  • The extrusion experiments using the 7075 aluminum billet have been performed to investigate the effects of die cooling and ram speed on the occurrence of surface defects on the extrudate. The purpose of die cooling was to suppress overheating of the extrudate at the moment of extrusion. In the present die cooling system, liquid nitrogen has been injected in to the die and sprayed to the surface of extrudate. Ram speed was either kept or varied in the range of 1.1~1.7 mm/sec. throughout one extrusion shot to check the occurrence of surface defects. Every extrusion started at a ram speed of 1.25 mm/sec. The temperature of extrudate was measured using a laser thermometer. The 7075 billet of 180 mm in diameter and 550 mm in length was preheated at 390℃ and extruded to get a single plate of 8000 mm in length, 150 mm in width and 10 mm in thickness. Each extrudate was checked by eye to find the surface defects. The microstructures were obtained in the specimen cut from each corner of the extrudate using the EBSD micrographs.

  • The use of composite patches for the reduction of stresses at the level of the damaged zone in aeronautical structures has experienced rapid expansion given its advantages over conventional mechanical processes (riveting, bolting, etc.). Initially, The research axes in this field were aimed at choosing suitable mechanical properties for the composite and the adhesive, then to optimize the shape of the composite patch in order to ensure good load transfer and avoid having a debonding at the level of the edges essentially for the case of a repair by single side where the bending moment is present due to the non-symmetry of the structure. Our work falls within this context; the objective is to analyze by the finite element method the fracture behavior of a damaged plate repaired by composite patch. Stress reduction at the edge is accomplished by creating a variable angle chamfer on the composite patch. The effects of the crack length, the laminate sequence and the nature of the patch as well as the use of a hybrid patch were investigated. The results show clearly that a beveled patch reduces the stress concentrations in the damaged area and even at its edges. The hybrid patch also ensures good durability of the repair by optimizing its stacking sequence and the location of the different layers according to the fibers orientations.

  • Adhesive bonding is currently widely used in many industrial fields, particularly in the aeronautics sector. Despite its advantages over mechanical joints such as riveting and welding, adhesive bonding is mostly used for secondary structures due to its low peel strength; especially if it is simultaneously exposed to temperature and humidity; and often presence of bonding defects. In fact, during joint preparation, several types of defects can be introduced into the adhesive layer such as air bubbles, cavities, or cracks, which induce stress concentrations potentially leading to premature failure. Indeed, the presence of defects in the adhesive joint has a significant effect on adhesive stresses, which emphasizes the need for a good surface treatment. The research in this field is aimed at minimizing the stresses in the adhesive joint at its free edges by geometric modifications of the ovelapping part and/or by changing the nature of the substrates. In this study, the finite element method is used to describe the mechanical behavior of bonded joints. Thus, a three-dimensional model is made to analyze the effect of defects in the adhesive joint at areas of high stress concentrations. The analysis consists of estimating the different stresses in an adhesive joint between two 2024-T3 aluminum plates. Two types of single lap joints(SLJ) were analyzed: a standard SLJ and another modified by removing 0.2 mm of material from the thickness of one plate along the overlap length, taking into account several factors such as the applied load, shape, size and position of the defect. The obtained results clearly show that the presence of a bonding defect significantly affects stresses in the adhesive joint, which become important if the joint is subjected to a higher applied load. On the other hand, the geometric modification made to the plate considerably reduces the various stresses in the adhesive joint even in the presence of a bonding defect.

  • This paper presents the fabrication of ceramic insulation layer on metallic heat spreading substrate, i.e. an insulated metal substrate, for planar type heater. Aluminum alloy substrate is preferred as a heat spreading panel due to its high thermal conductivity, machinability and the light weight for the planar type heater which is used at the thermal treatment process of semiconductor device and display component manufacturing. An insulating layer made of ceramic dielectric film that is stable at high temperature has to be coated on the metallic substrate to form a heating element circuit. Two technical issues are raised at the forming of ceramic insulation layer on the metallic substrate; one is delamination and crack between metal and ceramic interface due to their large differences in thermal expansion coefficient, and the other is electrical breakdown due to intrinsic weakness in dielectric or structural defects. In this work, to overcome those problem, selected metal oxide buffer layers were introduced between metal and ceramic layer for mechanical matching, enhancing the adhesion strength, and multi-coating method was applied to improve the film quality and the dielectric breakdown property.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the physical properties of a novel resin-based endodontic sealer, Any-Seal, in comparison with AH Plus Jet. Materials and Methods: Flow, radiopacity and compressive strength were examined according to ISO 6876/2001. For flow test, 0.05 mL of sealer was placed between glass plate and 100 g weight were applied. Ten minutes after mixing the sealers, the load was removed and the diameters of the compressed sealer discs were measured. For radiopacity, 10 mm diameter and 1 mm thickness sample were fabricated and took radiograph with an aluminum step-wedge and analyzed using imaging program. For compressive strength test, $4mm{\times}6mm$ cylindrical specimen was fabricated and tested after 24 hours and 1 week using Universal testing machine. Results: Both tested sealers were consistent with ISO 6876/2001 in the flow and radiopacity test. The flow values of both sealers were not significantly different (P > 0.05). AH Plus Jet had significantly higher radiopacity (P < 0.05). AH Plus Jet showed higher compressive strength at both time intervals (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Any-Seal showed low compressive strength until after 1 week, so its physical and biological aspect should be evaluated more before clinical use.

