  • The 2, 4, 6 and 8mol% Y2O3 doped-ZrO2 powders (20 kinds) with the addedtion of Al2O3 upto 8wt% were prepared by coprecipitation method using the zirconium oxyacetate, yttrium chloride and aluminum nitrate as starting materials. The coprecipitated powders were characterized by XRD, TG-DTA, FT-IR and SEM. The sintering properties of zirconia-alumina composites prepared by 2YSZ and 8YSZ powders containing various Al2O3 contents were also investigated. With increasing the yttria stabilizer contents, the amount of exothermic heat for zirconia crystallization decreased. And it was confirmed that the crystallizing temperature of coprecipitated zirconia powders increased and the crystallization process occurred in a wide temperature range, as Al2O3 content increased in 8YSZ.

  • Aluminum hydrate gels were prepared from the mixtures of bauxite and ammonium sulfate by wet acid process. Optimum conditions for obtaining the maximum yield( 99%) of aluminum hydrates from the same amount of bauxite were confirmed as follows ; 1. Mixing ratio ; addition of 25mole% of ammonium sulfate to 1mole of bauxite. 2. Calcination ; heated at 350℃ for 1hr. 3. Extraction ; leached at 95℃ in 1% H2SO4 for 90min. 4. pH of precipitating solution; slight below 7.0. Amorphous aluminum hydrates were precipitated at the pH lower than 8.5, but the precipitates crystallized to bayerite at the pH was 10. Mean diameter of α-Al2O3 powders which were obtained by calcining the aluminum hydrates was below 0.2㎛, and EDS analysis revealed than SiO2 was it's primary impurity.

  • Synthesis and compaction of Al-base nano powders by pulsed discharge method were investigated. The aluminum based powders with 50 to 200 nm of diameter were produced by pulsed wire evaporation method. The powders were covered with very thin oxide layer. The perspective process for the compaction and sintering of nanostructured metal-based materials stable in a wide temperature range can be seen in the densification of nano-sized metal powders with uniformly distributed hard ceramic particles. The promising approach lies in utilization of natural uniform mixtures of metal and ceramic phases, e.g. partially oxidized metal powders as fabricated in our synthesis method. Their particles consist of metal grains coated with oxide films. To construct a metal-matrix material from such powder, it is necessary to destroy the hard oxide coatings of particles during the compaction process. This goal was realized in our experiments with intensive magnetic pulsed compaction of aluminum nanopowders passivated in air.

  • In this study, nickel-coated aluminum (Ni/Al) powders were synthesized for the utilization of energetic applications. Oxide materials present at the surface of Al powders of $45{\mu}m$ in averaged size were removed by using sodium hydroxide(NaOH) solution which is used for controlling pH. Nickel material is coated into the surface of oxide-removed Al powders by electroless-plating process. The microstructure of fabricated Ni/Al powders shows that nickel layers with a few hundreds nm were very homogeneously formed onto the surface of Al powders. The oxidation behavior of Ni/Al exihibit somewhat faster oxidation rate than that of pure Al with surface oxidation. Also, the higher exothermic reaction was observed from the Ni/Al powders. From the result of this, nickel coating is very promising method to obtain highly reactive and safe Al powders for energetic applications.

  • Aluminum matrix composites strengthened by the quasi-crystalline (QC) phase were developed in the present study. The icosahedral $Al_{65}Cu_{20}Fe_{15}$ phase was produced by gravity casting and subsequent heat treatment. The mechanical milling process was utilized in order to produce the Al/QC composite powders. The microstructures of the composite powders were examined by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The composite powders were subsequently canned, degassed and extruded in order to produce the bulk composite extrusions with various volume fractions of QC. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the extrusions were examined by OM, SEM, Vickers hardness tests and compression tests. It was found that the microstructures of the Al/QC composites were uniform and the mechanical properties could be significantly improved by the addition of the QC phase.

  • Ultrafine powders(UFPs) of aluminum nitride(AlN) have been synthesized by chemical reactions in the nitrogen atmosphere and the gaseous aluminum evaporated from Al powders in thermal plasmas produced by a DC plasma torch. A synthesis system consisting of a plasma torch, a finely-controllable powder feeder, a reaction chamber, and a quenching-collection chamber have been designed and manufactured, and a filter for gathering AlN UFPs produced by the quenching process subsequent to the synthesis is set up. The synthesis process is interpreted by numerical analyses of the plasma-particle interaction and the chemical equilibrium state, respectively, and a fully-saturated fractional factorial test is used to find the optimum process conditions. The degrees and ultrafineness of synthesis are evaluated by means of SEM, TEM, XRD, and ESCA analyses. AlN UFPs synthesized in the optimum process conditions have polygonal shapes of the size of 5-100 nm, and their purities differ depending on collecting positions and filter types, and the maximum purity obtained is 72 wt% at the filter.

  • Gas release behavior from aluminum and Al 7075 alloy powders during heating in argon was investigated by in-situ gas chromatography. Water vapor, hydrogen, carbon mono-oxide were detected as individual evolution spectra against heating temperature and time. The mechanisms of water and hydrogen evolutions were studied in detail for the determination of effective degassing condition. Magnesium in the alloy powder was found to lower the hydrogen evolution temperature to enhance overall hydrogen release.

  • Aluminum nitride (AlN) powders were prepared by the chemical vapor synthesis (CVS) process in the $AlCl_{3}-NH_{3}-N_{2}$ system. Aluminum chloride ($AlCl_3$) as the starting material was gasified in the heating chamber of $300^{\circ}C$. Aluminum chloride gas transported to the furnace in $NH_{3}-N_{2}$ atmosphere at the gas flow rate of 200-400ml/min. For samples synthesized between 700 and $1200^{\circ}C$, the XRD peaks corresponding to AlN were comparatively sharp and also showed an improvement of crystallinity with increasing the reaction temperature. In additions, the average particle size of the AlN powders decreased from 250 to 40 nm, as the reaction temperature increased.

  • The Ce-doped YAG(Yttrium Aluminum Garnet, $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$) phosphor powders were synthesized by Sol-gel method. The luminescence, formation process and structure of phosphor powders were investigated by means of XRD, SEM and PL. The XRD patterns show that YAG phase can form through sintering at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2h. This temperature is much lower than that required to synthesize YAG phase via the conventional solid state reaction method. There were no intermediate phases such as YAP(Yttrium Aluminum Perovskite, $YAlO_3$) and YAM(Yttrium Aluminum Monoclinic, $Y_4Al_2O_9$) observed in the sintering process. The powders absorbed excitation energy in the range 410~510nm. Also, the crystalline YAG:Ce showed broad emission peaks in the range 480~600nm and had maximum intensity at 528nm.

  • Densification behavior of composite powders was investigated during cold compaction. Experimental data were obtained for aluminum alloy powder mixed with zirconia powder inclusion under triaxial compression. The Cap model with constraint factors was implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to simulate compaction responses of composite powders during cold compaction. Finite element results were compared with experimental data for densification behavior of composite powders under cold isostatic pressing and die compaction. The agreements between experimental data and finite element calculations from the Cap model with constraint factors were good.
