  • Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings have been widely applied to the mechanical components, cutting tools due to properties of high hardness and wear resistance. Among them, hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) coatings are well-known for their low friction properties, stable production of thin and thick film, they were reported to be easily worn away under high temperature. Non-hydrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) is an ideal for industrial applicability due to good thermal stability from high $sp^3$-bonding fraction ranging from 70 to 80 %. However, the large compressive stress of ta-C coating limits to apply thick ta-C coating. In this study, the thick ta-C coating was deposited onto Inconel alloy disk by the FCVA technique. The thickness of the ta-C coating was about $3.5{\mu}m$. The tribological behaviors of ta-C coated disks sliding against $Si_3N_4$ balls were examined under elevated temperature divided into 23, 100, 200 and $300^{\circ}C$. The range of temperature was setting up until peel off observed. The experimental results showed that the friction coefficient was decreased from 0.14 to 0.05 with increasing temperature up to $200^{\circ}C$. At $300^{\circ}C$, the friction coefficient was dramatically increased over 5,000 cycles and then delaminated. These phenomenon was summarized two kinds of reasons: (1) Thermal degradation and (2) graphitization of ta-C coating. At first, the reason of thermal degradation was demonstrated by wear rate calculation. The wear rate of ta-C coatings showed an increasing trend with elevated temperature. For investigation of relationship between hardness and graphitization, thick ta-C coatings(2, 3 and $5{\mu}m$) were additionally deposited. As the thickness of ta-C coating was increased, hardness decreased from 58 to 49 GPa, which means that graphitization was accelerated. Therefore, now we are trying to increase $sp^3$ fraction of ta-C coating and control the coating parameters for thermal stability of thick ta-C at high temperatures.

  • In the past, a very popular way to reduce the corrosion rate of zinc was the use of chemical conversion layers based on $Cr^{+6}$. However, the use of chromium salts is now restricted because of environmental protection legislation. Previous research investigated the optimum corrosion resistance of galvanized steel treated with an organic/inorganic solution containing Si. The result showed that the optimum corrosion resistance occurred by heat treatment of $190^{\circ}C$ in 5 min. In this study, one organic and three hybrid organic/inorganic coating solutions were applied to cold-rolled (CR) carbon steel. The coatings were then evaluated for corrosion resistance under a salt spray test. The coating solutions examined in this study consisted of urethane-only, urethane-Si, urethane-Si-Ti, and urethane-Si-Ti-epoxy. The results of the 7 h salt spray test showed that the urethane-Si-Ti and urethane-Si-Ti-epoxy coating solutions had superior corrosion resistance on CR steel.

  • Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy has been used to study the optical properties of $Pr^{3+}-doped$ selenide glasses. The complex refractive indexes of $Pr^{3+}-selenide$ glasses were measured in a frequency range from 0.3 to 1.5 THz. The real and imaginary refractive indexes increased with increasing frequency and $Pr^{3+}$ ion concentration. The obtained result indicated that the phonon modes of the $Pr^{3+}-doped$ selenide glasses shift to lower frequencies with the concentration of $Pr^{3+}$ ions. The theory of far-infrared absorption in amorphous materials was used to analyze the results. The measured data showed that the disorder-induced terahertz absorption increased with increasing $Pr^{3+}$ ion concentration.

  • Aluminum nitride (AlN) powder was successfully synthesized at low temperature via carbothermal reduction and nitridation (CRN) assisted by microwave heating. The synthesis processes of AlN powder were investigated with X-ray diffraction, FE-SEM, FT-IR and TGA/DSC. Aluminum nitrate was used as an oxidizer and aluminum source, urea as fuel, and glucose as carbon source. These starting materials were mixed with D.I water and reacted in a flask at $100^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes. After the reaction was finished, black foamy intermediate product was formed, which was considered to be an amorphous $Al_2O_3$ particles through intermediate product obtained by solution combustion synthesis (SCS) at the results of X-ray diffraction patterns and FT-IR. This intermediate product was nitridated at temperatures of $1300^{\circ}C$ and $1400^{\circ}C$ in $N_2$ atmosphere by a microwave heating furnace and then decarbonated at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in air. It should be noticed from FE-SEM images that as nitridated particles, identified as AlN from X-ray diffraction patterns, are covered with carbon residues. After decarbonating the nitridated powders, the spherical pure AlN powders were obtained without alumina and their particle sizes were dependent on the nitridating temperature with high temperature of $1400^{\circ}C$ giving large particles of around 70~100 nm.

