The Visual Display of Temporal Information for E-Textbook: Incorporating the Mind-mapped Timeline Authoring Tool

  • With the ever-increasing queries related to temporal (or time-related) information, such as the product launching time, in search engine, most web pages will be augmented with such information in the future. Meanwhile, the gradual emergence of the use of electronic textbooks (or e-Textbooks), which enrich the traditional paper-based textbooks with multimedia contents such as interactive quizzes and multimedia-based simulations, has led us to infer that e-Textbooks will be blended with temporal information to support learning. The use of temporal information helps teachers and students to understand the level of prior knowledge required to study a topic, as well as the sequence of learning activities and related sub-topics, that best attains the educational goals. This paper presents a simple yet efficient tool called TimeMap, which is based on mind mapping, to create an e-Textbook called TimeBook that takes account of time-related curriculum and the ability of students to learn via collaboration.

  • The serine/threonine protein kinase family is a large and diverse group of enzymes that are involved in the regulation of multiple cellular pathways. Elevated kinase activity has been implicated in many diseases and frequently targeted for the development of pharmacological inhibitors. Therefore, non-radioactive antibody-based kinase assays that allow high throughput screening of compound libraries have been developed. However, they require a generation of antibodies against the phosphorylated form of a specific substrate. We report here a time-resolved fluorescence assay platform that utilizes a commercially-available generic anti-phosphothreonine antibody and permits assaying kinases that are able to phosporylate threonin residues on protein substrates. Using this approach, we developed an assay for Cdc7/Dbf4 kinase activity, determined the $K_m$ for ATP, and identified rottlerin as a non-ATP competitive inhibitor of this enzyme.

  • Alvin Toffler는 인류 발전 과정을 세 가지 변화의 물결, 즉 유목 채집 사회에서 농경 사회로의 변화, 산업혁명에 의한 농경 사회에서 산업 사회로의 변화, 그리고 1950년대부터의 후기 산업화 사회로의 변혁으로, 산업 사회에서 정보 사회로의 변혁이 일어나기 시작했으며 탈대량화, 다양화, 지식기반 생산과 변화의 가속이 시작된 시기였다. Herman Maynard와 Susan Mehrtens는 ICT (Information Communication Technology: 휴대폰 등), 인터넷의 발달로 제4의 물결이 시작되고 있다고 주장한다. 이전의 사회 변혁들은 물질 생산이 따르는 가시적인 변혁들이었으나, 디지털 혁명은 시민사회의 참여 확대를 통한 민주주의의 진화된 형태를 가능하게 하고 있다. 지금 우리가 경험하고 있는 제4의 물결의 시작은, 시민사회의 정책 참여와 견제가 효과적이고 효율적으로 이루어지기 시작하는 초고도 정보화 사회의 시작을 의미하며, 정책 결정 자들은 정책 결정 과정에서 그들이 보유하던 절대 영향력의 일부분을 시민사회에 이양됨을 막을 수 없을 것이다. 이러한 대변혁의 시대에 관료주의, Digital Divide, 그리고 시민 참여와의 상관관계를 이해하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 시민 참여에 대한 관료주의의 방침과 태도, 제4의 물결의 정책 민주화와 Digital Divide로의 영향 분석을 통하여 정책 결정 자들과 그들의 환경으로의 파급 효과를 논증한다. 본 연구는 이러한 분석과 논증을 통하여, 정책조직들과 시민사회와의 신세기의 바람직한 동반자적 입지 구축에 기여 할 것이다.

