The adoption of legume cover crops in no-tillage system can contribute to improve soil fertility by providing several benefits, including reduction in soil erosion, suppression of weed growth and N supply to subsequent crops. We conducted a field study to investigate the effect of cover crops and nitrogen fertilization rates on yield and nitrogen use efficiency of waxy corn (Zea mays L.) in no-tillage upland field. Two legume cover crops, hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) and crimson clover (Trifolium incarnuturn L.) were mechanically terminated with roller in early June. For each cover crop treatment, nitrogen (N) fertilizer was applied at three different rates (145, 72.5 and $0kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$). The growth and yield characteristics of corn were significantly affected by the N fertilization rates in crimson clover plots, which suggest N mineralization from the cover crop residue was not sufficient. In contrast, N fertilization rates had no significant effect on growth and yield of corn in hairy vetch plots, indicating that the amount of N released from the cover crop is large enough to meet most of the N requirement of corn. However, the application of N fertilizer in hairy vetch cover plots resulted in slight increase of crop yield, though not statically significant, and high levels of N concentration in corn plant tissue possibly due to luxury consumption of N. Organic residues on the soil surface in hairy vetch cover plots had substantial amounts of N after harvest, ranging from 100 to $116kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$, which is presumably retained during winter season and released by microbial mineralization in subsequent year. The highest nitrogen yield efficiency was achieved in the plot with hairy vetch cover and no N fertilizer application, followed by the plot with hairy vetch cover and $72.5kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ fertilization rate. In conclusion, hairy vetch showed better performance in corn productivity as compared with crimson clover. In addition, it was concluded that the application of N fertilizer between 0 and $72.5kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ in combination with hairy vetch cover crop might be most efficient for corn yield under no-tillage system with climatic and soil characteristics similar to those of the experimental site.

Torrential rain causes landslide damage every year. In particular, the 2011 downpour caused landslides at numerous points throughout Mt. Woomyeon, which resulted in considerable damage to people and property. Because it occurred in an urban area, this case became a major social issue and received public attention. Measures were quickly implemented for multilateral investigations and recovery. Landslides caused by heavy rain are greatly affected by rainfall at the time. Landslides from the upper part erode the flow path, increasing the size, causing much damage to the lower part. This study selected a rural village area among the damaged areas of Mt. Woomyeon, and analyzed the change in terrain profile before and after a landslide using the DSM data obtained from airborne LiDAR. This area can be divided into three hydrological basins. For each basin, the analysis was performed on the average slope of each part of the flow path, as well as the erosion and deposition due to soil flow. As a result of the analysis, it was estimated that the total amount of soil from the Jeonwon village was 15,300㎥. These field data based on GIS can be used as basic information to predict damage in the case of a similar disaster, and it can be helpful in analyzing the results of various debris flow simulations.
The landslide survey in an area of about 10 ha was carried out in Hyuseok-dong. Youngchoon-myeon, Danyang-gun, Choongcheongbuk-do. The results showed that there were many indications on geographical changes, such as scars, depressions, upheavals, cracks and destructions of the construction features. The mean degree of slope of the study area was $28^{\circ}$. The results of surface displacement in this area showed that landslide mass is moving in the direction of SE~SEE, and horizontal and vertical movement rate of the center of moving mass was about 1.2m/year and 0.86m/year, respectively. It was estimated that the amount of the soil erosion in the cliff at the lower edge of this area was 0.823m due to the caving erosion by the Namhangang(River) from June through November, 1995.

Various Best Management Practices (BMPs) have been suggested to reduce soil erosion and non point source (NPS) pollutant loads from agricultural fields. However, very little research regarding water quality improvement with No-till (NT) has been performed in Korea. Thus, effects of NT were investigated in this study. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of NT on the surface runoff and sediment discharge in a field. Eight experimental plots of $5{\times}30m$ in size and 3 % or 8 % in slope prepared on gravelly sandy loam soil were treated with Conventional-till (CT) and NT. Runoff and NPS pollution discharge were monitored and compared the treatments. The amounts of rainfall from 13 monitored events ranged from 28.7 mm to 503.5 mm. The runoff amount was reduced by 17.6~59.2 % in 3 % NT and 29.6~53.2 % in 8 % NT. The average NPS pollution loads of the 3 % NT plots and 8 % NT plot were reduced about 45.1~89.2 % and 47.7~98.0 % compared to those of the CT plots, respectively. This research revealed that NT can reduce the NPS pollution loads substantially as well as increase the crop yield. Runoff and NPS pollution loads reduction by NT method could be contribute to improve the water quality of streams in agricultural regions.
