  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of the mixture of probiotics (MP) on growth performance, size of small intestine, cecal microflora and ammonia concentrations in broiler chicks. A total of 700, one-day-old male broiler chicks were randomly allotted to four treatments with seven replications having 25 birds per pen. The birds were fed one of the four experimental diets; containing no antibiotics nor MP (negative control, NC), containing antibiotics without MP(positive control, PC), negative control with MP 0.1% and negative control with MP 0.2% for 5 weeks. During overall experiment, birds in PC and MP treatments had higher final BW and daily BW gains than birds in NC treatments; however, the significance was not identified. The feed conversion ratio of the chicks fed the diet containing MP was significantly improved as compared to those fed the NC diets. The weights of jejunum were increased by the MP (p<0.05), but weights of duodenum, ileum and length of small intestine were similar among the groups. Birds in PC treatment showed lower populations of total microbes and lactic acid bacteria than other groups (p<0.05), cecal ammonia concentrations of the chicks fed the diet containing MP were significantly decreased as compared to those of NC and PC (p<0.01). In conclusion, MP added to the broiler diets improved the feed conversion rate and reduced cecal ammonia concentration.

  • In this study, a fibrous bed bioreactor (FBB) was used for $\small{D}$-lactic acid ($\small{D}$-LA) production by Sporolactobacillus inulinus Y2-8. Corn flour hydrolyzed with ${\alpha}$-amylase and saccharifying enzyme was used as a cost-efficient and nutrient-rich substrate for $\small{D}$-LA production. A maximal starch conversion rate of 93.78% was obtained. The optimum pH for $\small{D}$-LA production was determined to be 6.5. Ammonia water was determined to be an ideal neutralizing agent, which improved the $\small{D}$-LA production and purification processes. Batch fermentation and fed-batch fermentation, with both free cells and immobilized cells, were compared to highlight the advantages of FBB fermentation. In batch mode, the $\small{D}$-LA production rate of FBB fermentation was 1.62 g/l/h, which was 37.29% higher than that of free-cell fermentation, and the $\small{D}$-LA optical purities of the two fermentation methods were above 99.00%. In fe$\small{D}$-batch mode, the maximum $\small{D}$-LA concentration attained by FBB fermentation was 218.8 g/l, which was 37.67% higher than that of free-cell fermentation. Repeate$\small{D}$-batch fermentation was performed to determine the long-term performance of the FBB system, and the data indicated that the average $\small{D}$-LA production rate was 1.62 g/l/h and the average yield was 0.98 g/g. Thus, hydrolyzed corn flour fermented by S. inulinus Y2-8 in a FBB may be used for improving $\small{D}$-LA fermentation by using ammonia water as the neutralizing agent.

  • In Korea, more than 70% of the ammonia(NH3) released into the atmosphere is known to originate from livestock manure. The total emission (kg year-1) is calculated by multiplying the emission factor (kg head-1 yr-1) and the activity data (head). To improve the accuracy and reliability of the NH3 emission estimation process, an accurate account of livestock manure production, calculation of NH3 conversion and generation during the composting and liquefaction of manure, estimation of NH3 generation in the storage and transportation of manure and compost, and a comparative study of NH3 emission during the soil spreading process must be performed. Compared to the US and EU-28, in particular, the domestic emission factor is relatively even and the spatial/temporal scale is not broken down sufficiently to reflect the domestic situation. As a way to improve the accuracy and expertise of estimating NH3 emission factors, a 'dynamic chamber-capture system' can be utilized, which allows complex considerations of compost, liquid manure, soil, and climate characteristics. By reviewing and comparing the data related to domestic and foreign NH3 emission, we identified shortcomings in the current domestic system and the directions to be taken and suggested a chamber system that could estimate NH3 emission flux. It is also necessary to establish a methodology for mesocosm systems in the field, in addition to indoor chamber systems, to be linked with practical policies, such as the calculation of new emission factors for missing sources.

