The Study on the Assesment Greenhouse Gases and Air Pollutants of Diesel Vehicle according to Ambient Temperature and Driving Condition (대기온도와 운전조건에 따른 디젤자동차의 차량 온실가스 및 대기오염물질 배출특성에 관한 연구)

  • As the interest on the air pollution is gradually risen up at home and abroad, their vehicle emission regulations have been reinforcing by steps. PM regulation was also reinforced 4times for the last 13years and has been applied to SI vehicles after EURO 5. Additionally, knowing that small particles of PM can easily penetrate deep into lungs PM number was added on the regulation from EURO5+ and is applied to CI vehicles. Also, PN regulation is going to be applied to SI vehicles. But, because the regulation is appled to only a general test mode of each countries that is performed at $25{\pm}5^{\circ}C$, it is unclear whether the regulation can work on the other ambient temperature conditions or not. In this paper, to know that exhaust emission characteristics at the special conditions CI vehicles(CRDi w, w/o DPF) were tested using 5-cycle mode, NEDC mode at 5-ambient temperatures (35, 25, 0, -7 and -15) and the exhaust emission test results were discussed. The results show that the vehicle with DPF emits much low PM(and PM number) on all of the test mode. However, NOx of the other mode was emitted higher than regulation mode. Also. NOx was sharply increased according to decreasing Ambient Temperature.

Evaluation of the Effect of Traffic Control Program on the Ambient Air Quality in Seoul Metropolitan Area Using the Lower Level Stability Index of Atmosphere (하층대기의 연직 안정도 지표를 이용한 차량 2부제의 수도권 대기오염도 저감효과 분석)

  • The effects of Traffic Control Program (TCP) on the ambient urban air quality of SO$_{2}$, NO$_{2}$, O$_{3}$, and PM$_{10}$ were evaluated in Seoul metropolitan area by using the lower atmospheric vertical stability index and daily mean wind speeds. The vertical stability index; temperature lapse rate between 1000 hPa and 850 hPa geopotential height fields, were used to identify daily vertical stability index during the 2002 World Cup period where traffic amount was reportedly reduced to half the number of vehicles. The indicated air quality levels of TCP days were then compared with those of the cases observed with analogous vertical stability during the recent 3 years from 2000 to 2002. The result indicates that the effect of TCP on the primary air pollutants are found to be approximately 39$\%$, 23$\%$ and 20$\%$ lower for SO$_{2}$, NO$_{2}$ and PM$_{10}$, respectively. The secondary air pollutant; ozone, showed relatively smaller decreasing rate (13$\%$) of daily mean concentrations (even increased during the night time). The comparison of daily maximum or peak concentrations reveals that the pronounced decreasing effects of TCP on the ambient air quality for both primary and secondary air pollutants, suggesting that TCP is one of the effective strategies to control peak or higher concentrations for most urban scale air pollutants in and around the Seoul metropolitan area.

A Comparative Study on the Ambient Air Quality Standard Strength among Korea, the U.S.A. and the EU (우리나라, 미국 및 유럽의 대기환경기준 강도에 관한 비교 연구)

  • Based on air quality monitoring data ('10~'14) of Suwon City provided by the Korean Department of Environment, a fundamental statistic for 5 criteria pollutants such as $SO_2$, CO, $NO_2$, $O_3$, and $PM_{10}$ was initially investigated. The purpose of this paper was to review the ambient air quality standards(AAQS) of Korea, the U.S.A. and the EU and further to assess the degree of standard strength by the achievability of the AAQS comparing each national standard. Since the level and the way of standards for each air pollutant are various among countries, it is difficult to determine the degree of relative attainment using the same set of data above. Further when all the areas having bad air quality for a specific pollutant are classified as non-attainment case, it is more difficult to assess the degree of standard strength. Thus we introduced a new concept called the average concentration distance (ACD) to quantitatively estimate the strength. As results, the Korean 1-hr $NO_2$ AAQS is slightly stronger than the US standard and weaker than the EU standard. The Korean $O_3$ standard is strongest; however, the Korean $PM_{10}$ standard is weakest. Furthermore the equivalent levels of 8-hr $O_3$ standards in the U.S.A. and the EU were respectively estimated as 97.5 and 95.7 percentiles of the Korean standard with maintaining the existing standard of 60 ppb.