Purpose: This study was conducted to understand the public awareness of landslide and check dams in 2015-2020 using the big data platform 'Hyean' and to confirm the utilization of this platform in disaster prevention areas. Method: The total amount, number of detection by period by media, and affirmative and negative trends of a search for 'landslide' and 'check dam' in 2015-2020 were analyzed using a keyword search of 'Hyean.' Result: There is significant lack of public awareness of check dam compared to landslide, and the trend is more noticeable in the conspicuous gap of data amount between the news and SNS media. The number and the timing of the search for 'landslide' coincided with the actual occurrence of landslide, while the detection of 'check dam' was less related to it. Relatively affirmative preception for the check dam is inferred, but it was difficult to confirm accurate statistical affirmative and negative trends in the disaster prevention field using 'Hyean.' Conclusion: Unlike the experts who expect positive public awareness of check dam, the statistic results show that the public awareness of the check dam as an effective countermeasure against landslide was extremely low. Active promotion of erosion control projects should be carried out first, and a balanced sample survey should accompany online and periodic field surveys. Since there is a limit to grasping the effective perception in the field of disaster prevention area using 'Hyean', it should be very cautious to establish local/governmental policies using it.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the existing method of calculating rainfall-runoff erosivity using monthly precipitation, such as Fournier's index, modified Fournier's index, IAS (Institute of Agricultural Sciences) index, etc., and to present more reasonable regression model based on monthly rainfall data in Korea. This study introduced a new simplified method of calculating rainfall-runoff erosivity based on monthly precipitation, called by modified IAS index. It was expanded form IAS index which is the simple calculation method by summing up the rainfall amount of two months with maximum amount. Monthly precipitation and annual rainfall-runoff erosivity at 21 weather stations for over 25 years were used to analyze correlation relationship and regression model. The result shows that modified IAS index is the more reasonable parameter for estimating rainfall-runoff erosivity of the middle-western and south-western regions in Korea.

Three phases of development in construction projects (i.e. pre-development, construction and post construction) diversely effect the environment, hydraulics and ecosystem. Currently, the domestic environmental policy is in control of the various environmental hazards produced after completion of development operations. Nevertheless, with the enforcement of water pollution total amount management system, improving the water quality; also the water and ecosystem preservation law recommends enforcing the sediment management for development operations in order to lessen the negative impacts to the environment. Recently, the country is experiencing difficulties in various development project locations due to insufficiency of interpreting the fundamental data for sediment loss and miscalculation of soil loss unit loads of sediment. This research utilizes data from 2000 to 2005 discussing a total of 1,036 environment impact assessment projects gathered from various ministries and offices namely Ministry of Environment (MOE), Ministry of Agriculture, the Office of Forestry, and Ministry of Construction and Transportation. Moreover, quantity of sediment from high land agriculture reports involving contaminant discharge characteristic investigation previously did concerning old land agriculture and So-Yang lake non-point pollution source management area as well as management measured data from MOE. The findings of this study reveal that the highest soil loss rate occurred from mountain district for pre-development and post construction and sports facility during construction.
To gain the basic informations on soil management practices by determination of the differences of soil genetic characteristics and the contents of soil moisture due to slope aspects of hilly land, this study was conducted at 1992 on sweet persimmon orchard soils derived from porphyry in southern of Korea. The results obtained were summarized as follows. The soils studied were belong to fine loamy family. The degree of soil development was greater in the north than other slope aspects and the solum thickness also the same. The soil chemical properties such as pH and exchangeable cations except for potassium were low generally in the orchards studied but the content of organic matter was lack in the summit and south aspect. The contents of Fe oxide and extractable Al were higher in the subsurface than surface. Fe, Al and clay indexes which indicate relative intensity of B horizon development were higher in the side slope than summit and the highest in the north slope. The rate of solum to B horizon was higher as about 1.5 for summit and west aspect which had thiner B horizon thickness compared to other aspect. North and west aspect had certainly more amount of soil water at drought season than other slope aspects and was lower the difference of soil water between the drought and wet seasons. Therfore, the soil management such as erosion control and irrigation at drought season should be practices differently due to slope aspect and soil chararteristics in the sloped land.