  • An Experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of Natufermen$^{(R)}$;(Aspergillus oryzae) supplementation on the performance, ammonia gas production, microbial population in manure and serum IgG in pigs. Forty eight cross bred(YLD) weanling pigs(35d old) were assigned to 4 treatments; Control(C), $C^+$ Natufermen 0.1%, $C^+$ Natufermen 0.2% $C^+$natufermen 0.3% for 6 week feeding trial. Each treatment had 4 replications of 3 pigs each. Natufermen$^{(R)}$ supplemented treatments tended to increase ADG and ADFI, but there were no significant differences among treatments. Supplementation of Natufermen$^{(R)}$ at the level of 0.2% improved ADFI/ADG(P<0.05). Ammonia gas production from manure was not significantly affected by treatments. All Natufermen$^{(R)}$ treatments increased in DM, crude ash and phosphorus digestibility(P<0.05). Serum IgG decreased as supplemention level of Natufermen$^{(R)}$ increased(P<0.05). Supplemtation of Natufermen$^{(R)}$ at 0.1% and 0.2% increased fecal Lactobacilli population at 3 wks after feeding treated diets(P<0.05). It is concluded that supplementation of Aspergillers oryzae product Natufermen$^{(R)}$ improved feed conversion ratio and digestibility of DM, crud ash and phosphours. Fecal ammonia gas production was not significantly affected but serum IgG level was decreased and CFU of fecal Lactobacilli was increased at 3 wks after feeding Natufermen$^{(R)}$ supplemented diets.

  • In this paper, performance characteristics of cycles were studied when mixed working fluid was used for ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC). Among the various mixed refrigerants for industrial heat-pump, R32/R152a used in ocean thermal energy conversion system. For simulations, R32/R152a were used in existing closed cycle and Kalina cycle which is used only ammonia and water as mixed refrigerant. Temperature of the warm heat source was 26 and 29 celsius degree, temperature of the cold heat source was 5 celsius degree. In results of simulation, Gross power of the closed cycle on R32 was 22kW, and efficiency of the cycle was 2.02%. When the mixed refrigerant of R32/R152a, in the ratio of 90 to 10, gross power of the closed cycle was 29.93kW, and efficiency of the cycle was 2.78%. Gross power and cycle efficiency of R32/R152a increased by 36% and 37% than those of existing single refrigerant. Additionally, the same simulations were conducted in Kalina cycle with the same various composition ratio of mixed refrigerant.

  • Physiological changes in thoroughbred racehorses during the race were investigated by measuring concentrations of metabolites and exercise-related hormones before and after a race. The conversion point from anaerobic to aerobic exercise during the race was estimated subsequently. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein of 53 thoroughbreds at different times -three h before and 45 min after- for measuring the concentrations of glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), lactate, uric acid, ammonia, insulin, adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH) and cortisol according to the race distance. In accordance with the race distance, each metabolite increased in concentration compared with the level before the race. The level of glucose, in particular, increased from $56.18{\pm}3.20$ mg/dl before the race to $148.82{\pm}8.82$ mg/dl after the race for horses that raced 1,400 m, showing a significant increase of 165% (p<0.001). The concentration of NEFA rose from $76.77{\pm}5.59$ uEq/L to $335.85{\pm}35.39$ uEq/L, up 337% (p<0.01) after a 1,400 m race. Exercise-related hormones also showed similar changes. The level of insulin dropped the most in horses that raced 1,400 m, by 42%, from $0.97{\pm}0.18$ to $0.56{\pm}0.05\;{\mu}g/L$ (p<0.5); however, ACTH and cortisol jumped significantly at 1,800 m, from $20.17{\pm}2.12$ to $551.45{\pm}91.33$ pg/ml (p<0.5) and $1.13{\pm}0.16$ to $5.66{\pm}0.45\;{\mu}g/dl$ (p<0.01), respectively, representing the highest increase. Therefore, based on the changes in glucose, NEFA and insulin levels before and after the race, it was concluded that the race distance of 1,400 m represents the point where racehorses make a conversion from anaerobic to aerobic exercise.

