RV variation of KO III star $\beta$ Gem (HD 62509) with a period $P\;=\;596.6\;{\pm}\;2.3$ days and a semi-amplitude $K\;=\;44.8\;{\pm}\;0.7\;ms^{-1}$. If we adopt 1.7 $M_{\odot}$ for the mass of $\beta$ Gem, this yields the minimum mass of the companion m sin i = 2.64 $M_{Jupiter}$. Our results agree well with Hatzes et al. (2006) and Reffert et al. (2006), and confirm their discovery of a planetary object around $\beta$ Gem. We also confirmed about 192 minutes short period stellar oscillation found by Hatzes and Zechmeister (2007). This is the first report of exoplanet detection using BOES and demonstrates that the RV observation using BOES is accurate and stable enough to detect exoplanets around bright K giant stars.
Resistive leakage current flowing ZnO blocks increases with its ages, which is an important indicator of arrester deterioration. However, a complicated circuitry is essential to measure the resistive leakage current included in the total leakage current, and the difficult handling of the measurement makes few applications to the fields. In this paper, we propose a resistive leakage current measurement device which is composed of a current detection circuit and an analysis program operated on a microprocessor. The device samples the input leakage current waveform digitally, and discriminate the zero-cross and the peak point of the waveform to analyze the current amplitude vs. phase. The capacitive leakage current is then eliminated from the total leakage current by using an algorithm to extract the resistive leakage current only. Also, the device can be operated automatically and manually to analyze the resistive leakage current even when the leakage current waveform is distorted due to various types of arrester deterioration. To estimate the performance of the device, we carried out a test on ZnO blocks and lightning arresters. From the results, it is confirmed that the device could analyze most parameters needed for the arrester diagnostics such as total leakage current. resistive leakage current, and the $3^rd$ harmonic leakage current.
Electric breakdown in the liquid produces a spark channel. The energy input into the channel causes expansion of a vapor gas cavity. If the power of the discharge is high enough, this expansion is fast enough to produce a shock wave which propagates through the liquid to the subject of destruction. We focused our attention on the correlation between electric parameters and the characteristics of the flash caused by point to-point electrode discharge in the water. By varying firing voltage and gap length, we obtained the features of the flash : amplitude, pulse width, and so on. In this paper, We have known that there is a concrete interrelation between underwater firing voltage and photodiode output.
Automatic detection system to detect acoustic emission pulse and fractal dimension were developed, to observe tree deterioration phenomena in LDPE. The purpose of our work are to use acoustic emission system and fractal dimension and to investigate the treeing phenomena in polymeric insulation under applied AC voltage 11[kV] with an artificial needle-shaped void(1.5[mm]) using the above system. We analyzed and phase angle-acoustic emission pulse amplitude-deterioration time ($\Phi$-AEA-t) pattern and phase angle-acoustic emission pulse number-deterioration time($\Phi$-AEN-t) pattern using statistical operators such as skewness, fractal dimension. In this paper show that the correlation of $\Phi$-AEA-t, $\Phi$-AEN-t, fractal dimension using regression analysis by the method of least squares can be used to predict the breakdown just before the breakdown occurs.
Differential pulse polarographic(DPP) analytical procedure for the rifampicin antibiotic, which can be applied to monitor its synthetic process from the starting antibiotic of rifamycin B or rifamycin SV has been developed based on the electrochemical reduction of an azomethine group. Rifampicin exhibited a cathodic peak due to the azomethine group in the side chain of 3-[(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)imino]methyl moiety and another cathodic peak due to the carbonyl group in rifamycin SV by DPP. The experimental peak potential shift of an azomethine reduction was -73 mV/pH in the pH range between 3.0 and 7.5, agreeing with involvement of 4 e-and 5 $H^5$ in its reduction. By the cyclic voltammetric(CV) studies, the azomethine and the carbonyl reductions in rifampicin were processed irreversibly on the mercury electrode. The plot of peak currents vs. concentrations of rifampicin ranging $1.0{\times}10^{-7} M~$1.0{\times}10^{-5} M yielded a straight line with a correlation coefficient of 0.9996. The detection limit was $1.0{\times}10^{-8} M with a modulation amplitude of 50 mV DPP has been successfully applied for the determination of rifampicin in the pharmaceutical preparations.
