  • The focus of this work is placed on the analysis of the mixture formation mechanism under the evaporative diesel spray of impinging and free conditions. As an experimental parameter, ambient gas density was selected. Effects of density variation of ambient gas on liquid and vapor-phase inside structure of evaporation diesel spray were investigated. Ambient gas density was changed between ${\rho}a=5.0\;kg/m^3$ and $12.3\;kg/m^3$. In the case of impinging spray, the spray spreading to the radial direction is larger due to the decrease of drag force of ambient gas in the case of the low density than that of the high density. On the other hand, in the case of free spray, in accordance with the increase in the ambient gas density, the liquid-phase length is getting short due to the increase in drag force of ambient gas. In order to examine the homogeneity of mixture consisted of vapor-phase fuel and ambient gas in the spray, image analysis was conducted with statistical thermodynamics based on the non-dimensional entropy (S) method. In the case of application of entropy analysis to diesel spray, the entropy value always increases. The entropy of higher ambient density is higher than that of lower ambient gas density during initial injection period.

  • The effects of density change of ambient gas on mixture formation process have been investigated in high temperature and pressure field. To analyze the mixture formation process of evaporating diesel spray is important for emissions reduction in actual engines. Ambient gas density was selected as experimental parameter. The ambient gas density was changed from $r_a=5.0kg/m^3\;to\;r_a=12.3kg/m^3$ with a high pressure injection system(ECD-U2). For visualization of the experiment phenomenon, a CVC(Constant Volume Chamber) was used in this study. The ambient temperature and injection pressure are kept as 700K and 72MPa, respectively. The images of liquid and vapor phase in the evaporating free spray were simultaneously taken by exciplex fluorescence method. As experimental results, with increasing ambient gas density, the tip penetration of the evaporating free spray decreases due to the increase in the drag force from ambient gas.

  • Low-density silica gel monolith was synthesized at ambient pressure by surface modification with TMCS and sub-sequent heat treatment. The mechanical thermal and optical properties of gel were studied. Compressive strength and modulus of compression of 350$^{\circ}C$-heated gel with the density of 0.24g/cm3 were 250kPa and 0.2MPa respectively. The thermal conductivity of silica gels synthesized at ambient pressure exhibited 0.02 W/m$.$K for the density of 0.24g/cm3 which is similar to that of the gel via supercritical drying and their main thermal transfer mechanism is considered to be solid and radiation conduction at room temperature. Ambient-dried silica gels were transparent blue showing about 60% of transmittance in the wavelength of 1500-2100nm and typical absorption bands of existing bonds under heat treatment at 350$^{\circ}C$. Medium scale monolity(${\Phi}$=50mm) at ambient pressure could be successfully prepared through total 5-month process period.

  • Entrainment of ambient gas into a transient diesel spray is a crucial factor affecting the following preparation of combustible mixture. In this study, the entrainment characteristics of ambient gas for a non-evaporating transient diesel were investigated using a common-rail injection system. The effects of ambient gas density and nozzle hole geometry were assessed with entrainment coefficient. Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) technique was introduced to measure the entrainment speed of ambient gas into a spray. There appeared a region where the entrainment coefficients remained almost constant while injection rates were still changing. The effect of common-rail pressure, which altered the slope of injection rate curve, was hardly noticed at this region. Entrainment coefficient increased with ambient gas density, that is, the effect of ambient gas density was greater than that of turbulent jet whose entrainment coefficient remained constant. The non-dimensional distance was defined to reflect the effect of nozzle hole diameter and ambient gas density together. The mean value of entrainment coefficient was found to increase with non-dimensional distance from the nozzle tip, which would be suggested as the guideline for the nozzle design.

