The thruster is the crucial factor of an underwater vehicle system, because it is the lowest layer in the control loop of the system. In this paper, we propose an accurate and practical thrust modeling for underwater vehicles which considers the effects of ambient flow velocity and angle. In this model, the axial flow velocity of the thruster, which is non-measurable, is represented by ambient flow velocity and propeller shaft velocity. Hence, contrary to previous models, the proposed model is practical since it uses only measurable states. Next, the whole thrust map is divided into three states according to the state of ambient flow and propeller shaft velocity, and one of the borders of the states is defined as Critical Advance Ratio (CAR). This classification explains the physical phenomenon of conventional experimental thrust maps. In addition, the effect of the incoming angle of ambient flow is analyzed, and Critical Incoming Angle (CIA) is also defined to describe the thrust force states. The proposed model is evaluated by comparing experimental data with numerical model simulation data, and it accurately covers overall flow conditions within 2N force error. The comparison results show that the new model's matching performance is significantly better than conventional models'.
Our aim was to investigate the genotoxicity of ambient air in the Krak$\acute{o}$w area after Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) accident and compare with results from Chernobyl fallout. For the detection of ambient air genotoxicity the technique for screening gene mutation frequency in somatic cells of the $Tradescantia$ stamen hairs ($Trad$-SH assay) was used. Since 11th of March 2011 (Fukushima NPP accident), several pots containing at least 15 shoots of bioindicating plants were exposed to ambient air at 2 sites in the Krak$\acute{o}$w surrounding area, one in the city center, and about 100 pots in a control site (in the glasshouse of the Institute of Nuclear Physics) Continuous screening of mutations was performed. Progenies of 371,090 cells exposed were analyzed. Mutation frequency obtained in the first 10 days has shown a mean control level (GMF*100=$0.06{\pm}0.01$). At scoring period related to influence of a potential Fukushima fallout, a significant increase of gene mutation frequencies above the control level was observed at each site in the range, 0.10~0.33 depending on the location, (mean value for all sites GMF*100=$0.19{\pm}0.05$) that was associated with a strong expression of toxic effects. In the reported studies following the Chernobyl NPP accident monitoring $in$$situ$ of the ambient air genotoxicity was performed in the period since April $29^{th}$ till June $3^{rd}$ 1986 also with Trad-SH bioindicator. In general, mutation frequency increases due to Chernobyl fallout(GMF*100=$0.43{\pm}0.02$) were corresponding to fluctuation of radioactivity in the air reported from physical measures, and to published reports about increase in chromosome aberration levels. Although, recent data obtained from monitoring of the ambient air quality in the Krak$\acute{o}$w and surroundings are lower when compared to results reported after Chernobyl NPP accident, though results express a significant increase above the control level and also are corresponding with increased air radioactivity reported from physical measurements. Statistically significant in comparison to control increase in gene mutation rates and more prolonged than that after Chernobyl fallout increase of GMF was observed during the period following the Fukushima NPP failure.
To understand the effects of elevated $CO_2$ concentration and temperature on seedling emergence of seven herbaceous species, the seedling emergence was monitored between November 1997 and May 1998 using a temperature gradient chamber and a $CO_2$-temperature gradient chamber. Experiment was conducted under current ambient condition (Control plot), 2$^{\circ}C$-warmed condition with ambient $CO_2$ (T2 Plot), 4$^{\circ}C$-warmed condition with ambient $CO_2$ (T4 plot). and 4$^{\circ}C$-warmed condition with 1.8 fold of ambient $CO_2$ (CT4 plot). Species tested in this study were Digitaria adscendens, Echinochloa crus-galli, Panicum bisulcatum, Setaria viridis. Oenothera biennis, Andropogon virginicus, and Imperata cylindrica. Each species often dominates in the herbaceous stage of secondary succession in Japan. The mean seedling emergence times for all species were significantly increased to 23.6 and 32.2 d in the T2 and T4 plot compared to the Control plot, respectively. The most sensitive and insensitive species in seedling emergence time in T2 plot were O. biennis and D. adscendens, respectivel.y, and those in the T4 and CT4 plot were I. cylindrica and D. adscendens, E. crus-galli and A. virginicus, respectively. All experimental species showed no significant difference in the seedling emergence rate between treatments except for O. biennis and I. cylindrica. O. biennis showed a great decrease in the seedling emergence rate from 83.3% in the Control plot to 38.0%, 14.7%, and 29.3% in the T2, T4, and CT4 plot, respectively. Elevated $CO_2$ had very little effect on the seedling emergence. From these observations, it is expected that increased temperature would greatly advance the vegetative recovery time after disturbance through the advancement of seedling emergence time.