Comparision of Monoterpene in Ambient Air at Forest and Essential Oil (숲속 공기와 주변 우점수목 정유의 모노테르펜류 분포 비교)

  • The concentration of terpene (18 species) was measured from spring to fall in ambient air and essential oil at three different forests located in Jeollanamdo province. Sampling was conducted at 4-hour-interval a day of each season. In the ambient air, ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene and 2-carene were the most abundant compounds throughout the sampling periods and areas. The highest three-season average concentration of total terpene was 2,597 pptv at Jeamsan(Mt.) in Boseong which was predominantly populated by Pinaceae. The seasonal averages were observed to peak during spring with their max at Palyeongsan(Mt.) in Goheung and Jeamsan(Mt.) in Boseong, and during fall at Woodland in Jangheung. Most of terpenes had diurnal variations with higher concentrations during the daytime, and lower during the nighttime. However in essential oil, the highest annual average concentration of total terpene was $798{\mu}g/dry-g$ at Goheung which was predominantly populated by Chamaecyparis obtusa. Also, the component proportion ratio showed different distribution between ambient air and essential oil. From the results of this study, we suggest that Chamaecyparis obtusa species is more useful, and younger tree is more economical than older one, and spring is the best season for lumbering in order to use essential oil.

The Characteristics of Monoterpene and Air Quality in Ambient Air at Forested Road in Jeollanam-do (전남지역 숲길의 모노테르펜류 농도와 공기질 특성)

  • Three-season field study was conducted to investigate the distribution of monoterpene(10) and air anion in ambient air at five forests. ${\alpha}$-Pinene, camphene, sabinene, ${\beta}$-pinene, myrcene, terpinolene, limonene, 1,8-cineol, linalool, and camphor were quantified in the samples collected. The highest 4-hour mean concentration of total monoterpene were ${\beta}$-pinene+myrcene as 958 pptv at Juknokwon dominated by bamboo and ${\alpha}$-pinene (524 pptv), limonene (445 pptv) at Wood Land and Suncheon Bay, respectively. The seasonal means were observed to peak during spring with their maximum at Wood Land and Seonam Temple and during summer at Juknokwon and Suncheon Bay. The 24 hour concentration mean of atmosphere standards were found with much lower values than those by law. The highest concentrations of air anion were measured $400{\sim}3,000ea{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ through the sites. There is no significant correlation between the concentration of monoterpene and air anion.

Assessing the Health Benefits of the Seoul Air Quality Management Plan Using BenMAP

  • Health benefits from implementing air quality control measures were assessed using the Environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program (BenMAP). BenMAP developed by US EPA is a GIS-based software tool that estimates the health impacts and associated economic values connected with changes in ambient air pollution. Once a set of BenMAP-required data was collected, the health benefits from implementing Seoul Air Quality Management Plan (SAQMP), an official AQ improvement plan for Seoul Metropolitan Area, was assessed using BenMAP. The PM10 concentrations assuming the SAQMP implemented successfully were predicted with the MM5 (Mesoscale Meteorological model version 5)/CMAQ (Community Multiscale Air Quality) model. A PM 10 exposure related premature mortality function was adopted trom a well-known epidemiology study. Economic valuation functions driven from benefit transfer methods were utilized. Through the SAQMP, PM10 concentrations were estimated to be lowered by $15{\mu}g/m^3\;to\;75{\mu}g/m^3$ depending on air quality modeling grids. 5,569 premature deaths (95% CI $3,264{\sim}7,809$ deaths) could be avoided in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. The economic value of the deaths avoided was estimated to $13.2 billion $(95%\;CI\;$890\;million{\sim}$28.2\;billion)$ using the benefit transfer value. BenMAP could be a useful tool for developing effective air quality improvement policy, enabling the policy makers to anticipate the effects of regulatory changes on people's health and the economy.

Influence on the Indoor Air Quality by Ambient Air during the Summer Season (여름철 실외 공기가 실내 공기질에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of thins study was to quantitatively determine the Indoor Infiltration of pollutants of outdoor origin. The relationship between Indoor and outdoor air is dependent, to a large extent. on the rate of k exchange between these two environments. Mean Indoor/outdoor ratios measured from thins study were: 0.70 for HNO3; 1.60 for HNO2: 0.56 far SOg: 1.30 for mf3: 0.96 for PM2.5(dP<2.5mm: 0.89 for SO4a': 0.87 for NO3· and 0.79 for NH4 'Mean Indoor concentrations for PMa s, SO4a., HNO9, NO3 and NIL' were similar to outdoor levels. Indoor HNO2 and mB3 values were h19her than outdoors. However, the Indoor level of SO2 was lower than ambient level.

Development of Relationship between Air Quality and Rain Acidity (대기질 - 강우산성도 관계식의 개발)

  • The simple and precise model for the estimation of rain acidity from the ambient air quality was developed using the theory of wet scrubber and the chemical equilibria of $SO_2, CO_2, and H_2O$ system. From the measured mixing height, and from the developed relationship between NTU (=number of transfer units) and the concentration of $SO_2$(aq) in rain drops, the HTU (= height equivalent to one transfer unit, i.e. mass transfer resistance) was estimated, and validated with the field-measured data. In Seoul, Korea where the effect of $SO_2$ on rainfall acidity is as high as 84% and the average mixing height is 1 km, the average HTU of $SO_2$ system was found to be 191.5m. The important parameters affecting HTU were identified as rainfall intensity and initial ambient concentration of $SO_2$, and their effects on the value of overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient were quantified.