  • Numerical simulations of n-heptane spray characteristics in a constant volume combustion chamber under diesel engine like conditions with increasing ambient gas density ($14.8-142kg/m^3$) and ambient temperature (800-1000 K) respectively were performed to understand the non-vaporizing and vaporizing spray behavior. The effect of fuel temperature (ranging 273-313 K) on spray characteristics was also simulated. In this simulation, spray modeling was implemented into ANSYS FORTE where the initial spray conditions at the nozzle exit and droplet breakups were determined through nozzle flow model and Kelvin-Helmholtz/Rayleigh-Taylor (KH-RT) model. Simulation results were compared with experimentally obtained spray tip penetration result to examine the accuracy. In case of non-vaporizing condition, simulation results show that with an increment of the magnitude of ambient gas density and pressure, the vapor penetration length, liquid penetration length and droplet mass decreases. On the other hand vapor penetration, liquid penetration and droplet mass increases with the increase of ambient temperature at the vaporizing condition. In case of lower injection pressure, vapor tip penetration and droplet mass are increased with a reduction in fuel temperature under the low ambient temperature and pressure.

  • Experimental investigation of unsteady impinging diesel spray on the flat plate have been carried out using high speed camera and Malvern system. The density ratios of ambient gas to diesel fuel were varied using $N_2$ and Ar gas in the case of 14.9, 21.2, 28.4, 35.1, 40.4, and 50.1. With the increase of gas density ratio, the radial penetration is decreased due to the resistance of the ambient gas. With the increase of the gas density ratio and the distance between nozzle tip and flat plate, the height of spray is increased due to the entrance and circulation. With the increase of gas density ratio, SMD is decreased on the nearby position at the center of flat plate, but SMD is increased on the far position. As the distance between nozzle tip and flat plate is increased, SMD is always decreased.

  • To analyze the mixture formation process of evaporating diesel spray is important for emissions reduction in actual engines. Then the effects of change in density of ambient gas on spray structure in high temperature and pressure field have been investigated in this study. The ambient gas density was changed from ${\rho}_a=5.0kg/m^3$ to ${\rho}_a=12.3kg/m^3$ with CVC(Constant Volume Chamber). Also, simulation study by modified KIVA-II code was conducted and compared with experimental results. The spatial structure of a diesel spray can be verified as 2-regions consisted of liquid with momentum decrease and vapor with large-scale vortex. The calculated results obtained by modified KIVA-II code show good agreements with experimental results.

  • The characteristics of spray has much effect on performance and emissions for automobile, diesel engine, gas turbine and combustion engines. So spray behavior after impinging the wall is very important for prediction the engine performance. This studies examined about impingement spray considering ambient density(18,24,30kg/ms), temperature(293,473K), impingement angle(0,30,45°). The images of impingement spray were obtained by the high speed video camera. After that we analyzed impingement spray characteristics to use this images. In this experiment, we found that 1) The spray width is reduced by increasing the ambient gas density and temperature,2) The growth of downstream is increased by increasing the impingement angle.

  • The instability wave formed near nozzle region grows to vortex with large scale in downstream region of spray. It plays an important role in the fuel-air mixing, combustion process and engine exhaust emissions in direct injection diesel engine. The objective of this study is to analyze effect of variant parameters (injection pressure, ambient gas density, etc.) and fuel properties on spray instability near nozzle region. Spray structure near nozzle region was investigated using a magnification photograph. A pulsed Nd-YAG laser was used as a light source, and image was taken by CCD camera. The following conclusions are drawn from this experimental analysis. In low ambient density, the effect of fuel properties on spray instability near nozzle region is dominant. In high ambient density, the effect of ambient gas on spray instability near nozzle region is dominant. High jet velocity has strong influence on spray instability.

  • In this study, a serial methodology is presented for estimating the effective density of ambient sub-micron aerosol employing lab-made 1 stage low-pressure impactor of Hyun et al. (2015) and SMPS (Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer) together. The effective density from this methodology (Impactor+SMPS) was compared with another methodology (BAM+SMPS) for estimating the effective density employing BAM (Beta-Attenuation Monitor) and SMPS. As a result, the effective density obtained with impactor+SMPS ranged from $0.42g/cm^3$ to $2.36g/cm^3$, while the effective density obtained with BAM+SMPS ranged from $1.01g/cm^3$ to $1.72g/cm^3$. The difference between these results might be caused by the particle loss in the impactor.
