  • The effects of the composition and additives on the blackening and deposition rate of electroless Ni-Zn plating have been examined. Hydrazine resulted in lower sheet resistance of the deposit than sodium hypophosphite. Zinc concentration more than 15 wt% and small amount of ammonium sulfate in the deposits were needed in obtaining Ni-Zn deposit with a black color. An optimum condition was obtained for the black Ni-Zn deposit at an appreciable deposition rate.

  • Ammonia Adsorbed Fly Ash (AAFA) samples produced from coal fired plants equipped with SNCR (Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction) of nitrogen oxides with urea have been chemically analyzed, and their physical and dissolution properties have been investigated. XRD results for the ammonia component in AAFA ascertained that ABS (ammonium bisulfate) and AS (ammonium sulfate) were deposited on fly ash as $SO_3$ reacted with unreacted ammonia at SNCR. SEM and EDS images showed that fine ashes on large fly ash surface of sphere type were agglomerated, due to adhesive role of ammonium salts attached fly ashes. Dissolution test results of ammonium salts absorbed on AAFA in distilled water or sea water showed that the proportion of un-ionized $NH_3$ to $NH_4{^+}$ were primarily a function of pH and temperature. Increasing pH and temperature causes an increase in the fraction of un-ionized $NH_3$. At pHs of 9.6 and 10.7, un-ionized $NH_3$ and $NH_4{^+}$ ions are present in equal amounts at distilled water and sea water, respectively.

  • The sizes and structures of micelles formed in aqueous solutions of cationic octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (OTAC) and anionic ammonium dodecyl sulfate (ADS) surfactants were investigated using smallangle neutron scattering (SANS), self-diffusion coefficients by pulsed-gradient spin-echo (PGSE) NMR, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) methods. SANS and DLS data indicate that their structures are spherical at concentrations as high as 300 mM. As the total surfactant concentration increases, the peaks of SANS spectra shift to higher scattering vector and become sharper, indicating that the intermicellar distance decreases and its distribution becomes narrower. This is due to more compact packing of surfactant molecules at high concentrations. The intermicellar distance of around 100 ${\AA}$ above 200 mM corresponds approximately to the diameter of one micelle. The sizes of spherical micelles are 61 ${\AA}$ and 41 ${\AA}$ for 9 mM OTAC and 10 mM ADS, respectively. Also the self-diffusion coefficients by PGSE-NMR yield the apparent sizes 96 ${\AA}$ and 31 ${\AA}$ for micelles of 1 mM OTAC and 10 mM ADS, respectively. For ADS solutions of high concentrations (100-300 mM), DLS data show that the micelle size remains constant at $25{\pm}2{\AA}$. This indicates that the transition in micellar shape does not take place up to 300 mM, which is consistent with the SANS results.

  • This experiment was conducted to compare the frech and dry matter yields and feed values of Sorghum$\times$Sudangrsss Hybrid in accordance with different nitrogen and potassium fertilizer sources at the Dae-Ho reclaimed tidal land, Korea from 2003 to 2004. Soil salt contents of ammonium sulfate plots(T3, T4, T5) were higher than that of the urea plot(T2), but that of potassium sulfate plot(T6) was the lowest. The fresh yields of ammonium sulfate plots(T3, T4, T5) and potassium sulfate plot(T6) were higher than that of the urea plot(T2) as $173\%,\;173\%,\;144\%\;and\;90\%$. respectively. The dry matter and total digestible nutrient(TBN) yields were similar tendency like the results of the fresh matter yields. The crude protein(CP), neutral detergent fiber(NDF) and acid detergent fiber(ADF) contents of ammonium sulfate plots(T3, T4, T5) were higher than those of urea plot(T2), but those of potassium sulfate plot(T6) were the lowest. On the other hand, TDN content in potassium sulfate plot(T6) was the highest. It was desirable to use ammonium sulfate$(20\~30kg\;N/10a)$ and potassium sulfate fertilizer$(15kg\;K_2O/10a)$ than those of urea and potassium chloride fertilizer on reclaimed tidal land in view of forage production and its feed value.

  • A new process for the production of high purity ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ from ammonium aluminium sulfate solution abtained through the sulfation of low grade bauxite ore with $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, and leaching of the sulfated product was investigated. This process is consisted of solvent extraction for Fe component removal from ammonium aluminum sulfate solution and homogeneous precipitation of Al containing precipitate from the refined ammonium aluminium sulfate solution by using urea as precipitator. The optimum conditions of solvent extraction with Alamine 336 as extractant were shaking time of 4min, organic phase ratio to aqueous phase of 0.25. The types of precipitation products from this precipitation were amorphous alumina gel, pseudo-boehmite and crystalline boehmite in the lower temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, in the range from $125^{\circ}C$ to $150^{\circ}C$, and above $150^{\circ}C$, respectively. And also amorphous alumina gel hydrate in $1000^{\circ}C$ and crystalline boehmite in $1250^{\circ}C$ were tranfered to ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, respectively. This alumina was identified as ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ of purity 99.7%.

