The ELF-MT survey has been conducted at 9 points along the national road between the Sindangri and Dojonri area to study on the boundary between the Okchon and Choson systems, and subsurface geological structure of these two systems. Natural electromagnetic fields of 7.8, 14, and 20 Hz in the Schumann resonant frequency band were used for ELF-MT measurement. Apparent resistivity values were calculated from the measured magnetic and electric fields at each frequency, and resistivity sections were obtained by means of a trial and error method for one-dimensional analysis and finite element method for two-dimensioal analysis. The results of this study show that the resistivities of the Okchon and Choson systems are 700-3500 ohm-m and 40-5000 ohm-m, respectively. The boundary between these two systems is a fault with the width of 1 km fault zone and resistivity value of 200 ohm-m, and is located around Koburangjae. Another fault is appeared in Sindangri, and its resistivity value is 130 ohm-m. Intrusion of biotite granite is distributed in Jungchijae, and its resistivity value is 750 ohm-m. The area between Susanri and Koburangjae shows the highest resistivity value of 3500 ohm-m because metabasite and amphibolite are distributed in that area. Extremely low resistivity value of 40 ohm-m around Yongamsan is due to the Yongam formation, which is composed of graphitic black slate and overlying Choson Great Limestone group.
The chemical similarity of the magnetite-bearing amphiboltes of the Yangyang iron mine to mixtures of sedimentary pelites and limestone or dolomite and to the Gyeonggi para-amphibolites (So, 1974) is consistently indicated by all the chemical data of the rocks. Eight amphibolite samples were each analyzed for 18 elements, by wet chemical and emission spectroscopic methods, and these chemical data were compared with the para-amphibolites from the Gyeonggi metamorphic complex. Petrography and oxidation ratios were also considered.
The Precambrian granitic gneisses are widely distributed in the Danyang-Yecheon area, eastern part of Korea, where the Ryeongnam massif borders the Ogcheon fold belt. They are composed of migmatitic, biotite granitic, garnet-bearing and granoblastic granitic gneisses. The common joint sets of the granitic gneiss are NE and NS directions, which are probably related to the effects of Daebo orogeny and Bulgugsa disturbance, respectively. Mineral assemblages of the banded gneiss xenolith in the garnet-bearing granitic gneiss are quartz-plagioc1ase-biotite-mus-covite-orthoclase and quartz-plagioc1ase-biotite-garnet, belonging to the amphibolite facies. The granoblastic granitic gneiss is felsic, metaluminous, and granitic, and shows subalkaline trend. The garnet-biotite geothermometry of garnet-bearing granitic gneiss yields 640$^{\circ}$-708$^{\circ}C$ at pressure of 4 kb.
The Téra manganese deposit represents the most significant manganese mineralization discovered in Niger up today. The main host rocks of this ore are gondites, which are a garnet and quartz rich metamorphic rocks. The supergene weathering developed an alteration profile on these gondites. This study aims to identify the mineralogical composition of gondites and associated rocks, in order to highlight the origine of rocks and the manganese enrichment. The methodological approach adopted involved a field study followed by polarizing microscopic analysis using transmitted and reflected lights. Additionally, quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was performed to assess the manganese ore minerals present in the gondite and associated rocks, including mica schists, amphibolites, and quartzites. The petrographic study revealed a paragenesis characterized by the presence of kyanite, staurolites, garnets and plagioclases that are generally poikiloblasts with quartz and opaque minerals inclusions, emphasizing the internal schistosity which is planar, helicitic or microfolded. These features indicate a prograde metamorphism until high-pressure amphibolite facies conditions. These conditions are followed by greenschist facies conditions marked by calcite, epidote, muscovite, chlorite and muscovite assemblage which emphasizes the vertical tectonics. Depending on the alteration process, the manganese ore exhibit a granular texture at the bottom of the gondite hills, transitioning to a colloform texture towards the top, passing through the epigenization and replacement texture. The XRD analysis further revealed that the studied rocks originated from a volcano-sedimentary complex, characterized by alternating marly, arenaceous and pelitic sequences associated with submarine exhalations.
With respect to the amphibolites in the Mungyong area of the central part of the Ogcheon Fold Belt, detail field occurrence, texture and geochemical properties within each sills and petrogenetic environment are presented. We confirmed that the amphibolites in the Sangnaeri Formation (Ogcheon Supergroup) and limestone(Cambro-Ordovician Chosun Supergroup) sequences are metamorphosed dolerite sills which are roughly concordant to bedding of country rocks. Geologic distribution of the rocks is distinctly improved compared with those of previous investigations. There are four main sills so far observed in the study area. One is emplaced in limestone(Ls Sill, about 3 m thick) and the others are emplaced in Sangnaeri Formation, which are named First Sill(about 40 m thick), Second Sill(about 100 m thick) and Third Sill(about 40 m thick) from lower to upper horizons of the meta-pelitic sequences. The thick sills are intruded by minor sills and the Third Sill is a composite sill consisting of two main and two minor sills. Each sill has fine grained chilled marginal zones and grain size increases inwards from both contacts. The Second Sill has various vein and white patch in central part and the rock compositions vary systematically from margin to central part. $SiO_2,\;Na_2O,\;K_2O\;and\;P_2O_5$ increase, whereas $TiO_2,\;FeO,\;Al_2O_3\;and\;CaO$ decrease toward the contort. We investigate the major and trace element variations of ten selected rock compositions as intruding initial magma take occurrence and chemical properties into consideration. The compositional variations of them can not be explained by fractionation crystallization of single magma. Geologic distribution, geochemical properties and previous data suggest that amphibolite precursors(basaltic magma) of the study area were intrusive as sill-like in an intracontinental rift environment.