  • Diamond is synthesized from the gaseous mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen by microwave PECVD. $10{\times}10mm^2$ silicon wafers are used as the substrate, and it can be raised more than $900^{\circ}C$ by microwave absorption, radiation by plasma and bombardment of ions. The changes of the morphology and the growth rates of the deposits with the experimental conditions are examined by Scanning Electron Microscopy. The d values of all the deposited films concide with those of powder diffraction data in XRD. In Raman spectra, the peak of the deposit coincides with that of the natural diamond which has a value of 1332.5 $cm^{-1}$, and the broad peak from 1360 $cm^{-1}$to 1600 $cm^{-1}$which represents the amorphous graphite was observed in the higher concentration of carbon monoxide.

  • Silicon carbide (SiC) has recently drawn an enormous industrial interest because of its useful mechanical properties such as thermal resistance, abrasion resistance and thermal conductivity at high temperature. RF Thermal plasma (PL-35 Induction Plasma, Tekna CO., Canada) has been utilized for synthesis of high purity SiC powder from cheap inorganic solution (Tetraethyl Orthosilicate, TEOS). It is found that the powders by thermal plasma consist of SiC with free carbon and amorphous silica ($SiO_2$) and, by thermal treatment and HF treatment, the impurities are driven off resulting high purity SiC nano-powder. The synthesized SiC powder lies below 30 nm and its properties such microstructure, phase composition, specific surface area and free carbon content have been characterized by X-ay diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), thermogravimetric (TG) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET).

  • A large area negative metal ion beam source is developed. Kinetic ion beam of the incident metal ions yields a whole nucleation and growth phenomena compared to the conventional thin film deposition processes. At the initial deposition step one can engineer the surface and interface by tuning the energy of the incident metal ion beams. Smoothness and shallow implantation can be tailored according to the desired application process. Surface chemistry and nucleation process is also controlled by the energy of the direct metal ion beams. Each individual metal ion beams with specific energy undergoes super-thermodynamic reactions and nucleation. degree of formation of tetrahedral Sp3 carbon films and beta-carbon nitride directly depends on the energy of the ion beams. Grain size and formation of polycrystalline Si, at temperatures lower than 500deg. C is obtained and controlled by the energy of the incident Si-ion beams. The large area metal ion source combines the advantages of those magnetron sputter and SKIONs prior cesium activated metal ion source. The ion beam source produces uniform amorphous diamond films over 6 diameter. The films are now investigated for applications such as field emission display emitter materials, protective coatings for computer hard disk and head, and other protective optical coatings. The performance of the ion beam source and recent applications will be presented.

  • Since its discovery in 2004, graphene, a sp2-hybridized 2-Dimension carbon material, has drawn enormous attention. A variety of approaches have been attempted, such as epitaxial growth from silicon carbide, chemical reduction of graphene oxide and CVD. Among these approaches, the CVD process takes great attention due to its guarantee of high quality and large scale with high yield on various transition metals. After synthesis of graphene on metal substrate, the subsequent transfer process is needed to transfer graphene onto various target substrates, such as bubbling transfer, renewable epoxy transfer and wet etching transfer. However, those transfer processes are hard to control and inevitably induce defects to graphene film. Especially for wet etching transfer, the metal substrate is totally etched away, which is horrendous resources wasting, time consuming, and unsuitable for industry production. Thus, our group develops one-step process to directly grow graphene on glass substrate in plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). Copper foil is used as catalyst to enhance the growth of graphene, as well as a temperature shield to provide relatively low temperature to glass substrate. The effect of growth time is reported that longer growth time will provide lower sheet resistance and higher VSG flakes. The VSG with conductivity of $800{\Omega}/sq$ and thickness of 270 nm grown on glass substrate can be obtained under 12 min growing time. The morphology is clearly showed by SEM image and Raman spectra that VSG film is composed of base layer of amorphous carbon and vertically arranged graphene flakes.

  • Tribological behaviors of nitrogen incorporated amorphous diamond-like carbon films were experimentally measured under a vacuum ($3 \times 10^{-5}$ Torr) using a ball (AISI 52100 steel)-on-disk wear-rig. Nitrogen incorporated DLC films were deposited by r.f. plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition method. Mixtures of benzene and ammonia or nitrogen gases were used as the reaction gases for the r.f. PACVD, and Si (100) wafer was used as the substrate. In the tribo-test, effects of DLC film thickness and normal load in friction were measured and discussed. Results showed that friction of nitrogen incorporated DLC films from a mixture gas of benzene and ammonia was lower than that of 100% benzene, specially in the measurement of minimum coefficient of friction. Differences in frictional characteristics of nitrogen incorporated DLC films were explained with the changes in chemical structures of the films. Result also showed that friction of DLC films increased with the sliding contact cycle, which remarkably accompanied with roll-shaped wear debris. Mechanisms and roles of the polymer-like wear debris were presented and discussed.
