Purpose: This study is to analyze the changes of consumption patterns to diagnose the economic impacts on consumers' market during COVID-19, and to suggest implications to overcome the new social and economic crisis of Jeju Island. Research design, data, and methodology: We collected a set of credit card transaction records issued by BC Card Company from merchants in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province for past 4 years from 2017 to 2020 from the Jeju Data Hub run by Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. The big data contains details of approved credit card transactions including the approval numbers, amount, locations and types of merchants, time and age of users, etc. The researchers summed up amount in monthly basis, transforming big data to small data to analyze the changes of consumption before and after COVID-19. Results: Sales fell sharply in transportation industries including airlines, and overall consumption by age group decreased while the decrease in consumption among the seniors was relatively small. The sales of Yeon-dong and Yongdam-dong in Jeju City also fell significantly compared to other regions. As a result of the paired t-test of all 73 samples in Jeju City, the p-value of the mean consumption of the credit card in 2019 and 2020 is significant, statistically proven that the total consumption amount in the two years is different. Conclusions: We found there are sensitive spots that can be strategically approached based on the changes in consumption patterns by industry, region, and age although most of companies and small businesses have been hit by COVID-19. It is necessary for local companies and for the government to be focusing their support on upgrading services, in order to prevent declining sales and job instability for their employees, creating strategies to retain jobs and prevent customer churn in the face of the crisis. As Jeju Province is highly dependent on the tertiary industry, including tourism, it is suggested to create various strategies to overcome the crisis of the pandemic by constantly monitoring the sales trends of local companies.
This study aimed at quantifying the impact of envelope insulation on energy consumption for thermal controls in residential buildings in southern part of Korea. A series of parametric simulations for a range of R-values of walls, roof, floor, and windows were computationally conducted for a prototypical Korean detached house. Analysis revealed that the total amount of heat gain was larger than that of heat loss, while the amount of energy for cooling was smaller than that for heating due to the difference of system efficiency; the envelope heat transfer was more significant for the heat loss, thus, the increase of the envelope insulation was more effective to reduce heating load; and there were certain levels of envelope insulation after which the energy saving effect was not significant. These findings are expected to be a fundamental database for the decision of proper insulation level in Korean residential buildings.

The purpose of this study was to examine university students' consumption-orientation and attitude toward conspicuous consumption as well as to identify the factors that are most influential on consumption-orientation and conspicuous consumption behavior. The major findings of this study are summarized below. First, the average scores of consumption-orientation and conspicuous consumption were 2.71 and 3.15 respectively, on a 5 point scale. Second, the most influential factor on university students' consumption-orientation was friends' influence. Third, the most influential factor on conspicuous consumption was students' perceived social status. Fourth, conspicuous consumption tendency and consumption-orientation were significantly higher for those students with larger amount of allowances, female students, or the students who are working. Fifth, the university students' consumption-orientation and conspicuous consumption tendency were significantly higher for the students whose parents' child-rearing style is inconsistent or excessive investment. Finally, the consumption orientation has a significant positive relationship with conspicuous consumption.
The amount of energy consumption in the buildings is approximately 20% of domestic energy consumption. The Carbon Point Program have been published on reduction of greenhouse gas emission in buildings under the paradigm of 'Low Carbon Green Growth'. This study focuses on the effect of 'Carbon Point Program' for residential buildings in Daegu. The amount of electricity and waterwork consumption and information of households were investigated to analyse the effect of carbon point program. The samples are situated in Deagu and are apartment in Bukgu and Suseonggu. The $CO_2$ emission is analysed by factors of energy resource and household organization between before participating and after participating in Carbon Point Program. The participation type has a difference of voluntary participation in Suseonggu and passive participation in Bukgu. Based on this investigation, average amount of $CO_2$ emission was reduced from voluntary participation households but all of them did not. To promote the effect of Carbon Point Program, this study proposes that needing the plans to raise will and activity of reducing carbon and to help participation which have disadvantage against achieving reduction.