Metabasites and metapelites in the Mungyong area were intruded by Cretaceous granites with radius of 4-8 km. As the distance from granite body increases, the mineral assemblage of metabasite changes from amphibole + plagioclase through amphibole + plagioclase + epidote to amphibole + plagioclase + epidote + chlorite. The compositional variations of amphibole and plagioclase according to the change of metamorphic grade and bulk rock compositions are very complex. Towards the Mungyong Cretaceous granite body, the mineral assemblage of metapelite changes from chlorite+ muscovite(ch1orite zone) through biotite + chlorite + muscovite(biotite zone) to andalusite+biotite + muscovite${\pm}$chlorite or cordierite+ biotite+ muscovite${\pm}$chlorite(cordierite zone). The estimated metamorphic conditions of cordierite zone are 480~$580^{\circ}C$ 1.5-3.3 kb. The theoretical study on the thermal metamorphism caused by the Cretaceous granite with radius longer than 4 km in the Mungyong area suggests the followings: The degree of metamorphism is mainly determined not by the size of granite body but by the temperature of granite intrusion; The country rocks within 2 km from Cretaceous granite have undergone metamorphism with temperature higher than $500^{\circ}C$, which is consistent with the petrological study in the Mungyong area. Mungyong Cretaceous granite caused a low P/T thermal metamorphism to the country rocks; the amphibolite facies metamorphism to the country rocks within 1-2 km from the granite body and the epidote-amphibolite and greenschist facies metamorphism to the country rocks within 2-5 km.
Muscovite and biotite from 52 metasediments and 5 granites in the Hwasan area, the southwest of the Okcheon metamorphic belt and the Miwon-Jeungpyeong area, central Okcheon metamorphic belt were dated by the K-Ar and $^{40}$ Ar/$^{39}$ Ar methods. Muscovite and biotite ages from metapelitic and psammitic rocks (metasediments) of the Boeun and Pibanryeong units in the Hwasan area are concentrated in the mid-Jurassic (149-180 Ma). K-Ar and $^{40}$ Ar/$^{39}$ Ar ages for metapelitic and psammitic rocks of the Boeun and Pibanryeong units in the Miwon-Jeungpyeong area show complicated age distribution. Muscovite and biotite ages are classified by three groups, 142-194 Ma, 216-234 Ma, and 241-277 Ma. Younger (Cretaceous) ages occur only in metasediments close to Cretaceous granitic rocks in the southeastern region and the older ages of 216-277 Ma are restricted to the middle Part of the Jeungpyeong area. Most ages in the other area of the central Okcheon metamorphic belt fall between 142-194 Ma (Jurassic). K-Ar and $^{40}$ Ar/$^{39}$ Ar ages for granite from the northern part in the both the southwest and central Okcheon metamorphic belt also gave middle Jurassic ages (156-168 Ma). The similar ages from both metasediments and granites in the study areas indicate simultaneous cooling of both rocks to 300-350$^{\circ}C$ during the middle Jurassic. The state of graphitization of carbonaceous material of all metasediments in the study areas Indicates fully ordered graphite falling within a small range, from 3.353 to 3.359 ${\AA}$, which indicate amphibolite facies regional metamorphism. In the southern sector of the Boeun unit from the Hwasan area, metamorphic grade indicated by mineral paragenesis during regional intermediate-P/T metamorphism is greenschist facies. Whereas, the $d_{002}$ values for carbonaceous materials in the same sector show fully ordered graphite (ca. 500$^{\circ}C$) indicating amphibolite facies. This result with the concentration of mica ages of metasediments into the middle Jurassic, the presence of low-P/T thermal metamorphic zone (>500$^{\circ}C$) in the metasediments close to the Jurassic granite and the regional intrusion of Jurassic granites and their middle Jurassic intrusion and cooling ages may indicate the low-P/T regional thermal event during the early(\ulcorner)-middle Jurassic after main intermediate-P/T metamorphism which formed main mineral assemblage regionally in the study area. The regional thermal event failed, however, to reset the mineral assemblage of regional intermediate-P/T metamorphism except for narrow aureole (1-2 km) around Jurassic granite because e duration of thermal effect was relatively short by repid cooling of the Jurassic granite. In the middle part of the Jeungpyeong area, central Ogcheon metamorphic belt, muscovite and biotite K-Ar ages from 5 samples are 263-277 Ma and 241-249 Ma, respectively. An intermediate-P/T metamorphism is currently accepted to have occurred between 280 and 300 Ma. Therefore, the muscovite and biotite ages can be interpreted as cooling ages after Ml metamorphism indicating rapid cooling to ca 350$^{\circ}C$ between 280-300 Ma and 263-271 Ma, and biotite ages indicate slower cooling to ca. 300$^{\circ}C$ between 263-277 Ma and 241-249 Ma. However, more detail study is needed to confirm why the Permian to Triassic ages occur only in the middle Part of the Jeungpyeong area.a.
