  • Selective leaching processes for copper, gold, nickel, and cobalt have been investigated because there is an advantage of ammoniacal hydrometallurgy that metal such as copper could be selectively extracted restricting the dissolution of iron or calcium. In the present article, the studies for selective ammoniacal leaching of copper from motor scraps and waste printed circuit boards (PCBs), for ammoniacal leaching of gold to decrease the amount of cyanide used or to substitute cyanide by thiosulfate, and for ammoniacal leaching to recover nickel and cobalt from nickel oxide ore and intermidiate obtained from manganese nodule treatment process were summarized and further studies were proposed for domestic technology development for ammoniacal hydrometallurgy processes.

  • Recycling technologies would be required in consideration of increasing demand in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, the leaching behavior of Ni, Co and Mn is investigated with ammoniacal medium for spent cathode active materials, which are separated from a commercial LIB pack in hybrid electric vehicles. The leaching behavior of each metal is analyzed in the presence of reducing agent and pH buffering agent. The existence of reducing agent is necessary to increase the leaching efficiency of Ni and Co. The leaching of Mn is insignificant even with the existence of reducing agent in contrast to Ni and Co. The most conspicuous difference between acid and ammoniacal leaching would be the selective leaching behavior between Ni/Co and Mn. The ammoniacal leaching can reduce the cost of basic reagent that makes the pH of leachate higher for the precipitation of leached metals in the acid leaching.

  • As a basic study on recovery of valuable metals such as vanadium and nickel from metal oxide obtained from waste orimulsion ash, we conducted selectively leaching of vanadium and nickel using $Na_2CO_3$ leaching and ammoniacal leaching, respectively. The 97% of vanadium was selectively leached at an optimum experimental condition, 50g/L $Na_2CO_3$, pulp density 50g/L, and 35% $H_2O_2$ 50ml/L, $25^{\circ}C$... for 1 hr, whereas no nickel was leached. In ammoniacal leaching study, 95% of nickel was selectively leached at the optimal experimental condition, $NH_4OH\;2M,\;(NH_4){_2}SO_4$ 1.5M, pulp density 50g/L, 25, for 4 hr along with 3% of vanadium.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the solubility of vanadium in ammoniacal solution and precipitation of $NH_4VO_3$ as a function of temperature and addition of ammonia salt. Higher solution temperature is required to get high solubility of vanadium and the vanadium concentration of solution was 16.8g/L at $90^{\circ}C$ with the solution of 20 g/L $(NH_4)_2CO_3$ and 2.5M $NH_4OH$. From this solution, vanadium could be precipitated up to 99.8% with adding 20 g/L $NH_4Cl$, 72 hours settling time at $25^{\circ}C$.