  • In this study, the study of the selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) for controlling the $NH_3$ at $200{\sim}350^{\circ}C$ range was investigated. Physicochemical properties of the catalysts were determined using XRD and XPS analysis. In the case of catalytic activity according to thermal treatment condition, the reduction catalyst showed better activity than that of using the calcination catalyst. It was confirmed that the valence state of reduction catalyst was mainly $Pt^{2+}$ and $Pt^0$ as analyzed by XPS. Also, when comparing the reaction activities of $Pt/TiO_2$ catalysts according to the reduction temperature, the $NH_3$ conversion of the catalyst reduced at $700^{\circ}C$ showed the most excellent activity. However, the best activity of $NH_3$ conversion to $N_2$ was obtained for the catalyst reduced at $600^{\circ}C$.

  • The effect of acidity and the metal surface area of the Pd loaded zeolite catalysts; prepared from $Ca^{2+}-,\;La^{3+}-,\;NH_4^+-$exchanged Y and dealuminated HY was studied for the reaction of n-butane. The amount of strong acid site determined by the temperature programmed desorption of ammonia increased in the order NaY < CaY < LaY. Total amount of acid site decreased with increasing degree of dealumination, but the portion of strong acid site increased with increasing $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio. The effective metal surface area determined by the CO adsorption technique was large for those zeolite catalysts having strong acidity. It was found that conversion of n-butane was strongly dependent on the acidity and the effective metal surface area of the catalysts. The fact that the conversion of n-butane was proportional to the effective metal surface area suggests that the dehydrogenation by metallic component is the primary step in the reaction of n-butane.

  • We fabricated quantum dot sensitized solar cells(QDSSC) using PbS as a sensitizer and measured the solar energy conversion efficiency. After growing ZnO nanowires on the substrate by low temperature ammonia solution reaction, PbS QDs were deposited on ZnO nanowires by SILAR(Successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction) method. The morphology and crystallinity of PbS/ZnO nanowires were studied by SEM and XRD. In this study, the maximum conversion efficiency of QDSSC using PbS was 0.075% at one sun, which was lower than that of QDSSC using other sensitizers. The reasons it showed relatively low efficiency are i) the probability of type-I band gap arrangement between ZnO and PbS, ii) disturbance of electron migration by the various-sized PbS band gap, iii) stability dip by the chemical reaction of PbS QDs with electrolyte. To solve these problems, researches about controlling the size distribution of PbS and new type electrolyte would be needed.

  • An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of mineral extract from granite on the performance, ammonia production from the litter, components of blood, Newcastle Disease (ND) titer and intestinal microflora in broiler chickens. Nine hundred sixty one-day-old broiler chickens (Ross) were assigned to five treatments: C; control, Zeolite; control + zeolite 1$\%$, AM10: control + active mineral water $10\%$ adsorbed zeolite $1\%$, AM20; control + active mineral water $20\%$ adsorbed zeolite $1\%$ and AM30; control + active mineral water $30\%$ adsorbed zeolite $1\%$. Each treatment consisted of four replicates with 48 broiler chicks for feeding trial. In order to test the effect of ND vaccine on the components of blood, ND titer and intestinal microflora, a separate group of 48 broiler chicks were assigned to the same 5 treatment as the feeding trial plus one negative control (No ND vaccine). Weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion and mortality were not significantly affected by dietary treatments but AM30 tended to be higher than other treatments in weight gain and feed intake, especially during later period (4 to 5 weeks of age). Ammonia production from the litter of AM30 treatment was significantly (P<0.01) lower than the control. Components of blood and ND titer in serum of broiler chickens were not significantly affected by treatments but MCHC (mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration) of blood was significantly lower (P<0.05) in Zeolite treatment compared to others. The colony forming unit (CFU) of Clostridium perfringens in the small intestinal content of all zeolite and AM treated groups was significantly (P<0.01) lower than the control while the CFU of Escherichia coli was not significantly affected. The CFU of Lactobacilli in AM30 treatment was significantly (P<0.05) higher than the control. In conclusion, dietary supplement of active mineral water adsorbed to zeolite at $30\%$ level (AM30) tended to improve growth performance of broiler chickens and significantly reduced ammonia production from the litter. It also significantly increased CFU of intestinal Lactobacilli.