Fabrication and Characterisation of a Novel Pellicular Adsorbent Customised for the Effectvie Fluidised Bed Adsorption of Protein Products

  • A dense pellicular solid matrix has been fabricated by coating 4% agarose gel on to dense zironia-silica(ZS) spheres by watr-in-oil emulsification . The agarose evenly laminated the ZS bead to a depth of 30㎛, and the resultin gpellicular assembly was characterised by densities up to 2.39g/mL and a mean particle dimeter of 136 ㎛. In comparative fluidisation tests, the pellicular solid phase exhibited a two-fold greater flow velocity than commercial benchmark ad-sorbents necessary to achieve common values of bed expansion. Furthermore, the perlicular parti-cles were characterised by improved qualities of chromatographic behaviour, particularly with re-spect to a three-fold increase in the apparent effective diffusivity of lysozyme within a pellicular assembly modified with Cibacron Blue 3GA. The properties of rapid protein adsorption/desorp-tion were attributed to the physical design and pellicular deployment of the reactive surface in the solid phase. When combined with enhanced feedstock throughput, such practical advantages recommend the pellicular assembly as a base matrix for the selective recovery of protein products from complex, particulate feedstocks(whole fermentation broths, cell disruptates and biological extracts).

Empirical Analysis of a Fine-Tuned Deep Convolutional Model in Classifying and Detecting Malaria Parasites from Blood Smears

  • In this work, we empirically evaluated the efficiency of the recent EfficientNetB0 model to identify and diagnose malaria parasite infections in blood smears. The dataset used was collected and classified by relevant experts from the Lister Hill National Centre for Biomedical Communications (LHNCBC). We prepared our samples with minimal image transformations as opposed to others, as we focused more on the feature extraction capability of the EfficientNetB0 baseline model. We applied transfer learning to increase the initial feature sets and reduced the training time to train our model. We then fine-tuned it to work with our proposed layers and re-trained the entire model to learn from our prepared dataset. The highest overall accuracy attained from our evaluated results was 94.70% from fifty epochs and followed by 94.68% within just ten. Additional visualization and analysis using the Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) algorithm visualized how effectively our fine-tuned EfficientNetB0 detected infections better than other recent state-of-the-art DCNN models. This study, therefore, concludes that when fine-tuned, the recent EfficientNetB0 will generate highly accurate deep learning solutions for the identification of malaria parasites in blood smears without the need for stringent pre-processing, optimization, or data augmentation of images.

  • Purpura fulminans is a serious condition that can result in severe morbidity in the pediatric population. Although autologous skin grafts remain the gold standard for the coverage of partial- to full-thickness wounds, they have several limitations in pediatric patients, including the lack of planar donor sites, the risk of hemodynamic instability, and the limited graft thickness. In Singapore, an in-house skin culture laboratory has been available since 2005 for the use of cultured epithelial autografts (CEAs), especially in burn wounds. However, due to the fragility of CEAs, negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) dressings have been rarely used with CEAs. With several modifications, we report a successful case of NPWT applied over a CEA in an infant who sustained 30% total body surface area full-thickness wounds over the anterior abdomen, flank, and upper thigh secondary to purpura fulminans. We also describe the advantages of using NPWT dressing over a CEA, particularly in pediatric patients.

Vessel traffic geometric probability approaches with AIS data in active shipping lane for subsea pipeline quantitative risk assessment against third-party impact

  • A subsea pipeline designed across active shipping lane prones to failure against external interferences such as anchorage activities, hence risk assessment is essential. It requires quantifying the geometric probability derived from ship traffic distribution based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) data. The actual probability density function from historical vessel traffic data is ideal, as for rapid assessment, conceptual study, when the AIS data is scarce or when the local vessels traffic are not utilised with AIS. Recommended practices suggest the probability distribution is assumed as a single peak Gaussian. This study compares several fitted Gaussian distributions and Monte Carlo simulation based on actual ship traffic data in main ship direction in an active shipping lane across a subsea pipeline. The results shows that a Gaussian distribution with five peaks is required to represent the ship traffic data, providing an error of 0.23%, while a single peak Gaussian distribution and the Monte Carlo simulation with one hundred million realisation provide an error of 1.32% and 0.79% respectively. Thus, it can be concluded that the multi-peak Gaussian distribution can represent the actual ship traffic distribution in the main direction, but it is less representative for ship traffic distribution in other direction. The geometric probability is utilised in a quantitative risk assessment (QRA) for subsea pipeline against vessel anchor dropping and dragging and vessel sinking.