The results of ground vegetation experiment conducted at completely denuded forestland in the mudstone region are summerized as follows: On the reaults of soiling quantity the effect of soiling was observed where depth of soiling over 10 cm was practiced, and a plot where treated with 15cm soiling and without fertilizer showed poor growth and it was even worser than the plot where soiling was practiced only 1 cm in thikness but applied adequate amount of fertilizers. The depth of slits between 30cm and 40cm showed no significant difference in the effect. A plot where covered with vegetation bag showed somewhat better results in seed loss and early growth but no differences observed in the fall result over the none covered plot. And then, it is recommendable to have soiling over 10cm in thikness with slit of 30cm and 30cm in depth and to apply 30 gram of fertilizer (22;22:11, 50 gram) per slit. On various soiling materials trial there were no striking differences in the effect of soiling between weathered granite soil, wheathered tuffs soil and weathered mudstone soil. In the treatment with various green materials, a plot treated with straw mat showed a significant difference at 1 percent. The results show that weathered mudstone soil is effective to use as soiling materials and straw mat treatment was better. On forest fertilization trial, in the mudstone region where red and black pine trees already existing at a rate of 2,000-3,000 trees per hectare had applied 110kg of compound fertilizers (9:12:3 and 22:22:11) per hectare basis in terms of plant nutrient. As a result, the difference in effect between the compound fertilizers was not found however the leaf color and leaf length of the fertilizer added plot showed darker and longer at 30 percent over the no fertilizer received plot. Compound fertilizers, 14:37:12 and 9:12:3 were applied to alder trees at a rate of 20 gram and 40 gram per tree in terms of plant nutrient and a remarkable growth accelerantion was observed where 40 grams of plant nutrient applied. The effect difference between the compound fertilizers was not found. On investigation of tree root elongation, forty years old red pine trees showed only 15cm tap root elongation through mudstone while black pine had 23 cm tap root elongation. The total length of supporting root elongtion of red and black pines showed 20 and 13 meters, respectively. The tap roots of Black locusts were not able to elongate through mudstone, however, the supporting roots tended to develop to the underneath of pine tree where some moisture content is available. Black locusts And grown on the residual soil of mudstone normally die between 8 to 10 years. The red pine trees show flat in tree shape while black pine had triangle in the shape. With the results it can be said that in an artificial reforestation in denuded forest land of the mudstone region the adequate slit and enough amount of fertiliizer application must be provided for the succesful performance of the program. On integrated experimental results of 1972. for the establishment of ground vegetation on the completely denuded forest land in mudstone region, soiling could be effectively practiced with weathered mudstone soil and it would not specially necessiate to have either weathered granite or tuffssoil for the soiling. And the soiling depth should be more than 10 cm in thickness. Among green materials used the straw mat proved to be the most effective reatment. Three major factors which enable to establish ground vegetation by the shortest period of time: A. Physical improvement of soil is necessary to breakdown of the horizontal cracks sushas Slit, contour line plot, seeding hole and etc., and soiling with weathered mudstone soil. B. Chemical improvement of soil: is needed sufficient amount of fertilizer application 300~400kg ha, $N+P_2O_5+K_2O$), and increased production of ground covering and expedite resolution of the vegetation (ground vegetation, fallen leaves and twigs). This study was conducted to suggest the ecological restoration and environmentally friendly revegetation technology for the rock-exposed cut-slopes by the Natural Topsoil Restoration Methods (NTRM) with the following restoration objectives; (1) prevention or reduction of wind and water erosion, (2) provision of food and cover for variety of animal species, (3) improvement of the visual or aesthetic quality of the disturbed slopes. On Nov. in 1995, the 5cm thick layer of artificial soil and 2cm thick layer of straw-mulching was attached at rock-exposed cut-slopes by NTRM without using anchor wire and anchor pin. The main results during four years surveying on the ground-coverage effect, plant growth, species diversity and importance values were summarized as follows. 1. Artificial soil attached at rock exposed cut-slopes was not eroded until recovered by tree and herbaceous vegetation in spite of not using anchor wire and anchor pin. Also it shows low soil hardiness and has almost the same amount of bacteria and fungi with in surrounding natural topsoil. 2. In 'combination for the woody vegetation', Lespedeza cyrtobotrya, Albizzia julibrissin, Rhus chinensis, Indigofera pseudo-tinctoria occupied upper layer vegetation. Since three years after seeding, Indigofera pseudo-tinctoria had overwhelmed the other woody plants and cool season foreign grasses, Erigeron canadensis, Taraxacum mongolicum, Commelina communis, Arundinella hirta (Thunberg) and Oenothera erythrosepala grows at lower part of the vegetation, 3. The heights of the Rhus chinensis grows 1.8m, Indigofera pseudo-tinctoria 2.0m, so it seems that the objectives of woody vegetation with native plants could be accomplished. 4. After 4 years later after seeding in 'combination for the herbaceous vegetation', the most dominant plant was Indigofera pseudo-tinctoria, the next was in order of cool-season grasses, Taraxacum mongolicum, Erigeron canadensis, lxeris dentata (Thunberg), Oenothera erythrosepala, Arundinella hirta (Thunberg). The diversity index in 'combination for woody vegetation' was higher than that in 'combination for the herbaceous vegetation'. The tendency of the intrusion of secondary succession plants was more effective in 'combination for the herbaceous vegetation' than in 'combination for the woody vegetation'.
