Soil erosion, transportation, and sedimentation by water flow often occur in a stream. This excessive occurrence threatens the safety of hydraulic structures, and aggravates natural disasters like flood. To prevent soil disaster according to the soil erosion, it is necessary to predict accurate sediment outflow primarily. Besides, it is very important to choose appropriate models by basin characteristics, to estimate accurate quantity of related factors, and to acquire available hydrological data. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to estimate soil erosion amount and sediment amount according to rainfall-runoff by using rainfall, discharge, and sediment in the Seolmacheon experimental catchment. And, it proposed sediment delivery ratio of the Seolmacheon catchment by result of studying sediment delivery ratio. Hereafter, this study will estimate sediment delivery ratio by basin characteristics, and formulate the method of estimating soil erosion and sediment outflow in various conditions by applying the results in other catchments.

This study discusses the soil erosion on hillslopes and sediment deposition in lakes within catchments in South Korea. In order to determine seasonal variations of sedimentation in Yeongcheon and Seondong lakes, the sediment traps were set in the deep part of both lakes and lake sediments have been sampledmonthly from July 2004 to August 2005. Some properties such as highmineral content, fine particle size and high particle density in the Yeongcheon Lake indicate intensive soil erosion, sediment transportation and deposition throughout the catchment for a long time. The high sediment yield in the Seondong Lake is related with higher weathering intensity and extreme soil erosion by running water due to higher seasonal rainfall amount. Rates of erosion and sedimentation in the Seondong Lake are estimated to be higher than those of the Yeongcheon Lake, suggesting that the Seondong Lake is associated with higher precipitation, smaller catchment area, and extreme soil vulnerability to ephemeral erosion by overland flow during the heavy rainfall event. Consequently, both catchments are characterized by different erosion and sedimentation processes, as well as different geomorphic factors (bedrock, soil structure, rainfall intensity and catchment area).
Our research work aimed to evaluate cover crop effects of winter rye on soil characteristics, soil conservation, and yield productivities on potato fields with 15% slope during a fallowed period. There were two controls of bared field without any cultivation and conventional potato cultivation without winter rye. Potato cultivation increased soil pH, organic matter, available phosphate, and exchangeable cation regardless of cover crop cultivation. Sub-soil, particularly, all components of soil chemical properties showed higher value in winter rye cultivation than conventional cultivation. Higher soil density was observed on cover crop cultivation than conventional cultivation resulting from root residues of the cover crop both topsoil and subsoil. Cover crop residues positively affected plant growth and reduced the amount of soil erosion by holding the soil. Although severe soil erosion was seen in conventional cultivation, winter rye cultivation declined soil erosion by 47% during the fallow period on potato slope fields. Distinct soil bacterial communities were detected among treatments and some OTU(Operational Taxonomic Unit)s showed significantly higher abundance in winter rye treatment. Total yield and commercial rate demonstrated no significant differences while higher tuber phosphate, K+, and Mg2+ contents were observed in winter rye cultivation.
Jeju island, which is located along the moving path of typhoon, suffers from flooding and overflow by torrential rain. So abrupt runoff occurring, damages of downstream farm field and shore culturing farms are increasing. In this study, Oaedo stream, one of the mountainous streams on Jeju island, was selected as the basin of study subject and was classified into 3 sub-basins, and after the characteristics of subject basin, the soil erosion amount and the sediment delivery of the stream by land usage distribution were estimated with the use of SATEEC ArcView GIS, the sediment yield amount of 2000 and 2005 was analyzed comparatively. As a result of estimating the sediment yield amount of 2000, the three sub-basins were respectively 12,572.7, 14,080 and 157,761 tons/year. and sediment yield amounts were estimated as 35,172.9, 5,266 and 258,535 tons/year respectively in 2005. The soil erosion and sediment yield amount of 2005 using single storm rainfall were estimated high compared with 2000, but for sub-basin 2, the values rather decreased due to changes in land use, and the land coverage of 2005, since there are many classifications of land usage compared with 2000, enabling to reflect more accurate land usage condition, could deduce appropriate results. It is anticipated that such study results can be utilized as basic data to propose a direction to predict the amount of sediment yield that causes secondary flooding damage and deteriorates water quality within detention pond and grit chamber, and take action against damages in the downstream farm field and shore culturing farms.

This study builds a sediment rating curve using the measured sediment yield and the simulated soil erosion by a GIS-embedded empirical model. Then the structured sediment rating curve is used to determine the SDR on a basin scale in southern Korea. The whole data(year of 2002-2008) are divided into two groups and the first group(year of 2002-2005) is used for calibration, while the other is used for validation. Two cases(rainfall amount and rainfall intensity) are analyzed to consider the rainfall runoff erosivity factor in simulating soil erosion. The results show the derived SDR provides reasonable accuracy and rainfall intensity gives better performance in calculating soil erosion than rainfall amount.