Igneous rocks of Mt. Mudeung area are composed of Pre-Cambrian granite gneiss, Triassic hornblende-biotite granodiorite, Jurassic quartz diorite and Cretaceous igneous rocks. The Cretaceous igneous rocks consist of volcanic rocks (Hwasun andesite, Mudeung-san dacite and Dogok rhyolite) and granitic rocks (micrograpic granite and quartz porphyry). Major elements of the Cretaceous igneous rocks represent calc-alkaline rock series and correspond to a series of differentiated products from cogenetic magma. Igneous activity of Mt. Mudeung area started from volcanic activity, and continued to intrusive activity at end of the Cretaceous. In chondrite normalized REE pattern, most of igneous rocks of Mt. Mudeung area show similar pattern of Eu (-) anomaly. This is a characteristic feature of granite in continental margin by tectonic movement. Variation diagrams of total REE vs. La/Yb V vs. SiO$_2$ indicate differentiation and magnetite fractionation sequential trend of Hwasun andesite longrightarrowMudeungsan dacitelongrightarrowquartz porphyry. In mineral composition of these igneous rocks in mt. Mudeung area, composition of plagioclase and biotite coincidence with variation of whole rock composition, and emplacement and consolidation of magma is about 15 km (about 4.9 Kbar) in Jurassic quartz diorite and 2.0~3.2 km (0.6~1.0 Kbar) in Triassic hornblende-biotite granodiorite used by amphibolite geobarometer. Parental magma type of these granitic rocks of nt. Mudeung area corresponds to VAG field in Pearce diagram, and I-type in ACF diagram.
The metamorphic rocks of Yongin-Anseong area in Gyeonggi massif are composed of high-grade gneisses and schists which are considered as Precambrian basement, and Jurassic granite which intruded the metamorphic rocks. In this paper, we discuss the geochemical characteristics of metamorphic rocks and granites in this area based on REE and Nd isotope geochemistry. And we also discuss the petrogenetic relationship between metamorphic rocks and granites in this area. Most of Nd model ages (T$\_$DM/$\^$Nd/) from the metamorphic rocks range ca. 2.6Ga~2.9Ga which are correspond to the main crustal formation stage in Gyeonggi massif by Lee et. al. (2003). And Nd model ages show that the source material of quartzofeldspathic gneiss is slightly older than that of biotite banded gneiss. In chondrite-normalized rare earth element pattern, the range of (La/Yb)$\_$N/ value from biotite banded gneiss is 37~136, which shows sharp gradient and suggests that biotite banded gneiss was originated from a strongly fractionated source material. However, that of amphibolite is 4.65~6.64, which shows nearly flattened pattern. Particularly, the chondrite normalized REE patterns from the high-grade metamorphic rocks show the REE geochemisoy of original source material before metamorphism. In addition, the values of (La/Yb)$\_$N/ and Nd model ages of granite are 32~40 and 1.69Ga~2.08Ga, respectively, which suggest that the source material of granite is different from that of Precambrian basement such as biotite banded gneiss and quartzofeldspthic gneiss in the area.
Ultramafic rocks in Choongnam area are mainly serpenitinites which are parent rock of talc and asbestos ore deposits. About 10 $^{\circ}$ NNE-trending parallel serpentinites masses occur as discontineous isolated lenticular intrusive bodies in Precambrian gneiss complex between Hongseong-Kwangcheon line and Onyang-Cheongyang line. The sizes of serpentinites vary from several centimeters to 1 kilometer in width and from several meters to 5 kilometers in length. The serpentinites show high SiO$_2$(39.99wt.% in average), MgO(38.46wt % in average), Cr(>1011ppm), Ni(>1660ppm), and Co(>80ppm). Most serpentinites contain serpentine more than 50%. Some serpentines contain original minerals such as olivine, pyroxene and chromite. Also, serpentinites body may contain a little serpentinized peridotite, and some talc and asbestos ore deposits. The original rocks of the serpentinites interpreted as Alpine type ultramafic rocks, and dunite and/or harzburgite which were originated from slightly depleted upper mantle(30${\sim}$40km deep), and emplaced in the crust through the large fault zones. It seems that main serpentinization from the original rocks was occurred during greenschist and/or amphibolite facies regional metamorphism in Choongnam area.
