  • A study has been conducted to clarify the effect of watery vapor concentration in hot ambient on droplet evaporation. Droplets of water, ethanol, n-hexadecaneand n-heptane were used in this experimental study. Ambient conditions are fixed at 470 K in temperature, 0.1 MPa in pressure and 2 m/s in velocity of ambient air. Watery vapor concentration was changed 0%~40% by 10% by add water to air. To obtain the time histories of droplet diameter after exposed in ambient, a suspended droplet in hot and humid ambient stream was synchronized with a back flash light, and enlarged droplet images were taken by a CCD camera. The evaporation rate constant of water droplet decreases slightly with the vapor concentration because diffusion velocity reduction of droplet vapor occurs on the surface. The values of ethanol and n-heptane droplet actively increase by effect that water from condensation of vapor flows into the droplet. The evaporation rate constant of n-hexadecane which has higher boiling point than water increases within around 30% of the concentration.

  • The aim of this investigation is to study the effect of the high injection pressure on the dimethyl ether (DME) spray characteristics injected through a common-rail diesel injector under various ambient pressures. In order to investigate the effect of the injection pressure and ambient condition, the common-rail injection system with two high pressure pumps and high pressure chamber pressurized up to 40 bar were used, respectively. Spray images of DME fuel obtained from a visualization system composed of high speed camera and two metal halide lamps as the light source. From the obtained images, the spray behaviors such as a spray development process, spray tip penetration, spray width, and spray cone angle were measured for analyzing the DME spray characteristics under various experimental conditions. It was found that the spray development slowed as the ambient pressure increased and spray tip penetration at injection pressure of 90 MPa is longer than that at 50 MPa. In addition, the spray width at the end stage of injection decreased under the atmospheric conditions due to the evaporation property of DME fuel, and DME spray shows narrow spray cone angle according to the injection pressure increased.

  • Nondispersive infrared CO2 gas sensor was developed after the simulation of optical cavity structure and assembling the optical components: IR source, concave reflectors, Fresnel lens, a hollow disk, and IR detectors. By placing a hollow disk in front of reference IR detector, the output voltages are almost constant value, near to 70.2 mV. The absorbance of IR light, Fa, shows the second order of polynomial according to ambient temperatures at 1,500 ppm. The differential output voltages and the absorbance of IR light give a higher accuracy in estimations of CO2 concentrations with less than ± 1.5 % errors. After implementing the parameters that are dependent upon the ambient temperatures in microcontroller unit (MCU), the measured CO2 concentrations show high accuracies (less than ± 1.0 %) from 281 K to 308 K and the time constant of developed sensor is about 58 sec at 301 K. Even though the estimation errors are relatively high at low concentration, the developed sensor is competitive to the commercial product with a high accuracy and the stability.

  • This study was conducted to assess the effect of mixed fuel composition and mass fraction on spray inner structure in evaporating transient spray under the various ambient conditions. Spray structure and spatial distribution of liquid phase concentration are investigated using a thin laser sheet illumination technique on the multi-component mixed fuels. A pulsed Ar+ laser was used as a light source. The experiments were conducted in a constant volume vessel with optical access. Fuel was injected into the vessel with electronically controlled common rail injector. Used fuel contain $i-octane(C_8H_{18}),\;n-dodecane(C_{12}H_{26})$ and $n-hexadecane(C_{16}H_{34})$ that are selected as low-, middle- and high-boiling point fuel, respectively. Experimental conditions are 25Mpa, 42MPa, 72MPa and 112MPa in injection pressure, $5kg/m^3,\;15kg/m^3\;and\;20kg/m^3$ in ambient gas density, 400K, 500K, 600K and 700K in ambient gas temperature, 300K and 368K in fuel temperature, and different fuel mass fraction. Experimental results indicate that the more high-boiling point component, the longer the liquid phase it were closely related to fuel physical properties, but injection pressure had no effect on. And there was a high correlation between the liquid phase length and boiling temperature at 75% distillation point.

  • To improve the image quality and lower the power consumption of the mobile applications, it is the one of the best candidate to control the backlight unit of the LCD module with ambient light. Ambient light sensor and readout circuit were integrated in LCD panel for the mobile applications, and we designed them with LTPS TFT. We proposed noble start-up correction in order to correct the variation of the photo sensors in each panel. We used time-to-digital method for converting photo current to digital data. To effectively merge time-to-digital method with start-up correction, we proposed noble dual slope correction method. The entire readout circuit was designed and estimated with LTPS TFT process. The readout circuit has very simple and stable structure and timing, so it is suitable for LTPS TFT process. The readout circuit can correct the variation of the photo sensors without an additional equipment, and it outputs the 4-levels digital data per decade for input luminance that has a dynamic range of 60dB. The readout rate is 100 times/sec, and the linearity error for digital conversion is less than 18%.