Upland erosion pollutes surface waters and often causes serious problems when deposition occurs. This study builds a sediment rating curve using the measured sediment yield and the simulated soil erosion by a GIS-embedded empirical model. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) between the simulated soil erosion and the measurement sediment yields with rainfall amount are 0.427 for Donghyang and 0.667 for Cheonchen, but the values with rainfall intensity are 0.873 and 0.927 respectively. The data are divided into two groups: one for calibration during 2002-2005 (48 months) and the other for estimation during 2006-2008 (36 months). The first data group (2002-2005) was used to derive the SDR with an aid of soil erosion calculated by the USLE and the measured sediment yield. The mean SDR with rainfall amount is 6.273 and 3.353, respectively, while 4.799 and 2.874 for rainfall intensity. But the standard deviation (STD) with rainfall intensity is 0.930 and 0.407, which is much less than that with rainfall amount (3.746 and 2.090) for both sites. The results show the derived SDR provides reasonable accuracy and rainfall intensity gives better performance in calculating soil erosion than rainfall amount.
Purpose of this study was to estimate of soil erosion, which is related with crop productivity and water quality in watershed, in Seonakdong river watershed using USLE. The data set for USLE estimation were derived from detailed digital map(K factor), satellite imagery(C and P factors) and DEM(LS factor). The R factor was calculated by AWS data from Kimhae agricultural technology center. The soil loss from arable land was equivalent of 31.5% of total soil loss in Seonakdong river watershed. The soil loss amount of paddy field and upland were 2.8% and 97.2% of arable land, respectively, even in the area where paddy field was occupied much largely as 76.3%. The reason of large amount of soil loss from upland was that 30.4% of upland was distributed at "severe" and "very severe" soil erosion grade in watershed. The distribution of soil erosion grade during cropping season(May-Sept.) was similar to the annual soil loss. Soil erosion of non-cropping season(Oct.-Apr.) was small due to a low R factor. But, soil erosion grade of near mountain footslope areas showed severe and very severe even in non-cropping season.
In this paper, forestry area change effect on the soil erosion in Asan lake watershed was estimated. Temporal variations of land use in the study watershed were analyzed from Landsat-5 TM remote sensing images. Geographic Information System (GIS) combined with Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was used to estimate the soil erosion of Asan lake watershed. Spatial data for each USLE factors was obtained from the Landsat-5 TM remote sensing images and 1/25,000 scale digital contour maps. Sediment yield to Asan lake was estimated by sediment delivery ratio and sediment accumulation in lake was estimated by trap efficiency. The estimation methods were validated for sediment accumulation in Asan lake. From the hydrographic survey from 1974 to 2003 for Asan lake, sediment accumulation was measured. The estimated accumulation sediment of 303,569ton/yr showed similar value with observed of 295,888ton/yr. From the validated estimation methods, the increasing amount of soil erosion when 1% of forest area in Asan lake watershed decreases was calculated from 12.91 to 1482.05ton/yr.

This study was performed to suggest a soil loss reduction skill through estimating soil erosion from a small watershed including each type of sloping agriland by using GEOWEPP model. Experimental watershed at Gangwon province was selected for very typical sloping fields of highland agriculture in Alpine area. Runoff discharge and sediment load, hourly rainfall amount occurred during storm event were gauged, and weather data were obtained from Daegwallyeong meteorological station. The results of GEOWEPP model estimation showed that relative error values for total runoff discharge and sediment load were 3 %, -14.5 % respectively. Based on the result, soil erosion and waterway path map for each hillslope were made to select target hillslope. Several hillslopes of severe soil erosion were analyezed and then the optimal vegetative filter strip construction width and waterway path to plant grass were decided by using GEOWEPP Model.

Physically-based WEPP watershed version was applied to a watershed, located at Jawoon-ri, Gangwon with very detailed rainfall data, rather than daily rainfall data. Then it was validated with measured sediment data collected at the sediment settling ponds and through overland flow. The $R^2$ and the EI for runoff comparisons were 0.88 and 0.91, respectively. For sediment comparisons, the $R^2$ and the EI values were 0.95 and 0.91. Since the WEPP provides higher accuracies in predicting runoff and sediment yield from the study watershed, various slope scenarios (2%, 3%, 5.5%, 8%, 10%, 13%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 23%, 25%, 28%, 30%) were made and simulated sediment yield values were analyzed to develop appropriate soil erosion management practices. It was found that soil erosion increase linearly with increase in slope of the field in the watershed. However, the soil erosion increases dramatically with the slope of 20% or higher. Therefore special care should be taken for the agricultural field with higher slope of 20% or higher. As shown in this study, the WEPP watershed version is suitable model to predict soil erosion where torrential rainfall events are causing significant amount of soil loss from the field and it can also be used to develop site-specific best management practices.
