  • It will be necessary to make proper management plans to preserve the air quality in good level for the public. In order to make these plans, source information and detail emission inventories of the city and near industrial areas should be given. However, lack of the source measurements data makes us more difficult to complete the source inventory. VOC source Inventory could be utilized for the feasibility study to estimate the contribution of VOC sources presenting to the receptor such as residential area. It may give policy maker an idea how to control the air quality, and improve their social environment in the area. This study shows data that measured VOCs concentrations from the local industrial areas in Jeonju during from May 2005 to January 2006. The samples were collected from the near sources in 7 major factories in the industrial park as well as 5 general sources in near city Jeonju area to elucidate the abundances of speciated VOCs and their spacial and temporal distributions depending on source bases. Industrial sources are as follows; chemical, food, paper, wood, metal, non-metal (glass), and painting (coating) industries. The 5 general sources are sampled from tunnel, gasoline gas station, dry cleaning shop, printing (copy) shop, and road pavement working place in urban area. To understand the near source effect at receptor, samples from the 2 receptor sites (one is at center of the industrial complex and the other site is at distance residential area downwind from the center) were collected and analyzed for the comparison to source concentration. The mass contributions of the speciated VOC to total mass of VOCs measured from the different sources and ambient (2 receptors) were presented and discussed.

  • Management and control of ammonia at the sources and ambient largely depend on sampling and measurement techniques. Good sampling and measurement techniques provide high quality data. The main purpose of the study is compare the analytical characteristics of the Indolphenol method which is one of the standard method in Korea with automatic analyzers for continued measuring gaseous ammonia. For comparison with other analytical methods, the verification test was designed to evaluate performance parameters; linearity, absorption efficiency, reproducibility and repeatability test, accuracy, and response time test. $R^2$ of calibration curve using IPM and CLM was very high (value is 1.000), but for EcSM $R^2$ value was estimated to be lower than IPM and CLM (as 0.991). The RSD of the CLM ranged from 0.1 to 2.3% over the nine concentration levels measured, %Ds was 0.1 to 10.7%, and average RA over all the measurements was 3.3%. The RSD of IPM and EcSM was ranged from 1.0 to 8.1, 3.9 to 14.0 respectively, and average RA were 8.71, 4.9% respectively. Rise in response times of EcSM was estimated to be 1 minute. It is found to be more sensitive than response time (which ranged from 2 to 9 minute) of CLM. For ammonia concentration measured using the IPM and the CLM from the same ammonia source, linear regression of IPM versus CLM show a slope of 0.805, an intercept of 637 ppb, and $R^2$ of 0.868.

  • Since the bridge is the main facility of the road that is the core of the civil infrastructure, the bridge is constructed to ensure stability and serviceability during the traffic use. In order to secure the safety of bridges, evaluating the integrity of bridges at present is an important task in the maintenance work of bridges. In general, to evaluate the load carrying capacity of bridges, it is possible to confirm the superimposed behavior and symmetric behavior of bridges by estimating the lateral load distribution factor of the bridges through vehicle loading tests. However, in order to measure the lateral load distribution factor of a commonly used bridge, a static loading test is performed. There is a difficulty in traffic control. Therefore, in this study, the static displacement component of the bridge measured in the dynamic loading test and the ambient vibration test was extracted by using empirical mode decomposition technique. The lateral load distribution was estimated using the extracted static displacement component and compared with the lateral load distribution factor measured in the static loading test.

  • High-pressure flows are ubiquitous in many industrial fields. A representative application is fuel injection using a common-rail control system in diesel engines, where the injection pressure in the injector exceeds 1000 bar. In high-speed injection, the fluid injected through the nozzle undergoes breakup owing to the interaction with the ambient gas. The breakup process influences mixture formation, which in turn influences combustion in diesel engines. Therefore, it is very important to analyze the breakup process of fuel spray. The Reitz and Diwakar model and cascade atomization and breakup (CAB) model were used in this study as sub-models for the numerical analysis of the breakup process of fuel spray. This study aims to precisely analyze the breakup process of spray and to investigate the breakup frequency of the injected fuel. Consequently, it proposes a suitable sub-model for analyzing the breakup process of a diesel spray by using CFX, a commercial CFD program.

  • Preterm children require a controlled environment that is as close as possible to that inside the womb. Incubators are well equipped to fulfill this requirement; however, they are cumbersome and expensive, thereby restricting their portability and availability in less developed and rural areas. This research comprises the development and system validation of a portable incubator. The system consists of a collapsible baby enclosure that can be stowed inside the system base when not in use. The enclosure is made from acrylic such that it is easy to clean and allows unhindered visual observation of the occupant while being robust enough to withstand transit conditions. The system can be powered either by a mains supply or a 12-VDC automobile power supply. Additionally, it has an onboard battery to ensure a continuous supply during transit. A Peltier plate controlled using a microcontroller ensures the desired enclosure temperature irrespective of the ambient temperature. Built-in sensor probes can measure the skin temperature, pulse rate, blood oxygenation level, and ECG of the infant and display them on the system screen. The system function is validated by testing its peak power consumption and the heating and cooling performances of the environment control system.

