  • Evaluating amino acid requirements, specifically threonine requirements, in horses will enable better feed formulation and result in economic production, improved animal health, and reduced environmental pollution. However, the current knowledge of protein and amino acid requirements in horses is still limited. Because horses have a unique digestive system and consume a variety of feed ingredients, their protein digestibility may be affected than other species by different feed composition, and thus amino acid requirements are susceptible to vary between situations. Therefore, a careful evaluation of amino acid requirements with a proper method is needed for various conditions. This review will also provide comprehensive information that needs to be considered when designing an amino acid requirement study in horses.

  • The metabolites of marine mollusk Mytilus edulis were isolated and characterized, revealing the presence of the rare free fatty acids and proteinogenic amino acids together with a non-proteinogenic free amino acid, taurine. The free fatty acids in this organism were particularly interesting for the presence of both unusual n-6 acid [20:4 (n-6)] and triple bond containing acid (2,5-octadecadiynoic acid). In addition to the proteinogenic amino acids commonly found in proteins, non-proteinogenic free amino acid taurine was isolated and the structure was determined by its physicochemical properties. Recently taurine has been given much interest in the molecular level because of diverse biological activities and the medicinal properties. Furthermore, the result of the analyses of analyses of free amino acids showed that glycine, glutamic acid, serine and alanine, which were considered to be related to the taste of this organism, are predominantly present.

  • Novel binol-based uryl and guanidinium receptors having higher ring conjugation at the periphery of the hydrogen bonding donor sites have been synthesized and utilized to study the enantioselective recognition of 1,2-aminoalcohols and chirality conversion of natural amino acids via imine bond formation. There is a remarkable decrease in the stereoselectivites as the conjugation increases at the periphery of hydrogen bonding donor sites. The guanidinium-based receptors show more selectivity towards the amino alcohol than that of the uryl based ones due to its charge reinforced hydrogen bonds. The conversion efficiency of L-amino acids to Damino acids by the uryl-based receptors is higher than that of the guanidinium-based ones.

  • The effects of his ($\beta$-amino-ethyl-oxo) oxalate and bis ($\alpha$-amino-methyl-oxo) oxalate on the toxicity of lead acetate in rast were examined. Rats were given intraperitoneally at the dose of lead acetate 45 mg/kg. The exposure of lead acetate showed the 70% decrease of ALAD ($\delta$-amino levulinic acid dehydratase) activity in red blood cell. In vivo 122 mg/kg administration of bis ($\beta$-amino-ethyl-oxo) oxalate and bis ($\alpha$-amino-methyl-oxo) oxalate showed the 50% increase of ALAD activity, whereas 149 mg/kg administeration of Ca-EDTA had no effect. In vitro, the same results were obtained. Both compounds had hemolytic activity at concentrations higher than that required for showing the 50% ALAD activity increase in vivo.

  • This study was performed to investigate the placental transfer and the human fetal utilization of amino acids at term of pregnancy. The plasma levels of 23 free amino acids in both the umbilical circulation ( umbilical vein and artery ) and the uterine circulation ( uterine vein and iliac artery ) of 34 pregnant women were measured at delivery by the cesarean section. In the umbilical circulation, 9 amino acids ( alanine, lysine, valine, leucine, arginine, isoleucine, ornithine, cystine, ${\alpha}-aminobutyrate$ ) were significantly higher and 2 amino acids ( glutamate, aspartate ) were significantly lower in the umbilical vein than in the umbilical artery. In the uterine circulation, alanine, tyrosine and methionine were significantly lower in the uterine vein than in the iliac artery. Glutamate was significantly lower in the uterine vein than in the iliac artery. According to these results, the origin of fetal plasma amino acids was discussed in terms of the metabolic conversions which would occur in the Placenta and the fetal utilization of amino acids was estimated.

  • The nutritional significance of essential amino acids, as well as non-essential amino acids, is well documented in poultry production with regards to growth performance and protein accretion. However, the function of amino acids in the stress response is still unclear. L-Pipecolic acid, a L-lysine metabolite in the brain, induced a hypnotic and sedative effect acting via the ${\gamma}$- aminobutyric acid receptors. L-Arginine also induced a sedative effect via its metabolism to L-ornithine. In addition, three-carbon nonessential amino acids like L-alanine, L-serine and L-cysteine also induced sedative effects. These facts suggest that the requirement for amino acids in both essential and non-essential types may require reconsideration to add the concept of stress amelioration in the future.

  • The essential amino acids composition of Green algae (chlorella ellipsoidea) that was isolated near the suwon was compared with that of soy flour and the provisional pattern of amino acids of reference protein of FAO and found that the limit amino acid was methionine. The rest of essential amino acids were distributed widely and abunduntly. While soy flour was defficient in methionine and valine on comparing with the provisional pattern. Slightly more content of methionine was recognized in chlorella protein than that of spirulina maxima which was reported to be eaten in the Lake Chard region of Africa and Mexico as a daily food. It was concluded that good quality protein is able to be synthesised from the wild alage if a qualified alage media was given to them.

  • This study was undertaken to examine the effect of amino acids on anoxia-induced cell injury in rabbit renal cortical slices. In order to induce anoxic cell injury, slices were exposed to a 100% $N_2$ atmosphere and control slices were exposed to 100% $O^2$. Irreversible cell injury was estimated by measuring lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release and alterations in renal cell function were examined by measuring p-aminohippurate (PAH) uptake. Anoxia caused the increase in LDH release in a time-dependent manner. Glycine and glutathione almost completely prevented anoxia-induced LDH release. Of amino acids tested, glycine and alanine exerted the protective effect against anoxia-induced cell injury. However, asparagine with amide side chain, leucine and valine with hydrocarbon side chain, and basic amino acids (lysine, histidine, and arginine) were not effective. Anoxia-induced inhibition of PAM uptake was prevented by glycine. ATP content was decreased by anoxia, which was not affected by glycine. Anoxia-induced depletion of glutathione was significantly prevented by glycine. These results suggest that neutral amino acids with simple structure exert the Protective effect against anoxia-induced cell injury the involvement of specific interaction of amino acids and cell structure.

  • For the effective utilization of apricot seed resources of food protein and lipid, the general composition, amino acid composition and chemical characteristics were analysed. The skinned and non-skinned apricot seed contained 53.9% and 48.0% of crude lipid, 24.7% and 26.8% of crude protein, respectively. There were no significant difference in the amino acid composition among skinned and non-skinned apricot seed, The major amino acids were glutamic acid, aspartic acid, alanine, tyrosine and threonine, holding 14.6 to 16.9%, 12.4 to 13.7%, 9.2 to 12.1%, 7.2 to 7.5% and 7.0 to 7.2% of total amino acid content, respectively. The sum of these ammo acids occupied about 50% to total amino acids. While the quantities of methionine, histidine, and Lysine were poor content. The essential amino acids occupied about 30% to total amino acids. The acid, iodine and saponification value of apricot seed oil were 0.7 to 7.1, 80.8 to 107.5 and 182.7 to 208.4, respectively. These values were significant difference in skinned and non-skinned apricot seed.