Seismic performance enhancement of a PCI-girder bridge pier with shear panel damper plus gap: Numerical simulation

  • In the conventional seismic design approach for a bridge pier, the function of the stopper, and shear key are to serve as mechanisms for unseating prevention devices that retain and transmit the lateral load to the pier under strong earthquakes. This frequently inflicts immense shear forces and bending moments concentrated at the plastic hinge zone. In this study, a shear panel damper plus gap (SPDG) is proposed as a low-cost alternative with high energy dissipation capacity to improve the seismic performance of the pier. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the seismic performance of the pre-stressed concrete I girder (PCI-girder) bridge equipped with SPDG. The bridge structure was analyzed using nonlinear time history analysis with seven-scaled ground motion records using the guidelines of ASCE 7-10 standard. Consequently, the implementation of SPDG technology on the bridge system yielded a notable decrease in maximum displacement by 41.49% and a reduction in earthquake input energy by 51.05% in comparison to the traditional system. This indicates that the presence of SPDG was able to enhance the seismic performance of the existing conventional bridge structure, enabling an improvement from a collapse prevention (CP) level to an immediate occupancy (IO).

Dynamics of Carbon Sequestered in Concentric Layers of Soil Macroaggregates

  • Methods used to study carbon sequestration by soil aggregates have often excluded the concentric spatial variability and other dynamic processes that contribute to resource accessibility and solute transport within aggregates. We investigated the spatial gradients of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) from the exterior to interior layers within macroaggregates, $6.3\sim9.5$ mm, sampled from conventional tillage (CT) and no tillage (NT) sites of a Hoytville silt clay loam. Spatial gradients in C accumulation within macroaggregates were related to the differences in C dynamics by determining the sizes and the turnover rates of fast C and slow C pools in the concentric layers of aggregates. Aggregate exteriors contained more labile C and were characterized by greater C mineralization rates than their interiors in both management systems. In contrast, C in the interior layers of aggregates was more resistant in both systems. These results indicated the spatial differentiation of C dynamics within macroaggregates, i.e., exterior layers as a reactive site and interior layers as a protective site. Greater total C distribution in the exterior layers of NT aggregates indicated more influx of C from the macropores in interaggregate space than C. mineralization (net gain of C), whereas lower C distribution within the exterior layers of CT aggregates indicated net loss of C by greater C mineralization than C influx. We found total C increased approximately 1.6-fold by the conversion of CT soils to NT management systems for a period of 36 years. Differences in total accumulation and the spatial distribution of C within aggregates affected by management were attributed to the differences in aggregate stability and pore networks controlling the spatial heterogeneities of resource availability and microbial activity within aggregates.

  • New images percolate through human consciousness by the media such as movies, TV programs, and brilliant advertisements. These images reproduce new ' things ' throughout the ' semantic processes ' by those who experience and recognize them. Alvin Toffler describes it as the ' information bomb ' and ' image fragments ' in his talk about the new paradigm of information-oriented era. The increasing number of images and their accelerating rate of appearance imply that images become more momentary, and are evidence that they are transforming entire human life and consciousness. Such awareness means a lot to a designer. Especially, the subject that how modern space-dominating images are related to the structure and materials constituting the space and communicate with human mind will be an important factor in establishing the human-space relationship in the future. Furthermore, the present age overspread with various medium is not the only one privileged of the images that exist within space. They are the results of continuous expansion of existing images, and also process of evolution of space powered by the fusion of images and digital media. Imagified space is a boundary layer of Cyberspace, and the space itself becomes an interface by human recognition and participation. Now, the functional classification of spaces such as ' office, ' ' cafe, ' and ' school ' is meaningless. Whatever it may be, the function of a space is defined by the information it interfaces, and therefore it becomes an interface to information through a large number of images. Based on this idea, we will observe the imagificaiton of space in the form of discussion, and from that, try to understand the phenomenon through the real world examples.