  • Size distribution of particulate water-soluble ion components was measured at Gosan, Korea using a micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI). Sulfate, ammonium, and nitrate showed peaks in three size ranges; Sulfate and ammonium were of dominant species measured in the fine mode ($D_{p} < 1.8 {\mu}m$). One peak was observed in the condensation mode ($0.218\sim0.532{\mu}m$), and the other peak was obtained in the droplet mode ($0.532\sim1.8{\mu}m$). Considering the fact that the equivalent ratios of ammonium to sulfate ranged from 0.5 to 1.0 in these size ranges, it is inferred that they formed sufficiently neutralized compounds such as ($NH_{4})_{2}SO_{4} and (NH_{4})_{3}H(SO_{4})_{2}$ during the long-range transport of anthropogenic pollutants. On the other hand, nitrate was distributed mainly in the coarse mode ($3.1\sim6.2{\mu}m$) combined with soil and sea salt. Two sets of MOUDI samples were collected in each season. One sample was collected when the concentrations of criteria air pollutants were relatively high, but the other represented relatively clean air quality. The concentrations of sulfate and ammonium particles in droplet mode were the highest in winter and the lowest in summer. When the air quality was bad, the increase of nitrate was observed in the condensation mode ($0.218\sim0.282{\mu}m$). It thus suggests that the nitrate particles were produced through gas phase reaction of nitric acid with ammonia. Chloride depletion was remarkably high in summer due to the high temperature and relative humidity.

  • The culture used wheat bran as media for four kind of mold strains such as Aspergillus oryzae, Aspergillus kawachii, Aspergillus usamii and Rhizopus javanicus to examine which strain could higher the activity of amylase most which is used for alcohol fermentation. It also provided three different kind of wheat bran media containing starch of 47%, 51% and 55% respectively for each strain. For each media it also added three different kind of nitrogen sources; ammonium sulfate, casein, and ammonium sulfate and casein equally mixed. Each nitrogen source added was subordinately differentiated into three different percentages, 2%, 4% and 6% respectively, except the 2% for the ammonium sulfate. The results obtained were summarized as follows (1) The activity of ${\alpha}-amylase$ was highest in the media of starch value 47% of wheat bran with 6% of casein added. (2) The activity of ${\beta}-amylase$ was highest in the media of starch value 51% of wheat bran with 2% of the equal mixture of ammonium sulfate and casein added. (3) The activities of both ${\alpha}-amylase$ and ${\beta}-amylase$ of Aspergillus usamii were highest in the media of starch value 47% wheat bran with no addition of nitrogen source. (4) Of the four strains examined, the activities of ${\alpha}-amylase$ and ${\beta}-amylase$ cultured in Rhizopus javanicus were both relatively higher. (5) The activities of ${\alpha}-amylase$ and ${\beta}-amylase$ of the strains examined became lower as the percentage of starch contents increased except in Rhizopus javanicus.

  • The thermal degradation of ABS in the presence of iron-based metal catalysts has been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The reaction of iron-based metal catalysts (ferric nitrate nonahydrate, ammonium ferric sulfate dodecahydrate, iron sulfate hydrate, ammonium ferric oxalate, iron(II) acetate, iron(II) acetylacetonate and ferric chloride) with ABS has been found to occur during the thermal degradation of ABS. In a nitrogen atmosphere, char formation was observed, and at $600^{\circ}C$ approximately 3~23 wt% of the reaction product was non-volatile char. The resulting enhancement of char formation in a nitrogen atmosphere has been primarily due to the catalytic crosslinking effect of iron-based metal catalysts. On the other hand, char formation of ABS in air at high temperature by iron-based metal catalyst was unsuccessful due to the oxidative degradation of the char.

  • In order to find factors which are essential for the differentiation of chick embryonic myoblasts in culture, chick embryo extract was fractionated by ammonium sulfate or/and Sephadex G-75, and the effects of each fraction on the proliferation and fusion of the myoblasts were examined. The results obtained were as follows: (1) High concentration of embryo extract in the culture medium enhanced the cell proliferation and delayed the fusion of myoblasts. (2) The Sephadex G-75 fractions of embryo extract having proteins of molecular weight between 40,000 and 22,000 enhanced the proliferation and fusion of myoblasts when added to culture media. (3) The fraction of embryo extract precipitated in $60\\sim95%$ saturated ammonium sulfate solution enhanced evidently both the proliferation and fusion of myoblasts. Elution of this effective fraction by Sephadex G-75 showed similar elution profile and effects on the myoblast differentiation as those observed by Sephadex G-75 chromatography of the whole embryo extract, suggesting that the Sephadex fractions and ammonium sulfate fractions contain the same factors that enhance the proliferation and fusion of myoblasts.