A flock of Arbor Acres chickens were reared in cages and provided with high energy pelleted feed. At 14 d of age, a total of 350 birds were separated into 3 groups randomly as follows: 100 birds were exposed to ambient temperature of 20$^{\circ}C$ as a control group, 150 birds were exposed to lower ambient temperature of 11$^{\circ}C$ to induce ascites (group I), and another group of 100 birds were exposed to lower ambient temperature of 11$^{\circ}C$ and fed diet containing 1% L-arginine for ascitic prophylactic treatment (group II). Blood and tissue samples (lung and liver) were collected from chickens at 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 wk of age subsequently, to analyze the concentration and activities of free radicals, mononaldehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), Nitric Oxide (NO) and Nitric oxide synthase (NOS). The results showed that the prevalence of ascites in the control, group I and group II was 3%, 9.33% and 3% respectively (p<0.01). The concentration of free radicals in the lungs of 3 wks old preascitic broilers in group I was significantly higher than in the corresponding control group (p<0.05). The concentrations of free radicals in lung and liver in the 7 wk period, and that of NO and SOD in the plasma were significantly lower in group I than in the control group (p<0.01). However, the accumulated MDA contents in group I were higher than in the control group and group II (p<0.05), respectively. In the same way, the activity of NOS in group II was higher than both group I and control group (p<0.01) during the 7 wk period. There was no significant difference between SOD activities of group II and the control group (p>0.05), and also insignificant difference between NOS in group I and the control group (p>0.05). The results of this study indicate that there was a significant decrease in the concentration of MDA in group II. On the other hand, the concentration of free radicals decreased and MDA concentration increased in group I during the 7 wk period. The reduction in concentration of MDA in group II, following arginine supplementation may be associated with the scavenging activity of NO.
Heat conditioning at an early age has been known to help chickens cope with heat stress later in life. The present study was conducted to determine the effects of heat conditioning at 5 days of age in broilers repeatedly exposed to high ambient temperature later in life. A total of 256 day-old Arbor Acre boiler chicks were housed in two identical rooms with a 23-h light/1-h dark cycle and provided with feed and water ad libitum. At 5 days of age, the birds in one room were exposed to $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours, while those in the other room served as controls. On day 21, half of the birds in each room were moved into the other room so that each room contained both control and heat-conditioned birds. After a 7-day adaptation period, the birds in one room were exposed to high ambient temperature ($21^{\circ}C{\rightarrow}31^{\circ}C$) for 3 days, whereas those in the other room were kept at normal temperature. The same 3-day exposure to high ambient temperature was repeated two weeks later. Hence, there were four treatment groups (CON+CON: control+control; CON+HS: control+high ambient temperature; HC+CON: heat conditioning+control; and HC+HS: heat conditioning+high ambient temperature). Repeated heat stress resulted in decreased feed intake, water intake, body weight gain, and spleen weight (p<0.05) and increased rectal temperature (p<0.05), mortality, and plasma corticosterone concentrations. The relative weight of the spleen was increased in the heat-conditioned group (p<0.05). Plasma biochemicals were also influenced by high temperature. Thus, no beneficial effects of heat conditioning at an early age were detected in broilers repeatedly exposed to high ambient temperature later in life.
For extension of storability, onion bulbs produced in Cheju Island were exposed to ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation at a dosage of 0, 3, or 6Krad and stored in a natural cavern, or in low (2$^{\circ}C$) or ambient temperature storage condition. Sprouting began from approximately five months in storage, regardless of storage condition, and increased as the storage period increased. From early August, sprouting as high as 50% occurred in the natural storage cavern, and 20% in ambient temperature storage when bulbs were treated with 0 krad ${\gamma}$-ray. However, bulbs treated with 3 or 6krad ${\gamma}$-ray did not any sprouting until six months in storage. No significant weight loss was observed in all treatments until sprouting occurred from 40 days after the initiation of storage. Weight loss, however, increased remarkably after 40 days in storage, indicating that it was closely related to sprouting during storage. Bulbs stored at 2$^{\circ}C$ showed 5~10% rot, but were still edible. Percent rot reached to as high as 50% in bulbs unirradiated and stored at ambient temperatures after seven months, while it in irradiated bulbs reached to 5, 33, and 30% at 2$^{\circ}C$, in a natural cavern, and ambient temperatures, respectively. Sugar contents slightly increased in irradiated bulbs in the later storage period under ambient temperatures, while sugar contents in irradiated bulbs in the later storage period under ambient temperatures, while sugar contents in Allium vegetables generally decrease in later storage if unirradiated. Sulfur content slightly increased in irradiated bulbs in the early storage period and decreased gradually in all treatments in the later storage stage.