  • Malaysia, as a tropical rainforest country, enjoys an abundance of bamboo plant that proliferate throughout the country. The application of geopolymer technology has become a trend and preserve the environment from harm. Fly ash geopolymer concrete has low early strength and requires 24 hours for the concrete to harden. Thus, the presence of calcium and potassium content in bamboo ash could remedy this problem. Besides, there is no research regarding the use of bamboo ash as a binder in geopolymer concrete. Therefore, the presence of bamboo ash could improve the research field with the use of agriculture waste in a building construction. This research aim is to use bamboo ash in the production of fly ash geopolymer concrete. The specimens were casted in $100mm{\times}100mm{\times}100mm$ cubes and sodium based activator were used as the alkaline solutions. The binders are formulated with different binder ratio. All test specimens were cured at ambient temperature ($23^{\circ}C-25^{\circ}C$) and 100% fly ash was chosen as control specimen. To determine the mechanical properties of fly sh geopolymer concrete with the presence of bamboo ash, compressive strength test was conducted. The test results depicted that as the percentage of bamboo ash decreases, compressive strength increases. Also, the addition of 5% of bamboo ash into fly ash geopolymer concrete could improve the early strength in 7 days. The results were proven with the result explained by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Therefore, it can be concluded that the addition of bamboo ash improved the properties of fly ash geopolymer concrete at early ages.

  • High voltage pulsed electric fields (PEF) is a promising technology for the nonthermal extraction of effective components from biological materials. Plant cells were ruptured with PEF at ambient or refrigerated temperature for a short treatment time of second or microsecond. Treatments of coarsely ground purple sweet potato (PSP) with PEF(30 kV/cm, 500 Hz) resulted in maximum extraction yield of 65% as compared with 45-50% for control. An increase in electric field strength (from 10kV/cm to 35kV/cm) and frequency (from 100Hz to 500Hz) resulted in increased amount of extracted pigments, but treatment time is not affected on pigment extraction. Starch granules were not detected and large intracellular spaces were visible between the cells on light and scanning election microscopy of PEF treated PSP. This result suggests that PEF have potential to use on extraction of pigments from plant cells.

  • To mitigate vibrations, tuned mass dampers(TMD) are widely used for long span bridges or high-rise buildings. Due to some durability concerns, such as fluid degradation, oil leakage, etc., the alternative solutions, such as the non-contacted eddy current damping (ECD), are proposed for mechanical devices in small scales. In the present study, a new eddy current damping TMD (ECD-TMD) is proposed and developed for large scale civil infrastructure applications. Starting from parametric study on finite element analysis of the ECD-TMD, the new design is enhanced via using the permanent magnets to eliminate the power need and a combination of a copper plate and a steel plate to improve the energy dissipation efficiency. Additional special design includes installation of two permanent magnets at the same side above the copper plate to easily adjust the gap as well as the damping. In a case study, the proposed ECD-TMD is demonstrated in the application of a steel arch bridge to mitigate the wind-induced vibrations of the flexible hangers. After a brief introduction of the configuration and the installation process for the damper, the mitigation effects are measured for the ambient vibration and forced vibration scenarios. The results show that the damping ratios increase to 3% for the weak axis after the installation of the ECD-TMDs and the maximum vibration amplitudes can be reduced by 60%.

  • Objective: Heat stress poses an increasing threat for poultry production. Some amino acids have been found to play critical roles in affording thermotolerance. Recently, it was found that in ovo administration of L-leucine (L-Leu) altered amino acid metabolism and afforded thermotolerance in heat-exposed broiler chicks. Methods: In this study, two doses (35 and $70{\mu}mol/egg$) of L-Leu were administered in ovo on embryonic day 7 to determine their effect on rectal temperature (RT), body weight (BW) and thyroid hormones at hatching. Changes in RT, BW, and thermotolerance in post-hatched chicks were also analyzed. Results: It was found that in ovo administration of L-Leu dose-dependently reduced RT and plasma thyroxine ($T_4$) level just after hatching. In post-hatched neonatal broiler chicks, however, the higher dose of L-Leu administered in ovo significantly increased RT without affecting BW gain. In chicks that had been exposed to heat stress, the RT was significantly lowered by in ovo administration of L-Leu (high dose) in comparison with the control chicks under the same high ambient temperature (HT: $35^{\circ}C{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, 120 min). Conclusion: In ovo administration of L-Leu in a high dose contributed to an increased daily body temperature and afforded thermotolerance under HT in neonatal broiler chicks.

  • Low surface brightness (LSB) dwarf galaxies hold a key to resolve the small-scale problems of Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) paradigm such as missing satellites problem. Many recent studies found LSB dwarf galaxies around massive galaxies beyond Local Group up to 10Mpc. Motivated by this, we can increase the number of them by searching for LSB dwarf galaxies around galaxies up to 40Mpc. We use stacked deep (${\mu}_R{\sim}26.2mag\;arcsec^{-2}$) optical B, R-band images taken from Maidanak 1.5m telescope, one of facilities of Intensive Monitoring Survey of Nearby Galaxies (IMSNG) which monitored nearby galaxies in a day cadence from 2014 to 2016. Extended LSB sources in ambient regions of 16 nearby galaxies are selected using central surface brightness and total R magnitude criteria. After that, 24 LSB dwarf candidates are selected with visual inspection. To identify if the candidates are satellites or not, we are trying to compare the number density of LSB dwarf candidates around massive galaxies with those in Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) wide fields which have no dominant massive galaxies for control sample.