This study compared and analyzed the consumption and amount of red pepper used in Baechu Kimchi (cabbage Kimchi) especially the amounts used in Kimchi recipes with respect to the passage of time from the 1930s to the 2010s. In this analysis, 78 recipes for cabbage Kimchi were taken from books, daily newspapers and magazines from 1930 to 2014 and collected for comparison. The result of the study showed that the consumption and inclusion of dried red pepper powder in cabbage Kimchi increased. The average consumption of red pepper in the 1930s was 5.75 g, and the number went up to 8.83 g in the 1940s, to 13.8 g in the 1950s, and to 20.25 g in the 1960s. The amount dramatically increased from 1970 to 1980 (53.37 g) and kept rising until 2010 (71.26 g). The average consumption of red pepper in cabbage Kimchi in the 2010s is about 12 times that of the 1930s.
Universities which have taken an important role to develop the human resources, became one of emitters of greenhouse gases, they need to find a way to reduce global warming gases through reduction of energy consumption. This study is intented to propose a solution that can reduce the greenhouse gases at universities located in Korea. To conduct this study, we have chosen a university at Wonju in Kangwon province for a case study and investigated the emissions of carbon dioxide from campus facilities and residential area. The data has become a footstone to estimate the assumed amount of carbon emission for top 23 energy consumption universities in Korea. We calculate the amount for carbon emission, not only for facilities in campus, but also for residential buildings, amount for emission is increased severely by showing $9780.94tCO_2$, which is 2.1 times more than average amount for emission of greenhouse gases researched in existing statistics. Universities have difficulty in introducing new energy generation system, as having been done business companies or other commercial facilities but they are required to introduce some educational methods since it is a academic space. Incentive to universities reducing carbon emission in campus is a system to provide incentives with students, professors, administrative personnels and others in campus as a compensation for their efforts to save energy. It is needed to establish the infrastructures for measuring energy consumption in campus.
Central control air-conditioning systems are being replaced with individually controlled air-conditioning system in the university. The amount of growth of electricity consumption is due to the increasing demand of electric heat pump. In winter and summer, the energy consumption showed a tendency to increase. On the other hand, showed less energy in spring and autumn. Increase the amount of electricity than the degree of decline in gas consumption was higher. Can be considered as transitional phenomena. Because electric heat pump, gas driven heat pump and the absorption chiller-heater are used at the same time in some of the buildings.
In this paper, experiments through performance evaluation under real operation environment were conducted. Transceiver and microcontroller shows the characteristics for the amount of current consumption and software protocol was optimized by controlling the time of Report Attribute and electric current level. To reduce current consumption when using battery, with designing transmission of the same amount of data as soon as possible, power consumption efficiency was enhanced.
Recent years in Korea, some new developed buildings are only using electricity as power for heating, cooling, bathing and even cooking which means except electricity, there is no natural gas or other kinds of energy used in such kind of building. In vehicle industry area, scientists already invented electric vehicle as an environment friendly vehicle; after that, in architecture design and construction field, buildings only using electricity appeared; the curiosity of the environment impact of energy consumption by such kind of building lead me to do this research. In general, electricity is known as a clean energy resource reasoned by it is noncombustible energy resource; however, although there is no environmental pollution by using electricity, electricity generation procedure in power plant may cause huge amount of environment pollution; especially, electricity generation from combusting coal in power plant could emit enormous air pollutants to the air. In this research, the yearly amount of air pollution by energy using under traditional way in research target building that is using natural gas for heating, bathing and cooking and electricity for lighting, equipment and cooling is compared with yearly amount of air pollution by only using electricity as power in the building; result shows that building that only uses electricity emits much more air pollutants than uses electricity and natural gas together in the building. According to the amount of air pollutants comparison result between two different energy application types in the building, residential SOFC (Solid oxide fuel cell) is simulated to apply in this building for decreasing environment pollution of the building; furthermore, high load factor could lead high efficiency of SOFC, in the scenario of simulating applying SOFC in the building, SOFC is shared by two or three households in spring and autumn to increase efficiency of the SOFC. In sum, this research is trying to demonstrate electricity is a conditioned environment friendly energy resource; in the meanwhile, SOFC is simulated efficiently applying in the building only using electricity as power to decrease the large amount of air pollutants by energy using in the building. Energy consumption of the building is analyzed by calibrated commercial software Design Builder; the calibrated mathematical model of SOFC is referred from other researcher's study.