  • In this study, mechanical property on the composite material of aluminum foam core is investigated by simulation analysis. Impact energies such as 50J, 70J, and 100J are applied to the specimen model. The maximum load occurs at 3.4ms for 50J, 3.2ms for 70J, and 3.2ms for 100J respectively. The striker penetrates the upper face sheet, causing the core to be damaged at 50J test but the lower face sheet remains intact with no damage. It results in occurring with the energy of 52 J. At 70J test, it penetrates the upper face sheet and penetrated the core. And the striker causes the lower face sheet with damage. And it results in occurring with the energy of 65 J. Finally at 100J test, the striker penetrated both the upper face sheet and core and even the lower face sheet. The load becomes maximum at the time when striker penetrates through the upper plate and it rapidly reduced. And then the load increases rapidly when reaching the lower face sheet. And it decreases again. It results in occurring with the energy of 95 J.

  • This study investigated removal characteristic of soluble Cs in water by RPT (Radioactivity pollutant treatment) with coagulation and sedimentation. The RPT conducted with various chemical and natural coagulants to remove the soluble Cs which consisted pre-adsorption, Sedimentation and post-adsorption. Natural absorbent included Illite and zeolite. Especially, Illite divided LPI (Large Particle Illite) and SPI (Small Particle Illite) by grain size. Also, Chemical coagulants included high basicity PAC (poly aluminum chloride). The adsorbent had a plate structure mainly composed of quartz, albite and muscovite. The surface area were $4.201m^2/g$ and $4.227m^2/g$ and the particle sizes were $197.4-840.9{\mu}m$ and $3.28-53.57{\mu}m$, respectively. The adsorption efficiency of the natural Illite was 82.8% for LPI and 85.6% for SPI. The removal efficiency of turbidity, which was an indirect indicator of adsorbent recovery, was 96.4% and 98.3%, respectively.

  • This study examined the radiopacity of eight contemporary luting cements by direct digital radiography. Five disc-shaped specimens ($5mm{\times}1mm$) were prepared for each material tested (BisCem, Clearfil SA Luting, Duolink, Maxcem Elite, Multilink Speed, Panavia F 2.0, RelyX Unicem Clicker, V-link). The specimens were radiographed using a Kodak CS 7600 image plate (Carestream Health, Inc., Rochester, NY, USA) and an aluminum step wedge with a range of thicknesses (1.5 to 16.5 mm in 1.5 mm increments) and a 1 mm tooth used as a reference. A dental X-ray machine Kodak 2200 Intraoral X-ray System (Carestream Health, Inc., Rochester, NY, USA), operating at 70 kVp, 4 mA, 0.156 s and a source-to-sample distance of 30 cm, was used. According to international standards, the radiopacity of the specimens was compared with that of an aluminum step wedge using NIH ImageJ software (available at http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/).The data was analyzed by ANOVA and a Tukey's post hoc test. Maxcem Elite (5.66) showed the highest radiopacity of all materials, followed in order by Multilink Speed (3.87) and V-link (2.83). The radiopacity of Clearfil SA Luting (1.35), BisCem (1.33), Panavia F 2.0 (1.29) and Duolink (1.10) were between enamel (1.79) and dentin (0.19). RelyX Unicem Clicker (0.71) showed the lowest radiopacity, which was higher than that of dentin. All materials showed a radiopacity above the minimum recommended by the International Organization for Standardization and the American National Standards/American Dental Association with the exception of RelyX Unicem Clicker.

Materials and Methods: The parallel plate chamber is mounted in $25{\times}25cm^2$ the phantom such that the entrance window of the detector is flush with the phantom surface. phantom was covered laterally with aluminum, copper and lead which thickness have 5% of allowable transmission and then the doses were measured in field size $6{\times}6$, $10{\times}10$ and $20{\times}20cm^2$ respectively. 100 cGy was irradiated using 6 MeV electron beam and SSD (Source Surface Distance) was 100 cm with $10{\times}10cm^2$ field size. To calculate the photon flux, electron flux and Energy deposition produced after pass materals respectively, MCNPX code was used. Results: The results according to the various shielding materials which have 5% of allowable transmission are as in the following. Thickness change rate with field size of $6{\times}6cm^2$ and $20{\times}20cm^2$ that compared to the field size of $10{\times}10cm^2$ found to be +0.06% and -0.06% with aluminum, +0.13% and -0.1% with copper, -1.53% and +1.92% with lead respectively. Compare to the field size $10{\times}10cm^2$, energy deposition for $6{\times}6cm^2$ and $20{\times}20cm^2$ had -4.3% and +4.85% respectively without shielding material. With aluminum it had -0.87% and +6.93% respectively and with lead it had -4.16% and +5.57% respectively. When it comes to photon flux with $6{\times}6cm^2$ and $20{\times}20cm^2$ of field sizes the chance -8.95% and +15.92% without shielding material respectively, with aluminum the number -15.56% and +16.06% respectively and with copper the chance -12.27% and +15.53% respectively, with lead the number +12.36% and -19.81% respectively. In case of electron flux in the same condition, the number -3.92% and +4.55% respectively without shielding material respectively, with aluminum the number +0.59% and +6.87% respectively, with copper the number -1.59% and +3.86% respectively, with lead the chance -5.15% and +4.00% respectively. Conclusion: In this study, we found that the required thickness of the shielding materials got thinner with low atomic number substance as the irradiation field is increasing. On the other hand, with high atomic number substance the required thickness had increased. In addition, bremsstrahlung radiation have an influence on low atomic number materials and high atomic number materials are effected by scattered electrons.