  • The purpose of this study is to extract the major factors related to the deterioration mechanism of white organic light-emitting diodes(WOLED) by performing accelerated testing of temperature, voltage, time, etc., and to develop an accelerated life test(ALT) model. The measurement results of the brightness of the WOLED exhibited that their average brightness tended to increase as the operating voltage increased and that the half-life period of the brightness appeared after approximately 400 hours when the operating voltage was 20V and the ambient temperature was $85^{\circ}C$. It could be seen that although the WOLED showed comparatively the same brightness when the initial acceleration began after the operating voltage was applied to it, its brightness changed excessively after the WOLED's thermal storage had been made. In addition, it was observed that the half-life period was reduced as the ambient temperature and applied voltage increased. The strength of the WOLED which had been maintained in the range of visible light at the maximum load was reduced by the deterioration of the organic light emitting material due to the influence of the operating voltage and temperature, and the reduction of emitted light was small at low voltage and temperature. It could be seen that the failure of the WOLED during the ALT was caused by wear due to load accumulation over time, and that Weibull distribution was appropriate for the life distribution and acceleration was established between test conditions. From the WOLED analysis, it is thought that factors influencing the brightness deterioration are voltage, temperature, etc., and that comprehensive analysis considering discharge control, dielectric tangent margin, etc., would further increase the reliability.

  • In this paper, we propose an ambient light control method based on the difference of image frames in video. The proposed method is composed of three steps. 1) The first step is to extract a dominant color of a current frame. 2) The second step is to compute the amount of change and the representative color in the changed region using the difference image. 3) The third step is to make a new representative color. The difference image is created from two images transformed into the YUV color space. The summed color difference of each pixel is used for the amount of change. The new representative color is created by synthesizing the current color and the changed color in proportion to the amount of change. We compare the variations of the light effect according to time with and without the proposed method for the same video. The result shows that the new method generates more dynamic light effects.

  • Originally, the reference white of the NTSC system used to be CIE illuminant C of 6774K. However, that of color television receiver has been adjusted to 9300K as a result of consumer preference for a very bluish white for monochrome television. Recent studies have revealed that the preferred color temperature of display white should be 3000K or 4000K higher than that of surround illuminant. Therefore it is required to classify ambient lighting source. In this paper, a efficient method that can distinguish the ambient incandescent lamp from fluorescent lamp under television viewing condition is developed using only two color sensors, yellow and cyan. Experimental results show that the proposed method is very useful for the discrimination of ambient lighting source, fluorescent of 6000K and incandescent lamp of 3000K. The system was also tested for mixture of these light sources.

  • Leaf senescence is a developmental process by which a plant actively remobilizes nutrients from aged and photosynthetically inefficient leaves to young growing ones by disassembling organelles and degrading macromolecules. Senescence is accelerated by age and environmental stresses such as prolonged darkness. Phytochrome B (phyB) inhibits leaf senescence by inhibiting phytochrome-interacting factor 4 (PIF4) and PIF5 in prolonged darkness. However, it remains unknown whether phyB mediates the temperature signal that regulates leaf senescence. We found the light-activated form of phyB (Pfr) remains active at least four days after a transfer to darkness at 20℃ but is inactivated more rapidly at 28℃. This faster inactivation of Pfr further increases PIF4 protein levels at the higher ambient temperature. In addition, PIF4 mRNA levels rise faster after the transfer to darkness at high ambient temperature via a mechanism that depends on ELF3 but not phyB. Increased PIF4 protein then binds to the ORE1 promoter and activates its expression together with ABA and ethylene signaling, accelerating leaf senescence at high ambient temperature. Our results support a role for the phy-PIF signaling module in integrating not only light signaling but also temperature signaling in the regulation of leaf senescence.

  • This paper proposes an illuminant-adaptive reproduction method using light adaptation and flare conditions for a mobile display. Displayed images in daylight are perceived as quite dark due to the light adaptation of the human visual system, as the luminance of a mobile display is considerably lower than that of an outdoor environment. In addition, flare phenomena decrease the color gamut of a mobile display and de-saturating the chroma. Therefore, this paper presents an enhancement method composed of lightness enhancement and chroma compensation. First, the ambient light intensity is measured using a lux-sensor, then the flare is calculated based on the reflection ratio of the display device and the ambient light intensity. To improve the perceived image, the image's luminance is transformed by linearization of the response to the input luminance according to the ambient light intensity. Next, the displayed image is compensated according to the physically reduced chroma, resulting from flare phenomena. This study presents a color reproduction method based on an inverse cone response curve and flare condition. Consequently, the proposed algorithm improves the quality of the perceived image adaptive to an outdoor environment.