A simplified dilutor for cock spermatozoa at ambient temperature was achieved by adjusting the 5% concentration of fructose in isotonic saline. Motility of cock spermatozoa was arrested completely for maximum 6 hrs without affection the survivability of spermatozoa by employing this sugar. To study the effect of high concentration of fructose on fertility, sperm were inseminated with or without fructose at different hrs. Fructose from semen samples was removed by centrifugation. High fertility obtained in the hens inseminated with fructose free sperm (washed). In addition, washed sperm maintained the 85.00% fertility for 6 hrs in winter season ($17-21^{\circ}C$) and 82.67% fertility for 3 hrs in summer season ($31-35^{\circ}C$). Whereas control groups showed 47.33 and 25.33% fertility in winter and summer season respectively. No significant difference was found in percent motility and live counts between the control and washed experimental groups during winter season. However, these measures differed significantly in summer. Washing of cock spermatozoa more than once, high speed centrifugation and more duration for centrifugation proved harmful to fertility. It may be concluded that fructose (5%) can be used as a motility or metabolic inhibitor of spermatozoa for short-term storage of cock semen at ambient temperatures.
User's characteristics on the screen adjustment of color TV were studied. Two experiments were performed. In the first experiment, the characteristic of screen adjustment according to TV program, ambient luminance, and gender was investigated. Twenty subjects (10 females and 10 males) were participated in this experiment. Set points of brightness, contrast, tint, and color were measured on TV screen and analyzed. Brightness and contrast were significant on gender at significant level 0.01 and color was significant on gender at significant level 0.1. Tint was significant on program at significant level 0.01. The second experiment was performed to supplement the first experiment. The influences of ambient luminance, presented image, screen setting criteria, and gender were investigated. We simplified the first experiment in the second one. We restricted dependent variables (screen control variables) to only two, brightness and contrast. Other control variables were fixed to middle values. Brightness and contrast were significant on gender and screen setting criteria at significant level 0.01. In conclusion, we found that ambient luminance and presented image had no significant effects on TV screen adjustment and TV program had only a significant effect on tint. However, we found that gender and screen setting criteria had significant effects in most conditions.
Several efforts to meet the exhaust gas regulation have been undertaken by many researchers in recent years. Main researches are on development of design techniques of intake port and combustion chamber, atomisation of fuel and precise control of air-fuel ratio, post-treatment of exhaust gas and so on. Engine technology is changed from PFI to GDI to correspond with exhaust gas regulation. GDI technique makes it possible to preserve lean air-fuel ratio and control accurate air-fuel ratio. Nevertheless, It is not cleared that information of spray characteristics and atomization process are very dependent on fluctuation of pressure and change of temperature in intake stroke. In this study, a constant volume combustion chamber is manufactured to investigate various fluctuations of in-cylinder pressure for injection duration. It is taken photographs of injection process of conventional GDI injector using PMAS. Then, it was verified experimently that ambient conditions as temperature and pressure of combustion chamber have effects on process of spray growth and atomization of fuel.
This research was conducted to examine the changes in growth and production of Oryza sativa L. cv. Ilmi, which was developed to cultivate high yielding rice variety in the Southern plains of Korea. The seedlings of the rice were cultivated from May to October in 2012 under three different conditions: control, AC-AT, ambient $CO_2$ + ambient temperature; AC-ET, ambient $CO_2$ + elevated temperature; EC-ET, elevated $CO_2$ + elevated temperature. The aboveground biomass, belowground biomass, the total biomass of the rice, and panicle weight per individual were the heaviest in the EC-ET. But, the number of grains per panicle and the weight of one grain was higher at the condition of AC-ET and EC-ET than that of AC-AT. The number of tiller was higher at the condition of AC-AT and AC-ET than that of EC-ET. However, there was no significant difference in the number of panicles per individual and the ripened grain rate among the control and global warming treatments. Crop yield was the highest in the EC-ET. This result means that the global warming condition should be considered in the selection of suitable paddy field for the limibyeo in the future.
