  • An ammonium ion with a size and charge similar to that of potassium can bind to valinomycin, which is used as an ion carrier for potassium, and cause a meaningful interference effect on the detection of potassium ions. Currently, there are few ion sensors that correct the interference effect of ammonium ions, and there are few studies that specifically suggest the mechanism of the interference effect. By fabricating a SPCE-based potassium ion-selective electrode, the electromotive force was measured in the concentration range of potassium in the nutrient solution, and the linear range was measured to be 10-5 to 10-2 M, and the detection limit was 10-5.19 M. And the interference phenomenon of the potassium sensor was investigated in the concentration range of ammonium ions present in the nutrient solution. Therefore, a data-based analysis strategy using deep learning was presented as a method to minimize the interference effect.

  • Systematic study on the extraction of ion pair by the use of picric acid (PCA) as an ion pair forming reagent to the aliphatic amines has not be done by spectrophotometric method. The extraction of ion pair by the use of PCA and 23 kinds of the aliphatic amines was examined. The procedure is as follows; Elving's buffer solution (pH 1.3~10, ionic strength 0.5) each amine solution, and PCA solution were taken into a test tube. The mixture was shaken mechanically with chlorform. The organic phase was filtered through a filter paper to remove water droplets. The absorbance was examined at $\lambda_{max}$ against a reagent blank. Primary and secondary whose carbon number were more than 7 or 6, respectively, are extractable as ion pairs with PCA, while tertiary amines and quaternary ammonium salts are also extractable without the correlation of carbon number. It was considered that the ion pair extraction of primary and secondary amines was affected by the number of carbon of amines, but its extraction of tertiary amines or quaternary ammonium salts was affected by kind of aliphatic amines rather than pKa values or carbon number of amines.

  • Ion exchange performance to remove Ammonium in water was studied using commercially available strong acidic cationic exchange resin of $Na^+$ type in the batch and continuous column reactors. The performance was tested using the effluent concentration histories for continuous column or equilibrium concentrations for batch reactor as a function of time until resins were exhausted or reached ionic equilibrium between resin and solution. The results shoed that cationic exchange resin used in this study was more effective than activated carbon or zeolite for ammonium removal. Ammonium removal with the ion exchange resin temperature to be high qualitative recording minuteness but increases about seasonal change of temperature was judged with the public law where the adaptability is excellent. When the pH comes to be high at 11 degree, the ammonium was not effectively removed.

  • The ion exchangers supported on silica gel containing primary, secondary, or tertiary amine groups show a behaviour that is weakly acidic, while the quaternary salts are strongly acidic. These properties change according to the hydrophilicities of the modifier functional groups. Ammonium salt derivatives supported on silica gel were prepared from silica modified with 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysiliane and N-3-(Trimethoxysilyl)propylehtylene diamine. The preparation and the ion exchange properties of two systems were discussed. Two systems have different hydrophilicities and contain ammonium chloride derivatives of 3-amminopropyltriethoxysilane and N-3-(triehtoxysilyl)propyl ethylene diamine supported on silica gel, $SA^+/Cl^-$ and $SA^+/Cl^-$, respectively. The high affinity to perchlorate ion presented by the $SA^+/Cl^-$ through the equilibrium studies of ion exchange led us to its application as an ion selective electrode for the perchlorate ion. The determination of the perchlorate ion in the presence of other anions and in complexes is very difficult. Few analytical methods are available and most of them are indirect. Both materials showed potential use as an ion exchanger; they are thermically stable, achieve equilibrium rapidly in the presence of suitable exchanger ions, and are easily recovered.

  • A new method for the simultaneous determination of low molecular weight amines and quaternary ammonium ions based on the separation by IC with a suppressor and the detection by MS with ESI has been developed. The method has been applied to the analysis of a mixture containing tetramethylammonium ion, tetraethylammonium ion, tetrapropylammonium ion, triethanolamine, trimethylamine and triethylamine. The constituents were separated by isocratic elution using an IonPac CS17 column, a cation-exchange column, and detected by conductivity and mass spectrometry. The newly developed method for the six components demonstrated that the repeatability in terms of relative standard deviation for three measurements was in the range of 0.1-0.5 %. The detection limits were between 0.2 and $0.9{\mu}g/mL$ by the IC/ESI-MS.

  • These studies carried out to know the effect of ammonium on the current generation in the microbial fuel cells (MFCs). MFCs used in the study were enriched with anaerobic digestion sludge and operated for 3 years using artificial wastewater (AWW). When the current was stably generated, ammonium ion with $27.0{\pm}0.0$, $51.5{\pm}0.0$, $103.5{\pm}0.0mg/L$ with acetate fed into the anode compartment. The current values under condition included ammonium were changed from its initial $6.30{\pm}0.06$ to $6.28{\pm}0.36$, $5.95{\pm}0.61$, $5.64{\pm}0.38mA$, respectively. The current value was slightly decreased to $5.64{\pm}0.38mA$ compared to $6.30{\pm}0.06mA$ generated from MFC without ammonium ion in the AWW. But After 3days operating under ammonium concentration with $103.5{\pm}0.0mg/L$, the current was unstably generated when artificial wastewater without ammonium was fed again. MFC enriched with AWW without ammonium ion was inhibited by high concentration of ammonium. At this time, the ammonium was removed 5.27~16.41 mg per day under all conditions.

  • A high cell density culture system for the anchorage dependent CHO cells was developed based on the combination of in removal of ammonium ion and microcarrier culture system, and semi-fed-batch feeding of glucose and glutamine was employed to the developed culture system. The glass bead was selected as an optimum microcarrier in terms of cell growth. An ammonium ion selective zeolite, Phillipsite-Gismondine, was packed in a dialysis menium ion. The semi-fed-batch operation was employer to the novel culture system for the high density cell culture, and the results showed the cell growth was improved by 32% and tPA productivity by 250%.

  • The fragmentation pattern of four hindered phenol antioxidants was investigated using ammonium and lithium ions as the additives for ionization. Due to different binding geometries and interactions, they underwent different characteristic fragmentation reactions providing useful complementary information for structural analysis of hindered phenol antioxidants. Ammonium ion adducts were fragmented successively until all t-butyl groups were lost in the form of isobutylene and allowed the estimation of the number of t-butyl groups present in the molecule. Lithium ion adducts produced fragment ions from major backbone cleavage, on the other hand, which provide more crucial information for the identification of detailed backbone structure.

  • Batch suspension cultures of hybridoma cell were performed with various initial glutamine concentrations to investigate the effects of glutamine on cell growth and death, monoclonal antibody production, glucose and glutamine consumption, and the production of lactate and ammonium ion. An mathematical kinetic model was formulated to describe the kinetics of cell growth, the consumption of nutrients (glucose and glutamine), and the production of monoclonal antibody and waste metabolites (lactate and ammonium ion) based on experimental data. An equation for the specific growth rate was developed such that superimposed Monod equation in glucose and glutamine, with non-competitive type inhibition relations in ammonium ion and lactate. The inhibition constant for lactate was inversely proportional to the lactate concentration. The specific death rate was considered to be a function of glucose, glutamine, ammonium ion and lactate concentration.
